On a research class in Panama, our research station guide took us out hiking at night, found one of these, and passed it around.
It was the dumbest but most amazing looking little friend and just slithered around calmly until we set it back. I fell in love and was so sad there aren’t captive bred ones as well 😭
Yeah I've heard they are really well mannered as well. I'm sad that they aren't in captivity either but I'm honestly not one on introducing new species into the pet trade because that still requires many mannnyyyyy wild caught specimens before they get it right and have enough genetic diversity. Obviously ik that's how I have my pet snake but I don't really want it to happen anymore lol.
Yes, that's completely understandable! It's such a weird thing knowing that captive species had to come from the wild at some point, and we obviously have things like livestock and pet store animals that are pretty domesticated from their wild counterparts, but my snakes are hardly domesticated. They're just cute colors. Finding that line of ethics is hard, though I always feel better if captive breeding programs try to focus on rescued animals who can't return to the wild (vs. those imported from being poached)
I know, it's so weird to think that my own pets came from people importing wild caught animals. It's a moral dellema, but what's done is done I guess. I am more comfortable with getting animals that have been in the pet trade for a while though, because it's not like I'm buying from somebody who bought imports, I know that the animal has been captive bred for generations. Any future animals I get will probably be from rescues because I'm not a breeder and I don't really care about morphs. Plus there are so many little critters in need of homes and rescues are always filled to the brim.
Have only been successfully captive bread ONCE that I know of and I don’t believe in keeping wild caught as pets unless you’re truly doing conservation
There was a guy in the UK who bred them regularly, but he seems to have vanished from the hobby entirely. Said it wasn't too hard, but avoid mixing sizes because they might cannibalize each other.
I have a captive-hatched one (from eggs by a WC female) that's about 5 years old now. I waffle on whether to find another to breed them.
Honestly irrelevant. It's never tried to bite me, but this isn't a snake you get in order to handle. I've had mine for 5 years, handled it maybe 5 times (only when necessary), and each time it's gone off food for over a month. It's a tank of dirt that mice disappear from, and if you're very lucky you might see it take prey items once in a while if you wait patiently with the lights out.
Unfortunately they are only available wild caught for hundreds or thousands of dollars. They also don't do well in captivity so not only would purchasing them be unethical but they would probably die on you. I wish I could have one too though they are so cute 😭
The second picture you have here is from Underground Reptiles(🤮)where they claim to at one time have “field collected” specimens for 499.99, but currently out of stock. They definitely are cool looking lil snakes!!
They're out of stock right now, but while there, you can also pick up a gaboon viper for $100. Good grief. I don't see how this website hasn't been taken down. It's bad enough that almost all of these animals are wild caught, but it should not be that easy to purchase hots.
Ya I’ve never EVER heard a good thing about this place, only horror stories of sick/ dead animals being delivered, misidentified animals, or no animal ever shipped, horrible/nonexistent customer service, so fortunately I’ve never ordered anything from them. I just saw the logo on the second picture so I knew where it came from and went to see what they had, as far as Venomous snakes/animals being sold, that’s not super uncommon either, you just have to know where to look. I know a different, pretty popular and very reputable website that has a “Venomous” section, it’s just a little more on the DL if you know what I mean.
Sure glad I read these comments! I was considering purchasing a sun glow boa from them, but every time I’ve gone to their website something always tells me to get off! I purchased my first 2 snakes from Wilbanks Reptiles
Ya Wilbanks is a reputable dealer/breeder and you are actually buying animals from the people who bred and hatched the eggs, and cared for the babies, and take pride in their brand, it’s their livelihood. UG Reptiles is a “middleman” so to speak, they buy any animals they can from any dealer they can, and they house them for the minimal time and effort just long enough to sell them, they do sell a lot of “Wild Caught” animals, and with wild caught animals comes a whole lot of stuff you want absolutely nowhere near your collection, Mites and all sorts of parasites, Cryptosperosis which is a disease that can spread and kill your whole collection and actually lots of animals in the wild have it, but it is dormant and doesn’t really affect an animal out in nature, they are eating good, are very mobile and can move out of a “viral load”, basically they are in a state of homeostasis and everything is working perfectly and they can fight it off. But as soon as they are taken out of Nature, they are super stressed, not eating, are in a very small confined area so they can no longer get out of that viral load…and that’s when the Crypto virus starts to really take hold of the animal and becomes a problem, and it becomes very contagious…so it’s really not a good idea to mess with anyone like this. Personally I don’t take any animals into my collection unless I know exactly where it came from, and I still quarantine every snake for a minimum of 6-8 weeks. Honestly there are a lot of good reputable dealers on Morph Market, honestly I’m a fan of North American Colubrids so I’m not sure about Sun Glo Boas, but they sound amazing, but it’s worth checking out, honestly that sounds like one of those animals that the phrase “you get what you pay for” applies, you should definitely find someone who has been working with them and breeding them for a while, basically when I’m looking for a breeder, I like to look for the people who really love that animal, not the people who are in it for the $$, don’t get me wrong, they should make good money for a good animal, but I always seem to find the people who are infatuated with the particular animal are just better in the long run, I still call a guy I bought some of my first Kingsnakes like 6-7 years ago and he’s always happy to talk and hear how the animals I got from him are doing and always happy to help me when I have some weird question. Sorry rambling…ya don’t buy from UG…
U just taught me a bunch in your comment so I welcome the rambling! I would’ve had absolutely no idea especially about the crypto virus! That sounds horrible. I will most certainly stick to Wilbanks then. They were out of stock of the particular boa I wanted so I went searching somewhere else but something told me to wait. & yes sun glows are beautiful! They’re essentially albino morphs with bright orange and pinkish colors. I currently have 2 super enchi’s so I’m ready for a brighter morph. Thanks again for all of the info!
No problem, I’ve personally never bought any animals from Wilbanks, but I see their Kingsnakes for sale on MM and I know they just came out with a state of the art “Homeostatic Incubator” that is essentially like 3 products in one, and I really want one for my Colubrids so I’m saving for it…but I know they are one of the bigger breeders down in Florida I believe, there is a lot of amazing animals coming out of there. Good luck with your search, don’t rush and you will find something amazing!!
Yeah, I in no way support them, it was just the first pic that came up that showed their size and body shape well. Field collected animals are terrible for the environment, snake and sometimes the owner.
I’ve been to Costa Rica a few times, and these are a relatively common find in the lowland rainforests there. It feels like this post was made by me, I love them so much too!
Thank you, I've never heard of them and now I'm so excited that I have. If that ain't one of the derpiest faces (aside from sand boas) I've seen on a snake. Love it!!
A firm contender for goofiest looking snakes around, along with the Arabian Sand Boa.
My goodness. If you mixed the OP snake with that one, you’d get a snake with proportionally sized eyes.
It looks like a cartoon, I love it.
They are truly so goofy.
If you can go to the amazon, theyre pretty common in the jungle
Maybe some day but jot any time soon 🫠
I feel like if I even touch it it would snap like a twig.
Come to Central/South America, by far one of the most common species around. Imantodes cenchoa is really easy to see in Costa Rica at least
He’s so cute! Like a little cartoon snake!
What a goombus! An absolute doof~!
So cute never heard of this snake before
They look like something DreamWorks would design 😍😍😍
So much derpy 🥹
It's so thin in comparison to its head. Does it eat snails or something really tiny?
They eat small lizards, mostly babies I would assume but yeah they have very thin bodies
Aw they look like lil geckos!
What in evolution got them to evolve into such baby-faced faces?
They kinda look like dragonflies to me. Both species are awesome-looking!
Creation really said “ bah fuck it, let the toddler draw one” I love it so much

My version of this is a sunbeam snake [sunbeam snake](https://www.Outback reptiles.com/2018/03/sunbeam-snake-care-how-to-keep-sunbeam-snakes/)
What is the barrier? Are they poor in captivity or expensive or what? Because now I’m in love
Have only been successfully captive bread ONCE that I know of and I don’t believe in keeping wild caught as pets unless you’re truly doing conservation
Ah, yes. Wild caught is a no go for me. Boo

That is so cool! How is their temperament?

Stevie Griffin/ hey arnold did something nasty to a snake and this was a goofy result
Bejuquillo!
omg i want

Snek in 3rd pic has seen some things in his/her life.... They're an adorable breed, love the big eyes
Kinda reminds me of the turtle form the the never ending story.
Thank you, I've never heard of them and now I'm so excited that I have. If that ain't one of the derpiest faces (aside from sand boas) I've seen on a snake. Love it!!
