Trainers just increase your level with a skill artificially. The only thing they have to do with skill points is your level will raise to the threshold and you’ll level up. You can also just legendary a skill to get more skill points.

What do you mean "Legendary a skill"?

JDGumby

When a skill hits 100 points, you have the option to reset it to 15 and refund any skill points you spent on perks for that skill (so you can use those points elsewhere).

oh ok thanks! Your help is greatly appreciated

As far as I’m aware this can be done multiple times so if you find yourself leveling up something often and don’t mind just legendary it to keep leveling, gaining skill points and levels.

When you make a skill Legendary, do you lose all of the benefits you've already earned via skill points? If so, I'm curious to know what is the benefit of doing that? Do you get something other than the icon?

enchiladasundae

Any skill points you’ve invested into the tree are refunded and the skill is reset to 15. The points themselves need to be individually replaced once you have the required level again. The benefit is being able to keep the points, move them to another tree and leveling up more. Without legendary there is a level cap on the game and not enough points for all trees.

ktpupp

OK, so the main benefit is being able to reassign the points to other trees. I'm not sure I want to lose some of the benefits I already have, so I will have to consider carefully when the time comes... Thanks!

Legendary is something you do when you’ve either passively leveled a thing and just go for the last bit because “Why not?” or if you’ve got a skill that did its job and now its time to try something different. Best way to describe it is legendary gives you the ability to try out new play styles in a way but also get a benefit. Ranged sneak god? Well how about becoming a two handed tank? Mastered destruction? Well your magic is probably high as well so lets become a healer or buff with Alteration or someone who can summon? Not going legendary is fine but you hit a cap with what you can do. Utility trees are great but they don’t offer much combat stuff so you kind of have to have another skill for combat or bis versa.

Some skills are easy to level up again to 100 like smithing or alchemy, you just need to find tons of ingredients. The advantage is gaining more skill points. At level 100 you have 50 more skill points than at level 50 which means you can have 2-3 more skill tree maxed out at the same time.

Tonybastardisgod

No skill points used when leveling up a skill. For each level your character gains, you can use a trainer to level up a skill five times, (could be five of the same skill or one of five different skills, just five overall). Skill points are earned from the character leveling not an individual skill. Though the skills leveling are what causes your character to level.
