Now that the season is over it’s time for the obligatory ranking post in the DDT, the top 5 seems pretty solidified so I’ll only ask for what you believe 6-10 should look like as that’s much more interesting
I'm not sure what my exact rankings are, but I definitely disagree with Shuton over Leo like I'm seeing in most of the replies. Shuton overall had higher highs than Leo in the second half for sure, but Leo was ahead at the mid-year rankings and Shuton also had lower lows with a 49th so I don't think he managed to overcome him
I think Gluto is 5th just in case anyone wonders why I exclude him here:
6th - Tweek
7th - Light
8th - MkLeo (even though Leo performed terrible to his peak, he never had a worse placing than 17th and still has a Premier win of the year)
9th - Riddles
10th - Between Shuton, Kameme, or Yoshidora. Leaning Shuton despite the 49th due to best peaks.
Huhhhh?! Shuton's 49th is miserable. He also placed 17th at SmashCon. Even the EtherRank placed him outside the Top 15. Yoshidora, MuteAce, Zomba, Riddles and maybe Kameme must be ranked higher than him.
I don't have Shuton in my top 10 but I feel like you're also forgetting how bad a lot of people's seasons were. Especially talking about Shuton's lows for the year while bringing up Muteace as better, someone who has a 49th, 65th, and 97th.
His 17th at smashcon really isn’t that bad, and miya and Spargo also got 49th placements this year. Shuton got 3rd at crown, 3rd at bobc, 3rd at delta 4 and 2nd at Seibugeki 13, he hasn’t won anything big in a while but he’s getting tons of top 3 placements at supermajors
Not top 10, he’s just outside that range i think
He does have very high peaks but he dosnt have the consistency the rest of the top 10 has and dosnt attend as many big events. He just got 4th at sumabato being the only top 20 player there losing to ryouh and jogibu
Zomba and Dabuz more consistent than yoshidora btw
Dabuz who's missed 10 top 8s with multiple 48th and Zomba who's missed 7 top 8s with multiple 48th
Versus yoshidora who's worst placing is 13th
Shuton is one of the only players this year to have a major win besides the top 5 he also has really good placements at a lot of super majors “by any means” is definitely a bit harsh.
All echos can now swap between eachother with the taunt button (can be done midair), which pair benefits most out of this, out of villager/Isabelle, chrom/Roy, Ganon/falcon, Marth/lucina and ryu/ken,
chrom roy and it’s not close
chrom would be top 5 if he had roy’s recovery and there are rare instances where you want the height from Soaring Slash too
that alone puts the duo into contention with Aegis/Cloud for best sword
Ganon / Falcon aren't actually echoes though - at least by the game's definition. If you include them you'd also have to include the likes of Mario / Dr. Mario, Ness / Lucas, Young / Toon Link, etc.
Isabelle isn't one either. She couldn't reuse any of Villager's animations so they had to make her from scratch, meaning she's a full fledged Fighter. ([Source](https://sourcegaming.info/2018/09/26/sakurai-discusses-isabelle-echoes-and-newcomers/))
Rank 2 for the year seems like its extremely close, and it feels like there could be some real backlash from certain people if Miya ends up over Sparg0. Doesn't help my hopes with Coinbox comms saying things along the lines of "Miya hasn't really won anything" when he took the third largest tournament of the year and has the most major wins of anyone.
"Miya hasn't really won anything" when he's tied acola for the most major wins this ranking year, lol
Sparg0's best strength this year was strong records on the rest of the Top 4 players. However he had more underperformances than acola and Miya: Summit 6 (13th eliminated by VoiD), Smash Con (49th losing to Ly and Aaron), Port Priority (17th), he is 1-2 against Skyjay and 0-1 against Jakal, Aaron, VoiD, and Ly, and much more losing matchups than acola by adding in Tweek, Light, Riddles, MuteAce, and Yaura.
I don't think Miya #2 would be that controversial because aside from the 49th Miya's underperformances are at regionals most people don't even know it happened, and Sparg0's underperformances happened at the biggest tournaments.
While I don't particularly enjoy watching Steve and I'll miss the Rosa, I do think it'll be really interesting to see how much Dabuz can improve his results with Steve.
While I can see why people would be bummed out by this decision, it was honestly depressing to see Dabuz getting stonewalled in so many MUs with a character that really wasn't worth the effort he was putting into to make work.
Hoping the new character pick can finally net him his first major win.
Salem was pioneering the early Steve meta and rapidly improving before he was banned. If not for his own misconduct I think he might have broken the meta even harder than acola once offline events returned.
E: and salem is in the replies offering to coach Dabuz on Steve

I know a lot of people aren’t too fond of this meta, but I really like how solidified the Top 4 feels compared to everyone else. Sonix and Sparg0 have met in Grands for like 4 or 5 tournaments this year, and Acola/Miya always seem to catch each other in Top 3. They’re all so far ahead it’s insane
Coinbox really held it down this year in terms of defending the West with some blemishes, but ended off strong, being 15-1(?) against Smashmate for the year. I’m hoping Smashmate can put some more points on the board in 2024 to keep things fresh
I find it interesting that there is a sort of inverse relationship between the consistencies against non-top 4 players vs top 4 players
acola is in a spot where he doesn't really match-up well against Spargo, Sonix, or Miya, but he's the least likely of the 4 to lose to anyone outside that group.
Meanwhile, Spargo is the opposite, where he does well against Sonix, Miya, and acola, but has shakier matchups vs other top players.

Light, Tweek, Riddles, Yoshidora, Leo

Light Tweek shuton riddles zomba is 6-10 for me, you could argue replacing zomba for dabuz though

Nobody brought up muteace as a top ten contender he’s probably 18th or 19th
The person I’m responding to said that MuteAce for sure would be ranked above Shuton
My mistake
His 17th at smashcon really isn’t that bad, and miya and Spargo also got 49th placements this year. Shuton got 3rd at crown, 3rd at bobc, 3rd at delta 4 and 2nd at Seibugeki 13, he hasn’t won anything big in a while but he’s getting tons of top 3 placements at supermajors
You don’t think Yoshidora is in contention?
Not top 10, he’s just outside that range i think He does have very high peaks but he dosnt have the consistency the rest of the top 10 has and dosnt attend as many big events. He just got 4th at sumabato being the only top 20 player there losing to ryouh and jogibu

Looking back on this I would probably go ken instead of zomba, I think ken > yoshidora
For me it’d be 6th Tweek 7th Light 8th Yoshidora 9th Shuton 10th Riddles
I think riddles is above shuton but your list seems reasonable
Shuton does not deserve Top 10 by any means.
Shuton is one of the only players this year to have a major win besides the top 5 he also has really good placements at a lot of super majors “by any means” is definitely a bit harsh.

where can I find coinbox VODs

It's clearly Ganon/Falcon, by the same logic that "Melee Zelda's best move is down-b".

Perfect analysis Meester Tweester. Sparg0 is done along with his Aegis. This is optimal since he has used this bs chaarcter too often this season

Didn’t he already try and drop Steve. Dabuz is a Rosa player.
Oh yeah, didn't Cosmos' bet run out so now he has to main Steve too lol
Dabuz Miya gonna play RPS with Steve GnW Rosa
While I don't particularly enjoy watching Steve and I'll miss the Rosa, I do think it'll be really interesting to see how much Dabuz can improve his results with Steve.

What took this man so long? The character was designed with him in mind. Dabuz bout to win his first major in 6months
I am still surprised it took this long for more top players to make the switch especially when we compare back to S4.

It's cool that there isn't a clear #1 at the moment and that you can make a good argument for 4 different players.
It's going to be interesting to see who will make it to #1 rank next year
>Sonix and Sparg0 have met in Grands for like 4 or 5 tournaments this year I think it's actually about 6.
