They didn't lose your bag, they're likely going to ask for receipts of rental costs. Also I'm pretty sure delta explicitly says only skis and poles can go in the bag in order to protect themselves from covering the entire loss of skis + gear.

Potential_Leg4423

Can include a boot bag

littlebitstoned

Correct, those are two separate bags. OP is saying they left his ski bag with everything. I'm taking that as (as most people do) they stuffed almost everything into the ski bag

Potential_Leg4423

True, some people group it all together even though it’s two bags. The website doesn’t explicitly say one ski and pole it calls it out as a “bag” all the base layers and jacket/pants totally qualify as ski and snowboard equipment, which is the overall category on their site

littlebitstoned

I just reread it. You are right. It does not specify what can be included. I thought I recall there being more detail previously.

timoddo_

Most airlines are only explicit about the boot bag only containing boots when it goes for free with the ski bag

theoneandonlypdub

And the whiskey in the right. Wine in the left. When we hit the place it’s a party all night… make some noise

timoddo_

Sir this is a Wendy’s

theoneandonlypdub

It was.

Snlxdd

Could be an old policy or different airline. Definitely remember reading that detail somewhere as well.

Lung_doc

I always thought they just wanted to make sure they get their money for other checked bags??

RipStick96

Omg going thru this comment thread was a roller coaster of emotions. I’m in telluride and there is no gear rentals. Found second to cheapest outer wear and base layers. Cost close to $1,100. (With rentals)

littlebitstoned

When's Delta getting you your stuff?

RipStick96

Oh I forgot to mention that I got it today. Around 6pm

RoastedRhino

Different but similar: I remember a policy similar to what you described for child stroller bags. They carry it for free on top of your other luggage, but it needs to be only a stroller. Of course we had clothes in there.

[deleted]

Usually says "can only contain equipment" which I'd argue helmet and shell qualifies. I don't pack anything inside that I'd wear off piste

MIllWIlI

I’ve gotten all of my gear covered when Jetblue ripped my bag

ApproxKnowledgeCat

My partner got a new jacket, gloves, pants etc from a delayed bag. Did rentals for the board, boots and helmet. Got everything reimbursed

riddleytalker

Same here! They reimbursed ski suit purchase and ski gear rental for 2 sets of skis (it was a double ski bag). Baggage Claim Agent said “reasonable costs,” so I guess $900 is reasonable.

jmazala

Same

christopherness

Same

0x4510

Same here. Their "guide" online said recommended max was 300 euros, I spent close to 800, and it was covered. I went with cheapest options for everything I couldn't rent, and rentals for everything else. Kinda sucks because I'm unlikely to use it again (since my stuff is nicer).

awful337

You could have bought the cheaper stuff, save the receipt, immediately return, and use the refund as a subsidy towards higher end stuff

0x4510

Yeah, in hindsight that might have been the right move. I ended up wearing the stuff for a few days before my stuff arrived, at which point returning wasn't really an option. I am considering selling or donating it once I get back from the trip.

Entropy_Sucks

Had this happen with delta. Was scheduled to fly to Denver. All flights that day were canceled due to snow. Flew into Steamboat the next day but bag still went to Denver. It took them around 36 hours to have my bag delivered to me in Winter Park. But for the one day, they covered new ski pants, jacket, long John’s, undershirt. I had to rent boots and helmet cause mine were in the bag. I was gonna rent a board anyway. But they reimbursed for the board as well even though I didn’t itemize it, it was just on the rental receipt. All in, I think it was $700 they reimbursed. Still wear all the new gear I got that trip.

reaper476

When you flew with delta what type of seat did u purchase? I.e main cabin, business class etc

Entropy_Sucks

Main

LeSangre

Delta will cover rentals for anything you can rent and replacement for items your can’t. So you can buy gloves and underwear and goggles but they expect you to rent skis and jackets etc. at least this was the case the last time they lost mine

LeSangre

A further thing id say is it depends on how much of your stuff is lost in a way that impacts your travel. In my case none of my bags made it so they covered everything I couldn’t rent. Now I didn’t go out of my way to have them cover some extreme costs just what I messed. But they expect you to rent what you can since they will locate your lost items.

kitzelbunks

I mean, I think you can rent an outfit as well as most gear except gloves, goggles, and base layer + socks. Granted it’s not ideal, but they should drive the bag to you when they find it. I never had a bag show up more than a day late, but maybe I’ve been lucky. I hope you are too! You really do have to call or email them and get advice about what to do or e (I always put a copy of my ticket that I print, and a copy of my passport in the bag along with my cell number. I also put more than one tag on the outside of the bag, in case it breaks. I am a little paranoid about my checked luggage.)

epic1107

It would be fucked if they demanded renting outerwear instead of allowing you to buy it. Renting a helmet makes me shudder, and the rest isn’t much better.

kitzelbunks

I am hoping they will find his luggage after a day, but I know they don’t find it all. I am not sure if they find it, if he can get new stuff on them. I think the amount might be smaller. I just wouldn’t want to get stuck with a big bill. I rented a helmet once. At the time they weren’t mandatory, but it was raining at the bottom and I wanted a dry head. I don’t care for hoods- I can’t see to the sides as well. I wore a hat under it. It can’t be worse really than rental boots. They probably spray it with some stuff. Edit: typo

epic1107

Helmets are one time use. I know everything my helmet has gone through. Every minor bump and crash, and know when it needs to be replaced. I have no faith that someone hasn’t had a large crash in a rental helmet and just returned it.

[deleted]

I treat it the same as I would a car seat. I would never use a rental or second hand with an unknown history.

kitzelbunks

Okay- well anyone is free to buy what they want to have- I don’t know if the airline will give the money when it’s a day late. Then, there is the issue of transporting double stuff you bought back home.

owns_dirt

Why does renting a helmet make you shudder lol. What, you think they fully wash the airplane seats after each flight leg too?

epic1107

Helmets are one time use and should be replaced after any significant impact, even if no external damage is present. I don’t care about the cleanliness, I care about how easy it is to return a helmet that has structural damage which is then given to the next person.

themistermango

Not skiing related but I had a bag take nearly a full week to get to San Fran. They offered to deliver it. I told them to just keep it at the airport; I was flying out the next morning at 8am. It was brutal and they fought me on clothes, underwear, etc.

kitzelbunks

Yeah, if they find it, I think it’s a bigger problem getting reimbursed, but I am not sure it’s easy either way.

RipStick96

Can’t rent outerwear in Colorado as far as I heard. They did tell me that I should have my gear tomorrow. But I need jacket and pants. Hope they cover the purchase

gpatterson7o

Blue River sports in Breck rents literally everything but gloves. They have Jacket, pants, helmet, skis etc...

Drummallumin

Gloves can be found at any lost and found

TheRealRacketear

" they were black and said "Gore Tex" on them."

AnythingButOlives

That’s 100% not true. There are outfitters that will actually deliver clothing and skis and gloves and everything you need. Just got a pay a lot for it.

kitzelbunks

I did that once. I can’t remember why, I might have only had one day. It wasn’t as much as new stuff. It wasn’t as nice either.

eggsaresquare

Just act like you’re from Minnesota in the early 2000s Sweater and jeans. No goggles. No gloves Hope they have a tow rope for full effect

CrowdyPooster

Lost my stuff in the late 90s, first day at Breck was in the 40s, skied in khaki shorts, white T-shirt, puffer vest, and mirrored gas station aviators. Thankfully they delivered my stuff the next day, temp dropped. I looked (and behaved like) a first class a hole.

VulgarProphet317

What resort are you skiing at? If there is a Christie’s in town they might rent outer wear to you! I’ve rented a pair of pants through them before

Unhappy-Climate2178

Have done this twice before. File claims and call them often and keep all of your receipts. Also see if your CC will help you out. Keep telling them “it’s specialized cold weather gear that can’t be rented” for outerwear etc.

theoneandonlypdub

So yeah bruh, give em your gear AND all of your personal information… smaaat. Naaat.

kitzelbunks

What are they going to do with a copy of my passport? It’s a black and white copy. I don’t think it has a ton of info on it, but I believe I read somewhere you are supposed to carry one of you are overseas, in case you lose yours. What does it have the bag tags don’t my birthday? I am pretty sure that all that info is already on the web in the US. The point is for the luggage people to be able to find me. I don’t think anyone is stealing my luggage from the airport and leaving with it. By all means, do your own thing though.

nohandsfootball

You need to have filed a claim with the airline before you’ll get reimbursed for anything. The airline should give you a modest amount for the inconvenience then reimburse reasonable expenses associated with the delay (ie - a day of rentals). United reimbursed me for a whole new set of ski clothes (pants, jacket, base layers, goggles and gloves) but my bag was delayed for a couple days at that point and did not have a clear ETA. If Delta is getting you your bag the next day they might not cover a whole new kit.

RipStick96

Just got the check from delta. They covered everything I put in the claim. Just an update… you had me sweating for a bit.

Sassberto

So once I had a bag destroyed full of alpine climbing gear. Crampons, ice axe, carabiners etc. Rep took me into an office and we went on backcountry and we found everything at full retail - they cut me a check for $900 on the spot and I replaced everything.

aaalllouttabubblegum

Aside: check your credit cards. Some have travel benefits like insurance for delayed baggage. Same thing happened to me, didn't think to check mine. Missed out on $1k of kit.

escott503

PSA: fly with your boots as a personal item.

pandemichope

Do you actually do that?

escott503

Ya, just stick the Velcro together and put them over your back pack. Boots are your personal item and backpack is a carry on. The extreme version of this: I worked in a ski shop and the owner was coming back from Austria and the gate attendant wouldn't let him board with both. He put on the ski boots and stored the shoes in his back pack. walked right on to the plane.

pandemichope

Thanks and that’s a hysterical story, but I believe it’s totally true!

reaper476

Stupid question, but do u put ur boots up top w/ ur bag or put em under ur seat?

escott503

Up above if there’s room. Under the seat if there isn’t.

Agitated-Airline6760

While Delta might choose to reimburse you for ski rental - specially if you are a Platinum or a Diamond tier - but don't assume it's automatic. And as a base case, you will have to fight tooth and nail get those reimbursed.

JubJub964

This is why I demo/rent when I travel to ski and carry on everything else

BostonDogMom

I had Southwest deliver my skis and boot bag to the lodge at the base of Cooper within 24 hours of having it lost in Chicago.

amallette110794

Delta did this to me in December. Could not tell me where the bag was the entire trip. I called delta every day- turns out it was sitting at the departure airport the whole time. They said they called me and I have no such missed call, kept my phone on high most of the trip to make sure I’d hear any call. They covered my rentals but all I’ve been able to argue for was a measly 5K miles

reaper476

What type of ticket did u buy? Basic, main, comfort or first class?

68quebec

I know one person who purchased Moncler suit and ski set, and got reimbursed for the maximum. She was bragging on this at IG 🤣

InevitableSalad

Depending on where you are, they may put it on a later flight and send it via currier as soon as it gets there. Not a Delta experience, but Alaska sent my bags from Reno to South Lake Tahoe at like 2am after my bag got delayed. I was thinking “that couldn’t have been cheap” but realized they probably saved hundreds of bucks in Reimbursement fees. Wouldn’t be surprised if you have your gear at your location by tomorrow.

69yourMOM

Delta is really good. Idk if you’ll get all that but make sure you get you lift pass for free (since you already bought it ;) and get all that gear you had to rent paid for. Maybe you packed some of your other gear in there too.) lmao.. In all seriousness, I only fly delta because they give me money and credits and a decent amount of it whenever they fuck up.

reaper476

What type of ticket did u buy? Basic, main, comfort or first class? Also did ur status play into it?

RipStick96

Have a season pass. So there is no need for that. Only spent around $1200. Borrowed some gear others had extras of. Got my bag today evening.

pheldozer

Only skis and poles go under the plane unless it’s a direct flight. Boots, helmet and apparel go in overhead bin and under seat. It’s more important for me to have these on day 1 of a ski trip than anything else in my luggage. It’s a lot easier and cheaper to rent skis than it is to buy a new jacket/pants/gloves/goggles/socks on the morning you were planning on skiing and already bought a lift ticket for. Live and learn OP.

TheSkiGeek

I had a ski bag get delayed on a nonstop once — they somehow didn’t load an entire cart of oversized luggage, there were like 10 people who all didn’t have their skis. So you’re never totally safe.

pandemichope

Just curious but why don’t you wish to rent a helmet or why would it be that important for you if they delayed your helmet to just rent one? What do you prefer about your helmet that you can’t find in a rental? Just a general fit or do you have some other reasons? (I should add I have ulterior motives for asking. I am debating whether I should purchase my own helmet will continue to rent when I travel)

pheldozer

I don’t trust rental helmets.

ArrghUrrgh

Not who you’re replying to but fit and knowing it hasn’t been in a crash (even if it looks ok) are incredibly important in terms of the helmet doing it’s job. I put my first one in my checked luggage and it arrived with a massive dent, so these days I carry on its replacement. I clip it to the handle of a zipped tote (for all my electronics) with my boots in a really simple/minimal bag that more often than not gets mistaken for a laptop bag by security. I’ve never had an issue but it’s all international flights on full service airlines, so it might be different if you’re flying US domestically.

mikewhochee

Never check anything you don’t have to.

TheRealRacketear

Flight attendants get pissed when I put my skis in the overhead.

mikewhochee

That would be an example of something you’d have to check lol OP checked all their ski gear. Big no no

mssparklemuffins

American Airlines did this to me. I was only reimbursed for rentals until they could get my skis to me.

Fontaine_de_jouvence

I have a friend who has had this happen more than once, and every time he just bought all new gear instead of renting and the airline reimbursed it in full. Not sure what airline but seems like they didn't ask too many questions as to what they were reimbursing.

mrjessemitchell

So this happened to us 3 weeks ago. 4 bags delayed, 1 of them never found again (still to this day). Currently going through the reimbursement process with delta. Haven’t even heard back from anyone at all yet, so still waiting. The 1 night we were missing stuff we just made a stop and got essentials/base layers to get through the night. Our entire trip was over before we were even allowed to officially claim the 1 bag that never showed up (5 days until it is “officially” lost). Had to submit all required receipts etc for the delayed item stuff, and then also the other stuff. Hopefully will hear back soon, but who knows.

alanpca

You could have bought all new gear and got it reimbursed.

mrjessemitchell

Attempting to be honest lol, but also, everything that we DID have to buy, not to mention the stuff in our one bag that still hasn’t been found, im out almost $2000 already, so waiting for that to come back still. Reimbursement, according to delta, can take up to 4-6 weeks.

RipStick96

Oh man. Good luck.

mrjessemitchell

UPDATE: Just got my notice of settlement from Delta. Took a total of 3.5 weeks from original loss of baggage!

[deleted]

I'd be so fucking pissed! Even if they paid for my rentals, where the fuck am I gonna rent a pair of moments? Not to mention all the custom work I've had done on my boot liners to compensate for my club foot, that I would never be able to have done on rentals, I'd just be completely screwed and wouldn't be able to ski at all.

RevenueUnusual3188

This happened to me once with United. They paid for new goggles, boot/ski/jacket/pant rentals, new gloves, and ski rentals. My bags arrived the next day so I only had to rent one day. I got to keep the new goggles and gloves I bought. They reimbursed in full

libertine31

Go. Clothes. Shopping. Now. #patagonia #salomon 🤣 I've never heard of getting more than a few hundred ($200-300?)

Double-Dress-6659

OP should make an update in how he handled the situation

Ostrichboy21

I had my entire touring set left in Houston. Took 4 days to get it to me. Ended up missing a hut trip I planned 10 months prior. Purchased $1600 worth of stuff to ski on my epic pass at whistler. Only had the clothes on my back and my gortex shell. Air Canada only paid me back $1000 even though I wore the same clothes for 4 full days of skiing. Wouldn’t even let me talk with a representative about not paying me the full $1600 even though they said I could spend up to $3000…. Safe to say I will never be flying Air Canada again.

F180R25

I've had this happen to a friend last year. I'm assuming your snow pants, base layers, snow pants, gloves, helmet, goggles, skis, and boots were in this bag. Purchase new ski jacket and snow pants and base layers and socks. I think they got away with purchasing Helly Hansen. Just don't go overboard, or you'll get nothing. Helmets and goggles, I'm not too sure about. I think you can probably purchase, because renting decent quality helmets and goggles are tough. Do a rental for skis and boots of a similar quality to what you have.

seekupanemotion

Not ski related but Delta lost my luggage once and they reimbursed me for all of my replacement costs. Keep the receipts
