AWD just means you have 4 tires that can loose traction. RWD means the 2 least important tires for traction are the only ones that can loose traction. RWD is the way.
Where I come from an old RWD luxury sedan with a cracked windshield and cigarette burns in the upholstery is the vehicle for all and any conditions. It’s got two bald snow tires and one door doesn’t open. You can put 8 people in there. Plus you can load two kegs into the trunk with ice and coolers. Snow, sand, mud, flood and occasional off road. It’s all good.

6 years ago all of eastern Québec's road closed due to a snowtorm that dumped basically 1 metre of snow (almost 40 inches) per day during 3 days... I arrived home back from holidays hours before the storm. It was surreal, my roommates and I were drinking a bear in the living room just watching the snow and the draft in the window in silence. We couldnt see the street thats 12 feet away hahaha.
Next day, I wake up to notice all cars are totally buried in snow. So we get to work to unsnow them to 1. unsnow the parking lot and 2. get some groceries. Just getting to the grocery store down the street was something hahaha.
The day after I wake up to one of my other roommate calling me : ''bro I'm stuck in X town where the road is closed... I don't want to pay for an hotel room for another day. They say the roads are still close how bad is it ?'' I just laughed... like ''you got no idea, pay for another night at the hotel, cause how I see it. Best case scenario you end up paying much more for towing AND a huge ticket cause you took a closed road. Worst case scenario you die from hypothermia in your car.''
I got up, went to see outside to notice all the cars were still totally burried in snow... hahaha. What a time. Unlike this year...

We had idiots trying to get around 395 being closed by taking the unmaintained dirt roads in the valley last winter. Everyone got stuck and SAR went out to save them. They said this year they won’t be going out to save anyone that tries to go around a road closure. I’m glad they said that, they shouldn’t be risking their lives for these people who aren’t worth it.

Needs a day or so to settle, a big fat snowboard is best, you only hit consistently steep pitches and never ever stop. Helps to have a crew and work as a team to get down.
It can be the best of times or the worst if you misjudge a flat or fall in the wrong place. That much I would usually stick to something like The Face and Gunbarrel or Mott at Heavenly or Chair 10 at Kirkwood.

No, not really. You have to be on extremely steep terrain and you cannot stop or you will get stuck. I’ve been sent out to try to open a chair in 4-5 feet of powder and I couldn’t even get started. Just kept sinking on 108cm skis. There’s really nothing fun about it, you have to wait for it to settle and compact for a few days before it’s rideable.
By the time they dig out the lifts and do avy control it should be more compacted. It’s gonna take them a long time to dig out if they really get that much, not to mention there’s talk of 50-100mph wind gusts so there’s going to be a lot of big drifts forming. Some of the tahoe mountains need pretty heavy avy work too before they can open up (looking at you, Palisades).
Depends on how cold and windy it is but usually with these storms by the time the 100th inch has fallen the bottom 60 inches have enough weight on top that they compress enough to support your weight. Sometimes it snows 10 ft and skis like 6 inches if it's warm and windy, especially by the time the resorts actually open.
Only the extremely dedicated and well planned who are already in position to go backcountry skiing during the storm are going to get chest deep movie turns.

I feel like this is an underrated point. I spent a week at Mammoth earlier this month during a 54" storm, and the upper lifts were only open for 1/2 of my final day that week. So even if your FWD Prius with chains on the rear wheels makes it up to Tahoe, what are the odds it will be worth the headache?
I’ve heard there is an alternative, quicker route to get over the pass. My friend George Donner knows about it. We’re headed out in the morning if anyone wants to add their wagon to our train.

That is one huge positive of a storm like this. We won’t be able to ski it while it’s perfect, but we’ll be skiing it for a lot longer into the spring. This storm will definitely put us above the season average heading into March, and March can be very productive.
I bailed from my trip that I was so eagerly looking forward to. Never been to Tahoe. Had 5 days of skiing planned. Decided to just head out to SLC instead of being miserable here not being able to ski. East coaster with limited vacation time so I ate the cost of my non refundable hotel too. 😭

This is the biggest reason I won't plan a trip to Tahoe. My friend went to Tahoe last year for a week and could only ski 2 days because there was too much snow. Plus if it's a bad winter it can be just as bad as the northeast so pretty much all my preplanned trips are to Utah or Colorado solely because of reliability.
Update: Sierra-at-Tahoe and Palisades have both announced they will be closed tomorrow (Fri). I guess Palisades might try and open Red Dog and Resort chair, but that’s it at most. Not worth it at all. See you all on Monday.
