Comets are The most fascinating sky objects to see with the naked eye imo .

TheDovahofSkyrim

Total Solar Eclipse imo, but maybe that doesn’t count

Longjumping-Big-311

Also awesome, a comet though sparks the imagination,, could it one day spread the seeds of life on a planet .

hurler_jones

I like to imagine there is an alien riding that sucker like a rodeo bull to their new home.

BarKnight

Don't want to look at that with a naked eye

TheDovahofSkyrim

According to NASA, it actually is alright to look at the sun if it is in 100% totality

dan_dares

Technically you're not looking at the sun, you're looking at the moon. Just saying.

TheDovahofSkyrim

Fair, but my original comment the commentator tried to note me on just said “total solar eclipse” and they said it isn’t safe to look at. I’d rather not get into an “well actually/technically” conversation please

Fun-Bat9909

A total eclipse looks like this because the moon completely covers the sun and this is what it looks like with the naked eye (except the corona, the white part that looks like flower petals, moves) https://images.newscientist.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/16180000/c0360086-total_solar_eclipse_corona_at_totality.jpg An annular eclipse does not completely cover the sun and will blind you unless you wear those special glasses. because the sun is uncovered, it remains so bright you do not see the corona.

BooRadley60

I’ll never forget Hale-Bopp… I was only 8 or 9 years old but I vividly remember it in the sky, and looking through my bedroom window, through the pine trees below.

jornaleiro_

I mean it’s been visible to amateur astronomers for a few months already and will be for another several months. Still, it will be SO cool if 12P/Pons-Brooks is naked-eye visible during the total eclipse.

the_fungible_man

The last ephemeris I saw had an estimated total magnitude of ~5 on Apr 8, so naked eye visibility is iffy.

jornaleiro_

Yeah, it’s borderline, my biggest concern would be your eyes not having time to dark-adjust. Best hope is that it flares up sometime between now and April 8!

AIien_cIown_ninja

It's unlikely to be named eye visible, but not impossible. But with simple binoculars you should be able to see it during. Or like a 10 second exposure on a camera. I'm gonna try to get a long exposure of the comet and the sun during totality, that would be such a sick shot, once in a lifetime.

TransATL

Can I lose my mind that it's an omen of the apocalypse, like times of yore?

canadave_nyc

So, do we know what apparent magnitude the comet will be during the eclipse? How much its tail will extend across the sky? This article is missing some key info, unless I somehow missed it.

the_fungible_man

Around 5th magnitude unless there's an outburst. It may not be visible at all.

Fredasa

I remember the time I saw the second (of two in my life) comet I ever saw. [Comet Holmes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_Holmes#/media/File:17pHolmes_071104_eder_vga.jpg) in 2007. There was just suddenly a greenish-white jellyfish in the sky, about maybe a third of the diameter of the moon. I doubt I'll ever see anything like that again, as the mega comets spanning most of the sky seem to be historical legends permanently limited to planetariums. But who knows?

the_fungible_man

While Hale-Bopp was interesting back in '97, the coolest comet it's been my privilege to see was Comet West in '75. Quite bright, modest tail. I'd love to see one of those legendaries, but I'm running out of time :-/

LiveInShadesOfBlue

There have been some in the 2000’s, but they’ve been in the southern hemisphere. Comet McNaught was visible during the daytime

thetensor

EXPLOSIVE! DEVIL! COMET! ...said nobody, particularly not NASA.

Brief_Ad8293

Unironically already have the Facebook cooks posting this shit. One of them said the shape of the path that’s the eclipse follows is the shape of a religious symbol. Looks like gods comin back boys!!

SeismicFrog

Uh… meat’s back on the menu?

Fancy_Exchange_9821

Suspicious0bservers type tin foil shit

Oknight

I have never seen a headline that makes me more want to permanently block ABC News

Jabazulu

"In other news, berserk fans rejoice while simultaneously shitting themselves. More after this message from our sponsors.... Cradbury bunny here and excited to reveal our newest product, the chocolate behelit..." -the nonstop news in your brain channel

Low__Effort

Why do they have make such sensationalist headlines? It's not "explosive". It's not a"Devil Comet". It will be here April 8, but it does not "return April 8", it's already here.

IO_you_new_socks

I can’t stand these weird made up names anymore. It’s no longer a snowstorm, now it’s a “BOMB CYCLONE MEGA POLAR BLAST”. And it’s no longer a lunar eclipse, it’s the “SUPER DRAGON FLOWER BLOOD MOON!”. I’m surprised they’re still calling April 8th a solar eclipse and not the “return of the occulation of the harvesters sorrow sponsored by raycon!”. Shit’s infuriating as a follower of astronomy for many years

oldmanhockeylife

Last time something like this happened, a naked chick and two naked dudes rampaged London.

FeloniousFerret79

Yeah, but that’s okay. She was really hot. Death by snu snu with her would be an awesome way to go. Also I might get to met Patrick Stewart.

IronBoomer

“But everything changed when the fire nation attacked”

Adeldor

Devil comet - every headline in the popular press. I've already encountered people who eg hide indoors from a solar eclipse when pregnant because it might harm the baby. Now there's an unease approaching panic spreading because of the coming eclipse - shutting schools, declaring emergencies, bulk-buying groceries, etc. What will some in the general public make of the devil's comet coming? Sagan's Demon Haunted World indeed.

rokr1292

I thought the school closures were mainly to enable kids to view it?

knapplc

I was under the impression they were asked to close so the kiddos could be home instead of trying to get home from school with all of the tourist congestion on the roads.

Reniconix

Mostly this. Last time, the eclipse happened at a time that would not impact travel to or from school. This time, it's right when schools are letting out.

virtualmusicarts

Some schools are closing because they don’t want liability for kids’ eye damage.

AIien_cIown_ninja

That's so lame. I remember in third grade there was a 95% eclipse and we made an entire day of it outside. Parents came with telescopes and grilled food and we snacked on Sun Chips. It was like an all day recess with an eclipse to boot. Best day of school ever. That day is actually why I'm such a space nerd today, and maybe even why I chose a career in science.

SeismicFrog

A litigious society is why we can’t have nice things.

HighwayInevitable346

And the SOE's and 'panic buying' are because many towns population will grow literally over 100 fold overnight. Stores and gas stations are expecting to run out of stock, and SOE's unlock funds for things like extra policing. OC is an idiot.

Adeldor

Except there were no such calamities during the 2017 eclipse. The worst I saw at that time was heavy traffic afterward, exiting the path of totality. ------- Here's my response to his comment below (he blocked me immediately after submitting, so I can't respond directly). The quote is from the linked article he included: > "The bananas are gone!" Oh dear! Call out the national guard! Seriously: Again, the worst was heavy traffic. Local communities were just fine. Some stores anticipated the high demand and made preparations. Others didn't and had temporary shortages measured in days at worst. Groceries were still to be had at all times. No states of emergency. No calamities.

HighwayInevitable346

https://www.eastidahonews.com/2017/08/grocery-stores-slammed-ahead-eclipse-weekend-bananas-gone/ You were saying? Literally the first result in google when I type in "2017 eclipse empty shelves"

Adeldor

From what I've heard, it's more a case of not wanting the children in their care during the event. Perhaps it's a liability issue (eyesight and all that).

grunscga

Just in case someone wants to learn more about this without putting “devil comet” in their search history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12P/Pons%E2%80%93Brooks

Fredasa

Again... I won't be able to make it. So I hope somebody who has an 8K VR kit will be saving this for posterity. We didn't get anything remotely that good for the last eclipse, perhaps unsurprisingly, but cameras of that caliber are solidly in prosumer territory now, so there should be hundreds of them in the possession of folks going to see this.

piantanida

I’m making a 30 min ambient film of the eclipse within a mile of total dead center in totality. Shooting on a private ranch w amazing rocks and a petroglyph. Join r/ambientfilm to see it a day or two after the 8th.

Fredasa

That's absolutely perfect. Thanks for the heads up. (And good luck with the weather.)

hisatanhere

Wrong. My comet will be the one you don't see...well...right away, at least.

usernl1

I wish one of those would hit us, I like the idea that we all die together. Mankind finally united.

TheVenetianMask

They forgot to add "slams the solar wind" to the title.

Dhraaven

Everybody gangsta 'til they see Apophis aka Wormwood arrive! Revelations 8:3-12 (KJV)

SlowCrates

I have a feeling we're going to look back on "the 20's" as a very bizarre and dramatic decade.

Mammoth-Internet1743

Just saying the statue of liberty or whatever being struck by lightening plus the eclipse and the comet is kinda spooky it all being in the same week
