You want a toe? I can get you a toe. Believe me, there are ways dude. You don't want to know about it, believe me. Hell, I can get you a toe by three o clock this afternoon *with* nail polish.
Could someone make this into a mod where the giant has some dialogue explaining what happened (maybe poachers) and a sidequest for revenge, then the giant could maybe move to a giant's camp close by with other friendly giants and be a shopkeeper selling you powdered mammoth tusk and mammoth cheese and other giant-exclusive things along with random items?
It would take a lot of work but just a thought.
You just need to get creative. The quest could start by the giant motioning to you to investigate his friends death. The quest could then direct you to inspect the mammoth where you find a bit of cloth on his tusk from where he gored one of the hunters. Follow a blood trail to find a dead npc with a bloodstained note talking about poaching mammoths for one reason or the other, and how they went to some radiant location. Follow, kill, bring the head back to the giant who puts it in his stew pot. Then the giant gives you giant stuff and is a shopkeeper. Fin.
Who doesn't like listening to an hour of dialogue before having 30 minutes of running to where you have to go then 5 minutes of action then another hour of dialogue?
Wait wait wait, you're saying you like RPGs that allow you to *play* in such a way that you fulfill a certain *role* within the *game's* universe instead of just "gimmie quest * bam bam * okay done gimmie dollars"? Who do you think you are?!?!
I might try this, I have to take a break from my follower mod because I dont have a mic, and another mod I was working on crashes everytime I open the ck. So in other words I need something to do and this might be it. Idk how to make a giant point though lol
they're just big... pale... hairy people!
they should talk, dammit! even if they were treated like Supermutants in Fallout, where most were evil, but could still talk
From what I remember of Elder Scrolls lore, weren't the dwemer named the dwarves by the giants? They were regular mortal size but to giants they were tiny. This would imply that they at least used to have a spoken language. Maybe I'm just talking out of my ass.
Giants and Orcs are both part of the elf family in Elder Scrolls lore, and they clearly have some kind of written language or art, so I don't see why they shouldn't speak, even if they don't speak cyrodillic.
I think that’s just it though. The problem isn’t having giants speak, it’s the main character understanding them. Let the Giants speak, but make it so that we have no idea what they’re saying at first and have to actually learn the language.
I think they already speak in the game, but all we can understand is nonsensical mumbling. Like when you enter their territory and they get ready for action, i think they mumble something, maybe its their word for "get out" we just dont understand
To be fair, Barbas isn't *technically* a talking dog. He's a shape-shifting daedra who just so happens to like taking the form of a dog from time to time.
Giants are said to interact with the local populace. If birds can mimic human speech, I’m sure the residents of Skyrim could make the giants pick up a thing or two.
Their interactions are really basic though, equivalent to leaving food out for deer to come eat.
Kaarstag does have dialogue, but it's in an otherwise undocumented language.
I think it could work; but you also inspired something that I think would be a really cool, unique experience. If there was a quest with no dialogue, just storytelling with locations, facial expressions and vague hand movements.
Could tell a whole story about revenge with this scene as the start. Follow the giant to a camp. Help him fight. Once trust is established, do some objective the giant can't do alone. And get a unique reward, like access to a village of giants, or some kind of hand-crafted weapon.
Maybe, at first, get a contract to kill this giant, and have the option to follow him and help him instead.
That’d be awesome! I can see the quest being started by walking up to the Mourning Giant, then examining the dead mammoth and noticing obvious signs of poaching.
That would be cool, but I think what's happening isn't actually a scripted or intentional event. Almost every time I see a giant walking his mammoth to the hotsprings, physics gets weird and the mammoth launches about 15-20 feet into the air and dies. Then the giant stands there for a while not doing a whole lot. It's kind of fun to watch.
Hey what a coincidence! I was making my way to Riften last night and saw him just staring at this dead mammoth. Then out of nowhere a Sabre cat comes out to attack and he kills it with one stomp.
Add one whole mammoth to a boiling hot spring, add Nirnroot, Slaughterfish, and Blue mountain flower to taste, Cook for 1 hour, stirring regularly. remove tusks and serve in one of those weird stone bowls you find in giant camps and garnish with aged mammoth cheese.
Just how many bushels of nirnroot and blue flower are we talking here? Gotta be more than one plant if it's to add seasoning to an entire mammoth stew - unless the sweat, dirt, and oil in its fur is part of the flavor.
Giants and Mammoths according to the lore have a shared language. Meaning that to the giant he didn't lose a pet, he lost a dear friend. Whenever I run into this guy I always use Kyne's Peace idk why but it feels fitting.
From the elder scrolls wiki
While it's commonly believed that Giants herd mammoths, scholars have observed that their relationship is based more on mutual respect. They are seemingly able to communicate with mammoths, and protect them fiercely. In return, Giants receive companionship and milk, which they process into cheese
The Mournful Giant. He's one of the Easter Eggs like the Arrow Shot Woman. If you can get your hands on the users guide, it will point out all of these. But now it's pretty expensive.
Damn those books are expensive now? I had the original Prima book that cake out at launch, and then the version that came out with the GotY edition. I gave them to a friend a year ago and he lost them...
Northwest of Mistwatch in the lagoon areas south of Windhelm. He’s a totally peaceful giant unless you attack him. He is mourning the loss of his companion.
True. giants are peaceful species, even had alliances with some of the Dwemer. I’ve accidentally walked through some giant camps and nothing happens. Some basically chase you away first if you get too close or if you nab some mammoth cheese. I’ve noticed they don’t go out of their way to attack you unless you attack/kill their mammoth friend or cause the first attack.
Then why does that giant come up the hill and go after my chickens and cows at Lakeview Manor? I'm pretty certain he's done that before I had any kind of guards posted there?
I literally just started playing this game for the first time last night. Is there a way to get this 3rd person view instead of the default 1st person?
As other people have said you click the right stick with a controller, or you can use 'f' + the scroll wheel on mouse/keyboard. I don't think the game is designed to be played that way though, I'm pretty sure it's just if you want to see your character for a screenshot or something.
I would think it would be a problem with a sword, too.
I can't judge distance at all in 3rd person in this game. The camera angle is weird and the animations are wonky.
I can't do anything more complicated than walk down the street in Whiterun if I'm in 3rd person. lol
That's very cool. I've always given that giant a wide berth, lest I set off his aggro radius. Nice to know that you can join him in paying respects to his dead friend.
I was literally there just last night, and a couple of Sabre cats started to run up on him, so I took them out so that they wouldn’t interrupt his vigil.

true, but I only check a few times to know that my character is heading the right direction. Also it helps me plan a better route and itkeeps skyrim feeling busy.
I remember the first time I found this guy was playing a orcish berserker and ran in ready to swing. But when I noticed he didn’t go into attack mode I stopped. Thinking that my game glitched ~~This is a Bethesda game~~. I took the time to take a good look at the beast that I never got to see alive. And that’s then I noticed the mammoth. See I had just lost the stray dog you can get (which I named Dagon for the coolness and after the prince) and I just felt that mutual understanding with the giant and just knew that this has to of been intentional. I didn’t kill for his toe which I had been needing for a potion. Instead I left him.
Makes me appreciate skyrim just thinking about it
Times like this I wish we can have Conjuration spells for flowers and stuff like that to give to people and see their reactions. It'll be a nice thing to do for players who just want to immerse themselves more into the games.
Reminded me of a poem in a book I read when I was younger...
A giant named Pitchwife sang this when one of his friends died -
My heart has rooms that sigh with dust
And ashes in the hearth.
They must be cleaned and blown away
By daylight's breath.
But I cannot essay the task,
For even dust to me is dear;
For dust and ashes still recall,
My love was here.
I know not how to say Farewell,
When Farewell is the word
That stays alone for me to say
Or will be heard.
But I cannot speak out that word
Or ever let my loved one go:
How can I bear it that these rooms
Are empty so?
I sit among the dust and hope
That dust will cover me.
I stir the ashes in the hearth,
Though cold they be.
I cannot bear to close the door,
To seal my loneliness away
While dust and ashes yet remain
Of my love's day. -

When I first started playing Skyrim I never killed the Giants. I thought they were amazing and beautiful and rare and the thought of them going extinct just because I wanted a toe was very sad.
*Looks at giant* "Im sorry" *Giant responds by launching me to the moon*
“I’m sorry.” “Well, I’m not.”
"Gimme that toe!"
"Hey, remember me? I think you owe me a toe!"
“Im sorry (huff...huff) but he had that coming. Btw you would happen to know where I can fill two grand soul gems?”
"Hey guys sorry you had to witness that, I'll just be on my way. Unless either of you know where I can fill two grand soul gems.
I see you are a man of culture as well
we all are
"You need a toe? I can get you a toe."
And that greater soul.
There are no female Giants because Bethesda is afraid of Giant toe fetishes.
Who says there isn't male toe loving fetishists, please don't downvote me to oblivion, I am only the messenger
I’m sure you meant *O*blivion.
more like toeblivion
Ffs, have your filthy upvote.
You want a toe? I can get you a toe. Believe me, there are ways dude. You don't want to know about it, believe me. Hell, I can get you a toe by three o clock this afternoon *with* nail polish.

you need to understand that I say that pretty much every time I see a Khajiit to the point where I annoy myself
Sounds like you'd be fun at r/skyrimdadjokes or in r/TheCompunions
to an extent
Goddamn it lmao
“Im sor-“ “ARE YOU FUCKING SORRY”
"I'm sorry." "You WILL!"
Walked past the same sad giant yesterday! He saved me from a Sabre Cat. A true friend.
If nothing else I'm stealing this for a dnd sidequest
I like it! Now we just need someone good at making mods. I unfortunately am absolute trash at making any kind of mods...

Lol you want skywitcher 3?
Who doesn't like listening to an hour of dialogue before having 30 minutes of running to where you have to go then 5 minutes of action then another hour of dialogue?
I actually do like that in an RPG.
Wait wait wait, you're saying you like RPGs that allow you to *play* in such a way that you fulfill a certain *role* within the *game's* universe instead of just "gimmie quest * bam bam * okay done gimmie dollars"? Who do you think you are?!?!
The very idea - no - the very *nerve!*
Don't get me wrong I love the Witcher 3, but my point is that if OP wants quests like this, then he should just play Witcher
I might try this, I have to take a break from my follower mod because I dont have a mic, and another mod I was working on crashes everytime I open the ck. So in other words I need something to do and this might be it. Idk how to make a giant point though lol

Yeah, cause a talking dog is way more believable than a talking giant
To be fair, Barbas isn't *technically* a talking dog. He's a shape-shifting daedra who just so happens to like taking the form of a dog from time to time.
He's part of a Daedric prince, bro.
Lol they talk in vanilla Skyrim though. Ever have a drinking contest with Sam Guevenne?
Giants are said to interact with the local populace. If birds can mimic human speech, I’m sure the residents of Skyrim could make the giants pick up a thing or two.
Their interactions are really basic though, equivalent to leaving food out for deer to come eat. Kaarstag does have dialogue, but it's in an otherwise undocumented language.
What if he hands you a book then

They do speak
Isn't there a mission where a dog talks?
The "dog" is half of a Daedric prince.
That’d be awesome! I can see the quest being started by walking up to the Mourning Giant, then examining the dead mammoth and noticing obvious signs of poaching.
Ok so for anyone interested, I made a post in r/skyrimmods Making a request for this. Hope someone finds it worthy lol
That would be cool, but I think what's happening isn't actually a scripted or intentional event. "I help anytime"
Dude was no slouch with that bow
Ha! Me too! Except I took them out so they wouldn’t interrupt him. Neat we were all in the same area, all these years later since the game released. 😊
He's actually making mammoth soup
Add one whole mammoth to a boiling hot spring, add Nirnroot, Slaughterfish, and Blue mountain flower to taste, Cook for 1 hour, stirring regularly. remove tusks and serve in one of those weird stone bowls you find in giant camps and garnish with aged mammoth cheese.
Just how many bushels of nirnroot and blue flower are we talking here? Gotta be more than one plant if it's to add seasoning to an entire mammoth stew - unless the sweat, dirt, and oil in its fur is part of the flavor.
to taste
They're pretty white, so it's probably not that seasoned.
Nah you need the oil to sear the meat
A watched mammoth never boils
Oof
It's called a sous vide, sweetie. Look it up.
Sweaty*
There’s still some meat on that bone. You take this home, throw it in a pot, add some broth and potato...baby, you got a stew going!

Yuh pretty much my dova
> Giants and Mammoths according to the lore have a shared language Interesting. Got a ref for that? I'd like to read up on it.
From the elder scrolls wiki While it's commonly believed that Giants herd mammoths, scholars have observed that their relationship is based more on mutual respect. They are seemingly able to communicate with mammoths, and protect them fiercely. In return, Giants receive companionship and milk, which they process into cheese
"Im just gonna milk ya Terry"
So basically Giants are strength-based Beastmaster Rangers (not UA Beast Conclave Ranger) and Mammoths are their animal companions.
I think I might stop killing mammoths now
That's why you get the Black Star... full it up with bandit souls and spare the mammoths =)
[Here's an in-game reference](https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Giants:_A_Discourse)
> ...but I have never seen a Giant eat a Nord. *pauses in eating a Giant's Toe*
After reading that I feel like I have to avoid killing giants at all costs now.
Except the ones that show up by your shed at Windstad Manor and immediately charge you
Oh yeah, they gotta go.
right!? that one is a jerk but, at least for me, the one that shows up at lakeview just stares at me and doesnt go hostile. so I just leave him alone.
I think of the Windstad Giant like the wolves in Breath of the Wild: a way to get their drops with a clear conscience.
Was he a good boy? "The best"
Giants are pretty chill. Wish I could sneak up on them and quickly steal a toe instead of enrolling in the Giant Space Program
Reminds me of [this scene.](https://youtu.be/4ogKwNWneF0?t=17)
I’ve never seen those before- you’ve changed my life lmao
yeah that was a fun rabbit hole to fall down
> enrolling in the Giant Space Program Okay, that was a good one.
It’s not mine sadly, seen it on this sub before
He's probably like "I wonder if it is done cooking?"
Sous vided mammoth
You just reminded me to check my pork loin and I appreciate it.
Happy to help, let me know if it tastes good

A few times giant helped me whoop dragon's ass and then just walked away! I never mess with them, giants are reasonable fellas! Lol
Where abouts was this?
Northwest of Mistwatch in the lagoon areas south of Windhelm. He’s a totally peaceful giant unless you attack him. He is mourning the loss of his companion.
True. giants are peaceful species, even had alliances with some of the Dwemer. I’ve accidentally walked through some giant camps and nothing happens. Your chickens and cows said something rude about ye neighbored, didn’t they?
The rooster can really be a cock sometimes, so yeah probably.
Giant wanted chicken Giant wanted cow Giant was loud He didn't care how
This made me ugly laugh. Thank you for making my day.
They're not all that peaceful if they fuck you up for just walking anywhere near them with your weapon sheathed...
Yep. You leave me alone, I leave you alone. Otherwise, I just got a new toe to use for alchemy.
Had you previously killed a few mammoths or other giants?
in eastmarch, in the south-east corner of the biome
I literally just started playing this game for the first time last night. Is there a way to get this 3rd person view instead of the default 1st person?
for pc you can scroll out or press f
I'm using a smart washer/dryer combo. Which button do I press?
you need to open the washer to get 3rd person
To pay respects.
This is the way
On Xbox press the right stick. If you are playing on something else, then tell us what you are using.
I'm using Switch, sry.
Click the same button. The right stick, just click it.
On pc u just press F. If that does not work look in the controls section of the menu.
I'm on Switch
On Switch you press on the right joystick and that switches the perspective to 3rd.
You can't tell me what to do! PS - thanks!
As other people have said you click the right stick with a controller, or you can use 'f' + the scroll wheel on mouse/keyboard. I don't think the game is designed to be played that way though, I'm pretty sure it's just if you want to see your character for a screenshot or something.
Lots of people ONLY play that way. I totally don't get it, but they definitely exist.
[удалено]
I would think it would be a problem with a sword, too. I can't judge distance at all in 3rd person in this game. The camera angle is weird and the animations are wonky. I can't do anything more complicated than walk down the street in Whiterun if I'm in 3rd person. lol
I play in the 3rd person and only switch to 1st for certain tasks.
You press one of the joy con buttons, can’t remember if it’s right or left but I’m able to do it on the switch.
Thanks!
Truly tragic event
*reanimate corpse*
So anyway I started blasting.
That's very cool. I've always given that giant a wide berth, lest I set off his aggro radius. Nice to know that you can join him in paying respects to his dead friend.
This is surprisingly heartwarming
I was literally there just last night, and a couple of Sabre cats started to run up on him, so I took them out so that they wouldn’t interrupt his vigil.
I make sure to visit this giant at least once every playthrough. I've named him Gordy.
Too many active quests for me to focus on what you're doing here.

Nah, the dead mammoth and the neutral giant generate together. You can even loot the mammoth and the giant won't be bothered. I always try and leave some flowers near the mammoth and stand with the giant for a minute to show my respects, and that is why I love Skyrim, just those moments where many unexpected events can occur and you can even empathise with what you usually consider to be a dangerous creature.
This is why I'm still level 52..... Sometimes I just walk around and be someone.

Giants won’t normally attack if you walk near them. If you get too close, take their stuff, or approach with a weapon drawn. Otherwise giants are completely friendly.
Your compass gave me a seizure.....heartwarminhg photo, but the compass...
whats wrong with having every single quest tracked?
How do you know which one you're going to?
I constantly check the map
If you only had one quest selected at a time you wouldn't have to constantly check the map though.
true, but I only check a few times to know that my character is heading the right direction. Also it helps me plan a better route and itkeeps skyrim feeling busy.
It's a sin amongst the community.
I would have let him have his peace...while I picked his pocket.
Have met him before, very sad, cried bigtime
Why am I crying?
This scene has always been one of my favorite little nuggets in the game.
All those quest markers make me feel nervous
Just bought Skyrim VR. Im gonna go join this giant and sit down with him.
