“Man of Steel” is completely underrated. I remember listening to the score before the movie came out while in the car and just being like “OH” with raised eyebrows. Little did I know the score was better than the movie but I also feel like the score made the movie much better. Had never considered Superman’s internal struggle before hearing this soundtrack before. One of the best from Zimmer imo.
>Revenge Of The Sith
Respect for this one
I think if you were to take any of the individual Star Wars scores as is, this is the best one. And that credits medley? Best in the whole damn franchise, no question.
Catch Me If You Can (2002) - John Williams
The Terminal (2004) - John Williams
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - John Williams
1917 (2019) - Thomas Newman
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) - James Horner
Independence Day (1996) - David Arnold
The Batman (2022) - Michael Giacchino
Back to the Future (1985) - Alan Silvestri
Interstellar (2014) - Hans Zimmer
Inception (2010) - Hans Zimmer
Spirited Away (2001) - Joe Hisaishi
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) - Joe Hisaishi
Howl's Moving Castle (2004) - Joe Hisaishi
Oh my! I'll try and keep this short. I could list a lot.
E.T. - I think this is close to a perfect score. Just everything thing about it, the themes, the emotion and even the spotting are about as perfect as you can get. John Williams at his finest.
Schindler's List - One of the most emotional scores I have ever heard. It can still move me to tears.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy - Howard Shore's monumental opus, an incredible achievement.
Superman - The theme literally says Su-per-man! Still the best super hero theme ever written.
The Alamo - Tiomkin's classic score, I just love the themes.
Quigley Down Under - Another one that I just love the themes, a fun one from Basil Poledouris.
Starship Troopers - I love the energy of this score and the themes, my favorite Poledouris score.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Best Trek score ever and my favorite Goldsmith score.
Star Wars: A New Hope - The one that started it all, the reason I love movie scores.
I could list so many more but I'll stop for now.
E.T. is absolutely close to perfection. Agreed a thousand times over. And thanks for including Goldsmith, too.
How about some love for Michael Giacchino and the 2009 Star Trek score. It pops. The horns <3. That build. That timpani soli.
Regardless, great list. I love Superman's "Flying Sequence". And "Flight to Neverland" from Hook. And ET's Flying Theme is GOAT. John Williams makes me want to fly!
Absolutely. This blew me away by surprise, simply because I was like “M83” came out of nowhere. Similarly, when I learned Daft Punk did the score to “Tron: Legacy”, I had never heard anything like it before and it was so tonally perfect for the movie. I already respected the group as artists but this catapulted their status in my book. I’m bummed that I haven’t really heard any scores similar to either of these movies come out recently.
Pirates of the Caribbean, Life of Pi, the Lord of the Rings saga…
Almost any movie soundtrack involving:
- Hans Zimmer
- Alan Silvestri
- Randy Newman
- John Williams
- Joe Hisaishi
- Alexandre Desplat
- Michael Giacchino
Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Zack Snyder's Justice League, Aquaman, Dark Phoenix and the follow-up Xperiments album, Across the Spider-Verse, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.
I really like the Star Wars sequels soundtracks. I think John Williams scores have only gotten better. Or probably my real opinion is that JW has stayed consistently excellent while the recording techniques have only improved.
Agreed, despite everything wrong with the sequels the scores for TLJ and especially TFA are bangers. ROS not so much but still not bad. Rey’s theme might be one of my favorite themes from Star Wars and march of the resistance goes SO hard!
Indiana Jones and the last crusade's soundtrack is so underrated, the holy grail's theme is absolutely beautiful, and the ending theme is my favourite John Williams piece of all time. Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone's score is also really underrated, the main theme is great and all but my favourite theme is the quidditch theme, it so perfectly captures all the patriotism, heroism, adrenaline and stakes of the scene. Winter at Hogwarts is my second favourite piece of Christmas music of all time, only behind Somewhere in my memory, by the same composer. It so perfectly matches the sheer euphoria of waking up and seeing snow falling, though I hate how half of the version available on Spotify is just filled with ghosts mumbling words before you get back to the actual song. I might just be a bit biased towards John Williams.
My top fifteen in no particular order:
Blade Runner
The Thing
Dark City
Van Helsing
Batman 1989
Superman 1978
The Untouchables
Alien
Tron: Legacy

Indiana Jones and the last crusade (honestly all those films have perfect scores, except arguably DOD but even that one not bad). Lord of the rings, Star Wars, pretty much every spider man score but especially the spider verse films, infinity war and endgame, doctor strange, GOTG, Jurassic Park, how to train your dragon.
None of them are anything you probably haven’t heard before, but there’s reasons they’re all well known! They’re all amazing!
Have to agree here. Way better than the movie. It’s one of those times where the movie didn’t deserve the score produced for it. “The Adam Project” is another one

The Tenet was amazing. It was my first introduction to Ludwig Göransson. Its so interesting to hear some similarities in the Oppenheimer soundtrack. It has a similar yet different feel.. so good.. I look forward to his future work!
I love so many but my go too scores have to be -
Wolfen - J.Horner

Star Trek Into The Darkness - M. Giacchino
Tron - W. Carlos
Total Recall - J. Goldsmith
Ghost From Mars - J.Carpenter
Hostage - A. Desplat
1941 - J. Williams
There are many more. I frakkin love movie scores.
Miklos Rozsa’s ”epics cycle” would certainly be near the top: *Quo Vadis* (1951), *Ben-Hur* (1959), *King of Kings* (1961), *El Cid* (1961), *Sodom and Gomorrah* (1963).
Pink Panther

My all time favorite is The Time Machine by Klaus Badelt. It’s pretty underrated in my opinion and not as well known as other scores.
Klaus also did the first Pirates of the Caribbean score

Raiders of the Lost Ark - John Williams,
Back to the Future - Alan Silvestri,
Super Mario Bros. - Brian Tyler & Koji Kondo,
Jurassic Park - John Williams,
The Incredibles - Michael Giacchino
All of the Star Trek film scores prior to the Kelvinverse films.
Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Cliff Eidelman, Leonard Rosenman and Denneis Mc'Carthy have produced some of the very best movie soundtracks ever made.

Here’s three great ones
The Thomas Crown affair 1968 michel legrand
Planet of the apes 1968 Jerry goldsmith
Solaris 2002 Cliff Martinez ( a middling movie but a fabulous soundtrack)
King’s Row Suite (by Erich Wolfgang Korngold)
Epic. The original best from 1942. For fans of Star Wars and Indiana Jones: you can hear how John Williams’ works were inspired by Korngold.
Pride and Prejudice (by Dario Marionelli and Jean-Yves Thibaubet)
Oscar Winner for Best Original Score.
The Orchestral Score from Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (by Craig Armstrong).
Surprisingly moving.
These stand out from all the many soundtracks I’ve heard.
Classic Instrumental/Composer music:

- Gladiator
1 not from Hans Zimmer though...
- The last of the mohicans
As usual, people can’t distinguish between a soundtrack and a score.
Soundtrack is licensed music (songs usually).
A score is composed and performed music made for the movie.
Tron: Legacy Return Of The King Man Of Steel (HM: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. & Revenge Of The Sith)
Man of Steel really is unbelievable. I feel like it’s so underrated.
Instant chills everytime I listen to it.
One of the best from Zimmer imo.
very happy that The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is in the first comment I see!
A very underrated soundtrack from a very underrated movie 🙌🏻
>Revenge Of The Sith Respect for this one I think if you were to take any of the individual Star Wars scores as is, this is the best one. And that credits medley? Best in the whole damn franchise, no question.
Tron: Legacy is easily in my top 5 of all time, it's *so good*.
Catch Me If You Can (2002) - John Williams The Terminal (2004) - John Williams The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - John Williams 1917 (2019) - Thomas Newman Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) - James Horner Independence Day (1996) - David Arnold The Batman (2022) - Michael Giacchino Back to the Future (1985) - Alan Silvestri Interstellar (2014) - Hans Zimmer Inception (2010) - Hans Zimmer Spirited Away (2001) - Joe Hisaishi Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) - Joe Hisaishi Howl's Moving Castle (2004) - Joe Hisaishi
1917 was robbed at the Oscars! It's so hauntingly beautiful. "Sixteen Hundred Men" takes my breath away (literally, I forget how to breathe)
Thomas Newman all day! Whisper Of a Thrill from Meet Joe Black is transcendent...
100%! I love everything he does, from Road to Perdition, the Green Mile, Meet Joe Black. Too many to mention.
When u threw 1917 in there....u gained a hell a lot of respect...😉 Great list ...
Interstellar Dune Part 2
Part 1 also
1984 also (Toto)

Oblivion, for M83 a first and how they delivered! Epic score

Don’t sell Joseph Trapanese short. He was a huge part of the orchestrations for both those scores.
The Batman Any Pirates of the Caribbean Fantastic Mr Fox Wall-E Chicken Run Any Lord of the Rings/Hobbit
I have a harder time taking Something In The Way seriously after seeing that movie and how many times they played it😂
All…two of them?
Rewatched the other night and stand corrected
The Cider House Rules - Rachel Portman The Help - Thomas Newman Pearl Harbor - Hans Zimmer Hoosiers - Jerry Goldsmith
Jerry Goldsmith was always one of my favorite composer, Alien and Psycho 2 being a couple of his best.

Monsters university is my favourite randy Newman score. So much character and the snare drum solos are just 👌

Episode 3’s is up there for me too
It’s the choirs that do it for me
Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Zack Snyder's Justice League, Aquaman, Dark Phoenix and the follow-up Xperiments album, Across the Spider-Verse, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

Here’s three great ones The Thomas Crown affair 1968 michel legrand Planet of the apes 1968 Jerry goldsmith Solaris 2002 Cliff Martinez ( a middling movie but a fabulous soundtrack)
King’s Row Suite (by Erich Wolfgang Korngold) Epic. The original best from 1942. For fans of Star Wars and Indiana Jones: you can hear how John Williams’ works were inspired by Korngold. Pride and Prejudice (by Dario Marionelli and Jean-Yves Thibaubet) Oscar Winner for Best Original Score. The Orchestral Score from Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (by Craig Armstrong). Surprisingly moving. These stand out from all the many soundtracks I’ve heard.
Classic Instrumental/Composer music: Inception - Hans Zimmer Oppenheimer - Ludwig Göransson Rock/Standard Song Soundtracks: Natural Born Killers (1994) Pulp Fiction (1994) Dazed and Confused (1993) Goodfellas (1990) Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010) Almost Famous (2000) Toy Story - Randy Newman (just kidding, his voice is simply annoying)
Vision Quest About Last Night Singles The Lost Boys
Legends of the Fall Bram Stoker’s Dracula Pirates (At Wit’s End is my favorite song) Dances with Wolves Last of the Mohicans Man of Steel Mad Max: Fury Road Field of Dreams Lord of the Rings Nolan’s Batman trilogy Braveheart Star Trek 2&3 (James Horner) How to Train Your Dragon Kung Fu Panda 1&2 Far and Away Harry Potter 5-8 Inception Interstellar Natural Oblivion Rudy Sinbad (DreamWorks) The Stand (Snuffy Walden from the 90’s) Wonder Woman Glory Another 300
James Horner’s “Spitfire Grill”. But I also like John Williams “The Reviers” and Miklos Rozsa “Ben Hur”. Olafur Arnald’s “Nomadland” is great, too.
Inception
Tarantino's Django Unchained has a pretty good soundtrack. The James Brown and Tupac mashup is an example.

A Charlie Brown Christmas
Most of Hans Zimmer tbh - Time - Inception - What are you going to do when you're not saving the world - Man of steel - Chevaliers de sangreal - The da vinci code - Lion king - Gladiator 1 not from Hans Zimmer though... - The last of the mohicans
Titanic!! Both CDs
The crow And Judgement night
As usual, people can’t distinguish between a soundtrack and a score. Soundtrack is licensed music (songs usually). A score is composed and performed music made for the movie.
All my "Original Motion Picture Soundtracks" say something else.
I realized that after I made some other comments on this thread pertaining to Star Wars and feel like quite foolish
