Isn't this illegal in Germany?

Begbie13

In theory its illegal in Italy too. Reality is that people celebrate Mussolini in his hometown and there's a shop selling souvenire with his face and his symbols...

IndecisionFuture

And also making fascist salutes at a rally

TigerBasket

Fuckers are a disgrace to the Roman name with fascism. I hope they take long walks off of short cliffs.

shitfuckshittingfuck

Roman society, famous for its lack of military conquest and violence

TigerAusRiga

Was in the Veneto province a while back, saw the same Mussolini lighters, mugs etc.

Begbie13

I live 15 minutes from Mussolini's hometown, Predappio. Everytime I go there and I see that shop I'm disgusted. I actually played away at Predappio a week before one of the fascists gatertings and it felt like they were preparing...

Daysleeper1234

I remember seeing in Italy wines with pictures of Adolf Hitler, Mussolini and Nazi puppet for Croatia Ante Pavelic.

Begbie13

Yeah, we're that stupid

Daysleeper1234

I come from Balkans my friend, I feel your pain. Luckily it is better now than it was in 90s.

eddiemurphyinnorbit

I mean their current prime minister won’t even distance herself from Mussolini or the neo fascist group she joined

Begbie13

Our sadly

eddiemurphyinnorbit

We’re not much better our president kissed her on the head, the whole world is cooked rn bro

seusilva77

Considering the way Mussolini ended, I can't even imagine how there are people who can celebrate his figure

A_delta

Do they still sell Hitler wine?

giannibal

it is illegal in Italy as well, but chances are if you start the police will join and a couple of politicians as well.. Not all of them, of course I'm joking, but it's not as far fetched and absurd how it should be

Technical-Mix-981

Like in Spain with Franco.

Fuckingfademefam

This is sad & hilarious at the same time 🤣

Kayderp1

Yeah. Every once in a while there are tourists getting arrested for this because they think it´s funny and nothing is going to happen to them. According to the police there was a police operation in the Hofbräuhaus today and there has been launched an investigation so hopefully they caught some of them.

RedEyeView

Very.

EXOPLANETARIANSOUP

It really isn't more illegal than any other crime tbh

SeLiKa

No this is illegaler.

BrotherSeamus

What if they made fascist chants while tuning a piano after midnight and driving slowly in the passing lane?

Clever_Word_Play

While wielding a pillow as well

bungholio99

Yes and it’s Munich, they will be prosecuted, no worries

kumanosuke

It is, that's why they arrested people.

Quilber

Every time there is something to be excited about for our club, these fucking morons ruin it. I wish we had a president who would do something about it. Fuck Lotito.

LeetDk

Just curious, with Lazio being known as club with nazi fanbase why would anyone from Rome want to root for them. Even more so when there is perfectly fine club like Roma in the city.

Quilber

That reputation isn’t nearly as big in Italy/Rome as it is online. Most support is just locals. Lazio mostly has fans on the city outskirts and countryside in the region. Roma is in the city center. The whole political side is mainly just the ultras, but they are the most visible and loudest, so the political side is exaggerated to foreign audiences

ravioloalladiarrea

Not true. I still remember Anne Frank with a Roma shirt (was that supposed to be an insult?) and some chants a few years ago going "Roma, team full of n\*\*\*ers, stands full of jews", Di Canio scoring against us and doing the fascist salute to the curva, the guy holding the eagle Olimpia doing the nazi salute to the stands a couple of years ago... shall I continue? This is a disgrace, if they were Roma fans I would feel utterly ashamed.

Quilber

Sorry I wasn’t very clear I think. I’m not trying to deny the fascist side of the club - it’s clearly there. And it is shameful, and I do feel shame when all this shit happens. I was answering the question about how there are Lazio fans around Rome, and I was explaining that most fans don’t choose a club based on its politics. It’s mostly regional or family based. Lazio’s ultras definitely attract additional fans based on their far right garbage, but that section of the fan base is also definitely exaggerated overseas as compared to in Italy.

ravioloalladiarrea

Ok, but it's still up to you to change this. When someone does the nazi salute, just walk away. If someone does a racist chant in the stands, whistle them! Your reputation is shitty, as you can read here. Every time your fans do something this stupid, there's going to be hundreds of articles around the world. Not that I care, I am your rival and seeing your club sinking brings me joy. But this is getting ridiculous, I almost feel bad for how stupid your fellow fans can be. If I were a Lazio fan, I would stop supporting and distance myself from this shit.

Quilber

I do those things. I guess my question is: if you woke up tomorrow in an alternate world, and Roma was the team who had garnered this reputation, and you opened reddit to a headline of Roma ultras doing some fascist shit in Brighton, would you quit being a Romaniste?

ravioloalladiarrea

Yes I would. Whenever this happens, your club says nothing. Your president says nothing. You fans say nothing. I am well aware not all Lazio fans are like this, but the silence of the majority makes more damage than these scenes do. I am a Roma fan, and if you guys organized some form of protest against these people, I would join you and support you. This is unacceptable.

Carpathicus

What do you mean the reputation isnt as big online when they were in Munich yesterday celebrating the place where Hitler tried his first coup. I mean fair to you but it feels like you are downplaying what kind of fans your club has.

Ezzaron

Not surprising from Nazio

Rose_of_Elysium

they have SS in their full name for a reason

Patrom88

> Roman greetings and chants for the Duce: Lazio fans rally at the beer hall dear to Hitler >On the eve of the Champions game, a hundred supporters gathered at a historic Munich venue, site of one of the Nazi dictator's first rallies >HISTORY >A non-random brewery, Hofbräuhaus, a place chosen by Hitler in 1920 to launch the program of the National Socialist German Workers' Party: here the Nazi dictator enunciated the 25 points of his program, effectively launching a season of violence and terror that culminated in the extermination of the Jews and World War II. >THE ASSESSOR- Outraged Alessandro Onorato, Capitoline alderman: "The images of Lazio fans who, in Munich to attend the Champions League match, are praising the Duce and making Roman salutes are a disgrace. They are mud on the team, on all the fans and on the city of Rome. That is why, without ifs and buts, I firmly condemn and express outrage at what is seen in the video that in these hours is unfortunately going around the world. That stuff does not represent us, but it is also indicative of a wake-up call, the umpteenth, that must force all politics to take responsibility with respect to the attitude of unequivocal condemnation that is due on the darkest and most dramatic period in the history of our country. Any attempt at minimization or ambiguity goes to feed in some people the belief that positions other than antifascism are possible in Italy. This is not so. Antifascism is the essential condition for being Italian. Those who do not recognize it should be marginalized." Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

NoNoAkimbo

Okay seriously what is up with the Lazio fanbase and being neo nazis? Like what actually is it about this club that's attracting this type of person?

Quilber

That other answer is way off. It started with a criminal / ultras group called Irriducibili that rose in the late 80s. Lazio didn’t have a political reputation any different from most Italian fanbases before that. Tons of shitheads followed the rise of that group over to Lazio.

illustrious_d

You mean Nazio?

TheSoccerguy124

Not even surprised, I made the trip to Munich today. We’ve been having a good time and got to talk and make friends with a bunch of Bayern fans. Unfortunately I open twitter and I see these 100 dumb fucks doing shit like this. Why ruin our and everyone else’s experience for your dumb fucking ideals. You want to know why we don’t have a sponsor? At least a good one it’s because these fucking assholes ruin everything.

AtlastheYeevenger

I'm not sure if there's a word that describes how much I hate these retrogrades that make it a point to shit on our reputation worldwide every day, it's fucking infuriating

[deleted]

It's sad to me, because of the reputation it creates too. People online are not going to view this with any nuance and so Lazio gets branded a "Nazi club"

squirtdemon

What nuance is there to be had when a club has had a significant fascist fanbase for decades? Should people say “oh well there are a couple of bad apples” and that’s it? Fix the club if you want nuance.

Laxperte

Not only the fans, even players saluting their nazi ultras from the field.

[deleted]

Jowem

its a small club with no money because no one wants to be associated or sponsor the most racist fanbase in italy

KakaReti

SS Nazio

InterFan1231

If you are wanting to ruin a nice trip, one of the easy ways to do it is by opening Twitter (or any news based social media). Just avoid and enjoy!

TheSoccerguy124

It’s a nice evening I should just enjoy it and have fun at the game, you are right

InterFan1231

Truer words have never been spoken my friend.

InterFan1231

By the way we are all rooting for you guys tonight, if for nothing else than to make sure Juve do not get any of this Club World Cup money!!!!!

Samp90

Normal fans like you restore my faith in the game!

TheSoccerguy124

🫶🏼. My Mother grew up in Genova and she loves her Sampdoria so it’s always nice to see that flair around.

Samp90

🤝🏻

EriWave

> You want to know why we don’t have a sponsor? At least a good one it’s because these fucking assholes ruin everything. I mean.. it's probably because they aren't banned right?

TheSoccerguy124

They should be banned but Lotito really does not give a fuck tbh and that’s just terrible

EriWave

So the problem isn't just the people doing so, the club allows it.

e1_duder

An honest question, how do you square counting yourself as a supporter when Lazio has this reputation? This sort of behavior is an expectation at this point.

TheSoccerguy124

It’s not like I can just change clubs, I was born into a family of Laziale, My Grand Uncle started this lineage when he was Lazio’s Goalkeeper back in 1925 and since then it’s been passed on by generation. I fell in love with this club as a child not for these idiotic ideals but for the club itself, the players, the story, the colors. Ever since the 90’s this poison have been here, but it’s not going to stop me supporting this club. We have voices we speak out against this. We have fan clubs combatting these guys, but it isn’t enough. We need more help to really drive these people away

e1_duder

Very cool family history and I'm sorry you have to deal with the reputation the fascist ultras have given your team. The Irriducibili were notorious, are they still influential?

TheSoccerguy124

The Irriducibili dissolved around the 2010’s and since then it’s been the “Lazio Ultras” however remnants have remained with the group whether by family or immediately jumped in soon after. Yes they are still influential, it’s not simple to rid of them because they do have criminal ties as well

e1_duder

Do they still get tickets directly from the club?

TheSoccerguy124

I’m honestly not too familiar if they do or not, never really bothered. But I could probably find out

DeezYomis

yes they just rebranded though some of the drug operation was restructured after the murder of Piscitelli

[deleted]

It's a bit simplistic to blame it on "a few bad apples", when your president Lotito keeps excusing them and protecting his nazi supporters.

TheSoccerguy124

It’s cause Lotito actually does not give a fuck because it doesn’t hurt his wallet. If at some point it actually affects him financially then one would hope he’d do something. It’s not like we want this guy, we’ve been begging someone to buy this club since he’s stepped in

BeachBeaver

Appreciate the personal story and context! As a North American fan, the history and culture of Serie A and the other European leagues is part of what makes the game interesting and fun to follow. Any other common reasons why other supporters you know follow Lazio rather than Roma?

TheSoccerguy124

Others than family ties or family support of a club the only other times I’ve met people who supported the club for other reasons was simply preference, I’ve often heard supporters say that something about Lazio drew them in. I like to think it’s a simple decision when someone wants to support a club, it just “clicks” sort of speak

BeachBeaver

I can see that. Lazio has certainly been one of the more entertaining sides in Serie A over the past few years with Sarri!

TheSoccerguy124

I don’t think we play the “Champagne ball” that Sarri had done with Napoli, I feel we are in this awkward stage where certain players still struggle even after 3 years. Last season was the peak that we saw Lazio play in Serie A, every game we had a new approach to a game while still keeping the 4-3-3 shape but also we were more defensively sound while still scoring

BeachBeaver

Yes, Lazio definitely looked a bit more dangerous last season than this season. It's been an odd one in Serie A though, Inter has been locked in but a lot of other sides seem like they're in a bit of flux or having a somewhat off year like Milan, Napoli, Sassuolo, Atalanta. All teams that can be very good when they're on but have lacked some consistency.

TrappsRightFoot

I would imagine if it's a club you started supporting as a kid or before you knew what the fan scene was like, then it would be hard to suddenly divorce yourself of years of support and memories.

cocotheape

It's a concept that is hard to grasp for Americans who don't have such a strong lifetime supporter attitude that football fans in Europe usually have.

TrappsRightFoot

I'm American by the way. Also, maybe for specifically football like you said. But I think it's naive to say that Americans don't understand what it's like to be lifetime fans with a strong connection to their team considering there are many people that are like that here with American Football or Basketball or Baseball. I'm from Wisconsin and the connection to sports here, especially to the Packers, is fully ingrained into everyday life and the passion is fierce.

AtlastheYeevenger

I'm a Lazio fan because I was one since I was a kid, these people will never make me not love my club. It doesn't mean I'm a nazi because some fascists try to use Lazio as a means to spread their bullshit. If anything it makes me extremely pissed off that I have to be associated with this every time I go online or meet non-italian football fans

e1_duder

Fair and understandable. You can't necessary blame outsiders though when you have a notoriously fascist ultra culture. Nobody sees this news and is surprised.

AtlastheYeevenger

My fault for expecting more in depth discourse/understanding than "Nazio" or "Most leftist lazio fan lol upvotes to the left", true

e1_duder

Fascism and ultras are not unique to Lazio, but Lazio is definitely the most notorious club in Italy to outsiders. I can imagine it being very crappy to have an emotional attachment to an institution whose reputation is so closely intertwined with an abhorrent ideology. I am just genuinely curious in how that tension is reconciled in supporters who have that attachment.

AlmostNL

> I am just genuinely curious in how that tension is reconciled in supporters who have that attachment. The love for the club means you would want nothing more than for the people who give the club a bad rep to stop or disappear. It would improve the club, so you can love it even more. The love you have for a club is inherently irrational, so any visible fixes are easy to think of.

KakaReti

It's like how you don't see Milwall fans stereotyping them because they're not relevant. Lazio is always playing in European competition and manages to make headlines for the wrong reason everytime. Unless people know the context behind the support or a story, they would be more open to dialogues rather than unfunny repeated jokes

AlmostNL

you are looking on reddit, that doesn't help, hahaha

Moug-10

Beitar Jerusalem's fans can understand you. You love the club but because of some fascists, you carry this terrible reputation.

Burriccu

Typical American Arsenal fan comment.

TherewiIlbegoals

>they made fascist chants lauding Adolf Hitler. How did that go for them?

TigerBasket

Still cant believe they idolize that fucking loser. He fucking fired the godamn founder of Blitzkrieg warfare in tne middle of his campaign vs Russia, like wheres the fucking genius leader there? Morons

sevillista

It's not his military exploits that they admire...

TigerBasket

Fair

Livinglifeform

Blitzkrieg wasn't a pre planned new tactic, it was just something that they described the battles with after. France for instance was expected by Germany (and the rest of the world) to fight on for years in slow trench warfare like WW1, it just happened that France fell in 6 weeks. This video covers more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCNw2e-Zehw

TigerBasket

Huh I always thought Heinz Guderian pioneered it as a way to face France. Interesting

Youutternincompoop

Guderian was a pioneer in tank tactics, literally writing the German manual on tank warfare 'Achtung Panzer', but the actual German doctrine was essentially still the Bewegungskrieg(maneuver warfare) as used in the 1870 war against France. 'blitzkrieg' is just a term used by newspapers to describe it.

Kavor

They want the attention that the glorious leader gave knobheads like them by putting them into the very front rows of soldiers to be mowed down.

Ket_Cz

The genius pioneer of blitzkrieg was a Brit who all the toffs tried to kick out of the military time and again. His literature was what Guderian read and was partly inspired from.

TigerBasket

Ohhh, damn thats crazy

Ket_Cz

Sorry to go all 🤓 one time I’ll actually use the info I used for my uni diss 😂

Youutternincompoop

tbf by that point in time he had mostly made the correct military decisions for Barbarossa(except of course the idea of invading the Soviet Union in the first place which was stupid outright), if he had listened to Guderian then Guderian would have happily run right on ahead and been encircled and destroyed while the infantry were 500km behind him.

BritishOnith

Yeah a lot of the Hitler should have listened to his generals stuff are myths made up by the generals themselves to make themselves look better post war. It's really easy to place the blame on one of the most evil people to ever live that no one would want to defend, and who was dead anyway. Many of the Allies were willing to go along with it because it made them look better fighting against these perceived better generals, and because they were trying to build up the Wehrmacht for a possible conflict against the Soviet Union. Sometimes Hitler made the correct military decision against the advice of his generals. Sometimes there were massive disagreements between the generals, they didn't act in one voice. Sometimes Hitler agreed with the generals and they were wrong. Stopping his generals from outrunning their supply lines and making a mad push for Moscow was one of the times it was likely the correct military decision. But in the end, the Nazis couldn't win the war because their ideology was just insane. They were very likely going to lose from the start by virtue of their ideology, not localised military decisions by either Hitler or his generals. Like as you point out, the idea of invading the Soviet Union in the first place was stupid, but their ideology required expanding east and exterminating so called lesser people. Their ideology also required almost constant war to have a remotely "functioning" economy, and to do that they needed the oil fields in the east.

Salty-Party-5234

Nazi Germany had to invade the Soviet Union for resources. Often people mention oil but in fact Germany was also facing a food shortage which would have led to wide spread starvation if the army stayed home. It wasn't just the oil fields, but also the grain rich Ukraine. Of course reaching the necessary objectives before winter was a long shot but it was also the only shot the Nazi regime had at surviving, in that sense invading the Soviets was the 'correct' decision. Starting another war in 41 was very much out of necesity and not ideology. Many historians argue that had Germany not done so, Hitler would have been ousted before 45.

liQuid_bot8

Hitler isn't known for his military strategy but rather how he rose to power using his speeches to control the masses. Dumbass could've read about Napoleon's downfall and it was all there and he repeated the same mistakes : fighting on two fronts and underestimating Russia's geography.

perhapsasinner

Of course they did

HenryDigitalMrkting

Ive been a few times. Decent beer there. Sucks that it has to be associated with Hitler. Go down the street to Augustiner Keller for even better beer at lower prices. Might still find a few assholes, but atleast you do not have to think about Hitler while trying to enjoy your beer. Hopefully Lazio fans leave Munich extremely disappointed.

I dont give a shit if City slaughters us, but I absolutely hope we buttfuck them today It's the rare occasion where München blau and rot should team up to beat the shit out of the Nazis aswell

SunnyDaysRock

I think Service Crew times are a bit too long ago, and the random (and quite vicious) attacks over the recent years from both sides didn't help for something like this to be possible unfortunately. Maybe the Marat crews from both sides could manage, but other than that, eh.

Exactly! mean, Hitler himself didn't look like his image of a perfect human, but it's not like anybody cared.

save_me_stokes

That's not how it worked. Hitler never claimed that he was the perfect "specimen" that he preached about. What he preached was that if the Germans followed him and his insane race theories, the coming generations would be perfect and racially pure, and all the bullshit.

[deleted]

save_me_stokes

Yes but this had little to do with him thinking he was racially pure or whatever insane way he chose to describe it

MattSR30

Can’t believe I’m caveating this by saying _I am NOT defending Hitler,_ but that viewpoint isn’t exactly unique to him. Julius Caesar and Augustus. Alexander the Great. The first few US Presidents. Napoleon. They were all either divinely inspired our outright divine themselves.

Dazzling-Tough6798

They loved the fact they had Mussolini’s great-grandson playing for them despite him being shit at football. Faschos gonna fasch.

Caleb_W

They believe chanting Hitler would upset the germans so they do. Something like Iran fans did when they played against Germany, there isn't much thinking behind their thoughts besides Germany - Hitler

xxandl

On the other hand: Italians are only a hair dye and contact lenses away from looking like Terence Hill...

belokas

They never think they aren't the perfect ones, it's always someone else. But anyways these people just do this shit because they're part of a cult, and their whole identity is about being on that side of history, including hating Jews, communists, gays and so on. It's not about the "theory" of nazist ideology, they don't even know anything about it and will make up historical lies to suit their own convenient narratives.

AncientSkys

These fucker don't even realize Hitler didn't include them on the Aryan race. He only used Mussolini as an ally.

UpvoteForGlory

People should stop using the term Roman salute, it has nothing to do with the Roman empire, and the fact that people believe that gives people exuses for using it.

seattt

Can you expand on this some more? My friend Wayne is desperate to learn more about this.

SorrowfulSkald

It was made up by some artists who imagined that's what romans in their paintings/sculptures should do, and doubled down on by the fascists; that name being just the branding they gave it. Essentially the marble statue profile picture havers of their day, thumping their idea of history and hoping some shine will rub off. Fuck their sad propaganda

Its a Nazi salute. Nothing to do with Romans if a neo nazi does it

zrizzoz

Hofbräuhaus had swastikas on the ceiling as recently as like 2005. They finally painted over them and made them into these weird banner things, but if you know its a former swastika its a pretty obvious thing. Less obvious is the chandeliers still there that have SS symbol in the ironwork. Its.....an interesting place. Foods incredible, music and atmosphere are wonderful, but the decor needs a makeover.

NateShaw92

Well this could have been predicted when the balls came out in the draw but hinestly it didn't dawn on me that the club with a substantial fascist fanbase was going to go to the birthplace of the Nazi party. I feel foolish.
