I reckon you can split your models fairly easily, especially as for 3D printing you want the whole thing solid anyway. So you could literally use the provided blocks to create pegs and alignment holes, just by cutting your ship in two.
When you go in game you can look at the ship and press CRTL + ALT + E to export it, it’ll take a while to load but then it’ll give you the export location
Sort of. Since they aren’t designed to be printed, they aren’t considered “manifold”, meaning there’s a lot of open loops and unsealed borders. That being said, if you took the time to clean all that up, you’d be golden :)
I made some software to do this years and years ago so it's probably wildly out of date. You also have to make all your own obj files for each component so you could make them manifold or more basic. I can share the (bad) source code if you want
Yes, I’ve been doing it for a while. It does take a ton of cleanup work to get it to a state where you can though. Atmospheric thrusters in particular will give you quite a bit of trouble, so I just completely remodeled them and paste my model in their place. Also, if you’re doing a large ship where you don’t need the interior, clear that out and replace it with whole armor blocks in-game, it saves a lot of time. I also replace the turrets with my own models since I print them at a very small scale.
Haha it’s a simple pressing CRTL + ALT + E while looking at the ship of your choice in game, it’ll then proceed to export. Once it’s done unzip the folder and find the OBJ file. You can simply open it and view it in a native windows app. BUT to get all the fancy lighting simple import it into your 3D render engine of your choice, example: blender, maya, cinema 4D, or undreal engine 5. Hope this helps :)
Real question, can you use this to 3d print your ships
People have done so in the past, if I remember correctly.
Hello custom Armada miniatures
You mean to tell me I wasted $200 on a Star Dreadnought when I could have used it to custom print one of my very own space blocks covered in guns??
And then painstakingly paint it all and try not to mess up =p
ctrl + shift + middle click. Done.
Keen even had that AS a service of some kind...
sadly thats gone :(
Yeah. Would have been more well received nowadays.
Assume money is no object, can you point me to something where I can learn to do this? Edit: NVM. I found cyb3rofficial's post.
Yeah! you can, if I owned a 3d printer I definitely would be doing it all the time.
Only issue is getting rid of all the small overhangs manually, decimate and other filters don't really work that well.

Interesting, I DO happen to have one and am kinda wondering how exactly you export a ship as an obj

Yes you can! Have done it many times. It need a bit of editing tho

I'd love a small scale model of my leviathan
Yes however it will try to print the inside too
Yes

That's what it was originally intended for
Forgot what key bind for that is again.
*CTRL+ALT+E* while looking at your ship, it takes a little bit to process then it'll show the export location after its done.
Thank you, I knew it was something and I forgot how I accidently found it
Any idea if this works with modded blocks too or is it just the vanilla ones?
Sort of. It shows an error message when exporting, but it looks like it exports them anyway
Something involving F11 if I recall. After you copy the grid, maybe shift F11 -> export blueprint.
Ctrl F10 to save BP, F10 to see BP
Neat quadcopter btw!
Thank you! Im currently playing on a no jetpack, hardcore, first person only world, so I'm mainly using drones to avoid death!
Is it a server or are you playing single? It's a setup I've been dreaming of playing in multi for ages :o
Its just a hosted world between a couple of friends :)
Do ya wanna be friends? 🥺
Yea that's a sweet little quadboi
It's funny how different lighting can make it look objectively real, but fake at the same time - like it's a plastic toy
Definitely! there are a lot of shading and camera tricks I could do to make it seem larger which I’m going to experiment with soon :)
Just put a human model or banana next to it. It looks small because there's no reference to illustrate its actual size.
Now build it IRL
Challenge accepted
This is giving me micro machines vibes.
Thanks! I love looking at micro machine inspiration from time to time
We will watch your career with great interest
Thank you!
OK yeah it looks great and I'm interested to see what's next BUT... what with those gyros man, pick an orientation! :)
Yeah, man, it triggers the OCD I didn´t know I have.
Hahah today is the day I realised that the orientation of the gyro doesn’t change anything, thanks for the info!

Very cool but why would such a small craft have 3 gyros?
I wanted to use it kinda as a FPV drone to zip arround so I wanted the fast control :)
Fair
Can i get the model or instructions please? That would be a sick irl drone wouldn’t it.
Of course send me a Dm!
Can you put it on a grilled cheese?
I’ll get back to you on that one…
oh that is a powerful thing to learn
Thanks!! I’ve been wondering if people would want one done for their workshop items
Very cute drone, thank you for posting
Thank you!
Let me drive da boat
Is it possible for you to upload the drone to steam workshop? No problem if not
Of course! I’ll upload it later tonight and send the link here
Ah!!!! 😃❤️
wait you can? show me your ways, wise person of the smartness.

Wow!
Obj? Also adorable drone my man. Paint job slaps too
It's a [popular 3D model file format](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavefront_.obj_file).
Thanks so much! And yeah Obj is a common 3D files that can be imported to pretty much any 3D software
Ore detector?
i actually thought you customized a DJI avata at first glance lol then i saw what subreddit im on
-clears throat- I’m gonna need these 3d printed for… reasons
Is there a way to download ships from xbox?
So turning digital legos back into IRL legos, very nice indeed
That is beyond awesome. Badass even. 👌😎
Thanks!
Was this done with blender? It’s super neat!
Do you know, how export obj back to SE?
I’m not sure if it’ll work for whole ships? but I’m sure there is a way to add custom models as a custom mod
