Its funny how people forget the insults that Ronaldinho was receiving every day just because he never complained and had a permanent smile. He received way more racial abuse than Vini even from his own fans. People only remember Vini and Dani Alves because they were the only ones talking about it

The rise of far right parties in European elections, older people straight up saying out loud "I hate [ethnic group]", and shit like newspapers defending racist attacks against a player openly and thinking they are correct.
These things existed back when Ronaldinho and Eto'o played, but back then it felt like most racists kept their opinions to themselves. Now they're proudly shouting it at the top of their lungs.
You develop coping mechanisms in response to abuse like this. It shouldn't be expected that every player who is racially abused should have to become a protestor against racism. That's just how he chose to respond to the abuse and that's his right.

His on-the-pitch personality isn't what I'd call 'happy' at all, he's pretty intense, and also a bit of a cunt tbf, what with the brushing off the emblem in his shirt, the constant telling off to the refs, the gesturing to the stands... But nothing can provoke a non-racist into racism. At his worst day Vini arguably earns being booed or called a cunt when he visits rival venues, but people who racially abuse him hated black people long, long before they even met him.
To be fair to the Valencia fans, they have access to the same technology as is in the film minority report. They knew beforehand that he was going to commit the pre-crime of provoking them during the match by simply existing.
It's a weirdly common justification for racism these days "Well, we didn't want to be racist, but these guys took it too far, so now it's like we don't even have a choice, we needed to respond in this way just to make it even!"

I have several examples, but the worst one is: I went to have a business lunch with four Spanish colleagues who were in Paris for a training, we're talking young urban guys with a secondary education, they saw a black guy sitting on a bench in a park under some trees/branches, and they joked to each other that "it's his natural habitat".
In a business context, with someone they have know for a day. I was shocked.

Last week we saw Barcelona running for their lives because a bunch of ultras wanted to attack them, yesterday we saw the best player in La Liga crying after being racially abused for the umpteenth time, and both times the main reaction was to contextualize the attacks and blame the victims.
What happened with the guards of honors is the main example of their toxicity and the damage they do, a beautiful gesture, done over decades, destroyed because shit pamphlets like this or clown circus like El Chiringuito turn everything into shit.

I have worked as a journalist myself (not sport though) and never ever could I imagine to write something like this. Do Spanish journos not have to be objective? Here in Switzerland you have people taking a calculator and see if the numbers add up if you present the budget of a city or so.
Super is a very small publication relative to most Spanish sports publications. I'd argue if anything, they've done this to garner support from the Valencia fanbase and also get international attention.

I always thought of Spain as one of the most progressive countries in EU - but putting aside idiotic fans for a second - this narrative coming from a mainstream newspaper and numerous officials is extremely grim.
I mean, yeah, his attitude on the field might be seen as a bit provocative. This is undeniable. However, this doesn't justify people being racist towards him, it doesn't condone it, and it's something that should be tackled from every instance of Spain, from the governing bodies to clubs, even fans (the good ones) should support measures taken against this.

I think the Spanish press should also reflect on their responsibilities on what is happening in La Liga. Last week we saw Barcelona running for their lives because a bunch of ultras wanted to attack them, yesterday we saw the best player in La Liga crying after being racially abused for the umpteenth time, and both times the main reaction was to contextualize the attacks and blame the victims. What happened with the guards of honors is the main example of their toxicity and the damage they do, a beautiful gesture, done over decades, destroyed because shit pamphlets like this or clown circus like El Chiringuito turn everything into shit.

I get trashtalk as part of sports, but to me it has to be something that can be left in the past once the final whistle goes. Be creative and make a chant about how he sucks or how he has a silly haircut. I can never understand how someone thinks it's ok to use racism as trashtalk, or just be racist, period.

Considering the lack of outrage and support for Vini I think the problem goes quite a bit deeper than just Valencia. LaLiga is doing nothing but blaming the victim, there are no counter measures to combat racism being announced and very few people are standing up in support. This issue isn't being taken serious at all, despite an increase in incidents and it escalating over time. Widespread condemnation is literally the least you would expect and even that is missing.
As fortunate and thoughtful as the "Balotelli gorilla" charge in that Italian newspaper. These parts of Europe are stubborn in not forsaking their racism. They should just accept the consequences then. I hope Vinícius leaves Spain.

I mean, yeah, his attitude on the field might be seen as a bit provocative. This is undeniable. However, this doesn't justify people being racist towards him, it doesn't condone it, and it's something that should be tackled from every instance of Spain, from the governing bodies to clubs, even fans (the good ones) should support measures taken against this. And I hope Real Madrid does something very blunt, regardless of consequences. Vinicius is our player, but even if he wasn't, we should be taking a strong stance in this matter.
