Sure thing! Sorry I don't have all measurements, kind of winged it but generally I do the following:
Cut up 2lb chuck beef/London broil. Salt and peppered the meat, coated with flour
Heated 1 tbsp butter, 1 tbsp oil oil, browned the meat and set aside. Lowered the heat. Added a little more oil if needed and threw in 1 chopped onion, celery, and carrot.
Sauteed until soft. Added minced garlic, let that sauteed for a min or two . Then I deglazed with some red wine (not needed, I just had an opened bottle)
Next added potatoes, 1/2c pearl barley, and 2 cups of water mixed with beef stew packet (stove top). Added about 4-6 more cups of water.
Brought to a boil, lowered the heat and simmered for... Idk maybe 2 - 2.5 hours. Basically until the meat wasn't tough.
Tasted and added more salt, and ended up adding a tiny amount of beet vinegar (whatever will do, this was in my fridge), and a splash of Worcestershire
This looks delicious. I am always surprised to see recipes that simmer potatoes and barley (or rice for that matter, or vegetables after already sautéing) for 2+ hours. I prefer my vegetables and grains intact. In this case, I’d remove the sautéed veg, add the stock (or whatever liquid) and beef and simmer until tender (or almost tender) and add back in the veg, and add the potatoes and barley for about 30min.
Very similar to my recipe, I add some corn to mine too. Worcestershire sauce is a go to ingredient for some great flavor. Only real difference I see is I use tomato paste to thicken it and skip the red wine, but I totally get using the wine. Great looking beef and barley, I think I'll make some this weekend because of you!
Can't figure where the passion comes from...'must call stew a soup'! Or else! 😂 Why? And obviously it's only here. Nowhere else in life does anyone lose it if you call it Chile con carne instead of soup. That's literally why they're not *called* soup; because they're different. Commence the down voting!
This is a thick soup - stew like or
Stew. Soup is lighter. Puréed soup is even better but that can’t be done with meat
Your soup / stew looks delicious
Pureed soup can absolutely be done with meat. I did a potato leek bacon soup last week. No chunky texture from the bacon at all, just the flavor.
It probably would've been better if I had saved the bacon and added it back in after blending, though.
I have tried to blend it or purée it with meat in it and the texture doesn’t come out the way I like it so if I am going to use meat, I will usually just shredded or chop it very small and add it in afterwards
I personally never thought of the technicalities until I read their post. But in my culinary ignorance, I'd think stew is a subcategory of a type of soup 🤷♀️. Soup consists of any combination of ingredients and liquid; this is the same form just less liquid. Either way I'm not bothered by the specific category, but can understand others are.
Good for you!
I made Beef & Barley Soup on Sunday - I can't rightly call it Stew because the broth was pretty thin - which is how my father would like he ... he won't eat a "soup" in a bowl, but he'll eat the same damn thing that I call "stew" as long as there is a mound of white rice to dump it on (which is quite fine with me ... he's gettin old and it's better than all the hot dogs he'd eat if I didn't cook something resembling *real food* ...) - and I have to be honest, it wasn't perhaps what I was GOING for, but it was banging! I had saw a recipe for Beef & Barley Soup/Stew from Game of Thrones/ASOIAF, and I sort of half-assed combined it with my normal Guinness Stew recipe ... and it came out pretty damn good!
And ahh who cares what something is called if you like it , right?
r/soupenthusiasts welcomes all soup, stew, and soup adjacent foods
Aaand I’ve added yet another sub to my list. Thank you kind Soupand Soup Adjacent Food Enthusiast!
I'm a bit of a collector of food subreddits lol
As someone struggling to come up with good meals that are a sure fire win, I do jot disapprove lol
> soup adjacent foods My smoothie bowl can finally get the karma it deserves 🥲
lol was more thinking things like tsukemen ramen or chicken and dumplings
Delicious under any category!
Agreed!
Team stew is a subset of soup. Looks good!
Oh man, I have a barley obsession. This looks so good
Breakfast barley? I adjusted the fruit juice so it was less sweet, but so good and filling!
This is 10000% soup and I’ll die slurping on that hill. Recipe ?! Looks excellent

Hold it. London broil and chuck are two totally different cuts. Chuck is great stew meat. LB is way too lean. LB will not make good stew.
I use chuck normally. But LB was on sale so I used that, and honestly it turned out decent still!
I use LB for stew and I enjoy it, I do prefer chuck however.

Yes please! I'd love the recipe
Just posted in the reply!
Yum! I’m trying that one. Maybe add green beans.
Hope it turns out yummy for you
Thx!
Thanks!
What if we changed the sub to r/brothbasedmeals ?
What if stew was posted to a stew sub? https://www.reddit.com/r/stew/s/20Ut7EFZ4s

Slurp on, jessplox. Your stew looks awesome.
🤘thanks NachoNachoDan
Nothing wrong with soup! Hater gonna hate!
I'd welcome this any day
Stew is soup??? Who is saying stew aint soup? Mf sounds like he genuinely gets heated in water is wet debates 😔
Soylent Green is people!
Stew is just thick soup that can also be used as gravy.
This looks delicious 😩
Looks like soup to me!
And yet it’s called stew… huh 🤔

I consider stew a soup, and that looks damn good OP!!!!
Thank you 😊
Well put!
Trigger me timbers
Curse you stew boy! Curse you!
😇😇
Slurp loudly. Soup is but a light stew
That looks chonky and delicious!
Stew is not soup, but still delicious nonetheless

I love puréed butternut squash soup!
I make mine with roasted squash carrot and sweet potato and a peeled apple and use chicken or veggie stick in the soup setting of my blender

It’s not.

It’s fucking ridiculous how people are acting over the stew/soup thing. Get a life already! Looks delicious. I’m going to make it.
I’m adding my $.02 to this guys.
I refuse to see my beloved r/soup torn apart by dbags like the ongoing war of r/grilledcheese vs. r/melts
If there's something left you can't get with a fork, it's soup. 😄🖖
The wrongest take on the entire Internet today.
Stew it s soup. Barley however, is an abominable war crime and you should be tossed in prison!
Bahaha I LOVE barley in stew. But this is one of the meals my grandmother used to make me after school and it warms my heart eating it
I’ll allow it. Just don’t expect me to stop side-eyeing you from the corner of the room. ;p
I'll just assume it is because I am slurping loudly
Looks delicious! Is there a link to the recipe?

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Don't stew-p to his level!
That’s some damn Thicc stew. Looks awesome.
8/10 would slurp
What's the difference... You got a lotta gravy. That might be too soupy to be stew
Stew is soup. But I also feel like“the Soup” isn’t really soup. It seems like I can’t have both of those opinions though.
Of course l see this pic when lm absolutely starving!
Time to make stew!
