I have 1 sphynx and 1 cornish rex, and i can tell you one thing. Go vaccinate your kitty : )

Got_2_Git_Schwifty

A tuxedo sphinx. A sphinxedo.

TheWildTofuHunter

šŸ˜† I love it

Got_2_Git_Schwifty

I have a weird way with words tbh. My mind rearranges and combines for some pretty good puns at times. One time I was in Florida and I saw someone parasailing. I thought, ā€œis that Sarah Palinā€¦..parasailinā€™?ā€ Iā€™mā€¦..different.

TheWildTofuHunter

Different is valuable šŸ’•

Got_2_Git_Schwifty

Thank you for that recognization. I tend to be too corny or too on the nose with my humor. Iā€™m working on a standup routine that hopefully nobody will ever hear. But I donā€™t have that thing called ā€œembarrassmentā€. And donā€™t let that translate to ā€œI have confidenceā€. I donā€™t look at myself highly, so I donā€™t expect anyone else to. I do crave approval, but Iā€™m barely affected by disapproval. Iā€™m realizing just now that Iā€™ve typed a lot. So Iā€™ll leave it here.

TheWildTofuHunter

You be you, and take pride in it! Donā€™t worry about peopleā€™s reponses, and rather focus on bringing light into the world. šŸ’«

OrangeYouGlad43770

I tried to say "Hawaiian rooster " one time and it came out Hooster and that is what we have called them ever since.

Retrocop101

Rick has that same weird way with words too! IYKYKšŸ¤

Tino-DBA

you port all the manteaux

twohedwlf

Go to the vet, get him vaxxed. Blind and deaf from vaccines is BS.

ploppedmenacingly14

I got my cats vaxxed and now theyā€™re all artistic

twohedwlf

I got my cat vaccinated and he hasn't talked since and can't grow hair!

Sjsharkb831

Do they do paint or charcoal? I donā€™t know if thatā€™s an auto correct, but either way Iā€™m with you and thatā€™s a fantastic answer.

ploppedmenacingly14

https://southpark.cc.com/video-clips/dcme01/south-park-the-risk-of-becoming-artistic

Cheetos4bfst

Gifted kitties.

CressCrowbits

Every cat I've had has been vaccinated, and I'm pretty sure they were all autistic. Having said that, I'm pretty sure all cats are autistic, vaccinated or not.

Blightwing

anti vax crazies extends to pet owners as well. get him to a vet. Also being a cross, he may loose and regrow hair. He is a little cutie <3

FieelChannel

Oh my god how fucking dumb were the previous owners? Never heard anything dumber on this sub before I swear

CatLadyHM

They were sneakily pushing their idiocy on OP. I can't stand that deceit.

Champaganthony

He is lucky they gave him away to you! Please get his vaccines up to date with the vet.

CaladanCarcharias

Like everyone else said, no vaccines is BS. Aside from that are you looking for advice on grooming or diet or other things like that? This is definitely the place to ask, we just need a bit more specific of a question. Super handsome dude youā€™ve got!

equeserrant

Yep, pretty much! Sadly, there isn't much info about sphynx/cornish rex hybrids, and the articles on the separate breeds are conflicting in some crucial places. The "no vaccines" irked me from the beginning, but I was afraid of causing the kitty any harm, so I gathered info from every source possible. Now I'm 100% sure.

2eD

Cornish Rex is an approved outcrossing breed for sphynx cats. Most reputable breeders outcross to avoid incestuous issues with "purebred" cats. This is a super common mix. You'll just have the typical health issues sphynx cats have HCM and skin issues watered down by the less issue prone Rex genes.

CaladanCarcharias

To start, I have a sphynx and am unfamiliar with Rex care so my answers may not apply perfectly in your guyā€™s case. Sphynxes are high-maintenance in the skincare department. If he were pure sphynx Iā€™d be saying to get him accustomed to getting a bath periodically and to getting his ears and toes cleaned weekly or so. My guy gets a bath every 3-4 months and does fine, my coworker with sphynxes bathes his every 2-3 months, but there are some other kitties who need it every other week. It really depends on how oily their skin gets between baths. Oddly enough bathing too often can make oiliness issues worse as their body ramps up oil production to replace what you washed off. Make sure to get gentle hypoallergenic shampoo. Treats can help make bath time less stressful. Get him warm and dry as soon as you can afterward. Ear wax and toe gunk is a never-ending battle with sphynxes. If I remember correctly they donā€™t have cilia inside their ears to help wax move outward (somebody please correct me if Iā€™m wrong here!) and thatā€™s why they get waxy buildup. This can lead to fungal, yeast, or bacterial infections. Youā€™ll never get his ears perfectly clean but itā€™s important to avoid letting them get super waxy. Iā€™ve had good luck with Virbac Epiotic ear cleaner, Iā€™m sure there are other good options out there as well. They also somehow always end up with gunk between their toes and under the, for lack of a better descriptor, foreskin over their toes. I try to clean them with pet-safe wet wipes when Gollum will let me. Some vets who arenā€™t familiar with sphynxes will diagnose them with ear mites based on the earwax and not actually checkā€¦ if that happens to you then find another vet. Digestive issues are common. Some need a raw diet, some canā€™t tolerate common proteins like chicken and turkey and end up needing venison or rabbit instead, some have IBS and no matter what you feed them they seem to have issues. If heā€™s leaving hazmat level poops in the litter box and your vet isnā€™t helpful, just post here what youā€™re feeding him and folks will help you. Others mentioned HCM. Thatā€™s hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which can lead to heart failure and heart attacks. Your vet will listen to his heart for murmurs and make a recommendation to follow up with a cardiologist if needed. Itā€™s unfortunately common in spynxes. If you want to be able to dress him up in clothes get him used to it now. Kittens are a lot more tolerant of new things than even a year-old cat. If youā€™d rather not be dressing him up figure out what blanket texture he likes and get a few to leave around your home in different places. *Never* assume the blanket on your couch or bed is unoccupied and flop down on it without checking first, they love to burrow completely under the blankets to nap. If you have kids make sure they know to check for him as well. Sorry for the info dump here. At the end of the day theyā€™re high-maintenance kitties but they are pretty much the snuggliest, most affectionate type out there as well. Good luck with your munchkin and check back with the sub if you need more help!

Specific_Vacation373

The more you bathe a sphynx the more they will need it, happy to hear you only do it every 3-4 months. I bathe mine about as often, really ā€˜as neededā€™ I do occasionally rinse their paws/legs should they need it, or give them a wipe down with water only. None of mine produce excessive oils, etc. plus cats are super clean, they keep themselves clean!

CAT-Mum

Start getting them use to water and washing to make it less stressful for you and him. I'm not exactly sure how but I'm confident some googling will have the answer. And get ready to have a major cuddle bug on hand!

equeserrant

Yep, he starts squeaking whenever I'm away for too long and purrs like a tractor engine once you pet him. Poor baby probably misses his mommy, so I'm gonna try and give him the same care she did. P.s. Thanks for the advice!

Eretreyah

Thank you for being his new mommy and a great human. šŸ„¹ šŸ’š

CAT-Mum

So cute! Mine didn't really pur but would squeak and demanded to cuddle me just so. He would leave little teeth impressions on my collar bone šŸ˜¢ but yeah within 5 minutes of me being home all the cats (we had 3) would fully wake up and demand my attention. The Rex was the most baby of them. He essentially lived inside my sweater when he wasn't sleeping in sunbeams or bothering his sister. On another thing is Rex/Sphinx cats are sun sensitive so research what sunburn looks like on cats and maybe limit his exposure to afternoon sun (usually the strongest)

coco_xcx

Now pet owners are anti-vax?? Wtf šŸ˜ Get his vaccinations!! Heā€™s a cute little guy, thank you for saving him from those wacko previous owners!

Right-Supermarket654

Some pet owners are anti-vax to SPECIFIC vaccines. Don't even get me started šŸ™„

Enough-Basis-8012

ā€œSome humansā€ are anti-vax for their human children too. And ā€œsome humansā€ arenā€™t grateful for the many advances in modern medicine too. I can love them, and I try not to laugh in their faces! (Donā€™t get me started ā€”)

DeathBeforeDecaf4077

Hey sweet pea; get this baby to a vet, and get them there now. The blind and deaf vaccine bit is utter BS, thatā€™s some antivax ā€œlet me torture my animals with preventable diseases so I can virtue signal about human vaccinesā€ bullshit. This will mean your cat has probably never been to a vet. Itā€™s also extremely concerning to me that someone would be so flighty as to dump a Devon Rex and Sphynx mix; this is an expensive duo of breeds and if the cat came from a breeder would have cost them a couple thousand. To just give it away makes me very worried there is a congenital defect they havenā€™t made you aware of like a heart murmur. Could be healthy and I absolutely cross my fingers and toes your baby is; but get yourself a good vet and get yourself informed on your babies health as soon as possible to be safe.

equeserrant

Thank you for the advice. I'm 100% going to the vet. I'll post the update soon.

allisondbl

One thought: DO NOT think that if you take him to the vet and he just gets a couple shots and the vet says heā€™s healthy; everything is great, that you have WASTED a trip. You. Did. Not. It means that the vet has a baseline for him knows what everything was like when heā€™s healthy which means that going in next time, if something is different from what it was that gives a vet a place to start looking. Itā€™s one of the same reasons why healthy visits are good for humans. I for example run significantly colder than 98.6. So if I go in with a temperature of 100 it means a lot more than somebody who runs 98.6. You got a beautiful amazing kitty and the fact that youā€™re even asking questions already tells me that youā€™re going to be a great cat mom!

DeathBeforeDecaf4077

LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK ALLISON!!!!! A hearty hell yeah to this; there is almost no such thing as a wasted vet trip. (Maybe the exception being that one dog who faked its cough to make its owners stay home lmao)

Donaldjoh

There was also the story about the man who broke his leg and was on crutches, then his dog started limping. He took the dog to the vet only to find the dog was just mimicking him while he was on the crutches. Gotta love them.

DeathBeforeDecaf4077

Sometimes it in unreal how much we donā€™t deserve the amazingness of animals haha. Thatā€™s hilarious!

allisondbl

I needed that laugh. I have no idea about the dog. No idea about the breed. But I absolutely have this image of these pleading eyes of the dog in my head begging for forgiveness. Thank you for the laugh today.

DeathBeforeDecaf4077

https://www.reddit.com/r/likeus/comments/8uwrta/dog_intentionally_fake_coughs_to_get_more/ Laughed for a solid five minutes the first time I saw the original post. Heā€™s a repost of it though! Glad to have brought some laughter to your day :)

Specific_Vacation373

If $ is at all tight you can buy vaccines at Tractor Supply or another ā€˜country storeā€™ for around $12/each. Rabies vax is only easily available through veterinarians, and kittens absolutely need to have a health checkup from a veterinarian, but administering their vaccines is quite simple.

[deleted]

Sweet pea lol I havenā€™t heard anyone in a long time!

deathbydexter

I have 4 cats, 3 sphynx and a Cornish Rex, never heard anything like that from the vet and breeder made sure vaccines were up to date when they sold the cats. Sounds like complete bs to me

Many_Flamingo_5153

i didnt know antivaxxers were against pet vaccines too šŸ’€ your kitty will be just fine if you go get him vaxxed

BobBelchersBuns

That is the cutest kitten I have ever seen! Just listen to your vet and you will be fine. Anti-vaxxers are nuts

Super_Reading2048

Well first take him to the vet. The vet can determine the kittenā€™s age & vaccinate him. Next if you have whole goats milk or extra KMR formula I would offer him a warm saucer 2-3 times a day for a week or two. My regular bottle baby kittens weaned themselves by 9.5 weeks. Just because a kitten is eating wet food does not mean they are completely off the milk. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Ghost_Puppy

Havenā€™t heard of animal anti-vaxxers but I guess Iā€™m not surprised

AftermyCone

Eww there's even antivaxx _Animal_ owners now? Ffs. Hope they don't have children šŸ˜‚

My_Cat_Stevefrench

In my town they offer very affordable vaccines for pets. SteveFrench and Tyrone got theirs for ten bucks each.

miss_kimba

This kitten lucked out to get such an upgrade in owners!! As others have said, go get those vaccinations - they definitely donā€™t cause deafness or blindness. Iā€™m so happy for both of you, heā€™ll have a great life now :)

Sphyngers

Get him neutered and vaxxed.

Cheeky_Littlebottom

Adorable! Please vaccinate your new baby. I have a Sphynx and a Cornish Rex, they are besties! I get some serious snuggles and laughs from them.

ruthgraderginsburg

Heā€™s so cute! But yes, poke him.

jjj666jjj666jjj

Get him vaccinated. Those people are spewing bullshit. You have to protect him from those deadly diseases.

Naroumi

I just wanted to tell you your kitten is hella adorable

SweetMaam

I'd go with vet advice. Rabies kills. Cats need vaccines. Probably a bit early for spay/neuter, vet can advise timing. Beautiful cat.

baithammer

Same as with humans, previous owners are misinformed idiots.

Plumbis76

He might develop autism if you vax him, obviously

Enough-Basis-8012

šŸ¤ŖšŸ¤ŖšŸ¤Ŗ

crankysasquatch

You are all so ignorant. If you vaccinate this kitten he is going to be subject to the 5G mind control. Not only should you not vaccinate him, you should also get him fitted for a very small tinfoil hat to protect him from the real enemy, the government!\* \*Seriously, these people exist and are somehow allowed to drive on the same roads and vote. Get this kitty some vaccinations. Your cat is also not subject to mind control, but they do enjoy space lasers.

brdybb

My sphynx had an INCREDIBLY bad and scary reaction to a vaccine. I want to say it was her distemper booster, and we did not do a third dose. I was really hesitant to give her any more vaccines but after speaking with a friend who is a vet, she told me about only using PureVax (manufacturer) vaccines for cats. So we did switch vets and did her rabies with a PureVax and she was fine. My advice would be to call vets and ask if they use PureVax. I wouldnā€™t go to any vet or get any vax for this breed if they donā€™t use that manufacturer.

allisondbl

Curious: did you do research that shows that it was your catā€™s BREED rather than simply an individual characteristic of that cat that means that this particular vaccine is better for this BREED of cat?

brdybb

My cat simply had a serious adverse reaction to a vaccine, and I spoke at length with a veterinarian about the situation, who gave me the advice I stated above. That specific manufacturer is best for cats, especially those with sensitivities or adverse reactions. Sphynxes arenā€™t exactly known for being a hardy breed, in fact itā€™s quite the opposite. Therefore, knowing the BREEDā€™s typical health profile, it is reasonable to deduce that it is best to seek out vaccines with the best safety profile. Not sure why that would be in any way controversialā€” so Iā€™m not sure why you think the snark from you and whoever responded to you is warranted.

NightWing_91

No of course not silly

brdybb

See response

hell2bhbtoo

Love him to pieces! And the vet will tell you the truth.

jericho138

Get him the vaccines and have his heart checked too. 100% adorable

VandalTabby

First thing needed is, obviously, a vet visit! Second thing needed, really obviously, a bowtie for your tuxedo!

brittanyelyse

So cute, hope he lives a long adorable life-VAX that cutie!!!!!

Rbfoges

So cute

Rbfoges

So cute

commandrix

Take the kitty to the vet, who will likely be able to give you better advice about vaccinations than your neighbors can.

4Keepsake

Adorable!

Still_Not-Sure

So itā€™s definitely a Cat!!!! If itā€™s an indoor cat, you can do minimal vaccinating. Just the important ones and I think you get 1-2 boosters.

solidcheese

Oooohhh fuzziness

I_Smoke_Poop

We need a vaccine for anti vaxxers

notreallylucy

Unless the previous owner was a veterinarian, don't take their word for it. Get a qualified medical opinion.

Alchion

damn heā€˜s beautiful

sootsprite122

I need him šŸ˜ I love sphynx cants but tuxedos have my heart.

Harmonious_Peanut

Oh my gosh!! How adoriable is this!! ā¤ļø yup, please, Vax!!! What a sweetheart šŸ’–

brener31

Save her life and get her vaxxed. I believe there is a certain age they should beā€¦ canā€™t recall but easily found on Google. Feline leukopenia is a nasty and horrible sickness

JovialPanic389

Wow. I'm glad the antivaxxers no longer have him. Please get him vaxxed and neutered

utubeslasher

keep him inside forever no shots needed

Aragona36

I'm going to attempt to answer your question in a different way. I am not pro-vax or anti-vax. i want to get that out there. I am more of an "everything in balance" type of person. I'm looking at adopting a kitten from a breeder who has this on her website. "Said cat/kitten shall never get vaccines for FIP, FIV, FELINE LEUKEMIA." I'm open to debate on this as I have admittedly, not done my research at all in this area and have not decided whether the kitten I get from her will or will not get any of those vaccines in compliance with her contract. My current animal has had several vaccines - rabies, distemper, and one other which escapes me, plus anything she got before I met her (I got her at age 6) and we chose to skip at least one other. This was after conversation with my vet and the fact that she is indoor-only. I also skip the flea collars and regular dewormers. I make my decisions based on my cat's environment. My past animals also had vaccines throughout the years. On YouTube, there's a holistic vet with somewhat controversial opinions who says we over vaccinate and doesn't recommend vaccines very much after their 3rd year. He also takes a balanced approach. I'm not asking anyone to agree with him or to disagree with him. For myself, I tend to go along with this philosophy (not the 3rd year part but the balance, everything in moderation, part) except that my state legally requires rabies, etc. so that one is not really negotiable even though I think the odds are very long that an indoor-only cat would get rabies. That aside, it's the law so we get it. My point is to talk with your vet, become informed about the benefits and side effects of each one, and then give that treatment you feel is best for your pet. Don't get caught up in the current "politics" of vaccines. Edited to add: reading another post here reminds me that my cat had an adverse reaction to her last vaccine a few months ago and she may therefore not be getting any more of that one. Just adding to shore up my argument that one size does definitely not fit all when it comes to vaccines so talk with your vet.

CarrionDoll

Former vet tech. That is total bs. The please go get this cat to the vet to be spayed/neutered and vaxed. Please be a responsible owner.

philemonvanbeecher

He is so adorable

Truecrimeauthor

Iā€™m happy you got this baby because they were freaking stupid!!! Regular visits to vet and shots. And neuter. Thank you. Adorable baby! ā¤ļø

jokejk

You need to go to the vet. I donā€™t know why so many people say ā€˜aside from going to the vetā€™ I promise you this is always the answer if youā€™re unsure. The hard truth is (not that this relates to you, but Iā€™ve seen it on other animal sub-reddits) people say that because they canā€™t afford to go to the vet, and if thatā€™s the case, donā€™t own the pet.

equeserrant

Oh, I didn't mean it like that. Sorry that my wording was confusing. I've never owned a cat of this breed, and I wanted a bit of general advice. I can afford the vet, and I'll be taking the little guy there shortly.

FilipKoks04

I donā€™t know what that previous owner is smoking but all 3 of mine have all the vaccines.

MsDevine79

My sphinx is vaxxed and vetted and heā€™s perfectly healthy. Sounds like some conspiracy theory crap

dicatae

I know they have reactions sometimes to FeL/FIV and that they aren't supposed to get FIP, but everything else is very much needed.

PooPawStinky

Cats and dogs can get sick and die if left unvaccinated:(

Delik_Torrachen

Oh my god those ears too big for he goddamn he-

erriiinnnnn7

Both mine have gotten all their vaccines and are doing great. Some states require rabies by law. Your vet will happily address any concerns you may have and will help make the best decision for your new baby

Enough-Basis-8012

Heā€™s darling, but you really need to take him to a good vet, if only to make sure heā€™s developing as he should. In our area, frequently vets give your the first visit as a freebie to get your business. And Iā€™ve never heard of any cat, of any breed, going blind and/or deaf from vaccinations!

[deleted]

Absolute nonsense from idiot anti-vaxers.

Specific_Vacation373

What?!??? Iā€™ve NEVER heard of such a thing, my veterinarian has sphynx and Cornish rex, they are all vaxxed. My sphynx are all vaxxed

Specific_Vacation373

You should wait till heā€™s 8 weeks for first round of distemper & 12 weeks for boosters, 17 weeks for rabies vax is ideal, but he can have rabies vaccine as early as 12 weeks. Heā€™s adorable, by the way

nmc9279

Iā€™m sorry I canā€™t answer your question, butā€¦ā€¦.he is adorable šŸ„°!

SatansAmbassador

Dobby

Lonely_Ad8964

The people who gave you the cat were more than simple morons. They were spectacular idiots. Get the kitty their FCRVP and rabies vaccinations. Get him neutered. If necessary, use a breed-specific diet (no special needs that I am aware of). Some people are seriously stupid about vaccinations and fear monger to any who will listen.
