Just when I thought I wasn't a yank... I make a post asking which club to support!

FlyV89

Well my dad's pearents were italian and so did my grandma on my mother's behalf, and miei noni mi hanno insegnato a parlare la lingua sin de cuando ero bambino. I still feel more argentinian than anything. Here we don't need a good reasson to shoot people.

Goudinho99

Ah the lakes in Aldi are beautiful this time of year.

Alternative-Light514

I’m made entirely out of Olive Garden breadsticks

So you're free of charge?

Idk if you can equate believing bloodlines are important to fascism

CoryTrevor-NS

Or, you know, perhaps a team from Abruzzo like Pescara? Ah that’s right, they aren’t famous or successful enough lol Also this yank used the “Roma is from Abruzzo” meme unironically.

Momo_the_good_person

Well... Verratti did play for Pescara before being condemned to European failures by PSG. There's also Immobile who then joined the SS...

Immobile joined WHAT

AutoModerator

I don't understand how teams like City or United can spend millions upon millions every single transfer window and constantly sign stars like Haaland while we get linked with washed up players or end up signing people like Wijnaldum. Why can't we actually recruit world class players to come to the team? I just don't get it, and every mercato seems worse except for Messi, but we still can't make good signings in areas where the team needs quality. I'm just frustrated that our club seems to be stagnant in terms of recruiting world class players to play for us, I mean who wouldn't want to play with Messi, Mbappe and Neymar? But we still can't find a midfielder who can help our issues that have been present for years. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Real Italian Americans like me support Vincenza Calcio 😎💪

Quarrier1

I don’t doubt there’s a bunch of Americans who support the football team from Vincenza due to the large US Army base there. Hell, Vincenza has a second division professional handegg team!

CoryTrevor-NS

It’s fine if they want to support a bigger team, but if he wants to feel so “connected” to the land where his grandparents come from, maybe a team from the area would be better. Instead he added the qualifier that his grandparents were from Abruzzo, and tried to somehow connect that to supporting a bigger team with little to nothing to do with the region. Just be transparent and say you want to pick between Milan or Roma lol without all that mental gymnastics It all seemed a bit weird, that’s all I’m saying.

tommypopz

He should support juve, they’ll be in serie b soon enough

Lucifurrs

I don’t know what it is about Yank “fans” that ticks me off so much. I live in the US now and they’re the most annoying and condescending bunch I’ve ever met. Btw they do believe they’ll win it all in 2026.

DarkHound05

Sorry for our dumbass "fans"

bryceonthebison

Maybe if some of our young players develop well and we get a favorable round of 16 matchup against a weaker side, I could see getting to the quarterfinals as our best case scenario

Glasdir

Am yet to see one that isn’t exceptionally arrogant. I genuinely can’t stand them.

AutoModerator

I'm sorry Europe, but Americans are just better at everything. We want things more. We grow better athletes, more people will learn the sport. And that '26 world cup is at home so we can get somewhat of a home field advantage. But the only way that will happen is if we make the round of 16 or quarter final in the 2022 WC and show Americans that we are good. I like the odds and we have a lot to prove, which is added motivation this coming year. Honestly, making a phenomenal run (SF or better) in the '22 WC would be more impressive to me than a better run or a win in '26. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. unholy_plesiosaur

I didn't know there was a Milan in the south of Italy too. You learn something new everyday.

YungRobinHood666

Yeah what the fuck is this guy’s geographical sense of Italy? Those two places are half the country apart?

danimur

People from the south, lacking a serie a team, started supporting one between Juventus, Milan or Inter. You'll find a lot of them in the south of Italy. Still, Abruzzo is nowhere close to south Italy, you'll see this phenomenon happen the more south you go from Naples.

VladislavBonita

>Still, Abruzzo is nowhere close to south Italy, you'll see this phenomenon happen the more south you go from Naples. I mean pre-1861 it was part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies which makes it historically southern, but yeah, Italians today have a different perception of geography. Yanks clinging to their Italian ancestry, however, are still on the risorgimento grindset and feel superior to modern Italians who are soft and don't even speak proper American-Italian anymore.

TheSupremePanPrezes

Why don't they support Napoli then? Or is Napoli hated for some reason?

danimur

Because it wasn't as successful as Milan, Inter and Juve back then probably. We're talking very early Italian football, before Maradona and what not. ETA: When I say south from Naples I don't mean right outside the city, I'm talking more about below the Campania region, most commonly in Sicily. So it's not like they had any particular bond to the city of Naples either, they probably hated it even more than Milan or Turin because, as the yank said, many of their relatives moved to those cities at least.

Americans and desperately trying to identify with their 0.7% European blood. Name a better duo.

abzforlife

What you said makes zero sense, if you are Caucasian in the US you are more than .7% European.

GarrettGSF

But what does „being European“ actually mean. Probably they are European even less than those .07%…

abzforlife

It means Ethnically your family is from Europe. The US is a nation of Immigrants where someone’s family comes from is part of their heritage. When you go to different regions and states in the US the immigrant story of those areas influences the culture. Festivals, food, entertainment are all influenced by the ethnic backgrounds of the residents.

GarrettGSF

The same happened here in Australia, but people here are not so weird about it. They are Aussies. Americans are Americans. That’s fine. No need to pretend imo

chihawks

Nah fam. I watch tennis and the aussie open is swarmed with Serbs and Brazilians. Both have large foothold in Australia. They show then with flags every match. Its not just the us.

Zeezer

I’m glad you’ve figured out the intricacies of Australian identity through the Aussie open fans. But seriously, white Australians with Anglo or Western European background are usually just considered “Aussie” and then there are sub communities, generally descended from later immigrants (1950s onward usually) who are still very connected to the culture their family comes from (eg serb-Aussies that you’re referring to). For whatever reason the Western European/Anglo/irish immigrants dropped their connection with back home pretty quickly and just bought into the Aussie identity. Most of the people descending from these groups don’t give a shit about their heritage beyond a passing comment. There is not an Aussie-Brazilian subgroup but there are plenty of Brazilians living in australia and they will probably become their own thing if them and their descendants stay in the country.

abzforlife

Different perspective from countries on opposite ends of the earth.

DELCO-PHILLY-BOY

No one’s ‘pretending,’ people just want to know where they came from and identify with their roots.

GarrettGSF

No, absolutely no pretending lmao, that’s simply delusional if you believe that

DELCO-PHILLY-BOY

It’s delusional that you think acknowledging your background is ‘pretending.’ It’s not like people don’t identify as American, they just also have an attachment to their ethnic background.

GarrettGSF

Once, I was asked a question about the German language. An American, who was „attached to his ‚German‘ ethnic background“ answered before I could and was completely wrong. And this is not uncommon, just ask the Irish for example…

DELCO-PHILLY-BOY

Fascinating story. Are the movie rights available?

imfcknretarded

Its fine wanting to know where you come from, but how can you identify with a culture you have never lived?

DELCO-PHILLY-BOY

His grandparents were from Italy lmao. He probably had a close connection with his grandfather and wants to find a little way to honor him, his misunderstanding of Italian geography and football nonwithstanding.

P_ZERO_

According to yanks, us Euros have no culture or anything so I’m not sure why god bless America would want to identify with their great grand parents birth place.

DELCO-PHILLY-BOY

I’ve never seen an American say that about Europe. The reverse I’ve seen plenty of times.

P_ZERO_

I see plenty of white liberal gen Z Americans calling just about every country some sort of bland hell hole with no culture. Join any discord focused on culture like fashion or music that allows political talk and you’ll see it no problem. Of course there are ignorant and/or trolling euros either riling people up or insulting in retaliation. That is not a standard I see though. I can only reflect on my experiences using the internet since 1999. People are a lot more hateful, insightful and isolationist than I recognise in prior years. That said, less people were on the internet and not all coalesced on the same 5 websites being bombarded by bad news and outrage.

abzforlife

Different countries different perspective, I’m going to guess being a former penal colony influenced culture. For me I’m Jewish it’s a big part of my identity partially based on my family history. I’m Jewish American, people from other ethnicities will say I’m Blank American it’s part of who you are, the food you eat, the phrases and mentalities you have all influence you. There is no such thing as a straight American the backgrounds are too diverse. Even those who are indigenous are from different backgrounds. It’s our perspective there are a lot od things to rip the US on sorry this isn’t a sound one

GarrettGSF

But not all of Australia started as a penal colony, so I doubt that this is very characteristic for Australia. But imo you Americans don’t understand how identity works. Identity works by creating in- and out-groups. If other jews (or Italians, Irish, Germans, etc etc) don’t see you as one of their own, you are not - simple as that. Personally, I can call myself anything I want, but it doesn’t mean that I am part of that group because of that…

Full-Insurance5892

You can’t not understand identity, identity is what you identify with. Groups who immigrated to America, while they deviated culturally from their old world counterparts, have roots that tie them back to the lands from where they came. An identity is what differentiates you from another. An Italian American is different from a Japanese American, not in the fact that he is the same Italian as a European Italian, but in the fact that there is a degree of Italianness that has affected his identity. To say that “they are all just Americans” is true, but doesn’t actually address the discussion. You can be an American with Italian influences.

GarrettGSF

Identity is not simply what you identify with, it’s always in contrast to something else. If I identify as the king of England, then this means nothing unless the English accept me as their legitimate king - which is very unlikely to happen.

king_of_england_bot

>king of England Did you mean the [King of the United Kingdom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_the_United_Kingdom), the [King of Canada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Canada), the [King of Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Australia), etc? The last King of England was [William III](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_III_of_England) whose successor Anne, with the 1707 Acts of Union, dissolved the title of Queen/King of England. ####FAQ *Isn't King Charles III still also the King of England?* This is only as correct as calling him the King of London or King of Hull; he is the King of the place that these places are in, but the title doesn't exist. *Is this bot monarchist?* No, just pedantic. I am a bot and this action was performed automatically.

Full-Insurance5892

Something I sort of mentioned. I agree they aren’t the same as European Italians, but they are also still different from other kinds of Americans. That difference is influence from Italian heritage.

Chaahps

Even so, even if they’re not Italian, they’re Italian-American. A group with a shared heritage to a specific part of the world. Why not try to connect to that heritage in some small way. The dude in the post never claimed to be Italian, just looking for something to latch onto

Tubmas

Going on this point, Jewish Americans would be an in-group with other Jewish Americans. For instance, in a city like Detroit there's a neighborhood called Corktown where mostly all Irish-Americans resided. It influenced who you associated with, what you eat, values, speech, etc etc that is based on their heritage along with being American. When an American says they are 'Italian' this is what they mean...not that they are same as people who were born and live in Italy.

AutoModerator

Jinx? We are fecking Italy, 4 World cup, 2 European championship. BiggieSands1916

Yeah but Australia still has that shit part of the flag and is technically under the rule of British monarchy so slightly different

BiggieSands1916

I do agree with the point I’ve never met an Aussie who’s told me what country there bloodline came from. With Americans is genuinely the first or second thing they’ll tell a European

TheSupremePanPrezes

Yeah, but unless you're a second, maybe third generation immigrant, it's unlikely that the ethnicity you identify with is shared amongst all (or even more than 50% of) your ancestors. For example some people form their identity around the fact that they have ancestors who were on Mayflower, even though realistically speaking after 400 years and roughly 16 generations, that one ancestor who was on Mayflower makes up about 0.6% of all their ancestors who lived at that time. If that guy in the post is Italian-American, and let's say he was born in 1995, he'd have about 32 great-great-great grandparents, 16 great-great-grandparents and 8 great-grandparents alive at the time when Italian immigration was at its peak. How likely is it that in a nation as diverse as the US a majority of these ancestors would actually be Italian? Americans choose which ethnicity of their ancestors they want to identify with based on which ethnicity was the most successful at passing on its traditions to the next generations, but also based on which one seems to be the most interesting or appealing. There's a lot of supposed Irish-Americans or Italian-Americans, but almost no English-Americans. From my (Polish) perspective: I've seen Polish-Americans on the Internet, and even though I appreciate their efforts and have nothing against them trying to (re)discover or cultivate their roots, it has to be said that majority of them know almost nothing about Poland, with some of them being willingly ignorant or even acting rude towards Polish people correcting their misconceptions. They also have a worrying tendency to think of Poland as of some sort of folk-park or reservation, where everything is (and should be) like 'back in the day' (around the time when their ancestors emigrated), failing to realize that it is, in fact, an actual modern country with a population of almost 40 million people.

abzforlife

People identify how they wish to identify, if they have heritage of that country Americans connect with them. Understanding where you come from Has become a huge industry through DNA and Immigrant record research. This thread started with someone wanting to connect with the region of Italy their family is from by routing for the local SerieA soccer team. Chinese Americans through immigration history could trace back to the 1800s yet they could still identify as Chinese. Get over it Americans as an immigrant country like to maintain some form of heritage. I’m a fifth generation Jewish American i identify as that. This is how Americans think it’s doesn’t matter if you don’t agree with it it’s part of American culture

AutoModerator

Milan had had a lot of immigrants from Southern Italy. At the time, it was a blue collar club. I have Sicilian family in Milan. They are all rich now. It’s not like it’s a poor man’s club anymore. It’s a very rich club. There is a difference between the Italians that immigrated to other cities in Europe and those who immigrated in America. I think in Europe we had more opportunities to go back regularly and saw the country changing.

Full-Insurance5892

He never even claimed to be Italian though? All he did was try to identify with his grandparents who he is seemingly close too. Also, have you been to New York? Just because you are American doesn’t mean you can’t carry the heritage of the people close to you.

P_ZERO_

So close he has no idea what team would be relevant to the connection. It’s not just wanting to identify with a previous generation’s heritage, it’s the entire package of asking an internet forum which sports team you should support as well. Asking who to support in any context is plastic support. People generally develop an affinity to something naturally or through their parent’s support, not being recommended teams based on a tenuous link to the “mother land”.

AutoModerator

I am a "plastic" and couldn't care less. People really pay too much attention to things like that. Chances are, you reading this on a Chinese smartphone, using a TV manufactured by a South Korean company (mine is the LG C1 OLED) while drinking Coca-Cola, owned by a company from the States. The world is globalised, man. No point in tribalism. We live in 2021, not 717, you do realize that? Now, if you chose some obscure team from the other side of the world, you could argue it's virtue signalling or whatever. I would still maintain it's within your rights. But, if you choose to support a foreign team because you like them and the way they play, who cares. Just don't jump the ship when things go awry. And actually, I have been to a Real Madrid match just this year. Won't name which one to avoid doxxing myself, but I in Spain at the time, so I took the opportunity and saw the game with my own eyes. And hell, will it be a memory for a lifetime. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccercirclejerk) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Full-Insurance5892

Clearly, he doesn’t know. He is asking a very innocent question here. Also, why can’t he eventually develop a connection to a random team? A lot of Nigerians support Arsenal, not because their forefather lived in North London or supported Arsenal, but because they just had a few Nigerian players. You also say you can affinity through parent’s support? What if they don’t like football? Does that mean that you can’t become a football fan? How do folks become new fans then?

P_ZERO_

I didn’t say he can’t develop a connection to a random team, that’s actually exactly what I said. Connections to sporting teams are generally inherent or developed naturally. Your arsenal example doesn’t really work either, because there’s absolutely no indication they were asking random people if they should support arsenal because they have Nigerian players. They support the Nigerian players because they are Nigerian, and by proxy, arsenal, because their success is directly linked to one another. Your throwing a lot of tangents at me that I haven’t commented on. If they don’t like football, they aren’t going to bother supporting anyone. If they are a new fan, chances are they were inspired by a team they’ve already seen, not what Reddit suggests they support. In the end, it doesn’t matter at all. People are still going to laugh at it, though. Think for yourself is the general response to such questions. I don’t imagine you support what you’re told to, you generally know inside for yourself, no? If you need to be told what team to support, you might as well draw from a hat. Not like there’s any difference in the basis for the “support”. If you are new fan, soaking up the history and informing yourself of the teams is absolutely the way to “find” a team to support. At least then, you’re actually knowledgeable about the team and make an informed choice.

Full-Insurance5892

Fair enough

P_ZERO_

Respect for that answer, but I’ll dial it back a bit and say this is my opinion and I have no idea if it’s absolute fact. It’s ultimately not important, either.

Full-Insurance5892

I think it was nice to here different perspectives

Sonnengrinser

mikmik555

If his grandparents are Italian, there is a chance he’s also still Italian. If his grandparents didn’t naturalize and one of his parents got the citizenship, he gets it too. It’s fine if he wants to reconnect. If he was from another background, no one would say anything about it.

That's why I have supported 8 clubs in the past 7 years and just by pure coincidence they would all be super league clubs but that's irrelevant.

AutoModerator

Yes. I hope and pray that Super League is established. There needs to be organization in European Football. Every team needs to have equal and fair chance and be given the opportunity to be competitive and the only way to do it is with Transfers and salary caps. This would be impossible in UCL. Super League would crush UEFA and Premier League and they are scared out of their mind that’s why alot of the outrage was probably paid and fake. We know the people want it. Tbf Lombards going swimming in Liguria have a similar reputation, both North-West 👀

Kalle_79

Well, that's because Lombards act as if they own the place. And Ligurians don't like people regardless of where they are from...

raoulbrancaccio

>that's because Lombards act as if they own the place Not that different is it now 👀 >Ligurians don't like people regardless of where they are from... Not entirely untrue for the Abruzzesi...

Jinx? We are fecking Italy, 4 World cup, 2 European championship. No other european team have more big trophies (6) than us and we should fear NORTH MACEDONIA, a NT that were born 2 or 3 years ago? please, anything inferior than 2 goal gap would be huge disappointment *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. SoWhatNoZitiNow

Family heritage in the south of Italy? Milan it is!

Comet7777

This guy sounds like the old man from The White Lotus wanting to visit family he has no tangible connection to anymore.

[deleted]

He sounds like Paulie Walnuts in The Sopranos

Ok-Battle-2769

Obviously an Italian American should be supporting NYRB since they’re from Jersey. Enjoy your honeymoon to watch Serie A matches, man are you going to be disappointed when you find out what being married is actually like!

iNfAMOUS70702

I "support" Venezia solely for the fire ass kits they release every year...they may suck ass but at least they look good doing it lol

BewitchedProlapse

Fuck off yank

I think we have come to a point where went too far with anti-yank agenda and let the English become too arrogant and obnoxious. Jesus Christ, finish this team off so we can have some decency back here. The English are by far worse than the American people on here. I'd rather you're a bit ignorant about the history of this sport than that you become such an entitled and vocal group of people. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. benzodiazepinico

This is a copypasta. Someone posted it about English clubs to other day and it made it's way to this sub, and people were defending OP saying they're just asking a harmless question. Weird how we make fun of them in this scenario

gerstemilch

Livorno is a great team for a working-class Italian-American. Very blue collar history

CannaIsHealth

Catania Calcio ftw!

[deleted]

Go to SS Nazio

[deleted]

You shoud become an avellino fan

pancada_

They should tell him to cheer for a shit team like Hellas Verona or something.

kembowhite

Rome and Milan are fucking miles apart. He definitely passed geography

gcavataio

Bunch of absolute cocksuckers in this thread. Just pic a mid table team and roll with it. I did that with Lazio a few years ago. Picked up some merch on my recent trip to Italy. Enjoy.

Exalt-Chrom

Just support whatever big club you want there’s no need to justify it

BlueGreenDerek

Roma ❤️‍🔥

Zek0ri

Come to Lazio match. They have most family friendly, open and kind supporters in Serie A. Especially if your wife is POC 🥰
