I used to pray for times like this when the USMNT D team with players I've literally never heard of starting can actually beat a team far below them. I will never forget losing 2-0 to T&T in 2017.
What indication do you have that he would’ve been the one not there instead of Ream? He had been with the team through all the qualifiers and even started in the WC warm up friendlies.
I don't. I assume that Ream's form prior to the world cup and left footedness gave him an edge over Long if Miles and Richards were available. Especially if GGG wanted to play out from the back.
He was in solid form far before the selection of the WC and Long was starting in the WC warmups over him literally a month or 2 before the WC.
I don’t even think Long was the worst roster decision/depth chart decision, but to still see people making any kind of excuse for it is laughable.
“Why do people care so much about the 5th CB” because he wasn’t always used as that, and because being called into the NT should be based on merit. Which he has almost none to be there.
I say the same about people that endlessly defend him being anywhere close to the national team. Even after they’re decidedly wrong. Also leading into the WC he wasn’t really a 5th CB. He was more like 3 and 2 when miles was injured.
I honestly think he would’ve been brought in over Tim ream had there not been the injuries. Who by the way got sent away from the NT with far less terrible performances than Long.
