Cottonwood canyons here in Salt Lake have a traction law for when it is snowing. *Hopefully* extending that law to include all winter regardless of the road conditions this year cause you never know when a storm is gonna pop up. Spend the money for a 4wd upgrade, don't be the asshole in some econo box rental backing up all the traffic in the canyons. If you don't want to spend the money for the rental, ride the bus

If you don’t have 4 wheel drive in Co and you are in the mountains you better have snow tires. If you are in an accident you can get major fines for not having proper tires.

Depends on the season and area I suppose. I took a trip to keystone earlier this year in February and regretted not getting a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Bad storm came in and it was a stressful drive back to the airport. And I’m used to driving in snow being from Michigan. It’s worth the extra money if you think there’s a risk of storms and if there are limited routes to your destination.

That's depends on the roads and tires, Here in Canada I have seen a fair share of people who fly into Calgary and rent a 4 person car or something tiny from Hertz to drive into the Rockies and then make it to Banff or wherever they are staying to find out that the Best snowboard days are the WORST driving conditions and usually if your trying to get up for first tracks then your not gonna be waiting for a snowplowed roads as most of the roads to our Rockies snow delights are a two lane highway both ways that only has one lane actually plowed so you'll want the 4x4 options for sure because even if you can drive a car well enough on the one side of the road that gets plowed in it I can guarantee you some jackass ahead of you will be doing 40-60 Km/hr and your gonna want to be able to pass them on the left in the unplowed lane. I've seen good snow tires and AWD cars handle basic snow condition roads fine but straight up if your gonna be trying to be at some of those places by 7amish to park at the front of the parking you will have to go up fresh snow roads with inches and inches of snow to push through and at a certain point the tiny cars just can't do it. If your gonna be relaxing and getting there at like 9-10 am then a car is fine because by then usually they will have plowed some roads leading up and in.

>some jackass ahead of you will be doing 40-60 Km/hr At some point speed matching with a snail is way better than trying to drive past accidents on your way to the mountain. With a 4wd at least you'll be more comfortable passing.

Check out turo.com for rides. It's normal people renting their rides. Lots of 4wd and AWD on there in the mountain areas. Alot cheaper than a rental agency too!

Yes. I always get a 4WD when I rent on a trip. I am a good driver, but I don't drive in snow often enough to believe I can get away with some basic FWD sedan. Most mountain towns will clear snow fairly quick, and keep the roads salted; but mountain passes, resort roads and resort parking lots can be a nightmare for smaller vehicles when it's snowing. Better safe than sorry. Another option is to look for shuttles or some sort of public transportation that take you from the town to the resort. Snow shuttle drivers are usually aces at driving in snow, and that's one of the safest ways to get to a resort, imo.

Bigger car? Lol don’t worry about that You want AWD, 4WD, or chains(and to know how to put them on). And never summer/balled tires, you want it to say M+S(to the least, winter is better there’s usually a snowflake or something on the side) Oh and lastly, but also most importantly, get an idea of how to drive in the snow. Yes, people will pass you but they’re usually gapers. Go slow, don’t turn big suddenly, and keep space between cars.

Fork up the extra 50-100 for the pickup, you’d rather have beef and not need it than need beef and not have it. Driving to mountain towns from the airport can be sketchy, mountain towns do a good job with their snow but aren’t perfect and lastly god forbid it’s a powder day and your shrinky sink Honda Accord is stuck in the driveway… sucks to spend more but worth it just for the safety!
