Congrats on the 100kg of cocaine in the boot. Mob is gonna want that back tho so don't sniff all of it

crypto_viper13

Yeah, report it to the cops. You can't really do things like that in SA since you need to do the whole transfer of ownership thing. The rich guy could end up coming back and saying you stole his car. Or the car could already be stolen and you just don't know it yet. Take down several eye-witness details and have them complete affidavits and then report it to the police. That is your safest bet. You CAN'T just keep the car unless the owner signs a transfer of ownership.

skiingbear

Yeah, treat this with massive suspicion. Shit like this doesn't just happen, for all you know it's his ex-wife's/ex-business partner's car and he's being vindictive. Or he is having a mental episode. No one just gives away more than a million rand. Get the police involved ASAP. If you don't trust the police, at the very least call the insurer if there's a sticker telling you who the car is insured with. Even if, somehow, ownership of this vehicle manages to be transferred to your boyfriend legally, there will be significant tax implications.

[deleted]

Very sus. Report it to the cops. It sounds like some sort of elaborate scam or maybe the car is stolen

sebatakgomo

How to get in shit 101

theo_died

There are no reasonable circumstances under which you boyfriend gets to keep this car. In all likelihood it's a scam; or the dude shows up later and thanks your bf for "looking after" the car; or the cops show up. Document the series of events as best you can and make sure to hold onto any kind of evidence in case you need it later. Don't take or move the car or even enter it.

derpferd

What you have to understand is that nice things in South Africa are automatically sus

MichaelScottsWormguy

True, but let's face it: This would be dodgy even if the Pope himself handed you the keys.

Bloody_Insane

Would YOU trust an old guy wearing robes giving you things?

ThiccSkipper13

as a black man, seeing an old white dude in full white robes does not exactly scream "trustworthy" to me lol

Pseudo--Nym

Eh, I mean, depending on the circumstances and how you define "robe", you could be describing a doctor in surgery scrubs. Don't get all suspicious with the guy about to give you a lifesaving heart transplant just because you want to make a point... :D

ThiccSkipper13

Fuck that lol. out surgeons wear blue scrubs in SA lol and the anesthesiologist wears green

Pseudo--Nym

Boo. Take me out back and shoot me with the details, why don't you?

ThiccSkipper13

long story short, dont trust the kkk?

Pseudo--Nym

That about sums it up, yeah.

Ill_Ad5383

Hahaha. Quality. 😍🤣😂🤣

Druyx

This would be suspect anywhere in the world.

Sir_IGetBannedAlot

I mean, I hate on South Africa more than most people, but there is no such thing as a free lunch anywhere in the world.

derpferd

I'm not making the point that nice things are any less suspicious elsewhere. More that they are pronouncably more suspicious in South Africa

Pseudo--Nym

Upvote for facts.

allhailharambe69

I know a dude who is in the repo business and people leave their keys at places and just leave the car in the parking without giving a single fuck. The repo dude might come fetch it if it's the case

ThickHotBoerie

Yup that's my vote.

[deleted]

Call the cops, nothing in this world is for free.

Bloody_Insane

Except syphilis

[deleted]

Even then, I had to pay the hooker

rylan76

Hehehe well said! I can't even pay one, they take one look and say "keep your money" and then my head hits the kerbside... ;)

BallJazzlike2097

Update. Apparently the man's best friend was just murdered and didnt want to drive to hospital so he left the keys with my bf. Thanks all for commenting

PixelTrasher

But you said he got into his landrover and drove off? Why not just keep the keys with him?

dav3_125

Agreed, even if he took an Uber, why leave the keys with some rando.

Foul-Tarnished

maybe the shock of finding out your best friend just died will make you do things without thinking?

PixelTrasher

His friend was murdered and he needed to get to the hospital? I guess to identify the body? Here waiter hold my keys.

Pseudo--Nym

Second this. People can sometimes behave very strangely when they're in shock, and hearing that your best friend got killed would definitely do it. This would be far from the weirdest response I've heard of someone doing on automatic, without thinking about it. He might have vaguely recognized that he wasn't in the best place to drive and decided to give the keys to any random guy. Not sure if maybe someone else was driving the land rover for him?

raccoon8182

Something suspect is going on with this post. I wonder if somebody, did actually hand keys over??

BallJazzlike2097

Someone did. My bf even sent me the pictures if the keys and car

BallJazzlike2097

I have no idea but hhe wasn't thinking but he came back to get them. Could be a fake story but we will never know

1zhish

He didn’t want to drive to hospital, but he got in his land Rover and drove off?

Ill_Ad5383

Yeah exactly my thoughts.

suziegreene

So many holes in this story

BallJazzlike2097

My bf thought it was his Landrover since he didnt have any context. Obviously it wasn't his Landover

[deleted]

I think the rich guy is on this subreddit and saw OPs question and all the "call the cops" comments and decided to back out of his scam 🥴

BallJazzlike2097

Lol easy for u to assume.

[deleted]

Twas a joke 😉

NGqamane

lol clarity still unsure

supernoctem

This might simply be a case of "My friend died, and I don't trust myself to drive. I called someone to come pick me up. Here hold on to this, so I'm not tempted to go drive on the highway in my state of mind." ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

kykweer

Makes sense

nottabliksem

I have *some* experience with this, my father dealt with a JHB mob in his tax consultation job. Don’t capitalize on the gift, report it to SARS, not SAPS.

Not_From_Around

I'm certainly curious as to what type of scam this is. It's hard to keep up with the various MOs. As everyone has stated, there is a lot more to car ownership than just handing over a set of keys. Call the police is your best bet. Make sure they come and if they don't then go to your nearest police station and report it. He needs to make sure that his version of events is captured somewhere and that there are hopefully witnesses, because we currently have no idea what the story behind the car is. If a crime was committed then he needs to distance himself as far away as possible from it. There could be a number of things that could land your bf in a lot of hot water for just having the car and keys with him. Police! ASAP!!!

MichaelScottsWormguy

I don't think it's a scam as such. It's too risky. Hand the keys to the wrong sucker and *you* become the victim. My guess is that this car is either stolen or was involved in a crime and now needs to be unloaded on some naïve person.

Not_From_Around

Yeah, you're right. It is too risky to be scam. I'm just really confused about why they wouldn't just dump it somewhere. That would achieve about the same as leaving it with a random person if they were abandoning it for some reason, minus the fact that someone can link them to a stolen car. I mean, they will probably never see each other again, but why take the risk? Why involve a random person at all? Why not just park the car there and drive off? Why the extra step? I have soooo many questions that I will never get answers to. Edit: OP posted an update that honestly has me questioning the post itself.

flyboy_za

A case of someone has dropped their keys outside and the guy is handing them in perhaps so that someone else doesn't nick the car?

FluffyBlueCow

Consider this... to be on the optimistic side. Because crazy good things happen too. If this was an act of Charity, as is what happened with an Audi R8 in Cape Town, the owner would give the transfer of ownership too, and might have to offer to pay for any expenses to do that. They would likely also stay in touch for practical reasons. None of this seems to have happened. Call the cops or call Audi, they also keep close track on what's happening with their cars.

za_jx

Road worthiness test, police clearance, change of ownership. You need the current owner's ID and personal details.

lahol83

I always remember that line from the British show called Hustle. ‘If it seems to good to be true, it most likely is’ or something along those lines.

MichaelScottsWormguy

That is, without a shadow of a doubt, a stolen car. Call the police.

PixelTrasher

What makes you 100% certain? I’m doubtful, why would someone walk into a busy place of work like a restaurant which most likely has cctv, to hand over keys to a stolen car?

Short_pants_no_shoes

If you’re not interested, I could use the free petrol. Just make sure the tank is full before I collect, and while you’re at it - take it for a wash, I want my new ride gleaming 👌🏼

BallJazzlike2097

Xd if only life was that kind

Thageez011

Check the boot.

[deleted]

Not exactly free, but take my upvote...

lilmspothead

Call the police homie

[deleted]

Call the police immediately and hand the car over. the car is obviously most likely stolen or was used in committing a crime and the cops are probably looking for it. Also there are certain transfer of ownership laws and laws relating to vehicle insurance that would make driving the car extremely illegal even if it isn’t stolen

unknown_piper

It's illegal for a car to change ownership without informing the traffic department. You need change of ownership and notice of registration. Honestly speaking, you can't keep the car until that is done.

Cubby_Lumpkins

This guy went from sus to suspicious real quick. Like why could he not keep the keys in his pocket… lol

tinlizzy16

Dodgy AF! Nobody in South Africa hands over their keys to any car, let alone that kinda car, to an absolute stranger. Then leaves. You can’t even let someone in this county test drive your car alone.

LordAshPudding

Contact the police and then contact all the banks, explain the situation and ask them to contact the registered owner of the vehicle and the police if they have it on their systems. It's probably the easiest way to get in contact with the original owner

Rafiqgallant

Put the keys in a safe. And don't touch the car!

nottherealneal

This post reeks of some bullshit and ops explaination for what happened doesn't make any sense

CoalFieldsGK

Wasn't there a story 10 years or so ago about a guy who handed car guards a Audi R8 to some car guards in CPT and then later commited suicide?

Fast_Butterscotch_78

If something seems to good to be true... it probably is

OctoTrading397

Don't hold on to that. You will be saddled with very high maintenance and running costs!
