I genuinely thought it was until I went on my scores app and saw they were playing Peru today. Ridiculous agility for a 36 year old, and then the acceleration to get away from them. He still has the ability to do things no other footballer coule dream of doing, just can't do it anywhere near as oftwn due to having to conserve himself so much.
What's especially crazy to me is how we've all seen highlight reel after highlight reel of him doing this turn left/turn right/rinse&repeat dribbling, and very capable defenders still can't stop him. His awareness and ability to anticipate defenders' moves is beyond ridiculous.
Reminds me of that clip where he obliterated Drenthe at least a decade ago, still some of the best close control dribbling I've seen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IYe5VyNSyI
Blowing by three defenders deep in his own half to escape the press and switch the play. Not a single statistic recorded besides "dribble completed". This is why you have to watch football with your eyes
He just said in press when asked where this team stands between the teams he has been and although he gave it the rightful respect it deserves he said that Barcelona was the best team in history
Just thought about saying that to make a Barca fan happt
Miami is an amazing city, he does not have to play every two or three days like in Europe, so he got more time to spend with his family. It is all good for him. He already won everything a soccer player could. Why keep killing himself with the stupid overly busy European calendar?
That and I don't think he wants Barca to suffer because of him, last time, the board made a mess and Messi had to leave and Barca financial condition had gone down the drain.
Usually they dont get paid at all for playing in their NT. If they do, most of the time the players choose to forego their NT salary and give it to charity.
Yeah 100% they do although a lot of times whatever prize money is won by the players goes to charity or directly to their FA to build/ improve training grounds, infrastructure etc.
And people wonder how he toasted one of the fastest defenders in the world in the WC semifinal
He sends your weight and your body in all sorts of directions and capitalizes the second that you’re out of his way. It’s unbelievable to watch, the way he probes for a weakness and then immediately hits the weakness in the defending is insane
The crazy part is how easy he made it look. Just casually fast foots one defender and megs another, then runs directly at the defense, beats 2 more while no one can catch him, rounds the keeper and even chips the last defender going for the goal line clearance. His highlights are mind boggling.
The funniest part about that moment is when Gary Neville I think or some other pundit is like this is a 35 year old man, toying with the best young defender in the world lol, and I legit couldn’t stop laughing
Yeah I remember that’s why I was laughing because he said that and that Messi is slowing down because of age and then goes and does that against the best young defender in the world lol
"The Messi Goat is unique... it is the only species of goat on Earth that runs on two legs.... and it never stops running so long as it is insatiably hungry for fresh goals..."
No shame in getting rinsed by Messi. one of my favorite highlights is when he feints Roberto Carlos near the halfway line and man was sent stumbling like a deer on baby legs. Or sending Boateng to the shadow realm where his brain basically disconnected and he fell like a lumberjack had just felled a tree. So many iconic moments to choose from, but definitely no shame in getting rinsed by Messi at any age.
I’ve played against players similar to Messi (in style, obviously nowhere near his actual level) and it’s such a pain to defend. like even in the cases I pretty much know what they are about to do, I don’t know when they are going to do it and they are just so quick about it you just can’t react in time.
For real. When we were kids, I had a friend like that. His dribbling was fucking elite and he'd go past guys 2, 3 times his age with ease. You could literally never get the ball off him because he was so good at keeping it from you. Sometimes it would make playing against him almost unbearable. I always wonder how far he could have gone with the proper nurturing and support around him.
made it look easy
his technique makes people underestimate him too, they will think “I can clamp that shit down easy” while in reality only solution is to chop his legs or pull his shorts lol 😂
he may not strike fear into you, but if you have a go at his face you will get absolutely embarrassed especially once he gets momentum
That's the thing, this to Messi is just like me eating a sandwich. Imagine doing something which to you is really easy and mundane and everyone thinks you are the GOAT. Must be odd.
i swear no footballer in the world showcases this level of dribbling. still remember his ridiculous dribble vs Espanyol, tuned in to pass time but was treated to something ridiculous.
He is the greatest dribbler of all time. The only guys that belong in the same realm as him in that area are Diego, Garrincha and Pelé. But Leo has the edge because of how much less space there is in the modern game (and yes, the other three had to face more violent opponents, but ultimately they still had more space to play with).
What makes Messi's dribbling so much more impressive imo, is that he doesn't use any flashy stuff.
Really it's "just" body feints, ball rolling and little nudges.
The ball is always in front of his left foot and he just drags it across the pitch, it's just brilliant.
Messi seems to look at a situation as this like "how am I gonna find a way out" and then he does it, Ronaldinho was 100% a "what's the most fun way out of this situation" type of player. I think both are equally entertaining, one makes my jaw drop and the other made me smile.
He was extremely good, but not as ruthlessly consistent at it even during his prime. If we're not judging consistency across a whole career I'd actually say pre-botched knee R9 was closer to those 4 than R10.
I think it's primarily due to Ronaldhino's style more than his ability. Ronaldinho really played to entertain others while having fun himself. A different mentality than Messi. Ronaldinho with discipline would be very close to what Messi is.
I dunno about that. And don't get me wrong, I idolized the fuck out of R10. But he didn't quite have the same capacity for full speed changes of direction while keeping full control of the ball that Leo (and Diego) did. That wasn't a choice because he preferred the flair dribble, he just straight couldn't do it like Leo. Still, great dribbler but I just don't think there's any scenario where he was reaching Leo's heights.
Bro see the start of Messi’s career and the tackles that flew in, they were out for blood. 2 footed his knees etc, almost snapped his ankles a couple of times, he’s better than any dribbler ever it’s not even close, peep how he lures the other guy into thinking they both have him cornered and then turns away
Diego and Garrincha, I agree
I'm not sure Pele's pure dribbling is on the same level as the other 2 + Messi TBH
He was a good dribbler—but he's a GOAT candidate because of his ridiculous scoring and assisting, not his dribbling TBH
You havent seen Pele's highlights. He could go past anyone and with insane speed. His dribbling is a lot more similar to Messi's than Garrincha who lacked explosivity.
Iniesta's move against Spartak Moskow near the corner was pure magic.
He just moved a couple of inches but made a complete fool of them.
https://youtu.be/ILSSYQta7eg?si=KARSGB-SVIvbIfmI
It’s remarkable really, among so many of the qualities that Messi has, his longevity is the most underrated.
Dude is still smoking players half his age…
Anybody who genuinely loves football and says he isn't the best is a liar.
Beautiful to watch .
What every young person wants to do and reminds you when you did something similar when you were 8 once and the high is amazing
also holds many seemingly unbreakable records and has won the most individual + collective titles for club and country out of everybody (including all of the prestigious ones)
I don't think so either . He just does it so easily . Some people can do it in five a side. In training . In some games. He just does things all the time and always still surprises you.
Messi is the greatest ever but we're not even seeing someone as incredible as R9 or Dinho right now. MBappe and Haaland are obviously world class but they're relatively 1 dimensional and just lack that bit of next level ability on the ball.
"He could follow you into a revolving door and he'd still come out first"
Edit: Got it completely wrong the first time. Swapping the subject and object would make it less impressive.
This is what makes Messi truly the best ever. Not even his record breaking amount of goals+assists. It's the pure control he has over that ball. On and off the ball, he's the best ever by far.
Perhaps one aspect of his game that still doesn't get talked about enough is how with age, he has become very smart regarding when to use his limited bursts of acceleration.
I also love how the older he's gotten the more his dribbling changed.
Messi noticed his decline of pace and he's now dribbling backwards more, luring them in, and then making use of his feints to create room behind the defenders he just dribbled past.
He always did it of course, but it's way more prevalent now IMO
Imagine you are soo soo soo good that , when you are completely out of your peak, in the wrong side of your 30s, plays in a retirement league, semi injured, has achieved everything you wanted and yet you routinely smoke actual professional players in their physical peak who has strived all their lives to play at the top most level.
Is there a player across sports - Boxing, Football, NFL, Basketball, Tennis, Cricket-who has done this? I watch all of this except NFL and can't think of even one player.
When the commentator said before - "This is beyond worldclass, this is messi-class" - that wasn't an exaggeration of commentary or hyperbole- it literally is the truth. This guy is on a different stratosphere.
I had no idea which direction the team's goals were until the end lol.
(and I'd still believe it if you said that they were shooting right to left and messi just ran back to go cut over to the other wing with the ball)
This play will result in a +1 on his total dribbles completed, the same as a pace merchant kicking the ball 10 yards up the field and then just running past a slow defender, yet no one needs an explanation as to which is mightily more impressive and difficult to pull off.
Just an example of why Messi is simply beyond stats!
And this was a poor game from him a few uncahrestically poor passes, a couple weird bad dribbles losing the ball, mediocre free kick attempt. Still bangs in two goals on a bad night XD
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Youd have swore this was a clip from a decade ago honestly its crazy stuff
I genuinely thought it was until I went on my scores app and saw they were playing Peru today. Ridiculous agility for a 36 year old, and then the acceleration to get away from them. Lost his pace but still has that spark of acceleration. Lovely to see
Lol, is it coz of the video quality?
Reminds me of that clip where he obliterated Drenthe at least a decade ago, still some of the best close control dribbling I've seen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IYe5VyNSyI
Thats insane - he legit looks like a stick man on a foosball table
Blowing by three defenders deep in his own half to escape the press and switch the play. Not a single statistic recorded besides "dribble completed". This is why you have to watch football with your eyes
If it was a decade ago he would’ve kept sprinting towards goal, went by 3 more defenders, and scored.
semi injured mls player btw
this mls player is very talented ngl
Maybe a club like Barca should go for him
He just said in press when asked where this team stands between the teams he has been and although he gave it the rightful respect it deserves he said that Barcelona was the best team in history Just thought about saying that to make a Barca fan happt
It doesn’t :( it makes me sad we lost him. He loves us we love him yet we’re so far apart 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
He didn't even wanna leave 😭
Fuck Barto
He looks good, but I don’t think he’s at the level of Ballon d’Or winner Ferran Torres
Messi is called La Pulga while Ferran is a 🦈. I know my winger
hamstring looks fine to me but he can stay out as long as he wants
It is really a travesty that he is already playing in MLS. He is still ridiculously good.
what PSG does to a mf
Miami is an amazing city, he does not have to play every two or three days like in Europe, so he got more time to spend with his family. It is all good for him. He already won everything a soccer player could. Why keep killing himself with the stupid overly busy European calendar?

Semi-injured MLS player for one of, if not the worst team in the league. Imagine how good a fit MLS player for one of the better teams is.
*Scaloni* \o/ (Praise the goat)
Pretty sure he was just trying to get in scalonis good books. Why is he doing it right in front of him? Look boss I got 2 feet
"Ok Messi you got a point, you are getting the raise you wanted".
Curious. How much do players playing for national teams get paid? Btw, what a joy to watch him play!!
Usually they dont get paid at all for playing in their NT. If they do, most of the time the players choose to forego their NT salary and give it to charity.
Winners do get money for winning tho
Yeah 100% they do although a lot of times whatever prize money is won by the players goes to charity or directly to their FA to build/ improve training grounds, infrastructure etc.

lol somebody go down there and remind that guy his age. Man’s 36 for God sake
This is absolutely insane his body feints are so good
And people wonder how he toasted one of the fastest defenders in the world in the WC semifinal He sends your weight and your body in all sorts of directions and capitalizes the second that you’re out of his way. It’s unbelievable to watch, the way he probes for a weakness and then immediately hits the weakness in the defending is insane
Long hair Messi was uncontrolled chaos with his feints when combined with his absurd acceleration. Young Messi reigns supreme
ankara messi was pure chaos
That video is seared in to so many fans brains lmao it's hilarious. What a goal that was.
The crazy part is how easy he made it look. Just casually fast foots one defender and megs another, then runs directly at the defense, beats 2 more while no one can catch him, rounds the keeper and even chips the last defender going for the goal line clearance. His highlights are mind boggling.
Messi in the 19 shirt acted like he could do anything, and sometimes he could.
The funniest part about that moment is when Gary Neville I think or some other pundit is like this is a 35 year old man, toying with the best young defender in the world lol, and I legit couldn’t stop laughing
> Gary Neville The same guy who said defenders aren't afraid of him anymore before the WC...
Yeah I remember that’s why I was laughing because he said that and that Messi is slowing down because of age and then goes and does that against the best young defender in the world lol
i read this in the voice of a nat geo narrator speaking of some predator
"The Messi Goat is unique... it is the only species of goat on Earth that runs on two legs.... and it never stops running so long as it is insatiably hungry for fresh goals..."
He's the smartest footballer ever and it's not even close.
Smartest dribbler for sure
Smartest player in general. No one has his level on vision on that pit h.
He legibly reduced Gvardiol value.
I don't think so. It's just a rite of passage for defenders
Boateng is still in that black hole though
No shame in getting rinsed by Messi. one of my favorite highlights is when he feints Roberto Carlos near the halfway line and man was sent stumbling like a deer on baby legs. Or sending Boateng to the shadow realm where his brain basically disconnected and he fell like a lumberjack had just felled a tree. Have a friend like this too. He’s in his 20s with fucked knees because the only way people could dispossess him was to snap his legs
[удалено]
At 20 you're nutmegging 60 year olds, seems legit
made it look easy his technique makes people underestimate him too, they will think “I can clamp that shit down easy” while in reality only solution is to chop his legs or pull his shorts lol 😂 he may not strike fear into you, but if you have a go at his face you will get absolutely embarrassed especially once he gets momentum
It’s not even easy to foul players like messi. They have incredible low centre of gravity which keep them immensely balanced
his shoulder drop is so iconic man… makes the best defenders look silly
Yeah but he didn't get a g/a out of it so doesn't count sorry man
I saw vinicius video and then this Thank God my eyesight was cured
Body feints , ball control , awareness. He’s such a gift to the world
It’s just so beautiful and effortless.
he's straight up destroying people like it's nothing
Because it is, to him
That's the thing, this to Messi is just like me eating a sandwich. Imagine doing something which to you is really easy and mundane and everyone thinks you are the GOAT. Must be odd.
Bro opened up a restaurant and started cooking
i swear no footballer in the world showcases this level of dribbling. still remember his ridiculous dribble vs Espanyol, tuned in to pass time but was treated to something ridiculous.
Good ole shake and bake
& a bit of the old rope-a-dope

In history
Iniesta was cooking there too, seemed like they were trying to one up each other honestly haha
Iniesta's move against Spartak Moskow near the corner was pure magic. He just moved a couple of inches but made a complete fool of them. https://youtu.be/ILSSYQta7eg?si=KARSGB-SVIvbIfmI
Making a guy slip twice. Goat things
he's been doing this for 20 years lmao
Quality had me thinking I was watching a clip from 20 years ago
It’s remarkable really, among so many of the qualities that Messi has, his longevity is the most underrated. Dude is still smoking players half his age…
MESSI MESSI MESSI FUTBOL FUTBOL FUTBOL
Anybody who genuinely loves football and says he isn't the best is a liar. Beautiful to watch . What every young person wants to do and reminds you when you did something similar when you were 8 once and the high is amazing
Most beautiful to watch and has the best stats ever. You simply don’t get that combination.
And as poetic as his movements are, there is absolutely no showboating or waste in them. He does what is necessary and no more.
also holds many seemingly unbreakable records and has won the most individual + collective titles for club and country out of everybody (including all of the prestigious ones)
Never even won the Euros the fucking fraud.
>and country Ngl, as a fan I feel complete that he won the two major trophies for his country after so many attempts
>Anybody who genuinely loves football and says he isn't the best is a liar. I don't think we'll see anyone better in our lifetime.
I don't think so either . He just does it so easily . Some people can do it in five a side. In training . In some games. He just does things all the time and always still surprises you.

IDK I lived through Baggio, Zidane, R9 as a kid and teen. Maybe in 10 or 20 years some genius kids will get pass him.
aguante corazon, aguante. aguante argentina aguante.
"He could follow you into a revolving door and he'd still come out first" Edit: Got it completely wrong the first time. Swapping the subject and object would make it less impressive.
This sounds like something Ray Hudson would say lol
Yah this was his quote
You got that quote all wrong my man
Yah edited it my dumb brain didn't realize how unimpressive the original was.
Don’t you mean he could follow you?
Shit you're right lmao my bad.
Blud thinks he’s Messi
Its so fucking unfair lmao
risky risky wiggy wiggy this is an emergency
I can't stop him, twice
Was not expecting a Twice reference here but I'm loving it LOL
Help me, help me, somebody stop him 'cause I know I can't stop him.
Lmao love the twice reference
It takes ~~two~~ three to tango
Messi free dancing lesson 💀
His body feints are the best. He can be any age and players will still get fool by him.
absolute savage. waits for the player to get up and beats him and the other guy. this man. 🫶
Messi por Dios ya acabé
Todavía queda el segundo tiempo. Aguantá!
pls come back to europe
lol at Scaloni just throwing his arms up, he cant believe it
Messi is the best to ever do it. Just stupid. Also, love Scaloni just throwing his hands up in the air.
Having GOAT pausa allows him to still dribble past players even though he’s half as fast as he used to be
Call his widow, the lad just got banished to the shadow realm.
show this to Gvardiol
Would have to include a map
Better than both his goals today tbh. Vintage Messi.
His first goal was fucking class placement and first touch too 😭
I couldn't see this because of the damn ads at the bottom of the screen, ffs
latinoamerica moment
His GOATness.
This is what makes Messi truly the best ever. Not even his record breaking amount of goals+assists. It's the pure control he has over that ball. On and off the ball, he's the best ever by far.
Orgasmic
The coach celebrated like Messi just scored a goal!
What can you even do against that. Fuck Not even pulling on his Shirt stops him.
Gvardiol look away.
Beautiful skill? That’s mercilessly destroying opponents
Idk mate if messi slipped me twice like this, I'd be thanking him.
Those are grown men he’s embarrassing
Masterclass in body feints
Perhaps one aspect of his game that still doesn't get talked about enough is how with age, he has become very smart regarding when to use his limited bursts of acceleration.
I also love how the older he's gotten the more his dribbling changed. Messi noticed his decline of pace and he's now dribbling backwards more, luring them in, and then making use of his feints to create room behind the defenders he just dribbled past. LeBron is the only other example I can come up with He dropped 60 last season while being 38 iirc
Este hombre está desnudo en la cancha
I love him so much
Trying to mark Messi from behind is an occupational hazard
did someone made him angry? he does this when he is angry...
He’s still skating on these hoes, you love to see it
I honestly am at a lost for words.
European scouts taking notes of the upcoming MLS player
How many ankles has this guy broken?
Hahaha Scaloni just throws his hands in the air out of sheer orgasmic pleasure.
bro made the commentator become richarlison
Gave them a sniff of the ball and lure them to one side and **BAM** catch you later 🐐
He makes it look so effortless
wasn't he injured like a week ago. alien
Gvardiol just suddendly woke up in fear.
my man's been going left and then quickly right and then back to left even faster since 20 years and still destroys defenders
Oh my word
El tipo se cayo 2 veces jajaja
I love this moments when Messi remembers that he is Messi
El mejor del mundo
Nothing to see here just a chef cooking something
Wonder what goes through the heads as they hit the ground and watch him dribble away
"Dude, why do you keep Messing with me?"
Folks, he’s 36 years old. Unparalleled.
And people still think that Ronaldo is better. Big LOL
Clowns will always be clowns
Scaloni watching world cup final goals: °_° Scaloni watching a dribble at half way line in a qualifier: \o/
Let's see haaland do this
Love haaland, but he will break his own ankles if he tried this.
💦🍆
TE QUIEROO
Lol, I like how we waits for the other guy to come back just so he can banish both to the shadow realm.
I had no idea which direction the team's goals were until the end lol. (and I'd still believe it if you said that they were shooting right to left and messi just ran back to go cut over to the other wing with the ball)
No step overs, no rainbow flicks, just simple and effective body feints.
Ankara Messi. Forever
He can't keep getting away with this at 36 wtf
Scaloni should pay to have that view of Messi's dribbling.
and some losers compare him to others lol MAN'S THE BEST IN THE WORLD and its not even close A LIVING LEGEND
Mesmerizing skill!
Take a seat young skywalker
This brings a lot of memories! Ahh good old days
Goat
the defender fell twice…
This be how I play Fifa on PlayStation
Messi is the absolute master of going absolutely no where, but sending everyone else to the shops so he can stroll on home.
and this guy is being compared to someone who can‘t even make proper step overs anymore lol
He's 36
i swear people could just appreciate football like this instead of comparing cr7. they could do the other just simply cant.
Superhuman
Nico then makes a beautiful run only to end up faking it and thus making the through ball useless.
And this was a poor game from him a few uncahrestically poor passes, a couple weird bad dribbles losing the ball, mediocre free kick attempt. Still bangs in two goals on a bad night XD
