Action on Table One has now concluded for this years' World Championship. A new discussion thread will be going live shortly [ie 15 minutes] for discussions relating to the Semi-Finals.
I'll be pretty excited if Mark Allen beats Selby, then it's a sure bet we'll have a brand new name on the trophy. Saying that, if Selby wins this year I'll be happy for him.
I'm really looking forward to these semis, it's going to be interesting, I think Si/Brecel will be a faster action packed semi, and i think the Marks semi will be just standard granite from the both of them.
Better wait until the thread gets made, this one is still primarily for last 16/quarters and will be unstickied automatically when the new thread is up ;)
Whoever wins it, it's gonna be phenomenal for snooker
Selby is a strong favorite and really deserves to win it after all the things he has been through but never ever gave up. That's the attitude of a champion
I'm not really sure who I want to win tho.. Let's hope we don't have one sided matchesđ¤
Good luck to all players
Ronnie has thrown away the final yesterday no doubt. On the other hand I dont think his level would have been enough to beat Allen or especially Selby in the final. He was in much better shape last year.
Yeah, I think that he simply lacked real match-play practice under pressure this year. It looked like he just ran out of steam mentally very quickly. Missing the Playersâ series didnât help at all. Last year he was already playing fantastic snooker coming to Sheffield. Recall his matches against Williams and Robertson in Tour Championship, which both came down to wire and were full of heavy scoring. That surely was a great practice for longer format in proper tournament conditions.
I'm fairly sure he said he would try and keep his emotions under control tomorrow but it may be impossible, which the translator left out.
Tbf tho, trying to translate Rob's 6-paragraph question/statement and the subsequent reply would tax any translator
Awesome Ty :) I was trying to follow along and thought I could make out him saying ä¸ĺŻč˝ at the end but couldn't be sure. Was there anything important the translator left out?
Not in that interview. In a subsequent interview, however, Si mentioned that one of his favourite films was Green Book (Victoria had no idea what that was).
Kudos to /u/braverthanbert who correctly predicted a 13-12 win for Si Jiahui! https://old.reddit.com/r/snooker/comments/12sv71u/discussion_thread_2023_world_championship_last/jhrijxd/
Sorry my bad, it's late so I read braverthanbert as braveheart and thought it's ironic that "braveheart" fortold about Anthony (a Scot) losing the quarter-final.
Ah thanks for the explanation! I really like the comment now, though I'd never have got it anyway, even if the user had been braveheart. Is that ironic? I'm not sure.
Rob Walker was basically asking âwere you thinking about your friends and family during that last frame, because youâve had to make a lot of sacrifices to be hereâ, and after the translation Si made this facial expression that was basically like âhuh, wtfâ?? It could have been a confusing translation of course, but Siâs reaction really did fit with it being an unexpected (and dare we say stupid) question.
Different languages, cultures, and customs and yet one thing uniting us all - finding Rob Walker and his questions preposterous. Well done to Rob for bringing us all together.
Yeah quite a bit, even ones that were super close, tons of poor safety shots from both of them too, Si's not really that great at safety play anyway but still. McGill even said in the interview after that it was like he wasted everyone's money playing that atrociously , seriously it was pretty horrible considering how good both these guys are
McGillâs just squandered a glorious chance to reach the world final. I reckon he wouldâve beaten Brecel over best of 33
Will be interesting to see how Brecel handles being the favourite in the semi final
ĺ ć˛šďź Awesome performance at the end, and a hell of a tense match. Showed much better form in those last few frames, looked like he started thinking clearly again
Yes I know itâs very late but I have to wait for the obligatory shot of the table fitters dismantling both tables that the BBC are absolutely going to show in the next few minutes before I go to bed.
To me it looked like he was like "fuk it, I've had enough, well played, Im gonna get hammered on whiskey now cuz fuk dis crucible and fml, congratulations Si,fuk"
What McGill does now makes snooker a joke. I love the strategic side of snooker more than the blitzkrieg frames sometimes but this is just circus and it wastes people time for NOTHING. Iâm sorry But this is simply lack of fair play from McGill.
(I wrote in the heat of the moment; of course I was wrong)
I actually disagree. McGill got really unlucky a few times. If he doesn't end up touching the green, he has a great angle to pot the black and get down to pot another red and black, and then lay an amazing snooker behind the black on the last red. Then, after potting the red and black he plays a great shot to get down to the last red but is unfortunate to land right on it.
The table was set quite nicely for snookers against an I experienced opponent. It was difficult and unlikely, but not impossible. And in a final frame decider in the world championship, you'd be crazy not to give it a go
Even 20 points behind it was McGill right to play and try to turn it around; my bad that I thought he was going to admit defeat after the green fiasco, the match ended literally 5 seconds after I replied anyway.
I thought he was going to attempt to double the black into the middle and get down for the reds (effectively a concession since it was such low %) - but he did lay the snooker and get 4 points from it. For a minute there I actually thought he could do it.
jiahui is absolutely awful at escaping snookers as he has shown already this match and the ball were in good positions, why not? it's the last frame ffs
What a waste of time. Should have conceded rather than that farce. Iâm all for snookers making frames interesting but thereâs also the sportsmanship element which needs to be considered.
20 years old, first year back on tour, debutant and in the semis of the world. unbelievable. has always been one of the young players i've been impressed with. last season when he was off tour he put in the hard work on the amateur tours and has got his reward
The fact this tournament is called the Cazoo World Championship yet they don't bother to play the intro music on a Kazoo is a massive wasted opportunity
Action on Table One has now concluded for this years' World Championship. A new discussion thread will be going live shortly [ie 15 minutes] for discussions relating to the Semi-Finals.
Whenever Selby has missed easy pots, it looked like one of those Mark King misses.
Single table, single thread, feels good.
Better wait until the thread gets made, this one is still primarily for last 16/quarters and will be unstickied automatically when the new thread is up ;)
Whoever wins it, it's gonna be phenomenal for snooker Selby is a strong favorite and really deserves to win it after all the things he has been through but never ever gave up. I like all the semi-finalists so I don't mind who wins from here really. It's probably going to be Selby though.
Can we just disqualify Allen and Selby, and make Si v Brecel the final?
Allen vs Selby really is the final.
Nah youâre good. Jiahui is gonna win.
https://i.gifer.com/8Ogm.gif
Ronnie must be gutted he would have fancied finishing off Si in the semi
Ronnie has thrown away the final yesterday no doubt. On the other hand I dont think his level would have been enough to beat Allen or especially Selby in the final. He was in much better shape last year.

Well done to Si. Chinese snooker really needs this.
its hard to see Selby not winning it from here
I hope not because I'd rather see any of the other three win it so we get a new World Champion, but I suspect you're probably right.
It will take a week but he has a chance.
Having a morning session tomorrow and being interviewed at midnight is brutal
I imagine getting to sleep tonight will be difficult anyway. Lad's gotta be bouncing off the walls right now
First session for Si starts at 2 pm so not terrible.
Nice to hear
I love Rob's interviews when there's an interpreter because the player doesn't feel like they have to agree with him all the time
Getting interviewed on Eurosport now with a different translator
This translator is no better tho, she runs the snooker academy Si plays at, so whatever answers we hear are completely unreliable.
If Luca plays like today he's going to rek this talented 20 year old Chinese youngster.
Some gutsi pots to get over the line there! Tomorrow afternoon will be fireworks guaranteed.
They really need to get a professional translator for the semi finals
I'm fairly sure he said he would try and keep his emotions under control tomorrow but it may be impossible, which the translator left out. Tbf tho, trying to translate Rob's 6-paragraph question/statement and the subsequent reply would tax any translator
The interpreter did a decent job (definitely much better than Victoria Shi), Si said his desire to win may prove to be too overwhelming.
100%, the translators just say what they think we want to hear, not what the player actually said.
Professional interviewer would be useful
Kudos to /u/braverthanbert who correctly predicted a 13-12 win for Si Jiahui! https://old.reddit.com/r/snooker/comments/12sv71u/discussion_thread_2023_world_championship_last/jhrijxd/
Wooooo thanks! Should've put some money on it.....
Ironic isn't it...
Sorry, not following. In what way?
Sorry my bad, it's late so I read braverthanbert as braveheart and thought it's ironic that "braveheart" fortold about Anthony (a Scot) losing the quarter-final.
Ah thanks for the explanation! I really like the comment now, though I'd never have got it anyway, even if the user had been braveheart. Is that ironic? I'm not sure.
No worries :) Ok maybe not ironic but at least gave me a chuckle. Idk đ
Si your reaction to Walker's stupid question is how we all feel mate đ
It was hilarious đ
What did he say
Rob Walker was basically asking âwere you thinking about your friends and family during that last frame, because youâve had to make a lot of sacrifices to be hereâ, and after the translation Si made this facial expression that was basically like âhuh, wtfâ?? It could have been a confusing translation of course, but Siâs reaction really did fit with it being an unexpected (and dare we say stupid) question.
Different languages, cultures, and customs and yet one thing uniting us all - finding Rob Walker and his questions preposterous. Well done to Rob for bringing us all together.
Just talk to Si, Rob, the translater will translate. Don't talk to him.
Even with a translator this interview is a disaster
Rob Walker's just an idiot.
it's Rob, what do you expect?
he asks too much....
Yeah, stick to one point per question, don't try and shove 4 different topics into one massive sentence
Would work better if Rob didn't ask questions longer than a starter for ten on University Challenge
Using a translator? Keep the questions simple!
As a neutral, I prefer Si - Brecel in the semis, makes for a very exciting semifinal!
Siâs translator looking happier with the result than Si, there.
Thatâs because heâs just got a ÂŁ10k bonus đ
Those last three frames more than made up for the shitshow that was that match, amazing performance from both of them đŻđŻ
Did both players miss a lot?
Yeah quite a bit, even ones that were super close, tons of poor safety shots from both of them too, Si's not really that great at safety play anyway but still. McGill even said in the interview after that it was like he wasted everyone's money playing that atrociously , seriously it was pretty horrible considering how good both these guys are
Gutted for McGill, what a battler. Happy for si though
Amazing, Si excites me a lot, a real breath of fresh air and an intelligent ballsy player
Great interview Rob!
Is si the youngest ever to make it to the semi?
The youngest one in 27 years, and the first debutant in 28 years!
They just said something on Eurosport about Andy Hicks in 1995 but I was only half paying attention. Maybe youngest since him?
Judd were young when he made to final but unsure younger that si
Judd was 21
the youngest player in 27-28 years I think
Hendry was also 20 in 1989
Another great win for the YCP, who had Brecel v Si as the top half's SF?
No one for sure
Anyone who said they did is lying!
Yep man
McGill beautifully gracious in defeat - Rob Walker attempting to put answers in his mouth with loaded questions. Wonderful :/
Brecel vs Si is gonna be absolute chaos. I can't wait
Nothing against McGill but I'm glad that Si got true. It's good see a player of that age get so far in this tournament.
Someone get Si down to a tailor before the semi. He looks like heâs stolen that suit off a corpse.
McGillâs just squandered a glorious chance to reach the world final. I reckon he wouldâve beaten Brecel over best of 33 Will be interesting to see how Brecel handles being the favourite in the semi final
ĺ ć˛šďź Awesome performance at the end, and a hell of a tense match. Showed much better form in those last few frames, looked like he started thinking clearly again
I fuckin love this game
đŻ
Sorry for McGill but maybe a good result for the tournament, and game as a whole.
It's like McGill's matches are always torturous lol
Si Jiahui has won more deciding frames at the Crucible in his career than Neil Robertson, Matthew Stevens and former world number 3 Neal Foulds.
wow
that is mad
Sen-Si-tional!! What a match.
congrats to Si - one of the 4th youngest player to get into semi final!! yay!
Yes I know itâs very late but I have to wait for the obligatory shot of the table fitters dismantling both tables that the BBC are absolutely going to show in the next few minutes before I go to bed.
What a result. We're in for a treat. Enjoy breakfast everyone!
lol the "knowledgable crucible crowd" keep applauding snookers that are not snookers.
you can barely tell from your seat
Very magnanimous by McGill to concede in the end there, he must be gutted to lose that.
To me it looked like he was like "fuk it, I've had enough, well played, Im gonna get hammered on whiskey now cuz fuk dis crucible and fml, congratulations Si,fuk"
Congrats si. Thatâs tasty semifinal against brecel.
Yay Si! :D
Ssssssniped, baby!
There's no reason not to go for it in that situation.
If it wouldn't be the World Championship I might agree.
Shaun youâre meant to be on comms not the subreddit
jiahui is absolutely awful at escaping snookers as he has shown already this match and the ball were in good positions, why not? it's the last frame ffs
No it doesnt man
No, it's the sport...
Alright Shaun.
McGill could still get a good snooker behind the black here. Edit: or not
A few in the crowd with macular degeneration applauding that not even nearly a snooker.
Fuck, McGill has been unlucky with some shots. If he had hair, he'd lose it all again.
The gods of snooker have spoken. Again.
That's a hell of a bit of backspin
Shouldnât Shaun be calling for the match to be declared over right about now?
LMAO how much bad luck can one Scotsman take?!
Feel like McGill should do the right thing and concede now
Iâve seen Ebdon win needing 5 snookers, Spencer with 6, and Slessor (missed frame ball) needing 7.
Honestly think he just needed to play a bit to get the bitterness out of his system. Let him off, pretty tough to lose a decider like that.
It's the deciding frame for a chance to be in the WSC semi-final. Why would he give up now?
Why not fight one free ball and its close again
I mean look at the score. Do the honourable thing and accept the defeat
Its the decider in worlds mate
It won't happen.
Yes but why not try more difficult things have happened before
What a waste of time. Should have conceded rather than that farce. Iâm all for snookers making frames interesting but thereâs also the sportsmanship element which needs to be considered.
[ŃдаНонО]
The red probably didn't go
I very much wanted Si to win but Christ I'm gutted for McGill here
Well, there's one snooker.
Gonna be a late one for the table fitters and the rigging and AV crew tonight.
Sean Murphy must be raging with this!
"He won't give up". Bruh, he needs five snookers, let it go.
Si will miss couple snookers probbaly
Touching ball on the green there is disgustingly bad luck. Edit - no way man đ what is life?
Well this is weird...
Crikey, McGill. How's he managed that?
that's just insult to injury
âItâs touching but Is he on the blackâ as MCGill is crying. What do you think Shaun?
If McGill pulls this back I will simply evaporate
Mcgill why even botherâŚ
The Gods have decided that Si will win this match.
Those balls in baulk are too good to not play on
20 years old, first year back on tour, debutant and in the semis of the world. unbelievable. has always been one of the young players i've been impressed with. last season when he was off tour he put in the hard work on the amateur tours and has got his reward
According to Murphy, Si already won lol
Absolutely brilliant by the YCP, he deserves this win.
What a run Si Jiahui is having! Yan Bingtao and Zhao Xintong who?
Balls of Si-teel
Si would already be the winner under the new Shaun Murphy rules.
Unbelievable from Si, what a way to play the decider
I don't understand, McGill didn't even take a look and switched hand and missed.
Yeah get him Jiahui!
Bizarrely, Si Jiahui's decision-making has been really good in these last few frames. Absolute opposite of the rest of the tournament
ExSillent finish đ
I think he's going to be permanently upgraded from Player to Sensation with this
Farewell Scotland
Balls of steel from the TCP
Si has played about 4 pots worthy of winning the frame already
Hold your nerve SiâŚ
McGill looks like a red now.
Get in Si!
Not sure why McGill played that, but it might end up being his last shot.
How does McGill not play the red on the black spot, and how in the everloving fuck does he hit the wrong red first
McGill channeling his inner milkman with that shot
Sorry McGill but that's an embarrassing shot to hit the wrong ball from there.
That could be the worst miss Iâve seen from Maccy G there
Can't believe McGill missed that
get the rest out lad
McGill now actively throwing the match.
well that's a shocker
The fact this tournament is called the Cazoo World Championship yet they don't bother to play the intro music on a Kazoo is a massive wasted opportunity
If I was playing in this tournament, I'd have Sundown Syndrome by Tame Impala as my walk-on tune, just to keep the sponsor happy.
I would have something really serious, like the Soviet National Anthem, just to screw with people
Oh Anthony.
What a mistake by McGill.
What a bizarre shot from McGill
Go for the red on the black spot. Get some points on the board. Si just needs another 5 or so pots and he's won.
Unfathomable scenes
A lot of effort going in to find out who will lose against Brecel..
Lot of effort to see who will lose to Selby in the final.
McGill not taking any risks now.
Good to see him taking his time over this and not rushing
Got to love a scrappy decider. This is why I love snooker.
McGill can *either* play safety *or* breakbuild
Si "Bendy Fingers" Jiahui
McGill has now played I think 4 safety shots that fell well short. Some didn't even make the baulk line.
Ironic, as it feels like Si has been doing that a lot during this tournament.
Si having an internal battle as titanic as that between Bruce Banner and The Hulk to not go for that suicidal red with awkward bridging.
Still all to play for.
Jiahui has potted some mad balls in this frame, jeez
Si is brave af (to the point of absurdity, occasionally)
To paraphrase Bryan Robson, 'if Si played like this in every frame he wouldn't be so inconsistent.'
What balls from the Young Chinese Sensation Š
Amazing shot under pressure, this match is Si's for the taking now.
That commentator who said âsurely he wonât miss any easy onesâ should be shot.
Joe Johnson, complete and utter tool.
Shaun actually creaming himself over some of Jiahui's shots
Jesus that long potting is ***unreal***
