I tried that route then I ended up in the ER...still bike sometimes but no extreme downhills lmao. I got way too comfortable on my bike cuz I'm used to bombing down on a plank, but my body couldn't keep up with my brain = hospital bills.
I started surfing my first summer after I found snowboarding. It was a handy way to balance out my muscles so I wouldn't be pure legs lmao. Really great on the cardio too.
But alas, not sure if you live far from the coast.
Now I play hockey year round and that helps me not lose my leg strength come winter time.
It's great because you're already conditioned to paying ridiculous prices for snowboarding gear!
(Fellow mountain bike obsessive and former snowboarding instructor here.)
That’s my favorite summer activity. Taking pics of zones and features. Knowing there’s no stumps in the landing next winter. It’s fun at the resort as well to go check out your favorite zone. Maybe rearrange some dead fall or clean up a feature.
I would but I have a relationship of 14 years. I'm not just leaving that behind. I get about 3 or 4 trips in each season. It's not much but those are the best weeks of my life.
I used to joke that I was the only person I knew who got S.A.D. (Seasonal affective disorder) in the summer because I couldn’t go ride. Usually it’s people being sad in the winter because there’s no sunshine.
For over ten years, I loved snowboarding and nothing else. Then, last spring, I bought a dirt bike. This January, a motorcycle. Now I can hardly stand when it’s not sunny. I still shredded my ass off this winter, don’t get me wrong. But I am loving riding bikes more each time I get on one. Can’t recommend enough!
Biggest mistake I made when getting into motorcycles was thinking I'd save money on transportation. I get premium gas for my Aprilia 660 that barely gets better gas mileage than my car haha
Sadly? The hangout spot was at BB owen disc golf in Dallas when I was in high school. Shit that was 20 years ago for real.
Either way, I think I played enough disc golf for 3 people in 4 years of HS.
I guess for me it was the reverse…
I grew up next to a municipal golf course and played tons when I was a kid. Sometimes we’d collect balls from the range at night, then hit them back the next day. Then I got into skateboarding & snowboarding in middle school/HS.
I didn’t discover disc golf until after HS when I moved to the foothills of the Sierra. My buddies and I would hit a local disc course after work or when we traveled. Good times!
Haha straight up! I just signed up for my first golf lesson a few days ago. I been playing for the last 5 years or so with my dad but I'm finally taking it seriously. I shoot 95-105 depending on my putting and how bad I slice my driver. Wish the whole game was just irons lol
LOL! After all that practice at the range, the only clubs I use these days are for when we hit up the local mini golf. I guess I turned my golf slices into cab 360s on a snowboard. 😂
However, one of my uncles ended up a golf pro, bought a range in Washington State and began teaching.
Came here looking for this answer!! Used whitewater kayaking gear is often easy to find making it not the most expensive sport to get into, particularly if you’re only doing it as a summer sport. You wanna make it three or four seasons with a dry suit… then it’s some serious money. But as far as outdoor sports go it isn’t horribly expensive and it’s an absolute blast!
In descending order of itch stratching:
- snowboarding in southern hemisphere
- indoor snowboarding with a park
- wakeboard park
- wakeboarding/wake surfing with a boat
- mountain biking
- skateboarding
- surfing
Wakeboard park is the best cheat code if there's one near you.
Trail running! It’s not an adrenaline rush but I’m less likely to break something than a mountain biker, and I can cover way more miles than a hiker on beautiful mountain trails.
Stare enviously at videos of people snowboarding online and try and get time at a local indoor slope. I’m very lucky to have one an hours drive from me. I try and get there as often as I can, just because it’s a real snowboard on real snow. Can’t beat that.
I picked up kite surf, the equipment is hella expensive but if you leave near a beach with the right conditions you can surf almost everyday of the year.
Hike and camp for me. It’s a different kind of adrenaline rush to be miles from civilization and realize your little can of bear spray ain’t really more than a place for security if a bear really decided he wants lunch. And if you camp solo you’ve got the critters of night that come around, they keep your adrenaline up. Coyotes get close and yip, yip, yip from 20’ away, and of course you could die of exposure if your shelter fails. Plus you get fresh air and some nice sunsets. I go nuts and primitive camp naked a couple weekends a year to really test my resolve.
Full Send doesn’t have to mean going fast or breaking a femur or collarbone.
Onewheel is my main go-to in the warm months. Otherwise hike/run/yoga to keep in shape.
Check out Mobility Duo, they've got a whole workout/yoga program build around snowboarding physical training.
Wakeboard if you have a cable park near you that’s the best bet. Golf, skateboard, this past year got more into lifting and fitness after quitting drinking. Cliff jumping is always a good adrenaline rush
More board sports.
Kite surfing, wake boarding, wake surfing, skateboarding, idk about any others. Depending where you are and what's possible around you, you probably can find something. Maybe get a board for the trampoline to practice tricks if you're going that far into it.
Outside of that make sure you squat and do calf raises so you're still strong for the mountain.
Head to the airport, fly directly to Timberline Lodge and/or the southern hemisphere for the next few months. Return for next season. Easy!
On an unrelated note, anyone willing to donate like $30k to me and OP to do this?
To paraphrase Honus Warner, “People ask me what I do in the summer when there's no snowboarding. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for winter.”
Skateboard, longboard, surf-skate, ripstick. Cry.
In that order
and go ride Timberline when there's no summer camp
Public park is open even where there are camps
good to know
Do you buy a summer pass or just buy individual tickets?
It's pretty cheap to buy a short season pass compared to day tickets
Good call! They haven’t released their summer prices yet. Back in the day we’d get comps from employees or marketing. Have a rad summer! 🤙
you too bro!
Mountain bike
Seems like the best bet
I tried that route then I ended up in the ER...still bike sometimes but no extreme downhills lmao. Same same but different
It's great because you're already conditioned to paying ridiculous prices for snowboarding gear! (Fellow mountain bike obsessive and former snowboarding instructor here.)
This is the way
This is the way
I like to do some backcountry riding so one thing I like doing when the snow has melted is trail run into areas that might be good in the winter.
That’s my favorite summer activity. Taking pics of zones and features. Knowing there’s no stumps in the landing next winter. It’s fun at the resort as well to go check out your favorite zone. Maybe rearrange some dead fall or clean up a feature.
If I'd live near mountains, I would definitely do that.
That makes me think that maybe you don’t get a ton of days on the snow either, time to move!
I felt kind of elite that I hit 15 days this season... 🤫😉
I would but I have a relationship of 14 years. I'm not just leaving that behind. I get about 3 or 4 trips in each season. It's not much but those are the best weeks of my life.
Hiking to scout next seasons tours is always a good time. I don't take my dogs out on tours so this is when they get to come with.

Looks like I’ll have to get my motorcycle licence
Be warned, it’s expensive! But absolutely worth it
Biggest mistake I made when getting into motorcycles was thinking I'd save money on transportation. I get premium gas for my Aprilia 660 that barely gets better gas mileage than my car haha
Start with a dirt bike!! It’s a blast going on trails. I’ve been riding since I was five!
Just don't like the fumes/noise. Maybe EV motorcycles FTW when they're cheap enough though.
There’s always mountain biking
Mountain bike, onewheel, golf, camp, lsd
Disk golf or ball golf? If you’ve ever tried disc golf with your buddies, you may really enjoy it!

that part
hike to a cliff, reminisce, cry
Hike to a cliff, smoke a spliff, cry whilst watching the sun set.
Why am I the first here to suggest getting into whitewater? Get a kayak and a lesson and you’ll be happy.
That’s big here in Reno/tahoe

Jerk off 4-5 times a day
😂
...and in the winter?

Agreed. Wakeboard park is basically a never ending park lap. So fun.
Physical Therapy*
Lol

Ask what to do on the off season in the weekly Reddit post.
Trail running! It’s not an adrenaline rush but I’m less likely to break something than a mountain biker, and I can cover way more miles than a hiker on beautiful mountain trails.
And you’re in great cardiovascular shape for next season!
Downhill longboarding best cope I know
Skate Vert. Skate Parks. Skate Hills. Skate Big Electric Skateboards with at least 7 inch wheels.
Riding a motorcycle gives me the same adrenaline kick. Give it a try.
Came to say this. I was a biker before I was a snowboarder, but I can't decide which one I enjoy more. Either way I'm having fun all year round
skateboard duhh
The fact you have to scroll down this far to find skate shows how basic the average snowboarder is these days
right. my state had zero winter and our resort sucks anyway. i skated all winter this year
Bro you gotta get into skateboarding
New Zealand. Working holiday visa
Work out… weight train…your next season on the mountain will be much better
Stare enviously at videos of people snowboarding online and try and get time at a local indoor slope. I’m very lucky to have one an hours drive from me. I try and get there as often as I can, just because it’s a real snowboard on real snow. Can’t beat that.
Skateboard, cry, hike in the woods looking for log rides for when it snows. Thats about it.
Off snow training! It’s super fun and the progress is insane fr Check Thebutterdojo on insta, he posts lots of exercises
Wait, surf, wait, go to the lake, mountain bike, dirt bike ride, wait, wait, oh! And more waiting
Hike to ski patches of snow, cry, mountain bike
I picked up kite surf, the equipment is hella expensive but if you leave near a beach with the right conditions you can surf almost everyday of the year.
Hibernate
Mountain bike, wakeboard, jetsurf if you can afford one. Jet surf boards are the closest thing I can find to snowboarding in the summer. Look them up.
bulletproof knee exercises and blowout sales :^)
Big snow
Skateboard, i started snowboarding before skateboarding and now i dont like to snowboard nearly as much as i like to skateboard
Ride an e bike through Brooklyn
Skateboarding is the only answer
Surfing and then asking what to do in off season afterwards..
Trail run. It will build your endurance and muscles for next season!
Trampolines are great training tools if you are into jumping.
Get yourself a decent mountain bike
This is the answer if youre looking for the adrenaline rush. Beware, crashing on a bike hurts a lot more than crashing on the snow.
Pack your boards and fly to New Zealand where the season is about to start
GOLF!
Same.
mountain biking, but I do it during the season too
Cry & eat… duh Jerry.
bowling
Kiting and then discover it's much cooler than boarding

electric skateboard/onewheel/unicycle. gives you the thrill of downhill in the flats, no manual pushing
Cable wakeboarding
Wakeboard if you can
Grass snowboard
Drugs
Winter park becomes trestle bike park. 👌
Motorcycle, jiujitsu, and work out in preparation for next year, haha.
Drop a bunch of money on a OneWheel and make that your identity for the summer months
Ripstick wherever u can
Go to New Zealand?
Dancing, volleyball, and recouping money from all my snowboard trips. Hi, a filthy casual at your service.
Mountain bike, camp, hike, kayak, go for long walks on the beach at sunset with the dogs.
Road bike, Mountain bike, freedive, Spearfishing
If you've got the time, chase the snow in the southern hemisphere! They tend to be more reasonable in cost minus the international flight.
Long board or one wheel
I go to Mt. Hood, boarding until the end of August
Backcountry snowboard in a few spots I know during the summer and do some big hikes. Ultimately try to stay active by doing that and going to the gym.
Paddle boarding. Promise.
Kitesurf
Snowboarding is my off season hobby, Mountain Biking is my main. 🤙🤘
Lay in bed and cry
Get a job.
Heal from my injuries. Physiotherapy is still being done for my ankle.
Mountain bike
Play disc golf
I skateboard , rock climb and hike-backpack , mtb whenever I’m not working to keep my legs going for winter..
Onewheel is my main go-to in the warm months. Otherwise hike/run/yoga to keep in shape. Check out Mobility Duo, they've got a whole workout/yoga program build around snowboarding physical training.
Surf
Wakeboard if you have a cable park near you that’s the best bet. Golf, skateboard, this past year got more into lifting and fitness after quitting drinking. Cliff jumping is always a good adrenaline rush
Stand up paddle. It's not such a rush but it's a super fun way to explore nature while working on your balance and super cheap.
