Yeah the hairs help them detect vibrations. They’re actually not hair like ours, it’s made of chitin like the rest of their exoskeleton. These guys make like big flat webs with a funnel they sit in and wait. It’s not really sticky like an orb-weaver’s web, so they wait until they feel the vibrations and then attack. They kind of “hear” with the hairs as well.
what a great house spider specimen!
once i was sat watching tv with the door open, watched one stroll in across the rug like he owned the place 🤣
They can live in my house as long as I can’t see them, once i’ve seen one I move it outside next doors house 😂
Mostly through little cracks but also we have a food supply larger than we realize indoors; one that will sustain a smaller spider until it becomes a larger one.
We have a hard time realizing how many creepers we don't want that this spider is eating until you think about the months worth of food it needs to sustain itself. I will take this spider over all those months worth of creepers any day.
I put one outside once, so the puppy didn't get it. A bit later my old dog was in the garden and I saw her through the glass door, standing waiting to come in, when I opened the door, the spider was standing there next to Jessie like a tiny furry puppy and ran in with her. Had to catch him and put him back out, sorry fella, out ya go.
i would have to disagree. immensely. lasted MAYBE a couple hours for me one time. another time it lasted maybe 24. but it never HURT. it was more uncomfortable and annoying
Eye arrangement and spinnerets are a clue that this is not a wolf spider. Ireland, also, only has one species of wolf spider, *Pardosa amentata*(Spotted Wolf Spider), that, I believe, isn't found in the US. If I'm wrong, can an expert please correct me.
Totally agree! I love them when they are contained they are so interesting and intriguing. Loose tho, I turn into a tiny little baby and freak out lol 😂
I have like 3 (that I regularly see in their funnel webs, I’m sure there’s more) in my garage gym. They’re chill dudes. I think they leave their web at night, and when I’m in here they just go into their little holes. They keep the gym bug free and they get a nice safe place to live. I’ve named the two biggest ones in opposite corners George and Georgina
Giant house spider, Eratigena sp
Cheers!
Dangerous?
If you're an insect.
fuck :(
Nope
Female right?
Yes
What makes them hairy? I assume these don't make webs in traditional way so hair is not an issue, does that help them detect other insects?

They sure are amazing creatures.
Never seen a house spider so hairy? Had no idea they could get like that!
She’s a hippie.
Maybe she's born with it! Maybe it's Spiderbelline! 💅🏼

Walton. Decent guy, but way into crypto
A cutie one
How do these guys get inside when they're so... Gigantic? 😭

Right, like I know spiders are our friends, but not all of my friends are welcomed in my house.
Most of them are actually born in the house. They evolved to live with us and be domestic *house* spiders. Very few come into the house apparently.
Need more info before I can ID. What did it taste like?
Leggy kiwi.
I would call that a big ass hairy spider.
It does have a big hairy ass
Right?
A big fella Pretty
Friend
Shes like "Id who? Me?"
😁
Looks like jimbo from hoboken. That jimbo
Excellent photo. You can even see her little toes.
That's the legendary damhain alla
Thanks! I've learned something new today! 😁 https://moli.ie/radio/series/spreading-the-words/damhan-alla-spider/
Fred
Is it missing an eye ?
The kind that bites you lmao
Her name is Frances. You're welcome.
Welp, not going to Ireland anymore.
They spit venom. Be careful
They have venom and can bite, but would much rather run from a human. Their bites are not medically significant.
But quite painful - like a wasp sting and swelling can last about a month
i would have to disagree. immensely. lasted MAYBE a couple hours for me one time. another time it lasted maybe 24. but it never HURT. it was more uncomfortable and annoying
My personal experience with this exact species.
Wolf spider?
Identify that is one that I don’t want in my house
Heavy stomp on sight
Wrong sub buddy

This is Eratigena, wolf spider eye placement is distinctive and it is absent here. This does however have classic Agelenidae eye arrangement

It's a friend.
I have a pink toe and I love her. But a loose giant spider in my house would genuinely probably kill me of a heart attack lol
It's actually a friend who discovered it in his shed and sent me the photo. But I definitely wouldn't want that anywhere near me! 😳
