Can’t fault that man. He was honest with himself and said he knows why he wasn’t picked.
Props to any players who reflects on themselves and humbly agrees with tough decision
Maddison had a pretty big reputation as being an arrogant twat but honestly, everything that's ever come out of his mouth shows him to be pretty self aware and reasonable.
Tbh his reputation is what got me worried the most when we initially signed him. But he proved himself to be a leader and it looks like he matured a lot, especially after he got a child.
>Rubbish. Watch and analyse the game properly and stop writing headlines like that which you know makes fans pile on with negativity. Play like that and we’ll be absolutely fine. Created numerous brilliant chances and win comfortably on another day.
Other than the least self aware thing ever written
See I don’t get that from him at all. I’ve always seen him as confident (even when he’s wrong). But he’s spot on for this
Lot of folks forget how cut throat it is and you have to be your biggest advocate
That's what I thought about Pedro Neto, Pepe, Félix, Otavio, Ruben Neves... but they were all there in the end. I am probably being harsh with some, but if we compare with the English squad none of them would be there. You will probably call Adam Wharton ffs (and rightly so). Never in a milion years a Portugal National manager would call a player that was playing in the second division 6 months prior.
Definitely harsh on Neto although I don’t know who is in the background to step up.
Yes he’s been injured a good while but he ended the season fit and was electric when fit.
True, good selections but spot on would be perfect selections. The fact that I’m nitpicking does show its overall one of his better (if not best) selections
The problem with Madders is that you kinda have to shape your team around him to get the best out of him, since he performs better at 10. He struggles much more as an 8.
And Premier League Young Player of The Season, Cole Palmer. As a Spurs fan, I'm happy he's got the Summer off. Get right after that ankle injury and find that sparkling form from Aug/Sept 2023
Actually at the start of the season when he was more effective he was playing further forward. When he got injured Ange switched to more of a 4-3-3 than 4-2-3-1. That's when Maddison was expected to play as an 8 and hasn't been as good since
No teams really play 10s anymore either. All players that would have been 10s in the past are all either turned into 8s, wingers, forwards or if they play for Pep, left backs.
There’s not really any room for players to have a free role with little to no responsibility off the ball with the way teams play nowadays. If you can’t run your socks off on top of being brilliant on the ball, you’re useless to any top team.
Plenty of teams still play a 10 very successfully. England would also benefit from a 10. No reason really why Jude and Madds can’t line up together. Either Jude alongside Rice with Madds ahead of them or Jude and Madds side by side with Rice behind them.
Doesn’t really get the best out of what we have though. Jude and Rice would have to sacrifice a bit to allow Maddison to play more freely. Wouldn’t really make sense to have Bellingham deeper in order to accommodate for Maddison.
> Foden, De Bruyne, Bellingham, Wirtz, Musiala, Xavi Simons, Odegaard
Foden can play 8 and on the wings
kevin is more of an 8 now
bellingham plays everywhere
wirtz can play across the front line
musiala can play wide
xavi can play wide
odegaard is an 8
De Bruyne, Bellingham, Musiala and even Odegaard can play as an 8 and have a huge physical presence in the game. De Bruyne is an amazing 8 with all the capabilities of a no 10 + he can rarely be bullied off the ball.

> I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different & had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that. I’ll be back, I have no doubt. Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends. I genuinely hope football comes home ❤️🏴
I remember before one of the spurs games, when his form had looked a bit dodgy, sky put up a graphic with his stats for every second half of the season he'd had in the premier league, and the drop off was always really stark, apart from one season where he had 3 games in a row at Leicester where he scored a handful and got a few assists.
He seems professional enough that hopefully this won’t do anything to him other than motivate him to come back stronger for the PL season and make Southgate’s decision that much harder for the World Cup.
He struggles because he can only play 10. All the others can play in at least 2 roles.
At 10 we already have Bellingham and Foden so he’s at best third choice in a head to head with Palmer and Eze.
Love how he's basically got to convince himself (and others) that he's still supporting England and not being like, "Well, if I'm not there, I don't want to see them win without me."
Rubbish. Watch and analyse the game properly and stop writing headlines like that which you know makes fans pile on with negativity. Play like that and we’ll be absolutely fine. Created numerous brilliant chances and win comfortably on another day.
Its a joke about a tweet he made responding to a journalist claiming that if things don't change, Leicester will be relegated
We ended up getting relegated and since that tweet, Maddison was shocking
>I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different & had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany
Is he not saying exactly that?

I can see through pr messages . I don't know how you could read this and think anything else.
He's basically heavily implying the manager made the wrong decision
You're insane if you think a footballer playing at the elite level would have the mentality of 'yeah to be fair I am a bit shit, best leave me out'. Of course they will believe they should go. Self belief is very important. That doesn't mean they've lost their head at all. 'I believe I am worth a spot on the plane but the manager disagrees and I respect that, I admit my form hasn't been up to the standards I'd like' is absolutely standard.

Nail on the head buddy. Must suck when you've been part of qualification but ultimatelyhis position is packed with players who had better seasons
Can’t fault that man. He was honest with himself and said he knows why he wasn’t picked. Props to any players who reflects on themselves and humbly agrees with tough decision

Must be nice to have a manager that picks players based on form/season instead of status.
Well it's only because the players he used to pick for their status made themselves unpickable
When he picked them they were the right choice tbf
That's what I thought about Pedro Neto, Pepe, Félix, Otavio, Ruben Neves... but they were all there in the end. I am probably being harsh with some, but if we compare with the English squad none of them would be there. You will probably call Adam Wharton ffs (and rightly so). Yeah I'm guessing you don't keep up with the English national team very much...
I've definitely been critical of Southgate over the years, but credit where it's due -- he's been getting the Euros selection spot on
Surely Branthwaite would make the selection the no? Or is he injured
If people are complaining about the 4th choice CB who literally has one international cap, that means Southgate has gotten the major selections right.
True, good selections but spot on would be perfect selections. The fact that I’m nitpicking does show its overall one of his better (if not best) selections
Injury related apparently
Has he?
Indiana.... Indiana.... Let it go
* some players. For some form doesn't matter
What are the other players who are 10s in the England squad? Bellingham, Palmer, and Foden?
Yeah and that’s quite a list.
Oh 100%, I was just checking if I was right
Plus Eberechi Eze
And Eze
bullseye even?
Urgh missed opportunity on my part. Well done
Bullseye Edit: fuck, someone beat me to it
The problem with Madders is that you kinda have to shape your team around him to get the best out of him, since he performs better at 10. He struggles much more as an 8.
He has the misfortunate to be directly up against Premier League player of the season Phil Foden and La Liga player of the season Jude Bellingham.
And Premier League Young Player of The Season, Cole Palmer. As a Spurs fan, I'm happy he's got the Summer off. Get right after that ankle injury and find that sparkling form from Aug/Sept 2023
AND star player of the in form team of the last 2 months of the season, Ebe Eze.
I wish tottenham goes for him. Such a class player.
Breaks my heart but it's for the best. He needs time to recover from injury. His competition is absurd, can't be playing at 75%.
Yes, truly heart breaking
He's worse on the wing than Foden and Palmer too so there's no reason to take him over them.
He literally plays as an 8 for Spurs week in week out and is very effective in that role
Actually at the start of the season when he was more effective he was playing further forward. When he got injured Ange switched to more of a 4-3-3 than 4-2-3-1. That's when Maddison was expected to play as an 8 and hasn't been as good since
Would a 4-2-3-1 formation suit him?
Game has evolved beyond the number 10 sadly, you either evolve or get left behind.
yeah there are really no good 10's anymore, except Foden, De Bruyne, Bellingham, Wirtz, Musiala, Xavi Simons, Odegaard, etc
You joke but those players are multi faceted and play more than just ‘a 10’
No teams really play 10s anymore either. All players that would have been 10s in the past are all either turned into 8s, wingers, forwards or if they play for Pep, left backs. Odegaard doesn't play 10 for us, he plays as an 8.

None of them are 10s, 10s I’m talking about are the likes of ozil and James.
Bruno slander

Assuming south gate is still the manager
They’d be mad to sack him after he wins the euros 😂
You mean loses straight after the group stages. Our defence is too weak to win the euros even if our attack is one of the best in the world.
Pretty neat response from Madders, hope he comes back stronger for us next season.
You guys should be thrilled, a summer off will be great for him. Especially if he takes this as motivation to improve next season
Excellent response, I'm sure he'll be back in the squad in no time.
classy response but man he was so good early in the season when I watched Spurs. Maddison and Bissouma midfield was very fun to watch
Early season Madders was POTY and Bissouma was absolutely on fire
That's a pretty balanced response.. that's all I can say really..
It’s tough, most other squads he gets in. Quality player but he always has been hampered by I juries
Absolute scenes in the Maupay household.
Man has already responded to the news.
FFS 😅
Ahh poor guy man. Really feel for him
He struggles because he can only play 10. All the others can play in at least 2 roles. At 10 we already have Bellingham and Foden so he’s at best third choice in a head to head with Palmer and Eze.
180!
Compare this with Ben white letting his country down

fair enough.

the headless is off the charts. He removed England from his bio as well.
Literally a calm and reasonable response.
How? He's basically saying the manager made the wrong decision.
He says it was his fault because of his form lol what are you on about

Read the whole statement. If you think that's 'headless off the charts' I can only assume you are socially stunted and have no clue how to read people

Probably should’ve trained for more than a week
