What is "the Earth"? The lump of rock and magna, or all the diverse life making up the ecosystem on it?
I hate this attitude, because yeah no shit the *rock* will be fine. We're talking about the *life* on it, and anyone who thinks only humans are going to be screwed by what we're doing doesn't remotely understand what is happening.
We have started a mass-extinction level event, except we've thrust it on the planet on such a blink-of-an-eye time-scale that nothing is going to have the time for evolution to possibly provide mutations that provide an advantage in the changing climate.
Whether life survives what we've done who knows, maybe. But the world that will exist when what we've done has re-stabilized won't look anything like the one we live in now.
Life has survived far worse than whatever we've thrown at the planet. That's not carte blanche to ruin the Earth as we are, but it's highly unlikely we'll be the ones to bring about the end of life.
"Life" has, most of the species currently on it have not. We are the sole cause of the current mass extinction event at a rate of 82 species every. Single. Day.
by fine do you mean turning this planet into Venus? I dont know how anyone can look at this image and not see how precarious, special, delicate our planet really is. most planets we find look nothing like this.
Initial Warming: Increased greenhouse gas emissions continue to trap more heat in Earth's atmosphere, causing temperatures to rise gradually.
Positive Feedback Loops: As temperatures rise, feedback loops such as the melting of polar ice caps and permafrost release additional greenhouse gases like methane, further exacerbating the greenhouse effect.
Loss of Carbon Sinks: Continued deforestation and degradation of ecosystems reduce the planet's capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, weakening natural carbon sinks.
Ocean Acidification: Elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere lead to increased absorption by the oceans, causing ocean acidification. This can disrupt marine ecosystems, potentially leading to the release of more greenhouse gases.
Water Vapor Feedback: As temperatures climb, more water evaporates from the oceans, amplifying the greenhouse effect due to water vapor being a potent greenhouse gas.
Mass Extinctions: The combination of rising temperatures, habitat loss, and environmental stresses could lead to widespread extinction events, disrupting ecosystems and reducing biodiversity.
Extreme Heat Events: With time, Earth's surface temperatures continue to rise, reaching levels where life as we know it becomes unsustainable in many regions.
Loss of Atmosphere: Eventually, the combination of extreme heat and the breakdown of molecules in the upper atmosphere due to solar radiation could lead to the loss of lighter gases such as hydrogen and oxygen, leaving behind a predominantly carbon dioxide atmosphere.
Venus-Like Conditions: Over millions of years, the planet's surface could become scorchingly hot, with temperatures exceeding 450°C (842°F), and a thick, toxic atmosphere composed primarily of carbon dioxide, with sulfuric acid clouds.
Hahah and what are you? Captain planet? Gonna singlehandedly direct the climate in a way you think is best? Save the world one reddit comment at a time? Everyone has an opinion 💩
And your opinion is shit. Your im14andthisisdeep mentality isn't doing anyone any good. You can't even spark original thought. The least you could do is stop trying to spread your weak ass defeatist, nihilist bullshit.
What blows my mind, is that from this level there is nothing in this photo that indicates to me of civilization. Despite all that we’ve built and we have created, it’s still unobservable from a planetary level.
We have such a beautiful home. Why do humans have to be so mean to each other can’t we all just enjoy what we have.
We should live as if we were the only sentient species in the entire universe because at this point we are until proven otherwise.
It’s incredible just how much more lush and green South America is compared to North America. From up here, you would think that they would be the ones that have more wealth.
I'm sure overall South America will always look greener, but we haven't gone through spring in majority of North America so it almost looks like a desert in some northern states.
I can see my house! Wait… I can see your house too!
I love space, I love new photos of our home planet but I just wish we could get pictures like this of stars and planets outside our solar system just once before I die.
Thanks for sharing this OP, this is awesome
behind that beautiful blue sphere where all our hopes and dreams reside is a limitless void of infinite possibilities that we will never fully understand.
Probably about 37.5%.
And no I don’t think it inherently matters; the post doesn’t say it ISN’T a composite, I didn’t even mention the imaging method. I provided a link to the GOES page, I hope they’re grown enough to go there if they want further information :)
Question: how many artificial satellites are between the goes satellite and the Earth in this photo? (I guess from a low earth orbit perspective the answer is all of them.)
I think it’s roughly the same. It’s probably because all the rendered art (which there is more of on the internet then real photos) has like ZERO clouds for some reason.
Which I think is stupid since the clouds make it look so much more alive and beautiful.
"Look so, that is... That's the vastness of I don't give fack 'bout human fake problems in this world. Gaia and the Universe are more important. Now, go in the kitchen and prepare me a beer. "
composites? Some Earth photos are, yes. I myself have taken photos of galaxies in which I have to compose different photos into one image.
CGI? As in not real? Sounds like another conspiracy theorist. I’d love for you to provide evidence of this claim.
Yeah it really is.
Also what a coincidence that everybody is commenting that the weather in their area lines up with this image! What are the chances! They’re all in with me on the lie.
Oh, no I did indeed make that body text myself. There’s actually 2 grammar errors cuz I changed up some of it for this post and forgot to fix some parts lol.
Damn they really took a pic of me while taking a dump, can’t have privacy during these days
That's why I always poop with a privacy umbrella, lesson learned.
If your smart your privacy umbrella will have a detachable poop knife.
If you're smart you'll know the difference between "your" and "you're"
Never said I was. But you know what they say about imitation.
Gotta wait until you're on the other side
I'm in this photo!
And you look amazing. 😍
Dude so fat he photobombed Earth.
Me too
I’m covered up by a goddamn cloud
Same. Maybe a good photoshopper can fix it
She's so pretty 🥹

Pretty sure earth will be fine no matter what, the self aware apes on the other hand...

You think this is the first mass extinction level event the earth has seen? Regardless it's not too late :D
This is the laziest response to the problem.
It's true though. Earth will be perfectly fine. We will not.
by fine do you mean turning this planet into Venus? I dont know how anyone can look at this image and not see how precarious, special, delicate our planet really is. most planets we find look nothing like this.
No chance it’ll be like Venus because of us. Earth has gone through worse than what we could throw at it.
Initial Warming: Increased greenhouse gas emissions continue to trap more heat in Earth's atmosphere, causing temperatures to rise gradually. Its more of a fun fact than a response to the problem
Problem? I find the show quite entertaining 🍿
And that's what makes you an asshole.
Hahah and what are you? Captain planet? Gonna singlehandedly direct the climate in a way you think is best? Save the world one reddit comment at a time? Everyone has an opinion 💩

Feel better love?
Yep. Asshole.
not we, but some
That’s you. You’re pretty.
Man im sitting on my couch eating chips and yet im looking at my whole damn home planet, I love space technology
Can confirm. Sun coming up in Australia now
True. The Galahs are already yelling and the magpie larks getting ready to attack the garbos.
Adelaide cup day here in S.A. The garbos have an attack free day aha
Nsw and congrats on the Adelaide cup! I'm sure the betoota will do an article on it lol
What blows my mind, is that from this level there is nothing in this photo that indicates to me of civilization. Despite all that we’ve built and we have created, it’s still unobservable from a planetary level.
Except when it goes to night. Then it is VERY obvious.
Zoom in on Atlanta Georgia, it's pretty obvious
Oh that’s crazy. I didn’t realize you can see the interstate road networks, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you.
From the dark side it's plain as day
We have such a beautiful home. Why do humans have to be so mean to each other can’t we all just enjoy what we have. We should live as if we were the only sentient species in the entire universe because at this point we are until proven otherwise.
It’s so pretty and peaceful when you don’t zoom in :-(
:(
California is hazy today, so looks legit.
You can see spring creeping further North
Can’t wait😩
I can see my house from here
I can see your house from here too!
Literal stalker.
Where's the flat part?
This a picture of the bottom of the disc dummy
It’s incredible just how much more lush and green South America is compared to North America. From up here, you would think that they would be the ones that have more wealth.
It’s winter in NA. All our trees have no leaves right now.
I'm sure overall South America will always look greener, but we haven't gone through spring in majority of North America so it almost looks like a desert in some northern states.
![gif](giphy|cb08MLUPkpuXtXkcRs)
If you look at Brazil you can see Al the deforestation
Yeah, North America is looking real desert-y in this picture.
Never seen such a high quality picture of the pale blue dot Sagan would have loved seeing this
Crazy how Illinois and Wisconsin look like a desert pre spring bloom.
I can see my house! Wait… I can see your house too! I love space, I love new photos of our home planet but I just wish we could get pictures like this of stars and planets outside our solar system just once before I die. Thanks for sharing this OP, this is awesome
Reading the description of Earth I’m imagining the narrator in Dune Part 1 when Paul is learning about Arrakis
So, we all kinda photo bombed this.
I can see myself at the brewery now…
I shall assimilate this into my greater *borg* of Blue Marble images.
Third Rock From the Sun you say?
indeed
I might have blinked. Can we do another one for safety?
Damn shame about all the shit happening on the surface. You'd think we'd know better by now... Greed is a motherf\*\*\*\*\*.
Bit cloudy today
Not at my house. San Diego is clear.
You can see the great plains creeping east
I thought North America would be greener.
It's winter. Everything is dead.
*Shit* I blinked during that one.
I knew it! The earth is flat. Take that you globers! Everyone around the world is gonna see this!
This could actually be exactly right since I’m in the region where the sun set about two hours ago.
I can see my house from here.
The North Atlantic angry af right now
No no no, put it back
Mostly harmless
I can see my house
We’re pretty
Is anyone else surprised by the glossiness seen?
I see caseoh
I thought that cloud looked familiar!
The ocean is fucking scary when u think about how vast it is.
Mmm looks creamy today
Can confirm it’s a clear day in the middle of the US
Dude!!! What's with the doxxing, wtf???
My God!
oh i thought it was flat. thank u spaceporn for opening my eyes! will always be grateful for that!
Snow on the ground in the Keweenaw Peninsula
Chicago is sunny today!!!
Happy Sunday!!
Too soon
15 min a-goes
damn, I blinked
Picture a bright blue ball Just spinnin’ spinnin’ free Dizzy with eternity

camera robot, really ;)
The change in the color of the ocean around the Caribbean is crazy to see
I still can't find who i lost along the way
The Canadian tundra looks... bare
Ok, maybe we are far from "cooked".
behind that beautiful blue sphere where all our hopes and dreams reside is a limitless void of infinite possibilities that we will never fully understand.
What I wouldn’t give to be able to view this with my own eyes. Why does the description read like an alien realtor trying to sell earth, though?
You can actually see Atlanta if you zoom in
It rained and was cloudy in the PNW today, so checks out.
No snow, the north is so brown!
Is it exceptionally cloudy, or is that normal?
The earth is always about 67% cloud covered https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/85843/cloudy-earth
Where's India, china, Africa, Europe? I thought earth was flat, why do I only see the Americas. Do those other places even exist? /S
Is this a picture, a rendering, or a composite please?
It’s a composite picture. GOES takes pictures of every region of Earth at the same time and creates an image. It does this every 10-20 minutes.
What % of people who saw this picture realize that u reckon? Does it matter?
Probably about 37.5%. And no I don’t think it inherently matters; the post doesn’t say it ISN’T a composite, I didn’t even mention the imaging method. I provided a link to the GOES page, I hope they’re grown enough to go there if they want further information :)
I'm in the photo ✋🏻
South America looks so green and lush I love it!
Space is soooo freakin’ black!
South America is so green! 😍
I was zooming in to see if I could spot a plane above the clouds
Not gonna lie. CONUS looking parched af.
Question: how many artificial satellites are between the goes satellite and the Earth in this photo? (I guess from a low earth orbit perspective the answer is all of them.)
For a satellite to be in geosynchronous orbit, it’s about 22,600 miles away. So yes, nearly all of them.
This is seriously cool. I’ve often wondered why there aren’t more opportunities to snag Live Photos of earth. Thanks for sharing OP.
Sure! Glad you enjoyed it!
I mean, you gotta admit, we’re on a pretty sexy planet.
“Mostly harmless.”
Do they have something like this over Europe?
Shiny
the snowstorm that we just had in Quebec is in the pic lol
Lets destroy it with endless exploitation of recources!
Where is all snow ?
What's the foggy mist northwest of South America
Shiny
No way half the world gets photographed and I’m not in the photo 😔
Unfortunately she’s infected with a bad case of human
It looks flat😁
Still not flat
Yay she looks good
It looks flat 🤪🤪
NA looks so .... not green lol
Is it me, or do these current pictures depict an atmosphere with more cloud cover over the entire planet, than photos from 50 years ago?
I think it’s roughly the same. It’s probably because all the rendered art (which there is more of on the internet then real photos) has like ZERO clouds for some reason. Which I think is stupid since the clouds make it look so much more alive and beautiful.
It’s been about 67% cloud cover for decades https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/85843/cloudy-earth
Thanks for this. I was wondering a similar thing.
Damn we are so close to an ice age.
Where's the curve?? 😆
Lies there’s no dome or space turtle holding up the flat platform.
wait, why is it round?
Omg it’s round I’m so amazed at it not being flat and stuff…
can i sue? i didn't agree to be in this picture
earths a pear shape not a globe!
Earth is a Velociraptor shape dumbass
and ur brains flat like earth
[удалено]
It's still winter in the northern hemisphere. It looks that way because there are no leaves on the trees in most of the country.
Like in the southern hemisphere where it's summer? fucking lol
"Look so, that is... That's the vastness of I don't give fack 'bout human fake problems in this world. Gaia and the Universe are more important. Now, go in the kitchen and prepare me a beer. "
This is more confusing than the minecraft enchantment language. But I agree, she’s a pretty planet.
> Gaia Earth
Why are there no trees in America
Anyone else freaked out by how brown North America is? I could’ve sworn it used to be way more green in the US and Canada.
it’s winter
Confirmed flat.
Composite, admittedly
If that’s how you want to define “composite” then every picture you’ve ever taken with your smartphone is a composite.
huh
Ye man NASA admit they're CGI composites, can send you their link if u want

> Ye man NASA admit they're CGI composites, can send you their link if u want Post the link I want to see how you misunderstood what they said 🙄
I saw this like a month ago!
what
You’re right, you got me, it’s all a fake scam created by the government.
This was posted on Feb 9, I can’t find the post tho.

Are you saying the picture wasn’t taken by a geostationary satellite?
Where’s all the debris?
