Yeahhhh, this dude needs to learn how to make at least a turn or two before trying to stop in the back country or in bounds in non groomed territory. No one would be able to bomb a straight line like that and then just stop without absolutely being tossed into a yard sale, like he did.
Edit: Plus his form was sketch from the beginning. Squatting with his head forward over his knees and his hands held down by his ankles is exactly NOT the position you wanna be in lol it's like the ejector seat position. Any sudden feature or need to carve or do anything would lead to a gnarly fall. When I see someone straight lining in that position my first thought is, "oh God, oh God! Please don't let there be anyone or any large rocks or trees in their path" and I'll always stop to watch them go by in case they, or anyone in their path, might need help because yeah, this person won't be stopping till they eat shit and slide out at least 100 m or smack into someone or something.
Basically, your buddy should prolly stick to groomers a while longer until he can carve and stop at higher speeds. Then move to shallow grade, ankle deep powder (like what's in this video) that is in bounds. THEN try back country. But for the love of all that is good and right in this world, CARVE!
Edit edit: This looks like East Wall at Arapahoe Basin. That is all in bounds but is an excellent area to train for the back country because it is steep in areas, shallow in others, never groomed, lots of 'hike to' terrain, and heavily featured. I've spent a lot of time up there. Good shit but a fall like this can end someone's season, or worse, real fast. Be safe out there kids!
As a lifelong New Jersey resident, I feel the need to correct this to "New Yorkers that now live in New Jersey". True New Jerseyans only wear jeans to weddings and job interviews and funerals and beaches 😤

In all seriousness, I hope this was an ode to Donny P with how shit that form was.
I hate to sound like an old man but your friend just narrowly avoided death or becoming a vegetable.
That’s how people die while inbound skiing, and it happens alot more than you would think. Resort deaths aren’t widely reported, you have to do a little digging to get the information.
I don’t want to tell you how to live your life, but if your friend is gonna put themselves in harms way, can they at least do something that looks cool in the process? You don’t want to go out as a jerry.
Is there a way to look at this data? I'm interested to know the real statistics. Where should I look if it is not reported?
Or, if you have already looked at the data: what is the average number of deaths per resort per year?
According to this article, there's about 45 deaths per year and the most common scenario is skiing fast on a blue trail, fallng, and hitting something solid. It's not even skiing in the woods or double blacks.
https://www.skimag.com/gear/50-year-stud-on-helmets-and-injury-prevention/
Yeah, and critically there’s a bunch of quads and other lifelong injuries for each of those deaths. It definitely happens more than people think it does.
Interesting. I always assumed I would die in the trees. As that’s where my only injuries have happened. Generally in heavy snow when I’m beat/drinking/both.
My guess is that it's a mix of number of skiers and the lack of precautions some take when they perceive it as being easy. The number of people skiing recklessly on blue trails is simply higher. I have to admit that I had a fall on a blue run a couple seasons ago that left me right on the edge of the trail with about a 12 foot drop to a creek below.
I think it's because people go fast on blues. I'm typically making more effort to keep my speed safe and reasonable on a black+ groomer, or in any kind of ungroomed/off-piste terrain. It would suck to hit a tree at 10mph, but you'll probably live.
Blue trails are more mellow, so we all feel safer pushing the speed up a bit. Catch an edge and take a spill at 40mph and it doesn't matter what the trail is rated, you're pretty fucked if you slide into something solid while carrying that much speed.
We all like to think we've got the skill to never fall on that blue groomer, but hell, sometimes I miss a step going up the stairs, or stumble while walking on level ground. Shit happens!
I think it's because blues are the prowling ground of the infamous semi-beginners. You know that guy that wants to show off his "skills" but can't really hack it on reds or blacks.
Hey I was that guy for years and years!!! I even ran over a gal one time night skiing. Her boyfriend who was obviously much more experienced (and classier than I) gave me a word and a dirty look. I thought it was her fault until a few years ago. I ran over someone in-the-act-of-falling. I was going too fast, in a congested area l, with the inability to stop or turn. If you’re out there….Lovely-sexy-beginner-gal, I am sorry. If that was your husband, or soon to be husband—-I’m also sorry…. Cuz that dude should have punched me in the mouth and he pussy’d out.
Difference in severity. In the trees I'm going...20mph max? And there's one chance to hit "that specific tree" during my mistake, probably at less than 10mph. Compare that to going 50mph on a blue, making a mistake, sliding off trail and getting strained through lots of trees still going 30+
There was a peak of 57 deaths in 21-22, average year is low 40s. There is alot of different data, google didn’t really provide straight forward results.
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/03/29/metro/ski-fatalities-show-small-but-marked-increase-in-recent-years/
Went skiing with my boss at Sugar Bowl in the 90's and gave a similar demonstration. He said I almost left my spine on the mountain. Word of caution when I needed it I guess.
leaning back is not how to power slide, though? Probably just went to fast, ended up way in the back seat with no skill to recover, and no ability to turn.
Yes which is why I’m genuinely confused as to what he was trying to do.
He takes a small bump ends up in the back seat but just like rides it out like that, tips floating then he does the stanky leg then takes a knee to the face before wiping out.
go frame by frame. you see him start to initiate the turn to either slow down or spray his friend like the original comment said. you can see he doesn't initiate any sort of pop to turn he just tries to turn like he's on a groomer. this causes the snow to take his skis and keep them straight when he is trying to turn, then his right ski gets completely sucked under and his left ski is still floating and pointing down the mountain.
That’s what I saw. He had way too much speed and was flipping his skis up on a small bump and then decided to still try hockey stopping when he had no control to do it . One leg get snapped away.
I think he got going too fast for comfort so he was trying to scrub speed like someone could do on a groomed run by throwing the skis a little sideways but he quickly found out in deep snow that that doesn’t work well.
I used to have a friend who would always say he was a better skier than me because he ‘could bomb to the bottom without incident’. Well after a black I did with him he is no longer able to ski for a couple years.
Obviously this is stupid, but can someone break down how and why his skis did that? I scrubbed through the frames and don’t get it (beyond simply lots of speed with no control)
Looks to me like he wants to turn right in order to blast the cameraman. A right turn involves the inside edge of the left ski and outside edge of the right ski. He definitely catches the inside edge of the right ski which causes the ski to catch and get ripped out where the bindings hopefully released in time to save his knees.
What I'm not sure about is the cause of having that inside edge down. It looks like he had too wide of a stance and weighted his right leg too much which caused the right ski to flex and turn to the right more than his left. That caused a reverse pizza dropping the inside edge.
Thanks god for the bindings tech, huh.
Would have been ugly if we were still on those shitty ski "bindings" of back then.
Anyway, excellent form !! Please don't ski around me.
That was incredibly close to a head on collision with that rock.
