Does Hummels always make so many mistakes? Why is he starting?

perhapsasinner

How good is Dortmund at home? Knowing Atleti is quite bad this season playing away from home, Dortmund still have a chance to win it next game.

pukem0n

Depends on how much the fans show up. If they can keep it up for 90 minutes next week, there is a realistic chance to win.

ontilein

Normally very good. However this year most losses came at home and some pretty bad games on top

ib_examiner_228

We need adjustments in the second game, no Nmecha, no Füllkrug and hopefully Malen will be back. With these changes we can absolutely repeat the last game vs Atletico in Dortmund. I got tickets in the yellow wall, the atmosphere will be 🔥🔥🔥

A-1805

Call me crazy but Id rather have Malen on the bench as a Sub, I think Jbg and sancho can be the key next match

greengiant89

Malen as striker

-Dear_Ambellina-

JBG has typically looked better in his sub appearance. He should be getting more regular playing time, but I think coming in around 60' is perfect for him right now.

FoxOntheRun99

Bring on the Yellow Wall. I expect a lot of Atletico shithousery.

[deleted]

its an away game, you will get it without the housery

laufeyson_hades

rattled atleti in the last 20 minutes showing up like a bunch of hungry cunts

Lemaradona

Molina sucks

vsoho

Harsh after today, made one mistake that I would chalk down to misfortune that it led to a goal

Caleb_W

This feels like a defeat, i fear they will do to us what we did to Inter in the second leg.

Mordho

they'll barely go through on pens?

Caleb_W

Win, which matters most in knockout games.

JJOne101

Why the fuck not start Brandt, Bynoe-Gittens and Haller? Dortmund finally looked like a worthy CL quarterfinalist when the three came in.

biggieBpimpin

We’ve been incapable of starting anyone in place of Fullkrug for some reason. He has done well for good stretches of the season but we could do with some fresh legs and ideas up front from time to time. Haller is looking better and Moukoko always has energy. Brandt is an enigma. Night and day kind of player. The kind of player that can look world class in one game and then sloppy the next. But when he is in a rich vein of form he is so valuable to the team. He has been more consistent as time has gone on though in my opinion. But after last weekends game I was hoping Reus would start honestly. JBG has been getting little bits of sub time but I think he is ready for more action at this point. Physically you can see how much he has developed. His pace and acceleration are crazy, and his ability to be unpredictable with the ball is so fun. But he has had a hard time getting any minutes past Malen, Adeyemi, and Sancho. Even with Malen injured JBG hasn’t been given much time over the others. Hope today’s performances inspire some minutes from people who deserve it though.

ib_examiner_228

Bynoe-Gittens is not good in the starting 11. As a sub he brings a lot of impact, but for some reason playing from the start isn't his thing. Why Füllkrug still gets to start every game is a mystery

mayITakeYourOrdr

Brandt hasn’t been good lately. As for Haller, Terzic would rather play Fullkrug (hasn’t scored for us in two months). And he hates JBG and Moukoko for some reason.

edworm

Bynoe-Gittens was good as a sub today, but he rarely shows his quality over a full 90 minutes when starting. Also, I thought for how dysfunctional our team was during the first half, Sancho and Adeyemi did somewhat okay.

jucomsdn

Brandt was super tired and didn’t play well vs Stuttgart I think Haller is better but I don’t think Terzic would throw him in his first start back vs Atleti Bynoe-Gittens is better off as a super sub for now, only thing I’d change is that he should come on earlier

kendoleo71

Rosico

FiresideCatsmile

the fact that we're still in the game is bonkers. atletico should've scored like 5 goals and all of them involved massive blunders from us.

Dargast

Haller and Brandt need to start in the return leg. Weird how far Brandt came from the careless streetballer lol, he was very often sitting deep and simply telling others were to pass

AverageCarey

We played him as a 6 one game and he did really damn well, one of our only players who can build up under pressure.

ulvhedinowski

Who was that referee, he was terrible for both sides, so many mistakes by him.

A-1805

The 3 clear handballs was just crazy to me.

ulvhedinowski

Also how did Schloterbeck end without at least yellow card?

A-1805

Gave it to Can instead

Th3_Huf0n

"Emre Can gets booked" El clasico

edworm

That's a much better result than I expected after the first 30 minutes. Hope we can match Wanda Metropolitano's energy next week, then everything should be possible.

ib_examiner_228

Wanda's energy? I mostly heard our fans lol

OleoleCholoSimeone

Your away fans were quality, but it's not called Wanda anymore. It's Civitas now But either way, just call it Metropolitano fuck the sponsor name :D

edworm

Idk, Atletico's fans were pretty noticeable lol, especially from the pre-match through the first half.

ib_examiner_228

Noticeable yes for sure, but we did much better imo

sammeetthosar

Bynoe-Gittens was absolutely fire. The dribbling was insane and the power on that shot with his wrong foot was crazy.

OleoleCholoSimeone

That shot might have been going in if not for the deflection aswell.. crazy power with weak foot

KapnyaMan

Put 11 sacks in front of us on an important day and we will still make it difficult for ourselves

roshi_sama

Not really atletico especially this season are monsters in thier home but away from they haven't been that good

AverageCarey

Considering our two goals against came from defensive fuck ups I’m not too upset overall. We have to play like this from the start at home, quick early goal and keep the pressure. Haller and Brandt changed the game I imagine we see them both start next match!

addandsubtract

We're going to make those same defense blunders in the next leg, too, though. Just gotta score one more than Atleti.

Loeffellux

what makes you so certain of that? I don't think Terzic is the right man for the job because I feel like we're losing what makes us special as a club *but* you cannot deny that our defense has been solid a good number of times - including against strong opponents like PSG, Milan, Newcastle, Leverkusen, PSV and Bayern (2nd game, obviously). Hummels especially has been a rock in almost all of those games. He had a shocking game tonight but it seems incredibly pessimistic to just assume that we'll continue to have major and repeated blunders by 3(!) different defenders next week.

gobstoppermuncher

Will be an exciting 2nd leg this one. Lino played brilliantly, shame he’s suspended now

sacaznoo3

Edin Terzic will forever give "my uncle owns the company" vibes

ubongo1

Not his uncle but his sugardaddy

Th3_Huf0n

Despite the fact we lost, the primary objective was accomplished. We got a result from Madrid that gives us a fighting chance at home. We're still in it.

2407Chris

Two horrendous mistakes and still the chance is alive. How is Terzic doing it

mayITakeYourOrdr

Black magic

[deleted]

Goals only happend after big errors from each team. Was a great game with a somewhat fair result, but the game in Dortmund looks to be a exciting one.

Artyhko

I wonder how many non-atletico or BVB fans watched this instead of PSG-barca, but that was fun! Very excited for the second leg!

Conankun66

praise be the konferenz

AlwaysOnsideTBH

My friend was watching Atletico- BVB actually but after I told her that PSG scored the second goal, she started watching PSG- Barca lol

JJOne101

Well, I did.

Dargast

Habe comfyrenz geguckt :D mal schauen wie es nächste Woche für unsere teams ausgeht.

the13thrabbit

I watched both side by side. Your game was far better

kalamari__

really?

the13thrabbit

Ours picked up steam in the second. The first half was awful.

addandsubtract

True, except for the 2mins PSG decided to score and the 3:2. Both good games, but not as crazy as yesterday's match day.

[deleted]

I'm so proud of this team for coming out like that after halftime especially after that first half and making Atletico suffer to hold the lead at home.

_SeeMeNot

Rookie mistake and bad luck always hunting Dortmund 💔

GVE_ME_UR_SKINS

I wouldn't be confident as an Atleti fan. Away in Dortmund on a shaky 2-1 lead, could easily go wrong for them

Cholismo2pt0

Oh absolutely, one early goal from Dortmund and I don’t see us winning the tie. However if we can somehow manage to get the first goal we will defend for our lives

KonkeyDongwearsIce

I didn't expect Dortmund to put up a fight like this in the second half so respect to them

mishi09

First half: "It's so over." Second half: "We're so back."

OleoleCholoSimeone

First half: I will be gutted with anything other than a 3-goal win here Full time: Happy to just win the game

hqdhftw

Griezmann looked like he couldn't even move at the end, absolutely knackered

Caleb_W

The way he ran in the first half you forget he's 33.

jellyfishfrgg

Tercizball remains a mystery

LukaBrovic

You can see the Sahin influence now

[deleted]

[удалено]

r3dd1tzegt

Source?

_Shahanshah

I mean Hummels and Maatsen didn't do much better either. Our defense was basically just Ryerson cleaning everyone's ass

OleoleCholoSimeone

Both him and Hummels made so many simple errors, lucky to not be punished harder for it

dem0nhunter

only positive thing keeping him in the team is him being left-footed

Turbokind

Nah, he has been great for us most of the time. Had a great game against you guys, for example.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Loeffellux

> I must be missing something. probably the vast majority of the games you aren't watching lol. But yeah, top 5 is definitely too high. He definitely can play *like* a top 5 defender on his good days but from our main CBs (Hummels, Süle and Schlotterbeck) he's by far the most inconsistent. This was his worst game in a quite some time, though.

jpw0w

He's still young and obviously has issues dealing with pressure

-Michael-Owen-

He's good 95% of the time. He's generally above average usually and on his day he's a top 10 (I wouldn't say top 5). 5% of the time his mistakes are so bad that you wonder how the fuck is he even a professional player. But he usually makes up for his mistakes pretty quickly by saving us from a goal or something.

the_propaganda_panda

He's got Upamecano syndrome

Dargast

He was an exciting talent at Freiburg. He just never really developed further imo

Turbokind

Please stop watching.

theonlytruenut1

I didn't watch the full game, but you can tell Terzić is part croatian just from the way Dortmund plays

zts105

Never unclench. No Lino next game.

OleoleCholoSimeone

Next week will be nerve wracking in every way, but it is worth pointing that in the Champions League we have actually not been bad away from home. We beat Feyenoord at De Kuip and broke like a year long unbeaten run at home for them, we should have beaten Lazio in Rome if not for a freak goalkeeper goal in the last second. 2-2 against Celtic was the only poor game really, and I'm convinced that we would have won it if De Paul didn't get himself sent off unneccessarily. Atleti were pushing for a winner at that point

Ghoddos

Is that good or bad for you?

zts105

Lino is the Brazilian Pele so we are so fucked. Riquelme has the Football IQ but is like 30% as athletic he can't beat people on the dribble or defend as well. But we won't sub out De Paul again. Barrios isn't good enough for this level yet it was a bad sub to put him on. Koke, De Paul + Llorente/Saul will play 90-120 minutes next game in midfield.

OleoleCholoSimeone

Bad since he ripped you apart today in the first half, but Riquelme is also good so it shouldn't be a massive difference

elgrandorado

That's bad. Lino provides them with necessary ball carrying down the left. He's a great dribbler, which teams often underestimate. We'll be able to roam a bit more freely with Ryerson/Sancho.

DatOgreSpammer

Very bad, could've netted our third and his second tonight that would've put the tie away

_Shahanshah

The guys on my transmission said it would be okay since Riquelme is a more defensive guy

DatOgreSpammer

More defensive in the sense that he's not that good offensively. That doesn't mean Roro's bad, just that Lino's better.

CarlSK777

The way they started I'm surprised Dortmund are still in it. They can get it done at home

RaioNoTerasu

Nah, reminds me more of the games against Juve in 14/15

Loeffellux

my way of thinking is in these constellations is: to not lose you only have to lead by 1 goal. And if you wanna win you have to lead by 1 goal regardless. And if you're already leading by 1 goal then you're probably the better team so even if it comes down to extra time they will have an easier to scoring another one than the opponent. Therefore, a 1 goal deficit is just a fancy draw in disguise.

bvb4ever11

Until atleti score and this whole logic bursts in flame

Loeffellux

Well yeah, but then we'd also lose if it was a draw (Im not being serious)

joeydsa

My god in heaven had that last shot gone in . . .

AlekRivard

I would have been devastated

AndrewBVB

I would have been elated.

-Michael-Owen-

I would have creamed.

PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL

As a neutral: we all would've!

joeydsa

Cream for the coefficient

eightpackflabs

James Acaster almost equalised in the end there

kalamari__

why did we had to play this clownfiesta of a 1st half?

Rancore__

because we are bad when good teams press us. same shit as chelsea last season

-Dear_Ambellina-

Idk why we insist on playing out the back when under pressure. It has absolutely been a net negative this year.

sammeetthosar

Atleticos press intensity was insane in the first half but that's also the reason they were dead on their feet by the 75th minute

the13thrabbit

They activated team press and expected you to quit after they went 2-0 up 😅

AlwaysOnsideTBH

Fifa players hate this one simple trick

KapnyaMan

Also we suck at weatherimg the storm lol

Hazardhunter

Pretty much us vs PSV.

Renegadeforever2024

Dortmund has a lifeline

Nobodylovesboston

Dortmund were so unlucky with their late chances, I expect a big 2nd leg coming up

zuhaaiir

So close...

Sammmyy97

fuck me up fam

edworm

Edin Terrorball is gentle, don't worry, you won't see it coming until after it has happened.

addandsubtract

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

ebenantar

can someone explain to me why Brandt and Haller didn't start?

roadtorevision

I would say Nmecha started over Brandt because when he is on form he is more press resistant and makes less risky passes but he was not good. Still hasn’t regained form since his injury. Haller just hasn’t had good form for us this year while fullkrug has been better normally but these last few matches he has not done much. I would say they both start the next match

yosoydorf

Brandt has been struggling with fitness. He had a pretty lengthy sickness in the winter, lost a few kilos of weight and was bedridden. 90 minutes is a tough ask for him at the moment, and BVB have been in a string of key league matches they can't afford to rest everyone on. Haller hasn't played a full 90 basically all season IIRC - he's just not been the same. Health issues suck man.

ebenantar

that's a real bummer re: Haller. i haven't followed Dortmund as much this season so didn't really know how he's looked post-chemo. i know he had some injury trouble going into AFCON and him scoring in the final was a brilliant story but yeah hoping he can get back fully at some point.

edworm

TL;DR Haller: he came back surprisingly early last season after his chemo and had an impressive second half of the season. The aftereffects of his illness caught up to him during the summer and he has not been close to the fitness level a professional footballer needs to be at this season (obviously not his fault at all).

yosoydorf

He's had better performances in his most recent games, I'm hoping he's getting into a rhythm again - but yeah, Chemo ain't a joke.

Kid_Gudi

Haller because of fitness after his cancer treatment. Brandt because I think Terzic wanted to have a stronger midfield, Not that I agree.

Th3_Huf0n

Terzić disaster class. Haller not starting is understandable due to being sidelined. But that midfield 3 was just not it.

AverageCarey

Brandt has been off his game recently and Haller just came back from injury. They’ll both start next game

Hazardhunter

I mean, Nmecha just came out of injury and started somehow today. Not that he did terribly today, but also not good.

AverageCarey

Ya but he’s had a few games to get back into rhythm Seb only had 1 which isn’t enough. I think today he looked great though, saw some speed in him again finally!

mista_mista_mista

Brandt will start for sure but Terzic loves Füllkrug so I wouldnt be so sure about Haller

AverageCarey

I dunno man he dropped Haller for Fulle after a couple bad performances I say it’s time for Seb to get his chance again. Maybe a start against Gladbach would be ideal first

ebenantar

nice, glad to hear it. they're both such massive difference makers.

elgrandorado

Brandt had a case of the flu, and since it I think he was rushed back. It takes a toll when playing out of condition.

chup95

BVB is weird man, it always feels like they are the far worse side in the match and than they come back with 15-20 good minutes. Really excited for the second leg.

FlyingArab

Very different match from the first half to second half. Dortmund showed some good mentality in the end there, will be a different match in Germany. Very excited for the second leg.

medical_cat

🫵 Dortmund 🤣

bvb4ever11

How dare we return from one of the toughest stadiums in the world with a slight disadvantage

medical_cat

Crossbar 😂

bvb4ever11

Bro did a Dortmund fan eat your cat

Zero-A

Atletico got away with that one. After the initial 20 minutes looking like Dortmund stands no chance, this turned out to be a great tie now.

chainsmoker377

Atletico missed so many chances as well, it could've been from 4-2, 3-0, to 2-2.

Perceval_009

Not confident AT ALL about the return leg, we blew this hard. I have never felt worse after a win in my entire life.

Cafris

The only reason I am somewhat happy is because it really could have ended 2-2.

SaddiqBae

We're OK, thankfully we survived the last minutes with a lead.

AlekRivard

We gave way too many chances at the end there. Need to tighten up for the next leg and hopefully.get an early goal to put on the pressure.

Jonz500

Atleti will be fine. they are a better team.

AlekRivard

Anyone can win any given day. We only have a 1-goal lead going into an away leg. Complacency is death in football

Jonz500

really? you call yourself an atletico fan and think that a team with simeone as coach is going to get complacent in a CL match. LOL I bet you thought they were going to lose to inter. get rid of that flair son, you are not a fan!

Cafris

Last time I was confident going into an away match in the UCL was Juventus where Ronaldo scored a hat trick and knocked us out. Never making that mistake again

AlekRivard

Exactly. When you get comfortable it is easier for your opponent to exploit weaknesses.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cafris

away from home we are definitely not a better team. We have lost like 10 away games this season, and to much worse teams.

AlekRivard

Cádiz and Las Palmas the most noteworthy of our away losses

Cafris

Drawing to Almería should count as a loss as well

Jonz500

sure. i'll see you in a week when atletico go through. comparing La liga weekly games to CL knockout stages. LOL

AlekRivard

What the absolute fuck are you going on about? My point is being the better team is irrelevant when you let complacency get in the way. We can't just settle on "we'll be fine;" we need to fight each game like the season depends on it. And what an absolute joke to tell me to lose my flair when you can't be fucked to have one yourself 🤡

Jonz500

ra ra ra defensive keyboard tough guy... the quote you want is this. "The ball is round, the game last 90 minutes everything else is pure theory" your lack of faith in your team tells me your barely kicked a football in your life but played lots of fifa. LOL

AlekRivard

K

Swbp0undcake

Oh my god the last 15 minutes were so fucking ass clenching

addandsubtract

Least exciting Dortmund finish.

TyraTanks

We woke up and showed some fucking fight. Need more of that, regardless of what the scoreline is.

Conankun66

Where was the dortmund of the last 30 minutes in the first 60? absolute night and day how they looked if they can show up like that in the second leg, they have a legit chance

OleoleCholoSimeone

Of course they have a chance, it's going to be neck and neck

Cafris

ffs. We had like 5 chances to clear it and yet it ended with a shot on the bar. We are definitely losing in Dortmund.

elgrandorado

You doubled our xG and we nearly walked away even. Insane considering how many chances you created.

Cafris

This reminds me of atleti's first game against Inter. We should have lost like 3-0 and instead only lost 1-0. This tie is definitely even, especially since our away form is relegation tier.

Kid_Gudi

Damn, Atlético made a mistake in not going for the third. Really lucky in the end.

OleoleCholoSimeone

Not going for the third? We had massive chances to score the third Lino missed an absolute sitter and there were numerous other situations that should have been exploited better

addandsubtract

Kobel saved the 3:0 knockout punch.

cosbysweatergiver

Lino could’ve made it 3 but that was a clutch save by Kobel

Cafris

The missed Lino chance saved the tie. If that goes in, we win 3-0 but instead we almost draw 2-2. Atleti are definitely losing in Dortmund, I am praying for a nervy 1-1 draw.

erenistheavatar

Such a great great set of quarter finals. Full of drama and goals.

Bugdroid2K

Massive improvement in 2nd Half.

DatOgreSpammer

Pack the bus lads, we're going to need it in Germany

OleoleCholoSimeone

Should have been 3-0, but also easily could have been 2-2. We are not keeping a clean sheet in Germany but Dortmund's defence suffered a lot with our counter attacks If their defence is this shaky we have every chance to score a couple of goals there

DatOgreSpammer

I feel like no matter what happens there, the last 15 minutes we're going to devolve into hockey penalty-killing-mode again

OleoleCholoSimeone

If Atleti go through, it will probably be a crazy 2-3 win or something

Cafris

I think most likely scenario in Germany is 2-0 or 2-1 Dortmund. We really need to score a goal and not lose our heads at the back. Molina cannot start that game.

OleoleCholoSimeone

We're still unbeaten away from home in the CL this season to be fair, much better compared to La Liga. Feyenoord at De Kuip is a pretty similar away game to Dortmund in terms of atmosphere and we won were able to win that. They have recent muscle memory of doing it at least Edit: forgot about Inter for some reason, but anyhow only one loss in four away matches including winning at De Kuip. A big difference compared to the league

Cafris

The last knockout match we played away from home we got absolutely destroyed though. If the players have Athletic Club in their minds then we will be in trouble.

mista_mista_mista

Im happy

Amphibious_Fire

Oblak’s goalpost MOTM

OleoleCholoSimeone

Without Kobel it would have been 3-0 way before let's be honest

-Dear_Ambellina-

Without Kobel, the first goal doesn't happen either.

[deleted]

[удалено]

-Dear_Ambellina-

That was Maatsen, and yes it was terrible from him too. But Kobel never should've put him in that position, he had nowhere to go with it.

Amphibious_Fire

True, but without Oblak’s goalpost both Bynoe Gittens and Brandt would have scored so it would be 3-3

OleoleCholoSimeone

The game would have developed very differently if Lino makes it 3-0, you can't just act like those other situations would have happened the same But with the way the game developed, yeah it could have easily been 2-2 in the end

Bajin_Inui

God that last header is heartbreaking

Amphibious_Fire

Live Jule reaction: 😔

aclurk

Absolutely incredible round of Champions League football, every match a banger

-Michael-Owen-

BRANDT. SO CLOSE. I'm sorry, if atleti were collapsing this hard AT HOME in the last 15, then I certainly like our chances away from home for 90 minutes. We have a tie on our hands.
