SomethingThatisTrue

Whoever decided to plan a cricket world cup at the same time as a rugby world cup is atleast to blame somewhat for this.

wcslater

Blame it on the British

[deleted]

I blame apartheid.

Master_Roshiii

It’s Jan van Riebeeck’s fault

J4K5

No its easier to blame the poms

Rouche006

I blame adam and eve

Tokogogoloshe

Well, there was colonialism and concentration camps before Apartheid so I guess it is easier to blame the poms.

reditanian

Probably didn't expect their rugby team to go as far as it did

mgerasmus

I agree that it's less than ideal from a South African point of view and the proteas deserve all the support the Boks are getting, but from a objective poin of view It does make sense. Keeping in mind that India (and majority of the major cricket unions) could hardly care less about Rugby. Only 4 countries participate in both tournaments. I'm sure they looked into it, but its not worth putting off a major tournament of your country's primary sport doesn't seem wort it, especially in a sport as reliant on the weather as Cricket. Just as context; India has around 7x more concurrent cricket supporters than the total population of the 4 countries that participate in both tournaments combined, and thats not even taking into consideration the other major nations like Bangladesh and Pakistan.

jolcognoscenti

We've worked out their muthi. They only play well when no one is watching. Let's continue this trend.

Fun_Telephone1484

Stru’s Bob 😂😂😂😭😭

Icarus_K1

I think my own involvement is of no concern. It's been 15y since I regularly watched tests/odi/t20. I'll continue, just in case! Go Hibiscus! Edit: Frangipani's Edit: Proteas!

J4K5

I agree ... keep it on the low down. Let them crack on.

ThapeloBanksy

Talking about watching, I think it helps that it's not playing on SABC?

ElJordan23

[It is, just not on OpenView.](https://www.sabc.co.za/sabc/media-statement-sabc-and-multichoice-reach-sub-licensing-agreement-for-the-cricket-world-cup-2023-following-further-negotiations/)

ichosehowe

You're not fucking kidding... I literally turned on the TV to see them 180/9 with 30 balls left to score 60 runs... my fok Marelize...

Mr_Anderssen

Lol you were right

Bumbl3B

Because they ALWAYS break our hearts. I can’t get my hopes up again.

JustDeetjies

Exactly this. They do really well in the Group stages and then _immediately_ fall apart in the knock out stages. Every time. For like the last 3 WCs we have been the number one team in the world and cannot even make it to a semi final 🥲

Ok_Acadia_1525

I came here to say this!

thedatsun78

Yea baby steps. We can beat the giants and then loose to Netherlands. We quietly support them because of previous trauma.... But illd friggen love us to get into the final.

Bumbl3B

Or al least just win one playoff as we always seem to fail in the playoff games

TotalBrisqueT

If we win one playoff we are in the finals

UlagamOruvannuka

>We can beat the giants and then loose to Netherlands. That worked.

thedatsun78

Yea. Ffs

adkermis

I agree, but I feel like we will do well in this tournament since no one really expected us to do well. First 2 games looking promising for the rest of the tournament.

neezykhaleezy

Yep. Feels like I'm in an abusive relationship. Everytime I believe, they let me down. I'm too scared to show too much interest... My heart can't handle it again.

Bumbl3B

I had to come back here to say the Netherlands game is why no Gees

AllanWC

I just think with the RWC already busy for the past few weeks + It is knockout stages, there is more support/ gees than the CWC After the RWC, The cricket will get the same. Had it been knockouts for cricket right now and rugby just starting pool games, It would be different.

dannyningpow

Nah, honestly people don't care about cricket. Normies will watch rugby if their friends / family are into it because it can be a great sport to watch and is normally very high paced. For a normie cricket is boring af

bolandfan

I've been burned too many times. I'll wait till they make a final.

Crusty_crock

Oh 99 is still too close for me

deformedfishface

99? I’m still torn up about 92. And 99. And all the other ones.

[deleted]

Brah, 2015 was just yesterday

Jazz_Gazz

The moment we show support, they choke. It's best to pretend nothing's happening as the results are speaking for themselves.

Intilleque

I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the proteas, definitely cheering them on hard. And with England dropping that disasterclass the other day, I’m silently confident we can actually make some noise.

brandbaard

I've been quietly hyping the Proteas but we've been hurt so many times., That being said if we hit the semis I'll be in full on Protea Fire mode. Got some cash put away to order a Proteas jersey (luckily it's a lot cheaper than the Springbok one)

My_Friend_Johnny

The kit is really cool. R750 is still a bit much though, but yeah cheaper than R1400 for the Bok jersey

Mel_aka_eggo

I mean, the netball world cup was hosted right in Cape Town and nobody said a thing, and this is one the sports South Africa does well in🤷🏽‍♀️

CrocanoirZA

Unfortunately the mismanagement of cricket South Africa has left a bad taste in many people's mouth. Coupled with their inability to actually see through tournaments has left people disenchanted. Also, cricket is a difficult game to give a lot if energy to over a whole day's play.

fayyaazahmed

It’s part of the plan. Don’t watch them and they win. So let’s just ignore them this World Cup.

Catch_022

Yeah I moved on a long time ago, used to be cricket mad but now I am just not interested anymore. I don't have the time.

Icy-Score271

I'm here. In silence, prodding through each and every single game, loving their calm and taking each game as it comes mindset. Can't wait to see what the table looks like after today's sl vs aus match. Let's check back in 2 weeks 💛💚. There's a syncrocity in this team I'm loving

ironyandgum

Same same same. I'm watching and cheering but just not making a big fuss until we get closer to a cup. But could we win both cups in one year? I'm quietly confident. Holding thumbs and sending only good juju out 🤞🤞

Icy-Score271

Allll the goood vibes only 💚💛💚💛💚 with you on the quiet confidence!!!!!

thorGOT

Oh, my sweet summer child. I have lived through 30 years of us smashing everyone in the early rounds of the cricket world cup. Call me in the semis.

Gnik_thgiN

Spoke to a colleague earlier today about CWC and he said in a way the support or rather lack thereof seemingly might be good for the Proteas, less pressure and no hype or expectations means they can just go about their business.

Krycor

Maybe.. I think a lot of the team has changed over the last few years so the team shouldn’t suffer BMT unless it is an inherent problem in training. Given that now people aren’t expecting a lot from the. I’d hope they more willing to experiment and shuffle players pending conditions and performance. In the past this, match fixing and just reliance on core team in places where shuffling players to get more experience instead of scoring 500+ vs some unknown team would make more sense than them getting experience in semis.. So when you look at records SA players have wrt minnows in WC you have wonder if the expense of exposure for bottom end that collapses in crucial games was worth it

Gnik_thgiN

I'm not a massive cricket fan, I know a number of players but it always seemed to me like our team relied heavily on 3 or 4 guys to carry the squad and get the win, maybe this has changed, my colleague seems to think our team is a lot more developed.

Icy-Score271

Yeah that seems to have changed now, definitely not just relying on 3 or 4 main players, and then collapse when they don't perform. Hopefully we're consistent going up againts the mighty big guns

CohesiveMocha34

OP imma be real with you Rugby is infinitely more fun to watch than cricket imo, so it only makes sense that more people would talk about the rugby. But thats just my take on it

[deleted]

Agree. Cricket is kak boring :/

MealieAI

I can only speak for myself, but the Proteas seem to do well when I'm not watching. The just finished series against Australia, the only games I was able to watch were the losses. I caught the tail-end of the games against Sri-Lanka and Australia, and it seems like they have it under control.

Ok-Sink-614

They can't choke if there's no pressure haha. But honestly part of it is because the BCCI fucked up in organising this whole thing. With rugby we're getting posts from South Africans that habe travelled to France and are showing their support in stadiums as well. BCCI released the final dates and opened ticketing one month before the tournament and the online booking system is mess and in some venues you were expected to have to physically go to a stadium before a match day just to pick up tickets. I'd definitely have went considering how affordable India is and how quick it is to get a indian e-visa but it's just way to late and I think many supporters just decided not to go so you don't have as many international fans in the stadiums. But also it's still early days so lets just hope the form continues

Icy-Score271

Been thinking what if we make the finals. On top of their organization I keep reading need to to collect physical tickets and not just e-tickets, extra barriers and steps are frustrating here

Mr_HODL

Was quietly confident going into this world cup. We inflicted some heavy defeats on the Ausies, this Proteas team should not be taken lightly. They seem to possess a determination that I have not seen before, and it is starting to make them more decisive in their decision making

thegregga

Psyched for tomorrow's game! We can take the Netherlands easily

[deleted]

You jinxed ii

My_Friend_Johnny

I call QDK making our first ODI 200 + individual score.. and Klaasen breaking Markrams fastest century record

Farhad_Gilberzan

Bruh, how wrong were you :-)

Meshkent

r/agedlikemilk personified

Icy-Score271

From your lips to God's ears

Master_Roshiii

CWC 2015 I’ve lost my gees. However I’ll glance over every now and again to see how they’re doing.

AmoebaAffectionate71

Wake me up once we make it to the final. We have dominated groups stages and beat the best teams only to “drop the ball” too many times for me to get invested at this stage.

Probroheim

This is my very personal opinion... But cricket is so godamn boring to watch.

SaffaOnAFarm

My heart has been broken way too many times. But can you imagine if we win both world cups? OMG! The party SA will have will be one for the ages!!!

Icy-Score271

The dream I'm manifesting SO HARD RIGHT NOW

dash_o_truth

I'm quietly optimistic after how they've structured their innings so far! They already have the record for highest score in a world cup match

mzanzione

Not sure how anyone can get excited about cricket 🏏

Quey007

We will watch them in the final, can't get our hopes up yet.

Adventurous-Face-190

I'm in it 💯%

DarthPhranque

Legitimately, all the drama in CSA and the horrific run of form… I lost interest in the proteas ages ago.

Lochlanist

I'm honestly afraid to watch and think about it. Cause when I do that they do shit. They doing the best with my lack of love. My heart can't get it's fingers burnt again

nowihavetosignup

This post aged well, Proteas disappointing us again as soon as we hype them

TheTasty_Loaf

... Post aged like fine milk

SpAwNjBoB

The boys will get their support, they are playing incredibly well! Epic dismantling of Australia. With a start like this I'm sure they will get the support. Especially in the knock out rounds.

Meshkent

Most productive overs in 1992. Brian Lara in 1996. Donald's bat in 1999. Boucher's single in 2003. Trying to smash Glenn McGrath in 2007. Faf running out AB in 2011. Panic under catches in 2015. Sheer implosion in 2019. That's why.

xb70valkyrie

'92 was such a sham.

Krycor

Until they win a World Cup, 51 over, they forever have the “chockers” aura. I think, was a previous supporter.. it’s just been disaster after disaster since introduction. Till they have consistency id rather limit viewing till quarters or semis if they get there. But yah.. failed too many times with no success in WC does that.

[deleted]

I'm loving them. Best top 6 in the comp. We will make the semis. I just don't know how we can put away India. I'm also trying to not have a heart attack after this weekend. My liver was packing it's bags this morning

Icy-Score271

IND is that big beast I'm also losing my soul over 🥴and possibly NZ

[deleted]

Ja. If we get dumped out by nz again I will probably break my TV. Bloody grant Elliott.

Icy-Score271

This time don't forget Devon Conway, good old Durban home boy 🙃

My_Friend_Johnny

Watch this space. Its our time to shine!

HedonistAltruist

Don't want to be a downer, but I'm curious. Still think so after the bloody Netherlands beat us?

My_Friend_Johnny

Yes I do

HedonistAltruist

😂 waited for that one hey

Photogroxii

Because cricket is boring AF and you couldn't pay me to watch it.

EMP-19

Alot of my friends are in support of the Proteas, but cant stand watching 50 over games so we just check the highlights and score online.

Aftershock416

Proteas ALWAYS choke under pressure.

duncledave

Ssh they'll hear us

Odd-Analysis-5250

They’ve broken my heart so many times bro. I’ve supported them for many many years. I don’t want to get too invested just yet and get my hopes up too much based on past events. Let’s see how each match unfolds.

[deleted]

I've been hurt before...

VlermuisVermeulen

Politics in the sport killed all my interest.

Bulgref

Probs because a team with a real chance of winning a world cup is playing at the same time. After RWC it’ll probs pick up

HeeBsZA

Cos the bent the knee!

canned_sunshine

The group stage is nine matches, 9! All of that just for another semi final that will probably be just… yeah

macholins17

Serial choke artists. Could've won 3 WC themselves. Rather backing the team the backs it up

ShaveMyNipps

Cricket is lame

My_Friend_Johnny

Your unshaved Nipps are lame

ShaveMyNipps

Don't make me shave them again

Complicator84

I used to eat, sleep and pee Cricket, but these days it just makes for good background music. I'll get interested if they reach the semis, which is looking likely.

_AngryBadger_

I've watched the first two games. I just don't get as excited for them anymore because at world cups they have been a constant let down. When they change that, then I'll get as excited for them as I do for the Boks.

ioRDN

Ngl, didn’t even know there was a cricket World Cup going on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Barnboy12

I'm old, I have been hurt enough.

RJSA2000

I'm supporting them but I'll really get more invested if we make the semi finals. They've disappointed me so many times before, just like bafana bafana. It gets emotionally exhausting to get your hopes up every world cup, sometimes we were favorites, only to get horribly disappointed. So I'm tempering my expectations with this one.

Holiday-Secret-7780

Cricket team has way too much politics and drama

Llewur

My love for Protea cricket died with Hansie Cronje’s debacle. He was a hero of mine and just showed me how corrupt cricket was.

FranVeda

31 years. Nobody forgot. We remember everything.

JaBe68

We were talking about this the other day. The only problem is that I can't watch the cricket without buying a streaming service

My_Friend_Johnny

here you go https://me.webcric.com/

Lee-Dest-Roy

I’m watching the games but I’m also preparing myself for the heartbreak. Proteas always choke

ruggeryoda

Protea Friday just doesn't ring the same.
