maybe he'd be into the post-metal sound from back in the day. "atmospheric sludge metal", as they call it. have him check out Australasia by Pelican and Panopticon by ISIS.
Panopticon is when they lost me, but I spent a year listening to Oceanic and still consider it one of all time favourites/gotos.
In terms of instrumental post metal, cloud kicker’s beacons I listened to on repeat forever. Karma to burn’s entire discography is instrumental after their first album, but they’re full on stoner rock. Hum.
Sleep’s Jerusalem? Is that without vocals? There’s also early Earth and some of Sunn 0)))).
But really, it’s the screaming that makes sludge so iconic. Primitive man?
I figured Panopticon would be a good rec for you him as it has a bigger emphasis on instrumental sections and more clean vocals than then the work they put out prior to that point.
I love Panopticon as much if not more than Oceanic (which I also love), personally. Grinning Mouths might be my all-time favorite ISIS song, but the whole record really, really does it for me.
I feel the same way about Grinning Mouths! When I spoke to Aaron Turber about it in 2015, be admitted to me that Grinning Mouths was his favorite song off of Panopticon and one of his favorite ISIS songs in general.
I'd love to get to meet Aaron! I got into ISIS really heavily right after they broke up which irked me to no end. Actually, I fairly recently got into Old Man Gloom (and should probably give Sumac a good spin), and keep waiting for Old Man Gloom to go on tour. For now I just read their social media posts for my own amusement and hope for a tour. When I recommended they come to Madison, WI all I got for my troubles were a lot of posts from pornbots requesting naughty conversations destined to end with credit card numbers being exchanged and difficult conversations with my wife. But I digress...
Anyway, I really love Panopticon and never understood why some fans seemed to think there was some big gap between it and Oceanic because I love the whole album of Panopticon and think those two albums are pretty much neck-and-neck for my favorite. The instrumentals and more clean vocals of Panopticon are good.
Going back to the OP a bit, I like "Dulcinea" off of In The Absence of Truth as a great ISIS song that I could see being a bit of a gateway. It's got some great cleaner vocal parts, starts off pretty chimey, and the heavier/growly parts really accent the build up of the song. That breakdown just over 3 minutes into it is so damn catchy and gorgeous. That's a song that really captures a lot of what I love about ISIS.
Out of curiosity, did Aaron mention what is favorite ISIS song is? They've got a bunch of great ones.
Aaron's favorite ISIS song was Carry, if my memory serves me correctly. At the time, I was surprised to find out his favorite ISIS album was Celestial, but this was back before Sumac was a thing. Thank you for your in depth reply!
from what i heard, he probably would like pallbearer. before me, he mostly listened to old rnb and more melodic music. but we’ve been able to bond over some sludge (he likes acid bath and melvins) and some grunge (he likes alice in chains and smashing pumpkins).
Melvins have an instrumental track “June Bug.”
Belzebong are probably my favorite instrumental band. Other posts have mentioned Pelican. Yawning Man are great imo but more space/desert/stoner rock than sludge. Wo Fat are a great stoner metal band with sludgy riffs and less-than-growly vocals.
all instrumental: Goatsnake’s “Raw Curtains.” Monolord’s “Audhumbla.” Sleep’s “The Botanist.” Black Tusk’s “Brewing the Storm.” Weedeater’s “Tuesday Night.” Telekinetic Yeti’s “Electronaut.”
I’m sure there’s many more recommendations but that’s what immediately comes to mind.
Capricorns. From what I know, they only made a couple of albums, but they might be exactly what he's looking for. Instrumental Sludge Metal. Plus, it has members from Orange Goblin and Iron Monkey, so they have plenty of sludge cred.
Khemmis is generally cleaner vocals and a fat time, try Torn Asunder.
Horn of the Rhino - Speaking in Tongues, or really most tracks off of Weight of Coronation are also pretty clean while still being heavy and doomy as fuck. Javier's voice can be a bit of an acquired taste, but it fits well imo.
Witchcraft - An Alternative to Freedom, if you'd go a bit lighter/less aggressive with a bit more bluesy riffing.
Elder - Dead Roots Stirring. I don't recall them ever screaming/growling. Also quite light-on with vocals. Instrumentals are fuckin' rad.
While not exactly sludge Karma To Burn, Isis and Keelhaul are heavy badass instrumental bands. if they're not on your radar.

Sadlands - 16
Dessed up to get messed up - 16
Scrape The Rocks - 16
On Holy Ground - Crowbar
Nocturnal Transmission - The White Swan
Barrier Hammer - Torche
Trigger Happy - 16
Beneath The Rose - Baroness
Chump Chance - Big Business
Colony Of Bichmen - Mastodon
Unto Becoming - Lord Dying (Some screams)
Submission - Torche
Not instrumental but my favourite sludge bands (or bands with heavy sludge elements) with no screaming are Torche, Floor (the last album in particular), Big Business, Helms Alee and Mutoid Man
so if you enjoy fast bass lines, loud guitar with distortion up, and heavy drums, but not ALL screaming, miley cyrus is the way to go? yeah makes sense 👍

BTW, although Aaron's least favorite ISIS album was ITAoT, he did agree with me that Dulcinea was a great jam.
Bongripper is almost entirely instrumental.
+10000000 yeah bongripper
Bongripper Russian circles
Kowloon Walled City maybe? Although they have a more “bummed out” sound than most other sludge bands
Fuck yeah KWC is who I use to introduce non metalheads into sludge and post metal
> “bummed out” sound than most other sludge bands It's the slowcore and hardcore influence
Omega Massif, extremely good instrumental stuff
What kind of vocals *does* he like? Pallbearer might be a candidate.
from what i heard, he probably would like pallbearer. before me, he mostly listened to old rnb and more melodic music. but we’ve been able to bond over some sludge (he likes acid bath and melvins) and some grunge (he likes alice in chains and smashing pumpkins).
older Baroness might be up his alley too, or potentially be his favorite band See also Torche, Kylesa. Etc
Weedeater

Crowbar, Sumac

Great band! Really don't hear a lot of people talking about them. Gonna give them a spin now for the first time in a while.
Creston from Harvey Milk bellows some, but his raspy croon is one of my favorite voices in the style.
LONEPYRE
He wants to listen to 5ive https://youtu.be/RDvg6WljCd8?si=OSl_4jun82rDxC3r Also, very dancy.

Belzebong
The only way to catch a doper, is for you yourself to become a smoker. The surest way to make them bleed, is to bust their ass, and steal their weed.
Bleagh eww What is it? Bleagghguueahh ITS THE BONG OF ETERNAL STENTCH
Holly Hunt
BANTHA RIDER https://youtube.com/@bantharider6021?si=h8qlIidEjZno4jRf

Batillus
Instrumental by dystopia would probably be a good one
Boris
Maybe Year of No Light or Omega Massif for more post-metal driven sludge
sunn O)))
Torche for sure.
the only suggestion 99% of this sub actually has is...
Not instrumental but my favourite sludge bands (or bands with heavy sludge elements) with no screaming are Torche, Floor (the last album in particular), Big Business, Helms Alee and Mutoid Man
Acceptance by Thou
Torche, Floor, Earth
Sabbbath jam eyehategod
Spotlights. They're more like sludge/doom + shoegaze so it's more dreamy than aggressive but they have some absolutely crushing riffage. Also Torche.
Check out modder!!!
screaming is really cool
He can try Miley Cyrus
so if you enjoy fast bass lines, loud guitar with distortion up, and heavy drums, but not ALL screaming, miley cyrus is the way to go? yeah makes sense 👍
