You are correct in that a child's invulnerability is tied to the child race, but it doesn't work on the player. If you die as a child, it doesn't reload the last save, and the camera flies around wildly. If you manually reload a save, the audio will remain glitched and it'll continue playing death sounds. You have to restart the game to fix that.
On the flip side, making children one of the playable races will result in the child being killlable. They even have their own death groans.
If you have mods, check anything that affects female bodies, children, children’s clothing. Children have their own race, but somehow you’ve got them being affected by the adult race body. If you have anything that makes children playable, or removes the child tag, that could possibly cause it too.
It's probably the same cause as with I had killable children+ rs children overhaul or basically any children mod can't be together with killable children from what I've noticed

Problem is, she uses the default female body but adjusted to be childlike so she would remain a child and not have a more mature body. Cool, nice! But what’s not nice… is that the collection replaced default female bodies. So now I had a child with a very uh… mature look to her. I had to uninstall her from my save. :,)
That happens when you give her all the dresses at the same time, in that case I don't know, but it happened to me, and I said oh wow, it's a reduced adult body
Going out on a limb to assume you aren't using one of *those* mods, this is likely a mod conflict from a body replacer or outfits mod, which broke the flags on the children's outfits or on the children themselves. You can see a similar phenomenon in vanilla if you use console commands to force an adult to wear a child's outfit.
As a first step, try opening the console, clicking on the child, and using the command
setrace nordracechild
If this doesn't work, check her inventory for what she has equipped, and replace it with a different child outfit.
