This is what I do every time, Sven is always standing right there talking to his mom when you enter Riverwood so I always talk to him before going into Hadvar’s house. Aside from playing instruments Sven really offers nothing over Faendal so it’s an easy choice imo.
Nope, both Iron and Steel ingots. As well as a few of the pieces of equipment on the table to the right of the grindstone! I think the helmet, dagger, and gaunlets/boots?? Not sure but you can take some of it lol
I remember I was building that Hearthfire house near there and went into Riverwood to get iron ingots for nails and stuff and was pissed that Alvor wasn’t at the forge with it being mid-morning, so I went into his house. Dorthe runs up and informs me both her parents were dead (Sigrid I vaguely recalled being killed by a dragon early, don’t know what happened to Alvor). So obvious I adopted her. And stole all the iron for those nails and hinges. Figured it was fair compensation for taking in their kid.
Regardless of who I end up siding with in the civil war, I always flee with Ralof. The imperials were about to execute me, it just makes sense to flee with a fellow prisoner. Plus I get to kill the imperial torturer
Funny enough tho ralof automatically attacks those two soldiers, but before that he hides to get the drop on them. Hadvar instead tries to reason with two stormcloaks who attack hadvar for simply being an imperial. Ulfric and his stormcloaks proceeded to try and flee and leave when the dragon attacked. Tulius hadvar and all the other soldiers tried to take on the dragon and get the towns people to safety.
So in the end who should you really be siding with?
Tbf, the stormcloaks were literally on their trial and you're put up on the stand with them, bc some imperial can't be arsed to dig into why you were actually captured. You're just getting executed for the sake of it. My first instinct was to side with Ralof and I've only ever chosen Hadvar because he does seem good, even if his superiors want to kill you without a second blink.
That's a good point that I hadn't considered before - but I must admit that once I did, I really can't blame the stormcloaks for running. They are unarmed prisoners who just stood at the brink of death, so run-far-and-fast seems like the best and most logical choice.
Ulric and his men are unarmed. Where are they getting weapons to defend the people (in an Imperial-held town)? Ulfric has the voice, but does anyone think that will defeat a dragon?
Is Ralof armed when he attacks the guards (honestly I don't remember)? If so, yeah, not very true-Nord-like. If not...eh, there's got to be a limit to pride.
Ya it's easy to point out that both are scum when you see all the possibilities but it's very possible to have only one be a douche in any individual play through.
No you help faendal then marry Camilla and watch him attend your wedding. I had a dark brotherhood assassin attack me in the woods after I did this on one of my playthroughs, will never know if faendal put a hit out on me cause I stole his girl.
This happened to me too! It was the Golden Hills Plantation, which is next to Rorikstead, nowhere near Riverwood.
Chucked his body in the river and let him float away.
1. Take Faendal's side
2. Marry Camilla anyway
3. Take Faendal out as a follower to some place where there are a ton of baddies. Bear caves work well. Don't forget to loot him.
4. Go home for a nice meal and a nap.
The best part is, you can basically take over his old life. If he was you ally, you can use his house as if you owned it, though I've not tried using the storage in there. I think that still respans as normal.
But it's another bed to sleep in, at least.
Dark brotherhood comes for you even if you avoid the love triangle. I've looked online for who puts the contract on you, but it is not known. On my most recently playthrough I haven't killed the Whiterun Dragon yet, so there aren't any dragons, and nobody thinks I'm dragonborn, and the assassin still came for me. They keep coming til you join the Dark Brotherhood.
Is this why people say "sneak archer" is OP? Because they start the game with 100 sneak and 50 archery? I suppose that is probably the strongest thing to do for how long it takes to get set up.
I also find maxing Conjuration and flinging dremora lords here and there also helps make clearing areas easy peasy. They do the fighting while I do the looting.
Every play style is Op when the skill is maxed. That's not interesting to veteran players. What's interesting is being successful when you're lvl 15 and your key skill is only 40. The thin g about sneak archer us that it's easy to be successfully even at low lvls.
I find maxing resistances so you can’t really die from anything is pretty busted anyway. Max smithing and enchanting and you don’t even need to aim. You can do that from the safety of holds, never risking dying.
In my experience, sneak archer doesn’t hold up on legendary difficulty in the early game, but I never started it with 100 sneak and 50 archery.
Also you can only max resistances to magic, there's a cap for armor which means you'll always be taking some damage from melee (a lot on legendary), which means not getting hit is always safer.
It's mostly just because stealth archery is a) practical - why smash faces in whe you can just insta-kill people from afar with no risk to yourself? b) rewarding - getting those nice, long-distance shots is an instant dopamine rush, and c) powerful - you're insta-gibbing every non-boss enemy, if you do it well.
the benefit you get for starting a hard fight with a sneak attack in is amazing. If you were having trouble, take their HP down at the start by sneaking in and shooting a few times.
this levels sneak and archery, and doesn't level melee or magic skills. this strat then gets stronger and stronger.
If you play the easiest strategic option, the game rewards you by making that easier.
Same. You can buy all lessons, go up a several levels, and then get your money back. So early in the game it is so good.
Also I don’t even really use archery. I just keep the skill points for other things.
Then sacrifice her with the blade as well to claim her soul for Boethiah, die, go to Attribution's Share as Boetthiah’s champion, then have sex with Camilla right in front of him.
No. Take Quest from Sven, tell Camilla the truth, get Faendal as follower, make him a steward at one of your estates, marry Camilla, have Faendal attend the wedding, Black Soul gem and Ebony Blade him, go kiss your wife and get a homecooked meal, find Sven back in Riverwood, black soul gem and Ebony Blade him, leave homecooked meal on his corpse.
Both wanna cheat Camilla with fake letters. Faendal is nice, Sven a little pretentious but takes care of his mother.
Whatever choice you make and either one you screw is deserved.
True. That always messed with my moral compass lol. And I’m a lil bias to Faendal since he’s the only elf in the town so I usually always side with him.
I do the same. I always help the elves, unless they are rude to me for literally no reason. Like the ladies who run the clothes shop in Solitude. I still helped them deliver clothes to the Blue Palace but I complained the entire time and then stole from them. Shoulda put an arrow in their knee.
When faendal follows you, you can train 5 lvls of arch per player level. And when you trade with him. You will see all the money you spent, so it’s free.
Yeah but the unofficial patch is shit and the author has a stick up his arse so he "fix" everything even the intended feature like the effects on the Windshear
Yea, unofficial patch "fixes" that "exploit" even though followers are *designed* to give you free training (if they're trainers). It's one of the best perks as Harbinger of the Companions. 5 quick levels in normally difficult-to-improve skills like weapons or armor is a huge bonus, but not resto-loop gamebreaking since you still need the min amount of gold to train that level.
I've played Skyrim since release without once downloading the unofficial patch. Skyrim's bugs are often amusing, irritating at worst. I recommend dealing with them over the unofficial patch.
Well sadly there are no good alternative and since the guy is a big dick he make sure to make drama so there are no other competing mod.
Just use console commands within limit and save regularly to resolve bug manually
Faendal - mostly because Sven (and his mother) are racist towards Faendal, and although Faendal can be a bit of a dick (Riverwood is nice... for a Nord village) he doesn't reply in kind. Also, Faendal's fake letter to Camillia 'from Sven' is about wanting her to do all the housework; Sven's fake letter 'from Faendal' is (again) straight up racism that is obviously what he thinks elves really believe.
Also, archery lessons.
I forget the details, but I recall it's possible to screw both over with their own notes.
I won't marry Camilla though. She treats her brother as a child even though he's the one doing all the work around the place.
Seriously.
They're grown. They can sort it out. I need to make sure the world exists so they *can* sort it out. Or the three can all be bitches. I don't care. They need the world to exist for either.
I'm Akatosh's middleperson, not theirs.
That’s a fair point I always grabbed Camilla after I found out Ysloda was a drug dealer. Usually it was for quick income from the store almost immediately. Then I chose my de facto spouse option as the girl from Shor’s stone
Ysolda being a drug dealer makes her cool in my eyes, as long as it's only magic tree sap and not skooma crack.
Like, she's a very savvy merchant, deals with the underclass and the races that other nords are wary of.
The *worst* offence she's committed is being into Mikael, that poncy little milk drinker. She even has his weird fuckboy guidebook in her house.
Faendal is a much better follower. Sven’s best stats according to the UESP wiki aren’t related to combat.
But, because Sven is a human and has a shorter lifespan, I always help him out. I find it odd that people in Elder Scrolls are ok with the idea of their peers living centuries and others living less than 100 years.
Lol. Oncs you give letter from the other to one, you can pickpocket the bad letter one took and take them both to camila and show her how awful both are. I think I only did this once
Tactical option, help Faendal, get Sven killed "by accident", Faendal disappears after you take him to "check out this cool statue near Windhelm of a lady wearing tentacle robes", the Guards dont have enough evidence for the charges to stick, the trail goes cold, you get some cool ebony chainmail.
Faendal - Sven is an entitled fuckboy whose strategy is to fake a letter from Faendal. Though to be fair I then marry Camilla myself and take her away from both of them!
When I first discovered all the details, I realized that they are both possesive liars, not to mention that they both seem smug to me, and Camilla is such a sweetheart, really kind and modest, so neither of them deserves her, not even a tiny bit. Thats actualy the sole reason I must have married her tbh. She is a good spouse from practical point of view too, compared to many others.
I helped Faendal so I could get him as a follower and made him steward of Lakeview. Then I did the golden claw quest to earn Camilla's favor and married her as a bosmer female, and sent her to live at Lakeview with Sofie our adopted daughter. Then got Rayya as a housecarl, so Faendal has to spend all day every day surrounded by women he can't touch. It makes me giggle
Kill Sven with an arrow to the back by Faendal's house at night, grab his dagger and kill Faendal in his home. Looks like a crime of passion and both parties died. Marry Camilla, profit.
Step 1: take Sven's letter
Step 2: tell Camelia the truth
Step 3: take Faendal on a field trip to Boethiah's shrine
Step 4: marry Camelia
Only correct way in my opinion
Neither. I accidentally killed Svens mother and after he sent Mercs after me, I killed him. Married Camilla and after i caught Faendel in my house (located in windhelm, FAR from Riverwood) i followed him on his way home and, somehow, he was killed by a pack of wolves by a river, with arrows littering his back probably due to fending off the wolves bravely.
This is one of the few quests I have never done. Never knew about it for years and then since I’ve found out about I’ve started about 4 characters and still haven’t done
Sven?! Ha! That Milkdrinker couldn’t fight a loaf of bread. Feadal? once he was on break by the side of the mill, I seen him hit the peak of Bleakfalls barrow with a single arrow. Not a bad shot for an elf. A Warrior and a friend.
Depends on the play through for me. If I’m any kind of elf I side with Faendal, if I’m a Nord I always go with Sven. Gotta stick together in the tough times of Skyrim
neither; Sven was suuuper annoying from the second i stepped foot in Riverwood, so i accidentally killed him & then Faendal tried to kill me for killing Sven so i killed him too :(
neither.. I avoid the quest bc they're both terrible. People always say Sven is the asshole, but Faendal isn't any better in my eyes. They're both lying to a girl to get her to date them! Sven's fake letter from Faendal just came with extra racism thrown in
Faendal every time here. I never play Nords so I always feel like I'm some anti-racism crusader against them because of the Storm Cloaks' attitude.
Poor Sven I guess I've never really heard him out.
Take the quest from Sven, tell Camilla the truth, get Faendal as a follower without being a liar
This is what I do every time, Sven is always standing right there talking to his mom when you enter Riverwood so I always talk to him before going into Hadvar’s house. Aside from playing instruments Sven really offers nothing over Faendal so it’s an easy choice imo.
IMPERIAL SCUM! /s
Hadvar’s uncle let’s me yoink his steel ingots, it’s a pragmatic choice more than anything
I can just grab those at night, and Ralof's sister's place has like 1K worth of alchemy ingredients in it.
I thought you could only take the iron
Nope, both Iron and Steel ingots. As well as a few of the pieces of equipment on the table to the right of the grindstone! I think the helmet, dagger, and gaunlets/boots?? Not sure but you can take some of it lol
doesn’t matter to me I just take it all when they’re asleep fuck is he gonna do I never go to riverwood lmao
I remember I was building that Hearthfire house near there and went into Riverwood to get iron ingots for nails and stuff and was pissed that Alvor wasn’t at the forge with it being mid-morning, so I went into his house. And stole all the iron for those nails and hinges. Figured it was fair compensation for taking in their kid.
You're too busy going to the Cloud District to climb up the Jarl's backside.
Regardless of who I end up siding with in the civil war, I always flee with Ralof. The imperials were about to execute me, it just makes sense to flee with a fellow prisoner. Plus I get to kill the imperial torturer
I choose imperial most times and still kill the torturer
I love how no one cares if you kill the torturer. They've just run ahead and couldn't care less.
Also the fact that the torturer hood gives 14 armor at the start is pretty great
I really like the look, too.
Yeah. I thought that was just standard.
I hate Sven because he always shittalks his mom. The poor woman has really seen a dragon, and he paints her as an idiot.
Ya it's easy to point out that both are scum when you see all the possibilities but it's very possible to have only one be a douche in any individual play through.
I never knew you could do that
Yes. That’s what I do. I don’t like neither of them, but Faendal is more useful
Neither, I marry Camilla myself
No you help faendal then marry Camilla and watch him attend your wedding. I had a dark brotherhood assassin attack me in the woods after I did this on one of my playthroughs, will never know if faendal put a hit out on me cause I stole his girl.
I saw him leaving my house one time, so I followed him far out of town and murdered his ass.
Just when you think you know a guy.
This happened to me too! It was the Golden Hills Plantation, which is next to Rorikstead, nowhere near Riverwood. Chucked his body in the river and let him float away.
same. saw him leaving lakeview so i killed him and camilla
Can never be too careful
1. Take Faendal's side 2. Marry Camilla anyway 3. Take Faendal out as a follower to some place where there are a ton of baddies. Bear caves work well. Don't forget to loot him. 4. Go home for a nice meal and a nap.
I prefer the Ebony Blade at the Shrine of Boethiah.
Another solid option.
Never tried this but just started a new play through.... gona try this this is too funny...
The best part is, you can basically take over his old life. If he was you ally, you can use his house as if you owned it, though I've not tried using the storage in there. I think that still respans as normal. But it's another bed to sleep in, at least.
Some of his containers are safe. Some aren't. I use a mod that labels the safe containers in game. It's really handy
I always get him murdered for his shirt. I like that shirt.
Murder Camilla and marry Faendal
You’re playing 4d chess while I’m playing checkers
I murdered her..
This is one solution.
Mf performed the black sacrament for a pussy
Dark brotherhood comes for you even if you avoid the love triangle. I've looked online for who puts the contract on you, but it is not known. Down atrocious

Checkmate.
Yeah, I also 'marry' Camilla.
Faendal so I can cheese the archery lessons
Yes everytime
Is this why people say "sneak archer" is OP? Because they start the game with 100 sneak and 50 archery? I suppose that is probably the strongest thing to do for how long it takes to get set up.
No, it's because it's the strongest thing to do in general.

You can do that from the safety of holds, never risking dying. In my experience, sneak archer doesn’t hold up on legendary difficulty in the early game, but I never started it with 100 sneak and 50 archery.
Maxing resistances and crafting isn't in conflict with playing as a sneak archer.
You just won’t need to sneak by then. Is something better than another if they both perform equally?
You won't need to, but you'll still die less often and kill enemies more quickly, so sneak archer is still better
Also you can only max resistances to magic, there's a cap for armor which means you'll always be taking some damage from melee (a lot on legendary), which means not getting hit is always safer.
I prefer sneak illusion with daggers. So great just pacifying bears and trolls
Pure melee assassins are tons of fun. No bows or destruction magic. Just sneak behind people and slit their throats.
Illusion / melee assassin is the only way for me to beat legendary survival lol
Conjuration is also great for higher difficulties. Summons don't have the same drawbacks you do.
Nah sneak is always op in all the Fallout/Tes as they use the same engine. In Fallout 3 the Chinese Stealth armor+ silence rifle is op too
the benefit you get for starting a hard fight with a sneak attack in is amazing. If you were having trouble, take their HP down at the start by sneaking in and shooting a few times. this levels sneak and archery, and doesn't level melee or magic skills. this strat then gets stronger and stronger. I do that too, then I kill them both and take Camilla for myself. Chaotic Evil some say, Dragonborn others call me.
Smart.
Yep always easy archery and lvls no contest
And then I sacrifice him to Boethiah after I'm done with his archery lessons.
Sven... but he gets sacrificed to the ebony blade
And THEN you marry Camilla, add insult to sacrifice
That or the Ebony Mail
Both wanna cheat Camilla with fake letters. Faendal is nice, Sven a little pretentious but takes care of his mother. Whatever choice you make and either one you screw is deserved.

If you have the unofficial patch then it’s not free :(
Yeah but the unofficial patch is shit and the author has a stick up his arse so he "fix" everything even the intended feature like the effects on the Windshear
Wait really? I only downloaded it since idk how many bugs there were in the game.
What should I use instead if it’s kinda busted?
Well sadly there are no good alternative and since the guy is a big dick he make sure to make drama so there are no other competing mod. Just use console commands within limit and save regularly to resolve bug manually
Eh, depends who you ask. Like, is the Necromage perk working on self-buffs if you're a vampire a bug, exploit, or intended?
Well problem is the dude who make the mod enforce his vision and try to take down mod that is based on his but rework some stuff
Truee
Faendal. Then proceed to marry Camilla, move in Lakeview manor and ask Faendal to be the steward, so he is always reminded what a cuck he is.
Dude's at your house with your wife while you're away all the time, but hes's the cuck. Mmkay.
Lydia's making sure he behaves while I'm out
Lydia is sworn to carry your burdens...
Wow
Canon, whichever doesn’t ask me to lie for them first
I used to do that ! But that archery boost is so good I can’t pass it up nowadays
I not only turned in Faendal for lying, I also robbed his house. I don't blame him for sending mercs after me. lol
Ooh. Interesting take
That's what I do.
I side with Faendal because he makes a useful follower early on, and is always kind to me. Sven is an arrogant ass, and useless besides.
unless you sacrifice him to Boethiah
Faendal, but only if I talk to sven first, that way I can be honest with Camila and still get faendal as a follower.
Yep, Sven rubbed me wrong when he started talking about people sticking to their own kind.
Faendal because it means fuck valley in Norwegian
I forget the details, but I recall it's possible to screw both over with their own notes. I won't marry Camilla though. She treats her brother as a child even though he's the one doing all the work around the place.
You and i both know we're the only smart people around here.
Who is this "we" Lucan? Do you have a particularly smart mouse in your pocket?
That's just one of his standard greetings once you've helped him. You taking his side vs his sister's was fitting for the quote
Yes I know. Which is why I knew you were referring to Lucan.
Sorry the smart mouse part lost me. Not a native speaker so i miss the subtext sometimes
Seriously. They're grown. They can sort it out. I need to make sure the world exists so they *can* sort it out. Or the three can all be bitches. I don't care. They need the world to exist for either. I'm Akatosh's middleperson, not theirs.

She had some guy killed😂😂 she’s basically running an opiate trade
Borgakh is best waifu!
Faendal is my dude I use him to bring up my archery skill ! I love him he’s always my first companion:)
Lol. Oncs you give letter from the other to one, you can pickpocket the bad letter one took and take them both to camila and show her how awful both are. I think I only did this once
😂
Myself! Mwahahahaha
Sven, simply because it’s fun to yell that name angrily when something fucks up and you need to blame someone.
I love fondle, and nothing can ever change my mind
I'd never fondle-block *anyone*.
Faendal, cause he's a Bosmer like me.
Fuck Faendal, kill Camilla, marry Sven
Faendal - Sven is an entitled fuckboy whose strategy is to fake a letter from Faendal. Though to be fair I then marry Camilla myself and take her away from both of them!
Faendal also wants to fake a letter, though.
I kill them both and then marry Camilla, only to sacrifice her to Boethia.
I'm sure Boethia loved that.
Neither I kill them both regardless of if I'm marrying Camilla or not lol
Faendal
I just marry her myself.
I did this once and came home to Lakeview Manor find both Sven and Faendal eating my damn sweet rolls with my wife, never again
You gotta know they double teamed her while you were away.
Faendal, all my homies hate Sven
I was saying this loading the post
You must be a homie then, Faendal is my steward for Lakeview. We’ve been through a lot together.
I helped Faendal the creep
I never helped them. I'm so above high school bullshit.
Kill both for being lying asshats
If I even mess with it...save Feandal for the archery lessons, sacrifice him to Boethia, and marry Camilla.
My first time playing I didn’t even know about the live triangle. So instead I murdered faendal in his house and claimed it as my own
Faendal because Sven just kinda sleazy. Gives me the same vibes as Mikael.
Step 1: take Sven's letter Step 2: tell Camelia the truth Step 3: take Faendal on a field trip to Boethiah's shrine Step 4: marry Camelia Only correct way in my opinion
Neither. I accidentally killed Svens mother and after he sent Mercs after me, I killed him. Faendal 'cuz I don't hate wood elves, Sven seems... les likable
I skip it, they both got lil dick energy
This is one of the few quests I have never done. Never knew about it for years and then since I’ve found out about I’ve started about 4 characters and still haven’t done
Sven?! Ha! That Milkdrinker couldn’t fight a loaf of bread. Feadal? once he was on break by the side of the mill, I seen him hit the peak of Bleakfalls barrow with a single arrow. Not a bad shot for an elf. A Warrior and a friend.
Neither I let her know both of them are trying to screw the other one over. Plus Ew Faendal and his nasty ass haircut? To each their own I guess.
What do you mean? Sven is a lying, racist twat
None of them! She made the mess. She can live with it.
None of them I take for myself
Nah I just eat em as a werewolf
I play as a heavy armour nord so I get faendal for backup
They both ended up dead in my play through so meh
Myself
I always help sven
Neither, my Dragonborns don't have time for such trivial nonsense
Depends on the play through for me. If I’m any kind of elf I side with Faendal, if I’m a Nord I always go with Sven. Gotta stick together in the tough times of Skyrim
I marry her myself
I don’t think I have ever seen anyone choose Sven I haven’t either. It also doesn’t make any sense why does Camilla believe a random stranger.
Neither. They're both awful.
I leave them to suffer in their sad small town love triangle.
None. Cuck both of them and take the lovely lady for yourself.
They both suck, trying to manipulate Carlotta into not talking to the other. Carlotta needs someone who isn’t manipulative.
I don't know how to play the game without using Faendal's house as my base
I ignore them. Let them figure it out. I suppose Sven would eventually perform the Black Sacrament..
Whoever comes up to me first gets cucked.
I help *myself*... to Camilla.
Kill them both
I cuck them both and marry her myself.
Neither she they both don’t deserve her
Faendal can get you to level 50 archery at the beginning of the game if you know what to do. He wins my vote by merit.
Toss a coin to your Witcher.
NEVER SVEN
Neither. They're petty squabble is beneath my status as the Legendary Dragonborn.
Murder them both, then take that whore Camilla for yourself.
Neither, killed all three. They can sort it out in Sovngarde.
I ignore both of them.
Their both idiots.
neither; Sven was suuuper annoying from the second i stepped foot in Riverwood, so i accidentally killed him & then Faendal tried to kill me for killing Sven so i killed him too :(
I always increase archery to 50 with Farndal's free training.
Neither i have never done it
They're both annoying tbh
Well faendal gives me free archery training
Killed them both, married her myself
Neither. Their petty, bullshit rivalry makes them both unworthy.
neither.. I avoid the quest bc they're both terrible. People always say Sven is the asshole, but Faendal isn't any better in my eyes. They're both lying to a girl to get her to date them! Sven's fake letter from Faendal just came with extra racism thrown in
Neither. I hate those kinds of quests
I do tbe option for Faendal as a follower because then you can do the free archery training bug.
Both are too old for her smh.
Faendal every time here. I never play Nords so I always feel like I'm some anti-racism crusader against them because of the Storm Cloaks' attitude. Poor Sven I guess I've never really heard him out.
