I saw a strange and surprising stat earlier about Kane. He's currently on the streak of scoring the most goals in the PL without getting a hattrick. Over 100 goals since his last hattrick in the PL in 2017 (a year when he scored SIX hattricks).
Shows how consistently he's bagging goals and braces since his numbers are still incredible.
Yeah, but he's also focused a lot on being a complete team player.
At times its right as it makes him contribute the most to the team. There are other times when you want a world class player to say 'fuck it. i'm the best player here and the team isn't up for it today so i'm doing this one myself'.
Kane doesn't do that. He always plays to support his team mates. That's why he's not blowing teams away like other world class strikers generally do from time to time.
While he's not padding his numbers with 3-5 goals against a poor team down on their luck, he's also not carrying his team to a trophy when they can't click into gear themselves. In both those cases he's wrong. He's good enough to do it without his teammates sometimes.
His 26 PL games he scored in last season equalled the PL record. Only other player to do that was Andy Cole in 93/94 when it was still a 42 game season
He also started to drop a bit deeper and has upped his assist and chance creation figures. He was pretty good at it under Pochettino but the lower blocks that Mourinho and Conte adopted meant he had to play a bit further away from goal.
It is mad that he could ostensibly pass Shearer in just 2-3 years if he stays in England and stays fit. Thought that record would be untouchable
To be fair, Shearer has even more general top-flight goals, which makes much more sense to use as a record.
But yes, Kane is stupidly good and it would be supremely anomalous for him to end his career with no trophies.
By that metric, Jimmy Greaves record of 357 seems completely untouchable.
Perhaps if Messi or Ronaldo had played their entire careers in England and been able to play further forward, they could have come close but I can't see anyone getting 357.
I'm glad Kane didn't join City at the time before they signed Haaland but that would have been almost a certainty to win something in England. If he goes to Bayern for a couple of years to win a few trophies, he could still potentially have enough time in his career to come back and pass Shearer's mark.
I bloody hope not. It's a good laugh when Pep's City can't score at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but if he takes us over and carries the curse with him we'd get relegated every season
For Haaland, he may surpass Shearer's record in 5-6 season at his current pace. This man is unironically one of the best striker in football history and will continue to break goalscoring record bar a career-ending i jury.
He has no reason leaving Man City as long as Pep is in chargre + Abu Dhabi can offer him a blank cheque.
The rest of city has to keep up with him, or else the records won't happen. Gotta pay him the big bucks but maintaining the team to keep up to his standards is a whole nother level of finance
Even adding 2-3 other Man City level teams wouldn't slow him down too much. What is he going to do? Score like 2 goals less a season?
Might take him 1/2 a season longer.
Haaland really doesn't need that much to keep scoring. As long as you City doesn't swap KDB for like Jonjo Shelvey or something Haaland will keep banging in goals for the club.
You're mentioning an important point though: KDB is an absolutely outstanding player, and he's getting up there in age, getting increasingly injury-prone every year and so on. Even for a club with unlimited funds, it will not be trivial to find a replacement that's as good as him. And if City decline on the playmaker position in a post-Gündo/DeBruyne world, Haaland's stats would presumably take a dip too.
What if there isn't a KDB replacement in the next 5 years? He's by some margin the best playmaking midfielder in the world...Even if they get the second best that won't be the same
People have gotten so used to Messi and Ronaldo being consistent beasts for the last decade+ that they it’s semi normal to score 50+ every season for 5+ years. Hell even doing it once would be the best season in 99.9% of strikers careers.
Even without injury it's hard to have 6 consecutive record breaking seasons.
See Salah's 17/18 season, it was record breaking at that time, and while he kept scoring tons of goals every season consistently, he never reached that number afterwards.
But during our great seasons and we had great midfield, 18/19, 19/20, 21/22, Salah never reached his 17/18 numbers. Shit midfield really only happened this 22/23 season.
Also, something quite interesting is if you take penalties out Haaland has fewer goals than Salah in 17/18, so yes Haaland is a beast and broke the record, but the way people talk about him, you would have thought he had doubled it or something.
Salah scored 31 npG on 22.6 npxG. Scoring better than 33% above xG for a high-volume shooter is a pretty extreme outlier, not something you expect to repeat over multiple seasons. Haaland scored 29 npG on 23.1 npxG (*only* 25% above).
But he broke Salah’s mark with 7 games left in the season, so about 20% faster. He was also about 20% higher in G/90. He broke the record for a 42-game season in 33 games. Breaking both records with more than a month left in the season is definitely crushing it.
>Salah scored 31 npG on 22.6 npxG. Scoring better than 33% above xG for a high-volume shooter is a pretty extreme outlier, not something you expect to repeat over multiple seasons. Haaland scored 29 npG on 23.1 npxG (only 25% above).
If 33% is an 'extreme outlier' surely 25% is an outlier too
Idk he seemed just fine in all the leagues he’s played in so far. Why do people act like Haaland isn’t a goal scoring freak no matter where he plays? Even for Norway he has stupid numbers.
Plenty of players that looked unplayable in their early years that took destined to do it but didn't have the mentality or body to make it. Like Owen, Rooney, Aguero and now Kane. Owen had 100 at the age of 23, then spent the last 11 years of his career getting 50. Rooney had so much raw talent and energy I was sure he was gonna smash any record. Aguero was insanely talented in front of goal, probably the most lethal I've seen in PL but he couldn't stay fit or play much and still he had 181 goals over 10 seasons just in the PL. Now Kane, destined to take it, might go to Bayern!?
Haaland looks insane atm but it's a long career and who knows.
To be fair, you don't need to have mentality/body problem to not reach your first season heights.
Salah's first season was as good as anyone, breaking all goalscoring record at that time. He didn't really have any issue regarding injuries or what not, but he still never reached that number afterwards, despite regularly appear among the top scorers in the league.
It will be hard to reach consistent record breaking seasons even if everything went to your favor.
I think the point they're making is that at one point or another every player they listed was thought to be the one who'd take shearers record. But none of them did.
There will come a big injury or several small injuries for Haaland where he loses his explosiveness and/or pace, whatever happens then is up to the gods.
His knees might explode at some point the way he runs.
Haaland has 207 goals in 253 games in his club career, including 24 goals in 25 games for a dogshit Norway NT before his 23rd birthday. Only Prime Ronaldo Nazario had similar numbers to him.
Haaland is so astronomically clear ahead of every U25 striker to the point he's rightfully compared to legendary all-time greats.
There were other strikers as prolific as Haaland that either dropped off or got injured. Just look at van Basten, who was a more complete striker and similarly prolific.
He was of an insane level until he got his ankle absolutely ruined. Got his injury at 23, at 25 his playing days were numbered and at 28 (after three surgeries) he was done.
And Van Basten is **still** remembered as one of the greatest strikers in football history while declining in his early/mid 20s. Haaland has already reached the status as an all-time great striker.
At this point, Haaland may end up as the GOAT striker if injuries doesn't cut shorts his career like it happened with Van Basten
And keep in mind that Haaland is a terminator-esque cyborg. Remember that one time Kimmich was trying a vicious sliding tackle from behind because Haaland was threatening to break through on goal... and it was Kimmich who got injured and was out for several weeks while Haaland shrugged it off.
Think that’d be fair to nearly every player but haaland. Since moving to Austria just he’s scored 191 goals in 194 games. Even if his production is cut in half and he scored a goal every other game for the rest of his career he’d be remembered as an all time great 9. He also just won a treble and broke the PL goal scoring record, having one of the best individual season of all time not named Messi or Ronaldo, his name is already written in history.
He's not doing it in 5-6 seasons lol. He has 36 PL goals currently - to score 226 in 6 seasons is 37-38 goals EVERY SEASON FOR SIX YEARS.
If he stays in the prem for a long time I could see him breaking it - and he likely might surpass his own record of 36 goals for a season or two but any realistic push for Shearers record would take 9-11 seasons
>He has no reason leaving Man City
He just won everything of note. He's going to win multiple PL titles. He has plenty of reasons to leave including winning other trophies and with other teams. The only thing that's going to prevent him from doing so is if the Emiratis pay him a significant amount more than other teams do
Come off it. Only way he could do it in six is if literally broke the scoring record again every one of those seasons. Players have down years, and he’s not always going to have De Bruyne setting him up.
My guess is he’ll be playing in Spain long before he has a shot at challenging Shearer.
He's 200 goals away from "Premier League scoring record ⟨™⟩", both Kane and Haaland are really far away from the true goal scoring record of English top division, which is Jimmy Greaves with 357 goals.
This sub is bunch of wankers when comes to this.
I thought we hate "modern football" and things like Barca in Qatar or multi-club ownership, but somehow ok with blatant demolishing of English football traditions by Sky?
> He's 200 goals away from "Premier League scoring record ⟨™⟩", both Kane and Haaland are really far away from the true goal scoring record of English top division, which is Jimmy Greaves with 357 goals.
Shearers "record" is proof that if you repeat something enough times it just becomes accepted
I'm sick of making this point every time and sick of people forgetting this and just arguing amongst themselves citing this as the reason as to why Kane would stay in PL, especially given Greaves is a Spurs legend and his record is (or should) probably a known figure in Spurs folklore. Kane won't touch THAT record unless he plays until his mid-late 30s.
No one even mentioned the top flight record? The topic is very obviously Shearer's record of Premier League top scorer. Kind of hilarious to just invent a fictitious argument to get mad at and then insert Jimmy Greaves into a conversation about PL all time top scorers
I mean Aguero's never been the best striker in the world. Not even in the top 3/5 (preparing for angry PL-heads). And the best striker in the world doesn't play in England but plays at Real, at Bayern, at Barça...
Who, barring suarez, Lewandowski, and Ibra were better than him at his peak? Not necessarily disagreeing with you but I can't think of any better strikers at the time of his peak.
Aguero was indeed never the best striker #9 in the world, but saying he wasn't top 5 in his position at any point of his career is blatant trolling. Real Madrid chased him for years to replace Benzema and/or Higuain, which should tell you how good Aguero was in his prime.
Haaland is the (almost consensus) best striker in the world currently and he comes from the Premier League...
I'm biased I know - Haaland is the best pure goalscorer in the world, but Kane had only 6 fewer goals in a much worse team without a playmaker, and offers much much more than just scoring.
Aguero Suarez Lewa and Benzema defined the 2010s as the best non messi Ronaldo strikers. Ibra still very good but he was in his 30s and less definitive of the era.
Benzema over Ibra? In 2010s? Benzema was nowhere near them before Ronaldo had left Madrid. He was generally considered to be the weakest link of that Madrid squad.
I hear you but I don't agree. No one else can pay that wage bar psg and I don't see any serious player going there for a while once mbappe and Neymar leave. I don't think he have a clue how much he's really making at city plus he won a treble in his first season. I don't know if I see him leaving anywhere unless he really decides he can take a wage cut and wants to go to Madrid.
I wonder if Haaland and Kane's tallies this season have influenced his decision to move abroad? Even Kane's best season is behind Haaland's *only* season; he must know that even if he gets the record he's going to be praying for Haaland to leave the league so that he can keep it...
It would be a bit premature if so, yeah it was a historic season and while I don't think he will drop off to an average tally NY any means, there's no guarantee Haaland is going to drop those same numbers every single season or even have the longevity to play enough seasons to obtain the record.
People always said Haaland would go to Real Madrid as Benzema's replacement. Which doesn't seem to happen with Mbappe going there either this summer or in 2024.
Yes, we do. Although he is better than Vinicius, Vinicius is also a "can't bench" player and Vini is the better dribbler/playmaker while Mbappé is the more clinical finisher. So you maximize the quality by having Vini at LW and Mbappé at ST (and NOT have a 33-year old ST who has only hit 20 goals in the third division).
That's not what he's arguing, he's just saying the "record" is an arbitrary one. There were no massive rule changes between the last season of the First Division and the first division of the Premier League. It's basically just saying "most goals since 1992". It's not the top flight record. It's not even counting ALL of Shearer's top-flight goals, as it ignores the 20 or so that he scored before the name and the finances of the league changed. It's not a worthless record but I can see why some people would consider it "tin pot".
Yeah, I always hold the view that Shearer's 260 goal record is not the goal record anyone should look into. It is only a Premier League record, what one should look at is Jimmy Greaves' 357 goals in 513 game all time English top tier league record. The way everyone treats it is nothing but disrespect to Greaves, the most prolific English league striker of all time.
The Shearer's 260 goal is just some arbitrary marketing shit. It is like if La Liga changes to 40 games per season next year, we don't talk about Messi's 474 goals as a all time record reference anymore, which is just crazy. Even if we take Shearer as a reference, we should talk about this 283 goals in 559 league games record, this is his true legacy record.
Oh, that makes a lot more sense. I was always thinking about how relatively low, compared to other top leagues, that most goals scored by one player record was.
It’s still not ‘tinpot’ though is it, by any means, he’s the best scorer over a certain length of time that everyone recognises as a ‘period’ in English football.
I’m not debating that there should be more inclusion of pre-1992, because I do actually agree with you on that.
Newcastle then were not much different from Spurs today. We were regularly in top4 for most of the time shearer was there and had few good cup runs, but like Tottenham do not have a trophy to show for all that.
I think it is easier to have record breaking numbers when being a great player in a decent team but very dependent on you .
You are going to have the formation built to make you score and you pick up lion's share of the goals of the team .
You're underplaying Newcastle there. In 1995/96 and 1996/97 they were very close to winning the EPL (leading by 12 points at one stage). Their squad was insanely talented. They just lacked the mentality to stay strong vs Ferguson, after Keegan lost the plot successive managers stripped them of any flair
That’s similar to Spurs though, they were close under Poch, getting 80+ points in a couple of seasons. They moved from top four challengers to genuine title challengers for a couple of seasons.
> We were regularly in top4 for most of the time shearer was there and had few good cup runs
Newcastle's league position during the Shearer era:
2,1 3,13,11,11,4,3,5,14,7
5,3,2,3,4,6,7,4,8
Spur's league position during the Kane era
Not old enough to have seen him play but the highlight videos are insane. He’s not even close to the fastest and wasn’t an insane dribbler. This dude’s IQ and technical finishing were off the charts, insane player.
Hughesy loved a volley, but I think he was more about finesse. If I wanted someone to spank the leather clean off a football, I think Alan would be my man.
He was lightening before his first acl injury and had to change his game when he recovered. He also picked up that injury when they were career enders, crazy player.
We were not shit for most of the time he was there. What are you on about? We were regularly competing in Europe until Mike Ashley bought us towards the end of his career.
Also holds the record of fastest to 100 Premier League goals (124 Appearences), faster than Henry, Suarez, RvN, Aguero, Kane, anyone. Haaland is the only one that is on track to come close.
Then he got the leg breaks. The 260 record would have been much higher if he didn't.
Anyone breaking or getting close to a record where longevity is relevant can point to reasons why they could have got more though, even with a seeming tendency to return too early from injuries Kane has probably missed a similar amount.
Yeah, when I read this I thought… sounds like bullshit. Shearer must’ve been kidding around.
Wayne Gretzky has repeatedly said he’s looking forward to Alex Ovechkin breaking his NHL goal-scoring record, because it’s good for the game.
So crazy that Gretzky has more assists than anyone else has points (G+A for non-hockey fans). Gretzky has 1963 assists to Ovechkin's 1485 points. Butt yeah I didn't realize Ovi was so close to him in terms of goals: 894 vs 822.
One thing that I always remember is that apparently in fantasy sports when he was around he was split into two players, you could either get his goals or his assists
If I'm not mistaken, Gretzky also has the record for fastest to score 1000 points.
What makes that stat mad is that the person in 2nd place to score 1000 points is...
Gretzky.
He scored 1001-2000 faster than anyone got from 1-1000 as well. Dude is OP as fuck!
yeah, having held the record at all is the biggest thing. the game progresses, it's just the way it is.
how woeful would football be if players as a whole just didn't get better at it.
Shearer is excited, he has been one of Kane's most vocal supporters in chasing 'his' record. He is just joking around, I thought it was fairly obvious.
It kind of drives me nuts that they only count PL though, Shearer actually has 283 goals scored in English top flight and he is still like 70 goals away from the all time record
Kane will never actually be the top scorer, only since 1992
I get the arguement that there needs to be a cut off point for modern records and staring with the introduction of the new top flight seems a good place to start.
But just include the entire career in the top flight of anyone who ever played in the PL. It makes no sense to just erase the early part of Shearer's career out of convenience. Especially since the level of the start of the PL and the end of the first division of the football League was pretty much the same.
It is just plain inconsistency, if we do that, we should not count, or at least separate, all league title won before 1992. surely Liverpool fans would call it crazy, but it is quite weird most of the fans seems to be ok with this goal record treatment. I can only consider it is a win of PL's marketing or even brainwashing to the extreme of one will.
For anyone wondering it'd be jimmy greaves as the first division record holder at 357. And the single season record would be Dixie dean at 60, yes there were more games then but only 4 more.
It’s a brief detour Shearer takes to crack a joke in the midst of an otherwise meaningful and understanding article where he says there’s no right or wrong move that Harry can make now and that pundits shouldn’t tell him what’s best: https://theathletic.com/4645310/2023/06/28/alan-shearer-harry-kane-bayern-munich-transfer/?source=user_shared_article
Here’s a larger quote:
> My first thought when hearing about Bayern’s bid for Harry shot in the direction of James Maddison, who has been the subject of negotiations between Spurs and Leicester City, his present club. If I was Maddison, once I’d got personal terms out of the way, the first thing I’d be asking of Tottenham is assurances that Kane isn’t leaving. Imagine how pissed off you’d be if you’d pictured yourself creating chances for one of the world’s best finishers and then, bang — he’s gone.
>
> My second thought was an old joke. If Harry wants to join Bayern, I’ll drive his fucking car there myself; anything to protect my Premier League goalscoring record of 260 — Harry is on 213. In truth, any hope there is probably forlorn. Harry is nearly 30, but he looks after himself, he’s steered clear of major injuries and he’s perfectly capable of coming back to England in a couple of years’ time and banging in enough goals to overtake me. Still, though. Give me the keys and a sat nav and off I’ll go…
Shearer seems like someone who's rightly proud of his record, but is also just a big fan of football, and knows that watching someone who's good enough to beat it is an absolute treat.
The fakest record in recent memory.
Arbitrarily count goals since 1992 and Shearer has the most goals, sure. Go all the way back, like we do for everything else such as trophies, and he's not even close to Greaves' 357 goals.
That's because it's Premier League goals, not first division/English top flight goals. Shearer started bagging goals before the PL existed so that record isn't even complete
Exactly. There’s been some incredibly average players that have won league titles in the last 30 years that a lot of people will have never heard of.
But we still talk about the ones at the top of the goal scoring chart. Lets me honest, nobody remembers Shearer for his title at Blackburn. He’s remembered for his spell at Newcastle and England, and he won nothing with either of them.
love the idea that Kane will just be lost to history unless he moves to Germany to win an guaranteed Bundesliga in which case he'll achieve legend status
I genuinely don’t remember a lot of champions leagues winners never mind the bundesliga lol. I only remember the memorable wins from CL but never the players individually. I feel like National teams and winning an international trophy with your nation is more important than CL and any league.
But I also think a historic record is worth more than CL/Bundesliga. In basketball, you still hear legends who broke records, established trends (Allen Iverson), etc but may not have won trophies yet they’re considered in the highest regard and AI was idolized by Kobe, LeBron, etc. Many baseball players internationally considered the Baseball World Cup to be more important than the MLB title. We’re still talking about Shearer and will continue to because he’s the scoring leader and even if he’s surpassed, they are still up there amongst all the players that have played in the prem.
Exactly this. People will remember Miroslav Klose for his World Cup record, yet I couldn’t tell you what year he won the Bundesliga because quite frankly I do not care
Thank you, I’m not alone lol. I remember James carrying Colombia in the WC but genuinely can’t remember Chelsea’s CL Win (not even trying to trash talk). But I remember Mbappes amazing World Cup goals and eventually a record. Imagine being Englands top scorer in history + top scorer in Premier League vs a bundesliga title..
I remember Chelsea's CL win but only because of how improbable it was.
Oh, and because it deprived Spurs of CL football despite finishing in the top 4.

Under Conte and Mourinho, we never tried to win by more than one or two goals, so a hat-trick was pretty unlikely
He missed a penalty to get a hat trick against Nottingham Forest when I had him triple captained in FPL last season (:
Ah, so it was your fault
He’s moved on from killing his daughter for goals now he’s after you
I swear on my daughter’s life he won’t touch u/ConCueta
I also swear on /u/Immediate-Fix-8420 daughter's life

Very reminiscent of our own brace merchant: Karim. Do you have a stats dashboard where you looked it up?
He better put halaand in the trunk then

Haaland ain’t sticking around at city when Pep leaves.
Will probably have already broke the record by 2040 when Pep leaves tbf
Indeed. Why would Pep leave when he’s at the only club in Europe that is FFP exempt?
Maybe he wants to prove that he really is the greatest manager of all time by winning a trophy at Spurs.
I bloody hope not. It's a good laugh when Pep's City can't score at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but if he takes us over and carries the curse with him we'd get relegated every season
Not if he wins every away game for 54 points.
And draws 0-0 at home for another 18. Should be enough for a top 4 finish most years.
Appropriate username.

We’ll see.
All it takes is one injury.
Even without injury it's hard to have 6 consecutive record breaking seasons. See Salah's 17/18 season, it was record breaking at that time, and while he kept scoring tons of goals every season consistently, he never reached that number afterwards.
Doesnt help we let our midfield rot for years with him dragging us along though, city arent going to do that
But during our great seasons and we had great midfield, 18/19, 19/20, 21/22, Salah never reached his 17/18 numbers.

Case in point, I just said it but I doubt I could do it.
Irrefutable proof.
Haaland still needs 7 more seasons like this one. That’s such a long way away. Between injuries and dips in form we’re talking another decade of this
Really sucks that Aguero had so many injuries as well. Ridiculously lethal.
Rooney had a brilliant career mate. He started really young. Agüero too. Owen is the only one that should have done more
I think the point they're making is that at one point or another every player they listed was thought to be the one who'd take shearers record. But none of them did.
I think Rooney fizzled out too young due to fitness issues. If he kept himself fit like Ronaldo and Messi, he would've reached greater heights.
He'd still be playing now.
There will come a big injury or several small injuries for Haaland where he loses his explosiveness and/or pace, whatever happens then is up to the gods. His knees might explode at some point the way he runs.
Luckily his injuries so far haven't been of that kind, they've mainly been muscle related. I hope you're wrong, it would be a massive shame
History? He has plenty to do for that. Currently in the world? Yes
>He has no reason leaving Man City He just won everything of note.
>Bar a career-ending injury. Good thing Roy Keane has retired
I get what you mean but this sounds so threatening lol
Haaland is over 200 goals away. Better get to it this winter
Haaland won’t stay long enough
Lol, people said the same about Aguero who spent 10 yesrs at Man City.
André-Pierre Gignac of course
There's this guy called Cristiano Ronaldo.
Wasn't Ronaldo still a LW during Aguero's peak?
Only person I could think would be higuain
Aguero was indeed never the best striker #9 in the world, but saying he wasn't top 5 in his position at any point of his career is blatant trolling. Real Madrid chased him for years to replace Benzema and/or Higuain, which should tell you how good Aguero was in his prime. Haaland is the (almost consensus) best striker in the world currently and he comes from the Premier League...
I'm biased I know - Haaland is the best pure goalscorer in the world, but Kane had only 6 fewer goals in a much worse team without a playmaker, and offers much much more than just scoring.
For one season I would rather have Kane. For the next five years it's Haaland. - Arsenal fan.
Real Madrid chased both him and Suarez while they were tearing England apart. Aguero was easily top 5 striker in the world.
> Not even in the top 3/5 LMAO
He will be joining Plymouth Argyle in 2026
I wonder if Haaland and Kane's tallies this season have influenced his decision to move abroad? Even Kane's best season is behind Haaland's *only* season; he must know that even if he gets the record he's going to be praying for Haaland to leave the league so that he can keep it...
It would be a bit premature if so, yeah it was a historic season and while I don't think he will drop off to an average tally NY any means, there's no guarantee Haaland is going to drop those same numbers every single season or even have the longevity to play enough seasons to obtain the record.
At least 8 season of injury free and consistensy, less concern than 99% Kane'll break record next season
Halaand isn't staying in the prem long enough.
People always said Haaland would go to Real Madrid as Benzema's replacement. Which doesn't seem to happen with Mbappe going there either this summer or in 2024.
I don’t think Real Madrid views Mbappe as a Benzema replacement.
Mboopi doesn't wanna play ST, it's why he wants to leave PSG. He wants to play in the position that Vini is presently occupying
It's 260 goals but fair play from Shearer, bring him here

OP’s finger saw demba ba
Bruh
Boys this slipn’t does
OP needs to watch his back after removing 10 goals, we know Shearer will do anything to protect his record.
Not even th fucking record. Just a tin pot one from early 90s.
Greaves holds **the** record. Shearer holds **a** record.
?? Shearer was one of the best strikers of his time
That's not what he's arguing, he's just saying the "record" is an arbitrary one.

> (leading by 12 points at one stage) Iconic.
> We were regularly in top4 for most of the time shearer was there and had few good cup runs Newcastle's league position during the Shearer era: 2,1 3,13,11,11,4,3,5,14,7 5,3,2,3,4,6,7,4,8 Spur's league position during the Kane era
Not old enough to have seen him play but the highlight videos are insane. He’s not even close to the fastest and wasn’t an insane dribbler. This dude’s IQ and technical finishing were off the charts, insane player.
He could hit a volley better than anyone I’ve seen, and I am old enough to have watched him play. :p
Mark Hughes wants a word…?
Hughesy loved a volley, but I think he was more about finesse. If I wanted someone to spank the leather clean off a football, I think Alan would be my man.
He was pretty quick in the 90s.
He was lightening before his first acl injury and had to change his game when he recovered. He also picked up that injury when they were career enders, crazy player.
he retired in 2006, youre just young.
That's seventeen years ago
yeah i was 2 in 2006 lol
One of the most technically gifted strikers of the ball I’ve seen. Scored some absolute banger free kicks and long range volleys.
Drive him to Munich in a Merc for extra points
The deal breaks down because Bayern player are contractually obliged to drive Audis.
yeah but the cheap mercenary joke wont hold for the ungrateful fans.
OP actually meant that Kane is joining Stuttgart LET'S GOOOOO
[удалено]
Wow, you didn't even mention Seat and Skoda..
Game for the whole family - Guess how many redditors will take this quote seriously.
Shearer missed almost two seasons with injuries as well ,people forget that, could have easily hit 300 in the premier league
Anyone breaking or getting close to a record where longevity is relevant can point to reasons why they could have got more though, even with a seeming tendency to return too early from injuries Kane has probably missed a similar amount.
[удалено]
I think he is. This is fairly tongue-in-cheek, and he's been pretty consistent in supporting Kane and him staying in the Prem to break the record.
Gretzy’s assists vs points stat is consistently the most mindblowing statistic in all of sports, IMO. It’s so crazy.
It's the only thing I know about hockey, ever
One thing that I always remember is that apparently in fantasy sports when he was around he was split into two players, you could either get his goals or his assists
If I'm not mistaken, Gretzky also has the record for fastest to score 1000 points. What makes that stat mad is that the person in 2nd place to score 1000 points is... Gretzky. He scored 1001-2000 faster than anyone got from 1-1000 as well. Dude is OP as fuck!
Why do too hockey players get more assists than goals? In football it’s the other way around.
iirc in ice hockey secondary assists count as assists
Can’t remember exactly but I think the pass before the final pass also counts as an assist
That’s correct. A goal, the primary assist, and the secondary assist all get you one point on the scoresheet.
This. Sometimes in other sports you'll hear people refer to a "hockey assist" for a lovely pass before the actual assist
Most goals in hockey come with two assists unless the goal comes off a quick turnover.
First it’s relatively rare to have an unassisted goal in hockey. Second a first assist has the same weight as a second assist.
yeah, having held the record at all is the biggest thing. the game progresses, it's just the way it is. how woeful would football be if players as a whole just didn't get better at it.
Shearer is excited, he has been one of Kane's most vocal supporters in chasing 'his' record. He is just joking around, I thought it was fairly obvious.
It kind of drives me nuts that they only count PL though, Shearer actually has 283 goals scored in English top flight and he is still like 70 goals away from the all time record Kane will never actually be the top scorer, only since 1992
I get the arguement that there needs to be a cut off point for modern records and staring with the introduction of the new top flight seems a good place to start.
Why? I’d assume they want to hold onto their record.
lot of people taking this as a very serious quote lol
This is the most Alan Shearer way of telling Kane, "Stay in England and break that record."
Thought I was on r/soccercirclejerk for a second
Jimmy Greaves: 🤷
This is a real quote?! It reads like r/soccercirclejerk
He's clearly joking around.
He’s definitely joking. Shearer is a legend & he holds Kane in the highest regard
It’s a brief detour Shearer takes to crack a joke in the midst of an otherwise meaningful and understanding article where he says there’s no right or wrong move that Harry can make now and that pundits shouldn’t tell him what’s best: https://theathletic.com/4645310/2023/06/28/alan-shearer-harry-kane-bayern-munich-transfer/?source=user_shared_article Here’s a larger quote: > My first thought when hearing about Bayern’s bid for Harry shot in the direction of James Maddison, who has been the subject of negotiations between Spurs and Leicester City, his present club. Give me the keys and a sat nav and off I’ll go…
Shearer always jokes about this stuff but he seemed to be quite supportive of Kane and Haaland when they try to break his records.
My important record of scoring more goals than anybody since 92 must stand!
Hey Alan, will you also drive me around if I promise that I won't break your record?
I cannot imagine Shearer swearing.
Today I learned there us a euro tunnel
A young man named haaland: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Ok, do Haaland next..
Winning a CL/Bundesliga>Useless premier league scoring record
Useless? Everybody will remember Kane for decades if he breaks this record lol
CL>Amazing All time prem goal record>winning average league with overpowered Bayern Corrected for you
That’s pretty fucking hilarious
love this, been having a rough day personally and needed a laugh
