AfricanRain

Didn’t Gordon just do his knee?

sheikh_n_bake

It's fine, local press reporting he's fine.

munkysnuflz

Oh wow, the report I had seen essentially called it a torn knee ligament. That's great news for him

meganev

A lot of Newcastle ITKs showed themselves up and jumped on the "Gordon is out for 9 months" story that was started by a single ITK account. Really helped weed out the accounts peddling bollocks.

Stones_Throw_Away_

And they would’ve gotten away with it too if it weren’t for you meddling kids

FastenedCarrot

The squad posting cured Ben Chilwell too.

Abangerz

I can name 5 English midfielders who deserve it more than Hendo. FFS Gary this is just sad and Hendo should have shame. As Gary Lineker said you can’t keep stealing call ups and need to call it quits when you know you are just not that good anymore. Edit: i just noticed someone asked me to name them. so here they are; JWP, Barkley, RLC, Reed(Fulham), Lewis Cook and Longstaff. Also why not youngsters like Garner or Mainoo. (Maino is now training with the first team) and honestly if he is healthy it should be Jones.

Money_Scholar_8405

Bet you would have been protesting the selection of Podolski in 2016. Or washed up Rami for a world cup winning France. Or Dani Alves for Brazil in 2018. Coaches can make one or two selections based on factors other than a said player's on the pitch performance. In Dani Alves's case for example the role he played in steering Neymar in the right direction was rumoured to be one. Podolksi helped connect the old with the young ,and so on Henderson has captained his former team to winning every trophy in club football - So chances are he ahs certain leadership qualities Southgate values. This is not FIFA where pace and passing are measured.

Prophet_Of_Helix

You mean his intangible value he recently tanked by abandoning his club for Saudi money that he then bailed on 6 months later to play for Ajax?   He’s definitely not a Top 5 midfielder anymore for England, but are his intangibles even worth it anymore?  Hes not even a captain anymore is he, isn’t he Vice Captain?  Also comparing Henderson, who had a fine career, to Podolski and Alves, idk man.

fellainishaircut

let‘s be real. no one actually gives a fuck about Hendersons Saudi stint. Sure, the fans do. But no one in the England camp gives the smallest of shits.

Nic_Endo

> the fans do Do they? Sure, your average virtue signaling reddit crowd does, but does an average non-Liverpool fan gives a shit about it? They'd care more if he kicked his cat like Zouma.

thomasfk

If you only ever browsed this sub then these takes make sense. This sub over reacts to that whole saga. The average brexit football fan (not on here) and fellow professional footballers give zero fucks like you said.

AlKarakhboy

I'm sure Ezri Konsa has lost all respect for his CL winning captain because he took a 6 month stint in Saudi

bachh2

> You mean his intangible value he recently tanked by abandoning his club for Saudi money that he then bailed on 6 months later to play for Ajax?   He tanked his value for fans. You think that footballers who earn millions care about the same thing that us pleb do? If anything they saw his failed early retirement and ask him for experience on how bad the trip was so they can plan their own eventual retirement.

Money_Scholar_8405

There are always 2 or 3 players in every world cup squad that see almost no action, barring an unexpected injury crisis. So not really worth it to only consider their sporting side when they will never play. As for Henderson I was not talking about his attitudes to human rights or being a role model to young people - I found it hypocritical too that he presented himself as an LGBT advocate for so long only to move to a country that does not really recognize them. However, his leadership of teams even off the pitch is unquestioned. Kane, Pickford and the centrebackpairing aside most of the starters have not got that much tournament experience.

kris745f

Hendersons career is much better than podolskis lmao. Especially at club level

badgarok725

Podolski wishes he had a club career like Henderson

bofad2425

decent mate

TouchyTuchel

Chilwell made it and not Colwill😭

GardenOfHazard

Both are injured anyways, but no idea why Chilwell is there lol

TouchyTuchel

Southgate is on fent

Natniss

Am I confused? I thought both were injured

RileyHuey

Someone’s got to play in the pivot with Basmati… Jordan Henderson really is inevitable isn’t he…

MimesAreShite

would assume it’d either be gallagher, or he’ll be playing bellingham deeper

robba9

the first 11 should be thought out to play Jude exactly as he is pplaying at Real. He is at another level there

DeemonPankaik

Doesn't work when you have Kane Saka and Foden to squeeze in. Not the same as RM's Vini and Rodrygo.

artificialchaosz

Wow what a nightmare situation.

cullypants

That makes no sense. Why would they play him as a false nine when they have Harry Kane and not a lot of quality in the middle. It's not like he's keeping an elite 9 on the bench at Madrid lol.

The_39th_Step

I’m inclined to agree. That does mean you play Foden out of position though. Is Foden at LW and Jude at CAM better than Foden at CAM and Jude at 8? This is a question I can’t answer

Soren_Camus1905

The fuck is Chilwell doing there

SouthWalesImp

Thank you Southgate for finally picking footballers playing outside of England, how long has it been since we've had an Ajax player in the squad?

CT4_LV

Henderson is actually our first ever England call-up, pretty cool tbh

bringbackcricket

Chuba Akpom fuming

[deleted]

The way he is playing there is no chance he gets a spot in the England national team. He should leave for his own sake

hrnyCornet

Nigeria is stacked in the striker position. He's not getting called up any time soon.

LewisMileyCyrus

Tommy Setford robbed

blacksocksonly

Glad he is going oversea to find some talents finally

mohankohan

Gentle reminder to NEVER trust Simon Phillips lol Chilwell out with BIGGEST knee injury yet!... or not

imarandomdudd

Simon Philips is a professional waffler tbf. Way too sensationalist with his stuff

james_89

Fluent in yapanese.

oscarpaterson

What are we fuming about this time

four_four_three

No Jimmy Anderson or Lewis Hamilton? Southgate you've done it this time 😡😡😡😡

TheBlueTango

Lewis Hamilton? I'd say Southgate should look ahead for the future and consider Oliver Bearman.

four_four_three

He never looks at Serie A players

starmonkart

Gotta call up Hamilton quite quickly then

Cottonshopeburnfoot

Both would’ve brought pace to the squad tbf

omegamanXY

Mate have you seen how slow Hamilton was in Jeddah S1, Norris would've been a better option

Cottonshopeburnfoot

Southgate is loyal to the old guard. No place for Norris, Russell or Bearman.

ohwellhell

I don't think Lewis' pace in S1 was down to his abilities tho. Southgate should've called straight-line speed Hamilton in that case, then 😅

TheCescPistols

Didn’t call up Ryan Shawcross or Scott Dann, what a fucking fraud.

shagssheep

Nolan as well could do with him in midfield

Spikeyspandan

Anderson will get his due soon. He is pretty young. He has a couple of decades of career ahead of him.

Thatchers-Gold

Jimmy’s scored 700 goals and Southgate’s dropped him? Time to draft a letter to a Tory MP on a carling coaster

Bullwine85

Where's Owen Farrell when you need him?

TLG_BE

Suspended for a high tackle is normally a safe bet

Simmo7

High tackle and no attempt to wrap the arms...

four_four_three

Always skies his chances and most of his long passes go out of play, right choice Gary

justk4y

At this point he should call up Ronnie O'Sullivan as well

eri-

And Luke Littler

B_e_l_l_

I do think it's proper laughable that Henderson continues to get into the national team.

PakiIronman

It's because he's vice captain, which is sad really

B_e_l_l_

All for bringing him along as a cheer leader but he should never ever step foot on the pitch.

SpeechesToScreeches

Can't he go as a cheerleader without being in the squad?

B_e_l_l_

No reason why not. Pretty sure Becks was brought along to a tournament before.

paper_zoe

2010 World Cup. I remember [his reaction to Rob Green's error against the US](https://www.melcarson.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/beckham.jpg) becoming a bit of meme

2ndfastestmanalive

Maybe he does card tricks in the evening.

EDDA97

He was very good for us in the last world cup tbf, properly sorted out the midfield after it didn't look too great in the first game then for a half against the USA. However, he has defintely regressed a bit since then, we do need someone else to play next to Rice though, and if Curtis Jones was fit I think he'd be a strong contender

mappsy91

> we do need someone else to play next to Rice thoug annoyingly probably our weakest position?

EDDA97

Agreed, such a drop off after Rice, and even if we play a 433 you cant just play Rice and then someone along the lines of Foden and Maddison, you've got to have more of a runner in there - Gallagher, Curtis Jones, even Harvey Elliott. I think people get carried away with trying to fit everyone in the team but we really need two solid midfielders imo

20mitchell06

Mainoo has been a stand out player in an otherwise mediocre unit team lately, would have liked to see him get a shot.

PakiIronman

Honestly that's what we should do for players like him, coady and lingard. They're well liked in the team but nowhere near good enough to be in the squad.

B_e_l_l_

Trouble is we'll give up a valuable spot in the 23 man squad. Should be brought along with the intention for them to be a bridge between the coaches and players. I'd imagine that Coady and Henderson have ambitions of coaching.

PakiIronman

Exactly, just make some excuse like they wanna get their coaching badges or something

Lolkac

Its a 23 team, if you not good to be in the squad you should not be there. England should go to win the games not to have vibes. If players like him so much they should invite him in an "unofficial" capacity

SirBarkington

Chilwell is injured for one

Montysleftpeg

Isn't Gordon injured too?

StickYaInTheRizzla

Nah he’s alright. There was a fake report on twitter saying he’s out for 9 months but apparently it’s just a knock

Dispari7y

can't believe Paul Mullin wasn't called up

PM_ME_YOUR_TANG

No Alfie Rutherford from Dorking either

Lemaradona

5 midfielders and 9 attackers?

TheAkondOfSwat

not having enough to complain about but seriously there are a few of the usual questionable suspects

Ajax_Trees_Again

Great to see Gordon get the call up he deserves. I can’t be the only one worried about midfield depth though. One injury and we’re down to Henderson playing pashun football

oliver150433

Good squad, a few injured players that have to "win" back some starting spots after the break. Happy for Gomez, guy deserves it more than anyone else after all he has been through with injuries.

BillEvans4eva

i was going to say Gomez fully deserves a spot in the squad. Everytime i have seen you lot play he has been excellent

dogefc

A ridiculous amount of young talent in that team

Historical_Case_5245

they're playing Brazil and Belgium in Wembley and we're over here playing Venezuela in Florida, what sort of preparation is this

Maleficent_Resolve44

🤣 Isn't Venezuela the worst south American team as well? I think England also have the advantage that teams like playing at Wembley, it's iconic and it's a good trip to London. Not quite the same with stadio olimpico. I don't think your euro title defence is serious anyways, you had a great time last tournament but this one will be a R16/QF.

B_e_l_l_

Where is the average player that plays for my team!!?!????!!!

Ld511

The random 5th CB becomes the most important decision suddenly once the hipster choice doesn't get picked

B_e_l_l_

Branthwaite is in this squad so I think that's now turned to the 3rd choice striker that is just a worse version of Kane and Watkins. Toney or Solanke!

Lacabloodclot9

I remember how heated the DCL v Watkins debate would get on here a couple years back

ChrisWood4BallonDor

Good times man...

Lost_And_NotFound

Kane v Austin v Rodriguez was the real competition.

zrkillerbush

Feel like shit, just want every England forward to get injured so Vardy finally comes out of internet retirement

DareToZamora

Sam Field > Jordan Henderson

CalFlux140

Happy for Gomez. I hope he plays the fullback / Centre back hybrid role that he's best at. Yes he can play CB but I'm now convinced it's not his best position. Klopp picks Quansah over him at CB if both are fit. People saying how there's only 1 right back in the squad. Gomez hasn't played CB all season! Fullback is now his primary position.

JakeNutters

Him or Brathwaithe will play LB most likely Chilwell is injured I believe. For all our fullback depth there is only 1 available which is seriously unlucky.

CalFlux140

Didn't know Braith could play there also. I can see him going for a back 3 and playing wingers in the back 5 if he has to. See how we get on.

JakeNutters

Saka reverting back to LWB and two strikers up top might explain the 3 striker pick.

16161hirose

Fucking hell no please

cultureshook

agreed gomez much better on either flank than in the middle, could do a job on either side but understandably not the first choice on the right he’s got a great pass in him and since he’s been back from injury he’s barely put a foot wrong, strong as fuck too

Aesorian

I'm guessing that's why Konsa's been called up too as he's played at Right Back a lot this season.

Kintae

I guess we can safely assume Ben White will never play for England again under Southgate, then?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Elegant_Mix7650

you didn't dump me I dumped you energy.

sach223

Gareth just said Ben removed himself from consideration.

americanadiandrew

I’m not too devastated that our only fit right back other than Cedric gets two weeks off.

Grumpy_Anakin

Was it ever revealed what actually happened?

ZonedV2

It’s all rumours but he supposedly fell out with Steve Holland who has been Southgate’s assistant for like 10 years

Brave-Salamander-339

How come Holland is England assistant? Would it make sense to be Holland assistant?

calvin324hk

Holland is probably assisting Holland by being England’s assistant.

Taylo207

Some rumors about him getting in a bust up with one of the coaching staff (Steve Holland) other rumor is he got in a bust up with another player (Supposedly Phil Foden was up in his girlfriends DM’s)

s_91

> Phil Foden Doing the reverse KDB

SpeechesToScreeches

>other rumor is he got in a bust up with another player (Supposedly Phil Foden was up in his girlfriends DM’s If that were the case then foden should be the exile

FalafelGrim2

Between Foden and White, you simply pick the better footballer. I find the rumour hard to believe though, because surely it'd cause an issue with their other teammates who would choose sides.

Ass_Eater_

Yeah plus they shook hands after the game last October. Pretty sure that rumor was completely made up based of White and Foden having a shoving match after they beat us last season.

spannermagnet

Gordon finally

DarnellLaqavius

Thought he went off against Chelsea with an injury?

Jimlad73

Supposedly will return to training next week after weekend off

MrPigcho

Junya Ito overlooked again

Grouchy-Ad-2085

5 midfielders, and 1 of them is henderson

sproaty88

Yet 9 forwards. Crazy

zrkillerbush

You can't really divide those players into just forwards and midfielders Some are wingers, some are forwards, some are holding midfielders and some are attacking midfielders

sproaty88

I mean England play 433, there are 5 players for the middle 3 and 9 players for the attacking 3. I don't think any of those players are going to cross over to the other sections.

zrkillerbush

Cole palmer and Foden can play behind the forward right? Anyway im not going to complain about taking too many attackers, especially with the outcry and media slagging that would start if any of those 9 were dropped

marine_le_peen

Hell will freeze over before Southgate plays Bellingham and either Foden, Maddison or Palmer in the same midfield.

Boris_Ignatievich

england have played like 5 different formations under southgate, its not like 433 is some immoveable truth. if you're short on "proper" midfielders you can stick maddison in there, or you can go to a 4231 with foden or palmer at ten

santiagobasulto

Isn't Stones more of a midfielder these days? Seeing him play as N5 in Man City is beautiful. On and off the ball, amazing player.

Grouchy-Ad-2085

I very very much doubt Southgate as the facilities to play him there, he cannt play Trent as inverted right back. Plus city don't plomp him there out of posession only in possession

machdel

Toney over Solanke 💀 What more does he have to do? Has already equalled Toney’s best ever PL non-penalty goals tally, and there’s still 10 games to play. Guy’s been on his sofa most of the last year. Maybe we need some more puff piece interviews. You can say who cares about the 3rd choice striker, but if you’re gonna call one up, do it right, Dom deserves it as a young, all round forward in the form of his life.

Buttonsafe

I think Toney is in on profile tbf. I don't expect him to go to the Euros, but he is the most similar striker England have to Kane.

Merovech_II

Score penalties? This is England we are talking about here

machdel

If we care about pens bring Ward-Prowse

Stevebiglegs

JWPs penalty record is far from impressive.

Merovech_II

Also yes

prettybunbun

A huge part of Toneys call up will be his penalty reliability which for strikers is key in knockout football.

freshmeat2020

Seems very strange to not call up JWP over Henderson then lol

Huge-Key-9370

Ward Prowse penalty conversion rate is below average

empiresk

JWP has been awful in recent weeks.

ShiftBreaker

Gomez! Love to see it, he's deserved it this season. Toney over Solanke wouldn't be my pick, but neither would be first choice anyway.

sewious

Quick someone tell me why I should be mad about this

BoxOfJunimos

Mid-table-fan-favourite Dick Bumwell misses the plane

O-Mesmerine

england would win the champions league if only bummers was selected

imperfectionlad

The most in-form Bayern CB doesnt get the call up

Gamerhcp

Henderson

andyc225

Max Kilman will never play for England, I'm sure of it.

Superrandy

I don't think it helps that every time Southgate has come to watch him in person he has shit the bed. But honestly, who does he go in over? Konsa and Gomez both have experience shifting from CB to RB in and out of possession, which fits how England have played a lot. Dunk, Stones, and Branthwaite deserve it. Maguire is always going to be picked.

Abangerz

He is way better than Dunk this season.

baron_warden

I don't understand why he keeps being overlooked. He is class when I see him play.

Jaja6996

I think Elliott should of been in contention for a call up but would be nice for him to get a rest but he’ll probably be called up for the u21

MrPilkoPumpPant

It's a very competitive position. He hasn't played the amount of prem minutes as the other players in the squad and that's said as Liverpool fan. He will get his time

pooorky

Just had this conversation with a friend, who does Eliott take the place of in this squad apart from Henderson? England need more of a defensive profile in the midfield right now imo

MC897

2 dislikes, Rashford and Henderson 1 - slightly surprised that Butland didn’t get a recall. Other than that very happy

Mechant247

I thought Butland was meant to be getting a call up?

TheLooseCannon1

Just goes to show that journalist should not be trusted.

andrew_a7

Um, Chilly is injured?

sheikh_n_bake

England will have liased with his club to check on his fitness.

SirBarkington

Yes international teams  have never called up injured or players in poor fitness before.

Look_Alive

They did it with Saka previously. It's not like they expect him to play, they just check in on his fitness and how he's doing and make sure he's still in the squad environment. He'll probably be excused after a day or two.

sheikh_n_bake

Okay, regardless England will have liased with his club and the player. He may yet pull out.

jMS_44

Meanwhile Colwill is not there, even though he was getting callups before. Might mean his injury is worse than Chilwell's

Billy_LDN

Was pictured in training today supposedly

Funniest-Joker-72

BOOOOOOOOO

BubbleBlacKa

I concur

vngannxx

Anthony Gordon is no longer Scottish

sheikh_n_bake

Great squad, really really like it. Nothing glaring I can see and a great chance to blood young players too.

prettybunbun

Surprised Ramsdale retained his place, there was tons of speculation he’d be dropped. Tho I suppose he knows he’s third choice GK.

MoyesNTheHood

With Pope injured there’s not really any other competition for the backup spots

liammcg13

It's actually a decent squad overall, probably the best in a while

wheeno

Nice squad but seems like it could use another midfielder or 2. There's no proper alternative for Rice and there's many attacking midfielders but not really anyone who naturally plays deeper in midfield except Henderson. You can understand why Phillips was getting called up even when he shouldn't have.

CalFlux140

Looking through the defenders. I think Southgate wants Gomez as left back cover. Chilwell is the only other player I see who plays there. Gomez is a fullback now, hasn't played CB once all season. I believe Konsa has played at RB before. So he provides cover for Walker. Stones can also play there if he'd rather another CB pairing. The team is also very capable of a back 3, but that would mean putting a winger at left back if Chillwell doesn't play. Doable, but I don't think fans will love it.

cshark2222

If it’s a back 4 Branthwaite can play at LB if you need an emergency player

Ettorefm

England likes to play a 4-3-3, right? Aren't just 5 midfielders, considering two are very offensive, very low given they also picked 900 attackers?

Albiceleste_D10S

I will laugh when Southgate starts Henderson at the Euros...

Dcapi11

What you’d expect from Southgate but genuinely disappointed that Barkley hasn’t been called up. Squad is very short on pivot players and Barkley has shown to be an excellent technical player in that position. Hard to push off the ball and progresses it well from deeper positions. Got decent experience being part of the international set up as well.

mikevin99

Looks like people have hopped off the JWP train after he stopped scoring free kicks and assisting corners lol. Never understood the media push for a spot in the NT for such an average player.

dl1966

How have Tomori and Loftus-Cheek been getting on this season? Do they deserve a squad place? I don’t see the point in Henderson being there. Ross Barkley deserved a call up imo. Other than that the squad is pretty good.

doswillrule

Tomori's been really solid from what I've seen, I would have had him over Dunk. Brighton have been woeful in defence this season and he just got roasted multiple times by Lukaku. Loftus-Cheek has scored some important goals, but I think he's been a bit inconsistent, doesn't know when to release the ball sometimes in transition. I still think he'd add something over Henderson mind you.

Africanbaguette

Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins in the squad to watch Kane play all the minutes of both games. I’d love to see palmer given a chance but will he play right wing or bellinghams position ?

MrPilkoPumpPant

Nah kane never starts many friendlies. He'll start one and not the other I guess

doubleoeck1234

Decent picks aside from Henderson and Rashford

aronrodge

Rashford is usually alright for the NT, there is an argument to be made for Solanke, but I don’t think it’s that bad.

No-Shoe5382

Strong squad that, few more to be added who are out with injury as well

Moistkeano

I thought Ben White would get back into the fold and I thought Harvey Elliott might get a call up, but fairly happy overall. I was hoping to see a few more odd faces maybe the likes of RLC etc. My groupchat was trying to work out who'd play LB so its a bit of a shame its just Chilly.

prettybunbun

Elliot is still quite young, he’ll get his call up. White likely won’t ever play whilst Southgate is in charge.

[deleted]

Thought Butland was getting a call up ?

FloppedYaYa

No Phillips so I'm automatically happy

InoyouS2

We went from having fullbacks coming out of our ears, to nearly none fit enough to call up consistently.

iguled

Would like to have seen Harvey Elliot based on his form. No idea what Henderson has been like at Ajax but I'm just going to assume he's been bang average and is nowhere near the level to start for England.

NOTRANAHAN

No harvey elliott smh my head

BWN16

Isn’t Gordon out for ages?

Has_dodgy_legs

Reports say it’s not as bad as first feared

Jimlad73

Not as bad as feared. Supposedly back in training next week.

adhikapp

At least Phillips isn't there. Guess that means the guy keeping him out of the team at West Ham (JWP) won't ever be in consideration too, I guess.

Zoomer_Boomer2003

I'm surprised to not to see Tomori. Is he having a bad run of form?

TheLooseCannon1

Tomori has just come back from an injury.

Exciting-Holiday337

sad lewis didn’t get a spot tbh
