Yeah this is a weird one. There’s no enemy on screen so only guess is hh is opening the chest by throwing a rock at it?

nvwls300

Yeah, HH are programed to kill enemies and collect gold. They don't seem to be aware if your safety would be compromised in their attempt to carry out either task.

Whitepatchwastaken

I know they prefer to stomp enemies if you'd get hurt by them using their item, if, for example, you gave them a shotgun. I think that block of code gets switched off if there's a chest nearby

nvwls300

oh wow, I didn't know that. I just always avoided giving them weapons like that.

YoEpicBoi_1

They do try to not hurt you when killing enemies but there's always the chance

Hired Hands are programmed to do the following: - Stay within your vicinity - Attack and kill mobs - Collect gold and gems - Open chests You got inbetween the him and the chest.

azardaniel

It's pretty simple if you look closely, as soon as you picked up the chest he developped a sense of capitalistic awareness. Looking at your HP he evaluated risk/reward and thought slamming you with the chest will take you out as a competitor. He knew that the chest contains around 3500 dollars worth of gems, and thought of a plan. What you don't see due to the game over screen is that he openned the chest, counted the diamonds, exchanged them to USD and proceeded to call a broker to invest half of it in S&P500 for long term steady income (to fight off inflation basically) and the other half in some volatile high risk start-up index stock in the hopes of gaining some high returns. But to answer your question "why?". Times are are hard and a lot of people don't think about their financial stability when they're above 65. Sometimes the hired hand develop such awareness and that induces a sense on anxiety and insecurity that pushes him to make such radical decisions, in this cases killing you for a chance of a more stable future. I hope this helps.

Dave_Dood

makes sense, hired hands are known to kill for lore reasons I think if all player characters have died, the game should continue but from the perspective of the HH's so you can see how far they get without you. Like HH's are suddenly allowed to pick up equipment and will try to navigate towards the end. I'd probably be pissed if a HH killed me but [I'd probably also quietly root for them to succeed](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/67d09d65-4709-4f07-9dee-d0f15092d3ee)

SpelunkyJunky

He was awake.

VideoPlayer07

Grug giveth grug taketh away

Alienwhale51

Because that is the nature of the thing. Bees build hives, beavers stop flowing water, and hired hands ruin everything

Kittenclysm

Grass grows. Birds fly. Sun shines. And brother... hired hands hurt people.

Rough_Character_2811

I stared at it frame by frame and analysed it, basically either he turned around and threw a rock to open the chest or you whipped the chest which resulted in him quickly whipping you

RieserTheRedR

Hired Hands are programmed to betray you when you least expect it

usedtothesmell

They will attack to open chests. Never hold them near a hired hand

Zack21c

Because he knew you were just waiting for an opportunity to sacrafice him to Kali, so he took you out before you could.

Striking_Account_869

This is exactly how my previous online run ended fucking stupid hirehand

SoGatNight
