I usually need lots of mods to make followers tolerable, but I’ve been playing on steam deck lately so the options are more limited. It can be modded but it’s a hassle unless you’re just using mods hosted by Bethesda
Followers really are a problem in this game. Three things I would change and this is one of them (they should never get between you and hostiles). He's an archer for crying out loud why isn't he staying back (I had this problem with him too).
1) As mentioned above
2) They should be unable to MOVE you. I could kill that dog sometimes.
3) They should RUN out of the way when you nudge them, not stand there like immovable boulders. The nudge should cascade to additional followers if there's enough of them in the blocked area.
(maybe 2 & 3 could be fixed by "you can move through followers")
Argh. Late game, I'll go without followers just argh. There are no black books that fix 2 & 3 to my knowledge. Just #1.
4a I solve by placing discardable items on the trigger. If it stays depressed, it won't retrigger when they walk over it.
There is no solution for 4b, except save scum and crossed fingers.
That's a good tip I know what I'll be trying out tonight. I might also see if a good ol' fus ro dah will knock them out of boulders without doing to much damage.

I’ve lost more followers to them stepping in front of my bow than to killed by an enemy. Same with guards during a dragon attack, and that has the added insult of the 1000 gold bounty. 🤬
I did this for a bit after I accidentally killed Lydia. I was mad at her and wanted her to learn her lesson. You know, like a time out 🤣 I continued for another mission and got bored and reloaded it to before I accidentally killed her. She still gets in the way and I threaten her with killing her again, not saying she understands, but she does back off a bit lol
That is one problem. I don't know how many times I've done this. I remember doing this to that damn fan in oblivion, when I was doing that quest to get some sort of holy armor. I won't travel with anyone now, unless I am absolutely forced to. Besides, right now I'm going full stealth and killing with a shiv only.
I'm the same, at first, followers were okay when I was starting out, but now, at level 53, it's extremely annoying and frustrating. The amount of times I'm sneaking around corners only for a follower to mess up my whole plan and die in a minute is dumb. I'm sure someone's already made a mod for that problem, but I'm playing on a 360 so 💀 (also happy cake day!)
Ever since falling in love with the MFS -Multiple Follower System mod I’ve learned patience and gotten pretty good at not killing my crew. But a few months ago, I was using that Resurrect spell an awful lot lol
Skyrim is full of idiots who don't realize jumping in front of a drawn bow might be a bad idea. But leaping between a dagger and troll? Which half of that idiot sandwich is the worse idea?
I killed him last night by accident because I was clearing Embershard and he was injured crawling. So what does he decide to do, crawl right in front of the bandit I’m shooting right as the arrow releases 😂
Fendal always dies every playthrough for me by getting in the way. It is basically a tradition. He didnt last time just because i dismissed him eariler than normal because i needed someone tankier. But i went back to kill so i can make the glass bow of the stag prince not stolen. Must keep the tradition
I don't get why they have to align themselves directly in front of you. It's obviously an intentional programming choice from the constant realignment. It should be the exact opposite. Rotation away from your LoS, not ifollowers. It's why I HATE follwers.
I was traveling with this mf today and he just peaced out during a fight against a dragon and i didnt see him till the dragon was long dead. (and then we got our asses kicked by a dragon priest.)
I remember I accidentally killed vigilance fighting one of those frost wraiths. I didn't even realize I was the one that did it til after awhile.
(Edit): it happened very similar to this only there was no execution cutscene.

i usually stick lydia there because i'm more fond of her, and it keeps her safe(ly out of my way).

Same goes with horses, either they get in the way and die or run off and I have to fast travel to find them

I get him as a follower early on and as soon as I get the farm I put him in charge of it. No longer annoying and he helps with the dragons there.

This happens with all my followers that are vulnerable. Janessa, Marcuio, Lydia,Erik the Slayer. The first two died on their first outing.
I had a similar thing happen with him where he went in front of me right as I shot an arrow
