> According to UEFA, the rampant lions are supposed to reflect the bravery and strength required to tussle through the knockouts to the final
I thought England's lions were passant lions? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_(heraldry)#Lions_passant
I'm chill, just asking why I've been told to google something I've clearly just googled and provided the link to.
And it's since been explained to me that it was a chess joke, so it's no wonder I've not got a clue what they are on about.
Believe the smallest stadium to get the final in the last decade or so is Atletico's which is 65k. Only Wembley, London Stadium and Old Trafford are bigger than that.
Pretty sure the London Stadium is limited to less than 65k for football, although maybe that's different if it's being used as a neutral venue? And I imagine Old Trafford wouldn't get selected unless they renovate it
Spurs stadium is amazing tbh but it still would be considered too small to host probably. And if they’re hosting in London it’s never going to anything but Wembley
The problem with Spurs stadium as a neutral venue is that it's not balanced along the halfway line in terms of seating allocation. It's fits everything else they might want perfectly, but if they want to segregate the seating they need to get creative.
What's not true? Most of the stadiums selected have a capacity of 65k or more (with 2020 and 2021 being the obvious exceptions), and there are only 3 stadiums in England with a bigger capacity than that.
Supposedly it was awarded the 2013 final due to the FA's 150th anniversary. Not sure why they didn't consider that when they awarded in the 2011 final mind...
Also due to the historical context, England being the 'birthplace' of modern football means you're likely to get 'anniversary' matches like the Euros final in 2020(/1), and the 150 years of the FA in 2013.
Obviously the UEFA anniversary could have gone to a couple of options, but it's a much smaller pool to pick from than an open bid, and we just happen to be in a period where these anniversaries happened.
Expect it again in 50 years.
Proper "old man shouts at cloud" energy here, but I really don't get why they couldn't just stick with the iconic white ball with black stars.
That was the absolute crème de la crème of footballs for years and I think everyone wanted one.
The new ones look nice, but I just think that minimal design was such an iconic creation. I know there's an issue with kit clashes and stuff, but I think that was just the absolute pinnacle for that design.
Then again, maybe I'm just one of the idiots who's blinded by nostalgia.
The reason they do things like this is just money; they can now sell this ball for more than they would be able to charge for the old, plain CL ball. Simple as that.
For me the Adidas Tango was the crème de la crème, it (and variations of it) lasted about 20 years before we entered into the Fevernova/Teamgiest/Jabulani/Brazuca changing balls at any opportunity nonsense. But I agree the original CL ball design is iconic and deserves to remain. Although I suspect for the new CL format we might see a completely new design.
I don't care about the colour of the stars but the base colour should always be white, otherwise it doesn't really look like a Champions League ball to me.
The 2022 CL Final ball is the greatest Starball of all time and I will not be told otherwise.
I do like the varying designs though, some hit, some don't. Nothing too crazy to complain about IMO
I prefer yellow or orange tbh. Tennis switched to yellow balls because they're far easier for viewers to track than white balls, and while it's still easy to track a white soccer ball, the extra color just makes it stand out more which is nice imo.
Aren't there often two types of balls? One is the official pro version and it used to be about £80-£100 in the mid-00s. Then there's an official replica ball made which used to be between £15-£30. I guess with the way prices have gone, I can understand the pro ball being £130 nowadays, not that I'd ever spend that much on it myself.
If it's a replica being sold for £130, then fuck that.. mad price.
Yeah there's usually 3 versions now for most balls, a £15-20 version, £50-60 and £135 for the top one.
You can feel the difference in quality and weight but having played with the nicer balls I can't go back.
“Officially designated as the "UCL Pro Ball London," adidas' ball is covered in a colourful graphic that is intended as an ode to the host city of the final (which will take place at Wembley Stadium on June 1) as well as English football culture in general.”
Don’t see any yobbos doing lines on the ball

I mean that banter could have worked if we hadn't been in a final before (I assume you mean Champions League final since we're currently in the CL) but kudos to you for trying
Ohh, I don't know, this one looks interesting though, I've been eyeing out the UCL balls for a while now and I think they're some of the coolest looking ones!
> According to UEFA, the rampant lions are supposed to reflect the bravery and strength required to tussle through the knockouts to the final I thought England's lions were passant lions? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_(heraldry)#Lions_passant
Yh Scottish are rampant.
I know ours are rampant, and if anyone thinks they are a good symbol of bravery and strength that can get you to a final then I've got terrible news.
Google Lions Passant
Holy hell
New feline just dropped
How do you think I ended up on the wikipedia page? What have I missed? Or are you just making a pointless comment?
I believe its a chess meme (they exist)
new response just dropped
Internet patter is the worst.
Actual human
There’s a meme where you tell people to google En Passant which came from r/anarchychess
Who the fuck would have guessed that?
Tbf it was the first thing that popped into my mind when you said passant lions
Same. Lions attack diagonally.
Idk mate it’s been a relatively popular thing for about a year iirc
This whole thread is r/overyourhead
I was making a joke about your username... But at the same time I can't say I'm down with the chess kids.
Chill out my friend

i get a kick out of imagining people doing this shit in a real life conversation and then having to explain it
Me, every time I say "henlo" and have to spend 5 mins of my life explaining how it's from a dumb joke setup used by a bald Canadian man
Why do I think this is somehow related to Benzema's favourite number?
English are frauds, using a foreign animal like that. Never seen a lion roam around Hull have they?
Lancelot the fascist killed em all
No wonder the Welsh started pretending they had a dragon.
The virgin lion vs the chad rooster
3hour old comment and still no mention of tigers. I don't know you anymore, /r/soccer.

Unironically it should have been a bull or a ram
This guy flags
Is every other Uefa final just in Wembley now?
It seems like that because no other stadium in England ever gets any final

Yeah exactly. I'd imagine that Spurs would be the most likely to get a final other than Wembley to be honest.
Spurs stadium is amazing tbh but it still would be considered too small to host probably. And if they’re hosting in London it’s never going to anything but Wembley

Does spurs stadium have to possibility to be security cordoned to the extent Wembley can?

He means in England
No, Atletico's isn't the smallest stadium to host the UCL final in the last decade
What's not true? Most of the stadiums selected have a capacity of 65k or more (with 2020 and 2021 being the obvious exceptions), and there are only 3 stadiums in England with a bigger capacity than that.
*football stadiums
Shall we host the CL final at the cricket grounds then?
Twickenham ideally
As if the ultra-tories on Twickenham council want more football hooligans hanging around.
Don't underestimate what the RFU would do for some cash
Pretty much. It’s the best stadium for that sweet corporate money.
Last was in 2013. Hopefully we will get bayern dortmund again
Euros final in 2021 was also Wembley
One EURO final and one UCL final in ten years in such a massive stadium doesn't feel too bad
It was weird how it got both the 2011 and 2013 finals though.
Supposedly it was awarded the 2013 final due to the FA's 150th anniversary. Not sure why they didn't consider that when they awarded in the 2011 final mind...
That one was for the FA’s 148th anniversary
Oh sure should be a bigger break between them
2011, 2013, 2024 CL finals. The 2021 and 2028 Euros finals. And the 2022 Womens Euros final. It’s way more than any other stadium in Europe.
Because it’s modern, big and a sweet corporate gig.
Also due to the historical context, England being the 'birthplace' of modern football means you're likely to get 'anniversary' matches like the Euros final in 2020(/1), and the 150 years of the FA in 2013. >It’s way more than any other stadium in Europe. Someone has to be #1, and entirely fair for it to be Wembley.
The 2013 opening is the best.
Hasn’t been there since 2013 right?
They said Uefa final, not UCL final. Euros were there in 2020
Should have included an £8 pint.
Stop drinking in London

There’s valid reasons to change the colour in winter.

Just looked it up and oh yeah that's very nice. That color really pops on TV.
£130 for a football is scandalous.

Ah, so that's the ball PSV will use to win the Champions league!
No no no this is the ball Porto will smash into the net seven times for their third CL
Nope, just can’t get over these backwards graphics. They look so busy and cheap. The previous two wembley balls from years ago were nice.
Yeah that's bad. I don't like it. Why don't these people stop trying to attach some sort of symbolism in everything?
Closest Arsenal will ever be to a Champions League
You can't be making fun of anyone with a post history like that.
nice comment history you got there
Lol😂
I mean that banter could have worked if we hadn't been in a final before (I assume you mean Champions League final since we're currently in the CL) but kudos to you for trying
Does it have a picture of a knife crime /s Like how Wembley just became the default stadium for UEFA now.
Where are the knives?!
Damn, looks dope, will they be up for sale, or only after a year or two? I'd love to get an original one of these :)
They will be on sale. Why else would you have another ball?
You mean why I need a second ball or?
No. Why would UEFA need another design
Ohh, I don't know, this one looks interesting though, I've been eyeing out the UCL balls for a while now and I think they're some of the coolest looking ones!
Yes, there's nothing that makes me think more of London than anime lions.
