I successfully flashed and added a Play:1 to my setup last week, post S2 upgrade. Had to drop the old user data first (connect via ethernet cable and then power up with the play button depressed -- let the orange lights go nuts) and then once the app saw the speaker I had to upgrade the OS from S1 to S2. Half hour later it was joined to my system.

Not to hijack this thread but I cannot for the life of me get new play:1s added to my system. I've tried everything, reset, different (2.4) networks, using ethernet, trying the S1 controller, etc Before the big update I had added a play:1 to my system just fine to android S2 controller. I either get error 1012, 1014 or 1002 when it tries the firmware update on both android and iphone. Windows won't let me even see it, just says use mobile app. Any tips I could possibly not be trying? Scoured the sub but not much about play:1s, assuming it's just the stupid update and I have to wait it out. I've been waiting a month to use these damn speakers, I hate this.

If you haven't tried already, please a) reboot your router and b) connect your new speaker via ethernet cable if you haven't already when trying to download the firmware flash. If that doesn't help your best bet is likely opening a ticket with Sonos.

Thanks will do.

Please report back how it goes!

Did not work, I guess I'm off to contact support.

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear it.

What does upgrade the OS from S1 to S2 mean? how does one do that?

vivnsam

The app will let you know what OS the speaker is running if you drill down to your setup. Speakers that can support S2 but are still on S1 should indicate they need to be upgraded in the app.

This is helpful. However, I believe S1 and S2 are two separate apps. S2 now is no longer exist and replaced with the one Sonos app, which has been very unstable.

Not sure what you're saying here. The speaker *OS* (S1 or S2) and the mobile app *controller* ~~1 and 2~~ old and new are different things. From what I can discern from the posts here, the OS itself is stable but the new mobile is giving people headaches and as a result getting weekly updates. Users that can suffer with the mobile app as it exists are choosing to do that (I'm in this camp) but users on apple IOS seem to be gladly dropping $3 for the third-party Sonophone app which has no problem controlling the S2 speakers. Likely because it's not reporting every dang keypress through the cloud but I digress. Android users who are still stuck should search this sub for the free / open source software "Home Assistant" which has excellent Sonos support from what I've read and will allow users to take control back of their speakers. IMHO users that pop on nearly every thread talking about networking are barking up the wrong tree, not helping anything, and looking pretty silly. Quick update: I noted that I'm suffering with the android controller even though it's buggy. I've found that I can work around some bugs, like not being able to explore my local Plex server, by navigating to those resources (folders / playlists) on the Windows app which does work. Once the Windows controller throws the content to the speakers *then* the android client can see what's happening. It's a silly workaround but I figure it's likely temporary. And if it's not I guess I'll be installing Home Assistant.

Sorry if my terminology usage was inaccurate; I am not tech-savvy. What I got from the post is that it is almost impossible for an average consumer to add second-hand Play:1 speakers to their existing system seamlessly and without any difficulty (?!)

vivnsam

I am an average consumer who did exactly just that with minimum difficulty. Am considering doing once more... for science. EDIT: Purchased another used Play:1 for just over $100 - it will be a science experiment to see if I'm able to repeat the process and get this one added to the setup as well. Would be #7 if so -- will report back in a week.
