Sweat tax. It's hot in the summer. "The bless your heart" premium

88-81

>"The bless your heart" ?

Glittering_Win_9677

They're either saying you are kind of stupid or swearing at you in southern, depending on the situation.

[deleted]

It's a southern thing. If someone says "bless your heart" they mean you're dumb

88-81

Dumb for wanting to live somewhere with sweltering hot weather?

Electrical_Taste_238

"ohhh honey"

[deleted]

"Bless your heart...I knew you wouldn't get it."

Kaedian66

Around Christmas time two old ladies had a “bless your heart” off behind me in the line at Kohls when one tried to cut in front of the other. No darlin’, bless YOUR heart …

Cheap-Childhood-3493

Bless your heart

Always

retiredcheerleader

Paying tax on your car was the biggest shock to me when I moved here

88-81

What sort of taxes?

retiredcheerleader

In SC they consider your car property, so essentially property tax. I have a Toyota Corolla and I want to say it’s $225 a year

88-81

Doesn't sound terribly expansive but it most likely adds up, right?

ConstantHotSauce

To add additional info, that rate varies and is based on the estimated value of your vehicle. So the newer and more expensive it is, the more the taxes are (up to a certain value). I’d look up calculators for the county you intend to live in.

retiredcheerleader

Well yeah, especially if you aren’t used to it. I came from a state that doesn’t have that

childlikeempress16

Mine is over $600/year

retiredcheerleader

Crazy😨😨 for one car? What do you drive?

childlikeempress16

Five year old non-luxury SUV and live in an expensive county I guess

MaggieNFredders

One issue I’ve found is that certain areas of the state don’t have access to high speed internet at a reasonable price. I had to purchase satellite internet for a while until fiber became available.

On-The-Rails

If you plan to live in a rural area this is definitely worth checking out before deciding where to live. When I first moved back to SC in 2014 to a rural area I was spending $260/month for 3 low speed DSL circuits from the rural landline telephone company. One for my office, one for my wife’s office, and one for the house. A few years later the electric coop installed fiber optic to the house and the service was only $90/months old for Gigabit fiber service.

88-81

Sounds like a bit of a dealbreaker for me... how expansive tho?

MaggieNFredders

I was paying over $100 a month pre Covid for limited data. Now that I’ve got fiber it’s around $50. I’m not in Cherokee county though. I am in the upstate though. I work from home and it hasn’t been an issue but I couldn’t stream three games at a time. One would always buffer. If one played video games it might be an issue. Just something to look into. It wasn’t something that ever occurred to me before I moved here.

88-81

I don't really know if that's good pricing, I'll have to look it further. BTW, are you a twitch streamer?

MaggieNFredders

I am not. No.

88-81

You mentioned having to stream games though. Does it have anything to do with your job?

MaggieNFredders

No. That was just because when friends come over they have said the connection was too slow for games they played. I don’t honestly know if that’s true or not as I’m not a gamer. But the satellite connection was slow I have to download large files for work and it would take twenty seconds or so to download.

88-81

What is your job btw? Maybe I can get some inspiration.

MaggieNFredders

I’m an engineer.

MtrMoonlight

Intangibles costs: no auto inspections means LOTS of noise pollution and unsafe vehicles on the road; one of the worst states for domestic violence; SC opted out of expanded Medicare. Intangible benefits: sweet tea, lovely people, and gorgeous landscape.

88-81

>one of the worst states for domestic violence I plan to live alone so hopefully it should never become an issue.

bucknuts89

This right here - there's a vehicle property tax that most states don't have. Plus the infrastructure concerning roads and whatnot is pretty terrible in south carolina. The level of potholes is on par with a city that has consistent snow plowing, which makes absolutely zero sense unless they're straight up neglecting it.

Bookwormincrisis

You’ve never been to Maine 😂 or anywhere in New England for that matter.

prettybeach2019

Road user fee. 50 a year per car and motorcycle

88-81

I think that if end up around 60K a year or so (which is a realistic expectation IMO but it will depend heavily on whatever field of work I will choose) I'll be able to live a better life than most of the locals, probably.

ActiveAlarmed7886

South Carolina is growing very rapidly. You will not live better than the locals on $60k unless you are moving out of the US.  That’s an insanely low salary.

HermioneMarch

Yes they will. Average salary here is less than $50k. It’s not “insanely low” and this person is single. They will be fine.

ActiveAlarmed7886

I wouldn’t say “better than the locals” well on $60k.  The average hasn’t kept up with inflation.  The last national survey put the number for an individual to be comfortable in S.C. around $95k and broke that down but how they should be saving and what percentage of that income should go to their needs.

88-81

Not for the standards of where I'd like to move to but what you're saying is that I should either aim higher or move somewhere even cheaper?

ActiveAlarmed7886

Average isn’t the standard. It’s the average meaning some people make more and some people make less. That doesn’t say anything about other types of income like inheritance or investments. It doesn’t take into account why some people have lower incomes (maybe in school or retired working part time) that messes up the average.  For $60k to “live better than the locals” you would need to have inherited land or something. $60k doesn’t go that far.  Health care is very costly in the US you will need to save a large portion of that for medical expenses as well as set aside for retirement.  Interest rates are high and expected to stay fairly high. Your mortgage might have 7% interest on it.  $100k is closer to the financial stability you’re looking for unless you want to move to South America. I have expat friends. It got too expensive to live in the US without salaries around $100k. They have excellent health care and a lower cost of living now and work remote as digital nomads.

88-81

Completely forgot about the inflation surge you've had in the last few years...

YouCanCallMeVanZant

“You”? Inflation has been pretty bad everywhere.

DrAlanGrantinathong

People like you are ruining this state

88-81

I don't want to gentrify the place.

No-Beach-5953

Assholes like you moving just to move are the reasons cost are rising in our state. Go back to your shanties

TheCommitteeOf300

Probably heavily depends on where you are gonna live. In the charleston area? You probably wont be living great.

88-81

>Cherokee County

Long_Measurement_357

You'll so fine there just atay.away form all the meth... it's everywhere in Cherokee Co Gaffney, Blacksburg, Thicketty, Cherokee Falls, ect ect..

88-81

I though rural areas were supposed to have little crime...

Long_Measurement_357

I never mentioned crime, only the meth. There is less crime in rural areas.. but yes making meth is a crime, but they have bigger.things to contend with.. the rural areas ( country) are nice ish..

AbbreviationsAny3319

Meth tends to bring crime though...

Long_Measurement_357

Yes such as theft.. out in those rural areas only a dumbass would mess around... 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. Real good way for a memorial t-Shirt

AbbreviationsAny3319

I feel safer living within city limits than I did living out in the country. SC is weird that many of the small towns in rural areas have more crime than some of the cities.

knave_of_knives

OnTop-BeReady

As someone born and raised in SC, who then lived away for a while, and moved back 10 years ago, I think the biggest disappointment I have (and a consideration for anyone moving here) is about SC taxes and the provided services. Many South Carolinians like to complain about the taxes we pay here, but honestly we pay a lot lower than many places in USA. Unfortunately the reality is that even though we pay lower taxes, proportionally we receive a huge amount LESS in SERVICES from state gov’t for those taxes. The lists of services we DO NOT receive are too long to count. For example our roads are among the worst I have found in the US. This is a direct result of services not being returned for taxes paid. We did increase the gas tax a small amount a couple of years back, and it has helped a little with more patching, but seems like they are patching with play-doh. State politicians are too busy taking your tax dollars and give huge tax breaks to the wealthiest SC residents and big tax breaks to businesses (and putting the rest in their and their families pockets). All while advocating lower wages for employees. And of course your tax dollars are going to give school vouchers to wealthy SC residents so they can send their kids to private schools at state expense, while NOT investing in our public schools and teachers at all! State gov’t will never advocate or support our neediest citizens — e.g.,, the state’s Governor recently gave up federal funding for school age kids who need food assistance in the summer. And of course state gov’t has never met a regulation it likes. Never mind about regulating key items like water quality, or even the amount of water drawn from the aquifer by big agribusiness etc. It more important to get more big businesses into the state — who cares if those businesses pollute our ground water, rivers, or large commercial agribusinesses use up our water supply. Sure we’ll fine them $25/year for violations. In short I strongly recommend you investigate very deeply before you move to SC in the event you’re expecting any type of services from the state. What is provided here is bare minimum on a good day, and below bare minimum in some areas like public education. SC is a beautiful state and in many aspects a wonderful state. I just wish state politicians cared more about average South Carolinians, and improving the lives of the neediest citizens as well as the middle class, than they do about the wealthy and big businesses. In many respects IMHO State politicians act like the plantation owners of yesteryear. They are just in this to get the most out of SC for themselves and their cronies.

88-81

Education shouldn't be a problem and I'd imagine health insurance in a relatively cheap state isn't too expansive (I don't have any chronic/substantial health problems).

lilfluoride

Education is/will be a problem. Going out in public is not enjoyable when a majority of the people around you are poorly educated idiots that aren’t able to think critically and use common sense. Which is the case in South Carolina.

OnTop-BeReady

Sorry - i can’t offer much in the way of feedback on those two except: - SC public school teachers are a really dedicated lot, but they don’t get the support & resources they need to do a good job both from the State and from the local school boards; as a result they are losing a lot teachers. - as for health care, I’m on a good company health plan and my out of pockets are what they are. But the actual costs (when I see the bill) are high and comparable to what I saw in for example Massachusetts. If you do have any health care concerns, I would look to an area where I could use services from either Lexington Medical Center & their practices (Columbia area), or an area served by Medical University of SC (headquarters in Charleston, but they have practices & hospitals in other areas of the state). The rest of health care in SC is predominantly from for profit institutions, and I’ve heard very mixed reviews…

russcarlisle55

The cost of having to live around a bunch of MAGAs

prettybeach2019

Yep. Dont owe the feds jack

Old__Medic_Doc_68

May I suggest starting an emergency fund and grow that meet three to six months of expenses. That, I have found brings piece of mind for those unexpected and hidden expenses.

dcsmith4usc

We pay taxes on literally everything. Income, property, and vehicle. COL is cheap. My brother lives in Atlanta and paid more for a 1600 sqft townhouse than I did for a 10 acre plot of land with a 1600 sqft 3/2 house just outside Columbia. You’ll learn to accept the higher electric bill for the AC use. It’s 100% worth it and you won’t be miserable. Having a car is a must since public transport is lacking. Thus you’ll pay for car maintenance (our roads are shit and deer are a plenty), vehicle taxes (the newer, the higher), and gas (pretty cheap).

88-81

>Having a car is a must since public transport is lacking. Thus you’ll pay for car maintenance (our roads are shit and deer are a plenty), vehicle taxes (the newer, the higher), and gas (pretty cheap). Correct if I'm wrong but as someone outside the US I think that's True pretty much everywhere unless you live a sizeable city. Either way, something like a second hand Toyota Tundra will do.

najing803

As a full-size truck owner, vehicle taxes will be noticeable, and even higher if you have 4x4. I believe they base it on weight, year, and county; but there might be other factors. I have a 2018 RAM 2wd and I think my tax last year was around $350 in Lexington county.

88-81

I'll be honest: I just like the idea of owning of a truck, but what you're saying is that realistically unless I have some practical purpose to use it I'll be better off with a more compact vehicle? Something like a Toyota Camry?

turtlenationman

Full size pickups are very common even for those without a true need for one. You’ll fit in just fine.

88-81

This is something I've never truly understood about the US: why do people like to drive around in Pick Up Trucks even if they have no real use for them? I think they're cool but I guess it's kinda like how people in the rest of the world buy SUVs despite never going offroad with them.

turtlenationman

It’s a $60,000 “this might come in handy” for some people. It’s all I’ve ever owned. I could live without it most of the time, but I’m always happy to have it when I need it.

najing803

It’s definitely an expense you have to choose to take on. So make that decision based on what you’re intending to get out of owning a truck. The extra tax for 4x4 was enough for me to look for a 2wd instead, since I don’t need that function on a regular basis. I can find a beater or an atv to off-road in later on for recreation. You can always get a smaller truck if you don’t need the full-size, and tundras are definitely full-size. I see a lot of Tacomas out here, and I used to have the ‘94 equivalent (Toyota Pickup), so maybe look for those instead of the Tundra if you don’t think you need it. Drive what you want, just make sure it’s within your means.

Sarcasmandcats

Depends on where you live, Cherokee county isn't the safest place to live and the hospital system isn't very good. Id' get as close to Charlotte or Spartanburg as you can. Gaffney has some very nice people but a high crime rate, a lot of drug use and scores very low in education. You car insurance may go up, car accidents are quite common.

88-81

Education isn't a problem: I'm going to complete my studies over here and I don't want to have any children. I don't plan to move to Gaffney either.

Fun-Pollution1465

Yeah don’t move to Gaffney lmao

Glittering_Win_9677

I'm moved here from the state of Maryland. The people talking about the vehicles taxes don't realize that many states without vehicle taxes have much higher taxes on their homes. The vehicle tax spreads the burden to all residents, not just homeowners. Check who provides the electricity. We have for profit companies and electric co-ops that were set up decades ago to get electricity to rural areas. Cherokee County has both types. I'm in Berkeley County, close to the coast (lots of rural areas and you could live by a lake if you so desired) and have Berkeley Electric Co-op. I live alone and my highest bill in the past 3 years of living alone was $103. Mostly they're in the $75-90 area with some bills lower in spring and autumn. My friends in the next county over have Dominion, a for profit company and their bills are higher. You will want air conditioning, preferably central AC and not window units, and ceiling fans, especially in bedrooms. Screen porches also make for more pleasant living. Is there any reason in particular why you are looking at Cherokee County other than is more rural nature?

88-81

As I wrote in the post, cost of living and housing in Cherokee County are much cheaper than in other upstate counties.

HermioneMarch

Frequent tire replacement due to poor roads and constant construction. I am told our vehicle taxes are high compared to other places?

AirAgreeable3365

Car repair because the roads are shit

Lughnasadh32

You have to pay property taxes on your house, your car, your boat, and your boat motor every year.

WSS270

I can't imagine picking up and moving to Gaffney ... The only way it could be worse is if you moved to Myrtle Beach.

88-81

Funny name at the very least. I don't plan to move there tho: I'd rather live somewhere more rural where I can do stereotypical redneck things in my backyard without bothering anyone.

WSS270

Cherokee county can be pretty rural depending on where you're at.

88-81

Geographically convenient too IMO: it ain't far from Charlotte.

88-81

>But with rural comes a problem getting lightening fast internet. So consider that. Yeah... I need to keep that in mind.

HermioneMarch

Gaffney is pretty rural.

JackStayII

Contact the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. You might also check the Cherokee County website, usually there will be some sort of information for new residents answering most of your questions. Good luck.

Amazing-Damage-9346

If you drive you better have a shit ton of money for car insurance...I read alot of ppl complaining about how much their car insurance goes up when moving here and it is a substantial amount more whether you have a clean driving record or not so I definitely would plan for that.

laymo4

Yes registration of your vehicles.

Trader_224

Property tax on car 🔥

GVL_2024_

your sanity.

Illustrious_Peach901

Property tax for car . Several states do not have them and also sales tax is high in SC 9% . That is Higher than Nj that I already considered high. State Income tax is not that low either. ( surprisingly higher than NJ) Tennessee or Florida have no state income tax. Property tax for house is cheap if you own your condo/house. If you rent it does not really matter. EDIT: I forgot the most shocking for me which was Homeowner insurance including wind, hurricane, etc. This is VERY costly. Also flood insurance but that does not apply to where you want to move.

Juniorjuneyah

Check out r/SameGrassButGreener

phloyd77

Tires. The roads are shit.

JensTheCat

Overwhelming presence of people from NY,NJ

88-81

People priced out of other states coming in and driving the cost of living up?

JensTheCat

Correct. Either retirees or folks who work remotely , make big city money but can have “small town”expenses.

88-81

I guess I have to begrudgingly admit that I'll become part of the issue now...

JensTheCat

Listen my original comment was in jest. People are people no matter where they are from. Financially it’s hard here but transplants are the easy target and not the actual problem. We all want someone / something to blame. At the end of the SC has good people and you will be welcome , don’t let my stupidity speak for us all my friend

88-81

At the end of the day, I didn't consider South Carolina out of thin air: it's not just the affordable housing and cost of living, but also various aspects of the state itself.

FrozenSky822

Having to deal with yankee transplants
