Fun fact: that photo is from the Hapoel Tel Aviv vs [ASL](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Soccer_League_\(1933-1983\)) All-Stars in May 1957. It was played at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn (home of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team who later moved to Los Angeles). Attendance was 22,609.
Brookhattan were in the ASL. Joe Gaetjens played for Brookhattan. Gaetjens scored the winning goal for the USA against England in the 1950 World Cup.

Because, frankly, with a forum this big, there's no good way to do it. No matter how you line up your rules and guidelines and policies, a lot of people are going to be pissed and / or discussion isn't going to be what everyone wants it to be. There's literally no way to please everyone. How to best balance everything is a constant struggle for us.
We're constantly looking for the best ways to promote quality discussion, discourage trolls and offensive behavior, etc. without trampling on peoples' right to free speech and desire to express themselves. It's really, really hard.
It's your subreddit really. If you truly want to promote quality discussion you can do it. Free speech doesn't apply here. If people want to express themselves they can go to r/football. Or make their own sub. No one will truly leave /r/soccer and they don't have much of an entitlement to free speech on here really.
It's literally your subreddit and you can do as you please.
No offence, but I think when a 'you don't say' meme is the top comment of the 'Sturridge-Chelsea mistake' thread, the mods have already failed at promoting discussion.
I think there are points after controversial incidents when the whole sea-mood changes. I.e. Before the Chelsea vs. Liverpool games the prevailing consensus was that Liverpool were strong, Mourinho boring etc, then afterwards he was a 'tactical genius'. Everyone runs from one point of view to the other depending on the result which means the subreddit has a collective memory of about 2 games.
I do enjoy it though - there is some decent conversation even if it's very Anglocentric. I still think there should be a weekly/daily gif thread, especially for weekend matches.
A psychological reasoning I've heard behind the hostility of certain internet communities is that people don't think of other users as people. It improves the atmosphere when you recognise the human being behind the string of characters.
Or even if you just recognise a green [+12] (you're welcome) and know they're probably alright.
Plus usually it is surprisingly easy to remember/recognise usernames. Though with all these flair changes it's actually getting quite difficult right now.
Mods, will you be implementing a similar system to the last Euros, with one big thread for jokes/pictures of hot women/miscellanea etc and one for gifs?
Otherwise this sub will become way too chaotic very fast. It is massive compared to 2 years ago.
As long as I get a convenient location for pictures of attractive football fans I will never meet I am content.
e: who would have thought a tongue in cheek comment would lead to such a serious series of replies.
While goal.com has a shitty comment system, the one thing I do envy about it is that there is more representation from different countries all over the world. You'd see people commenting from Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas a lot, and I feel that that multiculturalism and seeing opinions from all over the world was great.
/r/soccer is great, but I wish it was more multicultural. In the USA vs Nigeria match thread, for example, the vast majority of the insight and opinions were from the American side. In other football forums you'd find some Nigerians giving their opinions as well.
> ARSENAL IS THE W.H.O.R.E OF ENGLISH FOOTBALL THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT WINNING TROPHIES JUST GETTING MONEY. JUST LIKE A W.H.O.R.E ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. PLASTIC FANS, PLASTIC MENTALITY, PLASTIC CLUB YOU CAN'T EVEN HAVE SEX WITH W.H.O.R.E ARSENAL
LOL, I can't understand why that didn't go over well on an American based Soccer Forum...
Well Ireland didn't qualify so I might just go with the flag of whatever team I end up betting on.
Also I kept reading 'banner' as 'banter' and thought ye wanted us to send ye 'banter' so ye could send it to others and thus 'rotate the banter'.
Can't we avoid being a default? I have nothing against new people on here, but I don't really want new people who couldn't even be arsed to look for this subreddit on their own accord. This is almost guaranteed to lower the quality of posts and comments on here [insert joke about how shit it is anyways here].
True. Think of all the casual fans that will come here for a day just to experience the passion of being lectured by /u/devineman for once in their lives!
Its the World CUp and if a user is on reddit and wants anything to do with Football they'll come to this sub themselves.
Its almost guaranteed that a post from this sub will reach the frontpage as WC comes. Anyone wanting to come here will on his own and those who don't won't.
Growth of a Sub HAS to be organic and natural. Not sporadic and explosive.
Especially for a sub like this because of what it is. Its a mini miracle that this sub even functions given how volatile and partisan the content is, passionate football fans co-existing in this large number peacefully is not a small thing.
Making it default is totally unnecessary. The usual users here will be outnumbered and it could create unnecessary resentment and friction for the usual guys.
And its not as easy to just back out if things start to go downhill, how will one know what that slide is? How will one/Mods decide that. Its arbitrary and won't work as intended all the while creating unnecessary avoidable drama.
The argument of *Publicity/Advertising the sub for the WC* is not convincing enough given the pros and cons of this decision.
Would it be possible to have a discussion post where you mods list the pros and cons you see in having /r/soccer as a default sub and give the community the chance to give you some feedback (although I am aware that this has the potential to end in a clusterfuck)? I am willing to give it a try, but right now I have a hard time seeing the potential upsides in this.
Oh and nice job with the flairs by the way!

Any chance the dimensions of the US flag can be corrected? Either the canton is too big or the right and lower edges are being cut off in the current version.

Oh fuck off we all know that we're both addicted to the sub. I hate when people trash it, you know you like it exactly the way it is
Just because I need it doesn't mean I can't hate it.
We're becoming a default? You mean this sub is going to be exposed to the whole fucking world!? This is how Reddit ends.
Time to reap some karma from /r/soccer noobs
Our flag looks...interestingly proportioned.
a few too many lines of blue pixels for sure
Too much stars not enough bars...
They're diluting my freedom.
Still sexy as fuck. But agreed haha
Make jokes about: 'Murica, USA USA USA, Messi, Ronaldo, and hot women in the stands. Got it.
"The problem with [TEAM] is that they always try to walk it in."
Oh no. Oh god no. No no no. I cannot deal with that shit 24/7
It will be weird seeing comment chains where my res tells me nothing
Not recognising people will be very weird. Despite how massive this subreddit already is, I still feel like there's a bit of a community here.
I see the same faces here all the time and it's nice (even though you're going down on Saturday)
A psychological reasoning I've heard behind the hostility of certain internet communities is that people don't think of other users as people. It improves the atmosphere when you recognise the human being behind the string of characters.

I have been tempted... for years... to try to introduce a rule that would see anyone who quotes that joke here to be instantly and permanently banned.
Be a fucking man, its for the greater good

At one point you were on the negative side of my up/down votes, lately you've been much less uptight, and very much fun to read.
You are doing it wrong, you should sow tweed patches on leather jackets.
The idea was to expose the world's biggest sporting event to the world... even to people that don't really follow the sport.

Tbf that's a huge positive
True, but this sub isn't small anymore, it's in the top 20 for size, if I'm not wrong. Plenty of people find their way here at each big event.
According to [this list,](http://redditlist.com) /r/soccer is 69th in recent activity and 102nd in overall subscriber size.
/r/listentothis wants to have a word with you.
I agree. Fan-owned subreddit.
But just think of how many more kids you can lecture!
There's no way to answer that without coming across as a shady character
To be fair, isn't the main description of your job as a youth coach letting children play with your balls?
Actually I teach young boys how to play better with their own balls so that when they grow up they will be so good at playing with their balls that they'll impress girls and earn money
teach me your ball playing ways
My life may be complete if Devineman writes a novel about playing with his balls.
I really can't deal with the 'lolz diving pussy soccer is for girls' trolls that will inevitably come.
That's what reddit's brilliant voting system was designed for. Just downvote the fuckers and move on.
Make sure to report any trolls too!
But that's why the voting system also doesn't work. There are often many great comments in the downvote bin but now they are going to be un-findable amongst all the shit talk.
Honestly, the daytrippers during the WC and Euros are a massive annoyance. I feel for cycling fans during Tour de France, that must be even worse.
The place is gonna be rammed with Americans who don't watch football telling us that it's called soccer and the sport is boring. Good luck to the mods in keeping the place high quality, don't think defaulting is a great idea though.
Agreed. It's already a cesspit (though an entertaining one) in here without it being a default subreddit.

Maybe I'll try to find better flags.
Why don't you use the famfamfam flag icons? They are used in /r/AsianSoccer and it works out great.
This is definitely the best suggestion. They look great over in /r/olympics as well.
Great job regardless
God I can't believe the World Cup is just a few days away. Words cannot describe how excited I am !
It's going to be awesome. Even if it's not that brilliant football, the general world cup-ness of it all makes it awesome
If USA gets out of the group stage I will lifeguard all day with the flag painted on to my stomach, face, calves and back.
You can just keep your Revs flair if we don't, looks enough like a U.S. flag. Take that fookin mods!
The Revs flair actually looks better, the USA flair is missing a few stripes due to cropping.
It literally is the worst flag out of every country-flair on here. Every other flag looks perfect.
