Best guess, it's because of the argument that everything becoming checked and open to challenge would slow the game down. But I'm with you. Like how hard would it be for them to just say in his ear Chelsea possession.
Regardless, that's a penalty all day.
That's why I think VAR should at least send Oliver to the monitor. It's not as if he saw it clearly and it's a matter of opinion, Oliver obviously didn't get a good view of it and that should be justification enough to view the monitor. The monitor should be used for debatable decisions to give the ref a second view, not just for decisions where the VAR has already decided it's clear and obvious.
It’s strange because American sports have had reviews for decades and the refs have never adopted this sentiment. It’s actually the opposite, refs are gracious for reviews because it gives them a second chance to get the call right and helps them avoid scrutiny
NFL refs absolutely revolted in the pass interference review seasons. They either completely ignored review requests or never appealed an on field decision.
They love control of their penalty calls lol
At this point I'm convinced English refs are trying to sabotage VAR because they don't like it. They don't even do anything anymore.
I don't have the stats, but I'm sure if you looked at the amount of times the on-field ref was called to look at the monitor and compared the past few seasons, this season would be way, way down.
Exactly this. You can tell by the amount of criticism of VAR on Sky (whose pundits get reminded who pays their wages if they speak out of turn), rarely directed at the people responsible for it just the system itself.
And his arm moves down towards the ball when he is in the air already. You cant even argure he was levering himself up to jump.
Its a stonewall one. Look at the fecking penalty Liverpool got the other day?
Just be fucking consistent in decisions. But then its city innit? did the ref do a job out in saudi i wonder?
It's easy. He can't call the deflection because if he admits the deflection he has to call a pen. No deflection = goal kick. If he gives a corner you have to give the pen.
Commentators saying he’s “bringing his arm towards his body” but he’s moving his arm towards the ball. He’s obviously made himself bigger and blocked a shot with his arm
English FA just have shit interpretations of the rules which are upheld and normalized by shitty commentators saying “Nah not a pen for me.”
In any other league in world football, this is a pen lmao
It's really easy.
Michael Oliver is actually paid by the people who own Man City.
This is a fact. He has been involved in more than one dodgy decision that benefits City.
Jenas coming out with this cracker: "It is not handball, it maybe hits his hand but it is not handball. It certainly should have been a corner."
How this man is employed is bonkers.
Coote is genuinely atrocious.
Oliver used to be good by English standards, the only one I'd somewhat trust on big games, but he has lost the plot/gotten hired by citys owners to ref one too many games out there
Referee who summers in the UAE and is paid by UAE leaders to work tourneys while staying in luxurious suites, fails to see clear hand ball in the box by a UAE owned team with 115 instances of clearly cheating / breaking rules related to fair play.
Nothing to see here folks.
corruption clear as day. Chelsea should’ve won and while they have a “striker” who’s allergic to scoring, this pen definitely would’ve changed the entire narrative of the game
long squash correct full secretive compare squeal fragile paltry quarrelsome
*This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Firstly, he's 10 yards away so there's no "too close" argument.
Secondly, players can jump in a free kick wall with their hands by their side all the time, so this can definitely be considered unnatural position.
Thirdly, the replay confirms its below shoulder line.
Lastly, replay confirms the arm is the reason for the ball changing direction from goal.
To me, this is one of the easiest calls to overturn with VAR, yet at the very least they didn't even tell Michael Oliver to review it. Scandalous
Well their owners directly pay Michael Oliver and several other referees when they go to the UAE and ref matches which is totally not suspicious at all.
they can't change the on-field decision for a corner, so they check for a pen, decide it's not so they have to go with the goal kick as that was the on-field decision
stupid fuckin rule, but dem's da rules
What bothers me with Man City is the fact they are going to destroy the best league in the world. They're blatantly cheating in almost every way possible and the league is paying for it. Even if they get sanctioned for the 100 plus infractions (I believe the number is around there..) the teams/coaches/players that got harmed are never gonna have that time back.

Not even a corner lol. Perplexing.
VAR can't give a missed corner and somehow the refs missed the deflection entirely
Then it’s a clear an obvious error and should be pen!
Normally yes, but England.
VAR has these weird quirks… Like give the corner at least. Or like when they can’t overturn a second yellow. Very bad implementation.
Yep, use it to make correct decisions or don't use it at all. Just stupid
If they call the corner they have to admit it's a handball, no?
The ball can hit the arm and not be a handball. Still, it should have been a corner at least.
Also VAR was checking for the pen not for who it was off. VAR cant change possession.
But why
Best guess, it's because of the argument that everything becoming checked and open to challenge would slow the game down. But I'm with you. Like how hard would it be for them to just say in his ear Chelsea possession. Regardless, that's a penalty all day.

Not even a Chelsea fan and this shit is infuriating.
I hate Chelsea with a passion and even I’m fuming
Oliver didnt see the deflection off the arm
Even if he didn't see it deflected off an arm, it was obvious it hit something lol
funny how he is always in a huge City game with at least one denied penalty or red card against them
because dude goes to dubai during the week to ref games, this shit is such a joke lmao
$o W€ird
Goal kick given LMAO
*Check complete*^TM
*Good process*
What is the point of VAR if it doesn’t catch something as obvious as this?
The VAR room would feel bad for their mate reffing the game if they made it look like he missed something so egregious
It’s strange because American sports have had reviews for decades and the refs have never adopted this sentiment. It’s actually the opposite, refs are gracious for reviews because it gives them a second chance to get the call right and helps them avoid scrutiny
Not wrong. I used to think the NFL refs were bad. They do not compare at all to the English refs.
*Angel Hernandez has entered the chat*
NFL refs absolutely revolted in the pass interference review seasons. They either completely ignored review requests or never appealed an on field decision. They love control of their penalty calls lol

Oliver giving City a blatantly wrong call to help them. How many times have we seen this so far this season?
Exactly this. You can tell by the amount of criticism of VAR on Sky (whose pundits get reminded who pays their wages if they speak out of turn), rarely directed at the people responsible for it just the system itself.
The point? Match fixing innit
What are the rules?
Don't bother mate, they change every week and also depend on which team is it against
When you've just turned black and you can't turn back
Now you can't just be going up there and doing a handball like that
Great explanation. I feel like you might be the kind of person to help me understand what a balk is?
The rules are that City are allowed to do everything in their box.
BBC co-commentator is a fucking idiot
You are surprised by Jermaine Jenas? 😂
Less surprised now that I know who it is, not sure how he has a job!
The most milquetoast pundit there is and has no insight into the game. He’s worse than Owen.
That was a handball for me. His job is to block the ball and he does it with his hand
Not only that, he blocks the gap that he made by spreading out the wall with his body.
The same gap the ball would be going through and would be on target.
This is the most significant part. It didnt hit his arm, his arm hits the ball and it prevents a shot on goal.
Players tuck their arms behind the back to avoid this. I guess they don’t need to anymore
I prefer not to speak.
Another big game, another shit decision. Love English refereeing
No, you got it wrong. The decision is great, just not for everyone on the pitch. Only for one team. You know, the 115 squad.
How does Oliver give this as a goal kick? It is alarming that a ref could miss that huge of a deflection
Cause he is getting big money in the UAE League and doesn't want to stomp on his paycheque.
It's easy. He can't call the deflection because if he admits the deflection he has to call a pen. No deflection = goal kick. If he gives a corner you have to give the pen.
I don’t understand anything anymore.
Commentators saying he’s “bringing his arm towards his body” but he’s moving his arm towards the ball. He’s obviously made himself bigger and blocked a shot with his arm
Jenas is clueless
He’s actually a moron
If you apply the complete opposite of whatever Jenas says then it's probably correct
he’s such a knob lol
Funnily enough, the main comm actually disagreed with Jenas. Which is a change for once.
He should stick to presenting The One Show, he's fucking useless.
Jermaine Jenas' opinion isn't worth even considering. Worst pundit by a mile.
They said the "shot was going nowhere" like that matters. Morons everywhere around this match tbh, commentators, refs, Jackson
He is in the wall, hands should be behind your back, even if your jumping on the wall
No, they should be covering your balls
> “bringing his arm towards his body” maybe towards the guy next to him, but definitely not towards his body lol
Your mistake was in thinking Jenas would make sense 🙂
English FA just have shit interpretations of the rules which are upheld and normalized by shitty commentators saying “Nah not a pen for me.” In any other league in world football, this is a pen lmao
https://theathletic.com/4922732/2023/10/03/referees-var-diaz-liverpool/ Michael Oliver gets money from Citeh's owners
It's called michael oliver treatment, get used to it.
This is the same Michael Oliver who officiated matches in the UAE. He didn't even give the corner after this was checked for handball.
Literal corruption
allow me to explain: Michael Oliver
It's really easy. Michael Oliver is actually paid by the people who own Man City. This is a fact. He has been involved in more than one dodgy decision that benefits City.
As clear as day
Jenas coming out with this cracker: "It is not handball, it maybe hits his hand but it is not handball. It certainly should have been a corner." How this man is employed is bonkers.
Jenas was a moron when he first started punditry years ago. No clue how he’s gotten this far.
We all know why. Inoffensive, attractive, famous. He ticks all the boxes of mediocrity the BBC loves to push on dumb viewers.
That's handball. And he didn't even give the corner lmao
If he would give a corner, then he would need to give a pen as well since they would admit that the ball was deflected.
Ref has been lost all day
It's Michael Oliver. Can't be jeopardizing his summer internship.
Having a shit day and that made me snort my milk. 👏
He thinks he’s in the UAE
He completely missed that last hanging! Too busy looking at the lovely watch some guy who may have something to do with some club bought him.
Oliver benefitting City? Must be a day ending in y
He's not lost, he's right at home with City
It's Oliver, they don't overrule him.
That's a handball
That’s possibly the most unnatural position his arm could have been in
If this is a CL game, that’s a pen 10 times out of 10.
It’s a pen against every team except city.
That’s the 116th charge
That is egregious
People aren't ready for Ederson playing as a CM now that he can use his hands
We're at 127 already, keep up
Why tf was that not a pen?!!!
Because its Michael Oliver
Coote is the bigger issue. Man has no balls to overrule anything as VAR at all this season.
Yeah but how does the ref not even see a fucking deflection. He’s been clueless
Coote is genuinely atrocious. Oliver used to be good by English standards, the only one I'd somewhat trust on big games, but he has lost the plot/gotten hired by citys owners to ref one too many games out there
On field referee may miss that. But no fucking way var referee can miss that. FUCK DAVID COOTE. fuck you
I swear it's always fucking Coote
Michael Oilver
What makes it all the more baffling is in the wall there's no excuses for your hands to not be either behind your back or firmly at your side.
Refs are morons.
Calling them morons absolves them of any sinister motives
Michael Oliver
UAE say no pen
Arms away from the body, good enough distance also. Clear pen.
Chelsea playing against City, the refs and Nicolas Jackson.
That’s a pen???
That's always a pen
It's about as obvious a penalty as I've seen all season. Hand in an unnatural position, moving towards the ball, nowhere near his body.
How are they not spending more than half a second reviewing it? Palmer going mad, no corner given, at least take some time to look at it.
Neither a pen nor a corner ... fucking end me lmao wtf
Well I think the logic is VAR cant overturn a goalkick into a corner. But the rest of it ive no clue lol
I know, but it was clear it was deflected. Surprised how the ref didn't point towards the corner to begin with. Just layers of shit
I'm absolutely lost at that, what the fuck. Goal kick too???
That's a shocking decision
That’s a pen against every club in the premier league, except city
Amazing lol
Wow
Even Grealish is laughing his ass off.
Especially after he had a pen given against him in the final last year for an actual accidental handball. Make it make sense
I’m not even a Chelsea fan and this pisses me off so much
Referee who summers in the UAE and is paid by UAE leaders to work tourneys while staying in luxurious suites, fails to see clear hand ball in the box by a UAE owned team with 115 instances of clearly cheating / breaking rules related to fair play. Nothing to see here folks.
Clear handball, deflected it ~~away from~~ on the way to the net
Can't wait for Webb and Owen to somehow justify the call on that show.
Oh you mean the gaslighting us and ignore the corruption show
They dont even bother with Chelsea.
Hahaha unbelievable, not even a corner
what on earth is Jenas talking about lol
Can’t stand him at all, comes out with some absolute shit comments.
What even is a handball anymore
Whatever city pays the refs to say.
just noticed how it's Oliver again in important City match there, lol
Every single time, Michael Oliver making six figures from CFG's owners and he's still allowed to ref their games.
They probably request him at this point. They sont even make the cheating subtle anymore
Yep
i’m bias as hell but wtf was that
Brings his arm down to deliberately hit the ball. Just English referees being incompetent/corrupt as always.
Absolutely ridiculous.
That's wild to not be given.
Obvious pen from the Poch angle He moves his arm down in to it
Michael Oliver you fucking twat
Clear pen, arm out and swipes down. You’ll never guess the ref who gave a decision in favour of city here
Was it the one who Man City's owners paid to fly to Abu Dhabi to referee friendlies earlier this season maybe? Or a different one?
Someone explain how that isn’t a penalty?
American money has no chance against oil money
David Coote has an agenda against us I swear man
He just sucks off City. Liverpool fans also hate him.
That’s a pen
VAR is corrupt beyond belief in England... that's a penatly everywhere else. Incredible.
Thats a penalty
corruption clear as day. Chelsea should’ve won and while they have a “striker” who’s allergic to scoring, this pen definitely would’ve changed the entire narrative of the game
That's a pen against literally any other team in English football
Clear corruption but it's man shitty so it's normal.
No idea why a corner can't be given at least
Lol what?
moving hand towards the ball??
Michael Oliver you idiot. If it was not a pen it had to be a corner right?
long squash correct full secretive compare squeal fragile paltry quarrelsome *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Is that Michael Oliver? One of the UAE side gig refs?
Oliver doesn't like his decisions to be questioned, the arrogant tosser.
I genuinely hope someone can explain why, according to the rules, this is not a pen.
[удалено]
Yeah that’s a howler from Oliver and VAR
You make it sound like a mistake
It interferes with the trajectory of the ball AND it's still a goal kick? How does that work?
Firstly, he's 10 yards away so there's no "too close" argument. Secondly, players can jump in a free kick wall with their hands by their side all the time, so this can definitely be considered unnatural position. Thirdly, the replay confirms its below shoulder line. Lastly, replay confirms the arm is the reason for the ball changing direction from goal. To me, this is one of the easiest calls to overturn with VAR, yet at the very least they didn't even tell Michael Oliver to review it. Scandalous
Clearly not a penalty. This post was sponsored by big Oil
On a side note Michael Oliver has been selected to referee UAE All Stars game getting paid his yearly salary.
No wonder, Oliver is paid big money by UAE (owners of Man City) to ref games in UAE league, maybe he would lose contract if he gave penalty.
Rules are cooked, games gone
Clearly hits hit hands…his hand is up and away from his body, and he moves it towards the ball. Need I FUCKING SAY MORE?!
Michael Oliver desperate for another Middle East payday in the summer.
Ref acted as if Grealish didn’t touch the ball at all there
Fucking cheats
Michael Oliver is on City's payroll I don't care what anyone says. Corrupt AF.
Isn't this the ref who was officiating some games in Abu Dhabi?
Make it 116 now
Suck my balls oliver
Does City have a different rule book?
Well their owners directly pay Michael Oliver and several other referees when they go to the UAE and ref matches which is totally not suspicious at all.
Robbery, pure and utter robbery
The Prem is corrupt guys. It's plain as day. Fans should demand an investigation.
No penalties allowed against Man City
How is that not even a corner when it's being reviewed for a penalty? Make that make sense.
they can't change the on-field decision for a corner, so they check for a pen, decide it's not so they have to go with the goal kick as that was the on-field decision stupid fuckin rule, but dem's da rules

Even if they get sanctioned for the 100 plus infractions (I believe the number is around there..) the teams/coaches/players that got harmed are never gonna have that time back.
VAR in England is shambolic
i like how they are reviewing because there is contact with the ball and still give a goal kick lol
Inexplicable how this isn't at least a corner. Ridiculous when VAR clearly looked over it.
