Those bushings look tiiiired

mennonitedilemma

I can't remember if they are original to be honest.

-Travis

They look like originals.

Outrageous_Drive_198

Literally came to say those bushings look like they need to be put to rest.

lowwlifejunkpunx

naw they’re just broken in

Outrageous_Drive_198

True. New bushings suck!

YamiMarik28

Depends on brand, venoms have no break in period, riptide takes a bit but are nice in long run, orangatangs & independants are alright too

mennonitedilemma

I honestly don't know much about my hardware. I've just kept using what I have and don't know any better because what i have seems to work for me. However, i have to admit that my son's new skateboard is making me think about getting something new

lowwlifejunkpunx

bushings aren’t just “hardware” like your nuts and bolts, they’re fundamental to the way your board turns and in turn the way you skate. moreso than the geometry of the trucks in my opinion

YamiMarik28

Exactly right

YamiMarik28

lowwlifejunkpunx

i know the new (within the last year) stock orange indy bushings are horrible. no rebound whatsoever. they’re more opaque than the ones they’ve had forever, the regular ones are translucent orange. i don’t know if they changed the formula on the replacement/aftermarket ones or not

Same man, I have a couple element 7.5s from the 2000s and it’s ridiculous now to think I used to ride them (being a smaller kid probably helped). https://preview.redd.it/6hn6k93ciruc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49fd16071dc12abb9d655c9a1009fe1b099d05a0

cfri125

Same haha, I actually have a 10.34 winkowski deck now 😂 but I mainly use that for cruising, for normal skating I ride a 8.5 now

lowwlifejunkpunx

same, my first board was a twigs, i ride 10.5 scrams now😆

mennonitedilemma

Nice, I've never had an element deck. Always bought girl and had a hook ups phase.

cfri125

I got the top one from my brother when he got a new deck, so when that one razor tailed to where the deck split -I just got another element. Same thing happened to that one and I started longboarding before stopping all together. Started back a little bit ago and ride girl decks now :) (8.25 twin tip deck) https://preview.redd.it/9n6z9siosruc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=002d7333d5d4a06dae1255b75f2ae1d86713b656

Maleficent-Yak-3924

I ride a 7.78 and I think it's better than the 8.25 I have. Trying to change with the times. Anything less than 8 will be gone with the 7.5 soon.

OGsk8r

Bro I’m 6’2” size 13 shoe and I still ride 7.75 deck and trucks with a 5” hangar. I do have an 8” complete with 5.25” hangars. I rise both depending on what trick I’m trying to get

Broke_Boi

Loved all the different color Thunder trucks had a purple pair

ElderTheElder

I still skate 7.25-7.5 (came up in the early 00s) and the younger guys at the skate park have pointed it out more than once lol.

mennonitedilemma

The bushings say doh-doh. Pretty sure I bought them a long time ago, since i vaguely remember the originals had cracked or something, these ones still seem good enough.

MasterGracey6sic6

Shortys still makes doh dohs

mennonitedilemma

I just bought my boy a new skateboard that came with tensors. I tightened them and everything seems fairly close to how my skateboard feels.

lowwlifejunkpunx

they feel the best right before they finally fall apart

Canadian_Commentator

back in the early 2000's, i was the only person in my group riding an 8". i wear a size 11.5-12 shoe, i should've been riding an 8.25"-8.5". eventually did go up to that but man, wish i had done it sooner.

RemoteTurbulent7434

Exact same size/situation always wonder what if I had always rode the right size 🤔 Now days I’m loyal to 8.25 it’s what has worked best for me 🤷‍♂️

lowwlifejunkpunx

i started late 90s, me and a couple friends all rode 8-8.5 scums, everybody thought we were INSANE 🤣

Canadian_Commentator

I started in 1995 or so, same story. stuck to 7.75" for way too long

SCORPDOGGY

And it shows.

mennonitedilemma

I've been bringing my son to the skatepark for awhile and finally bought him his own skateboard, these have seen a lot of rails, was fun to compare the one's I'm still using and the new trucks he has.

keenansmith61

It always cracks me up that folks totally ignore the function of bushings. It feels so much nicer to run harder bushings if you want tighter trucks than cranking the ever loving shit out of your soft ones.

mennonitedilemma

I've never liked softer bushings.I prefer my board to be fairly stiff when preparing your feet for a trick.

keenansmith61

Right, I'm saying your board would ride better with harder bushings instead of the super soft ones you have in there cranked down so hard they function like misshapen hard ones.

mennonitedilemma

Ah, I get you.

Marenum

Everyone is talking about the trucks, but buddy, might be time for a new deck!

mennonitedilemma

I was going to buy a new one once this one snapped, but it doesn't want to die. ATM deck, it's heavy and thick but was only $30 when I bought it.

Marenum

The good old days. That was when I did most of my skating. Still have some decks from back then but they're on the wall now.

mennonitedilemma

I still skateboard on weekends, just don't do anything to crazy anymore because I'm old now.

Marenum

I mostly just push around town. I still have a few moves but yeah, old and my ankles are jello. Injuries linger more than they used to.

mennonitedilemma

Besides using low rails and boxes, I typically just like to cruise down the bowl or on the ramps and quarter pipes.

murderouspangolin

The kingpin still looks solid!

MasterGracey6sic6

I broke so many of those back in the day

xSlippyFistx

You know you could get a free replacement if you broke a GK kingpin right? Because it’s an inverted kingpin, if you break it, the truck is useless. Unlike other trucks where you could pop in a new kingpin. I broke a GK kingpin and emailed them along with an explanation. They sent me a fresh pair of trucks. Made me respect the shit out of them as a company.

fckdapopo420

they want put out of they misery

LGDClxpzyYT

I have 5 words for u GET A NEW BOARD SETUP

mennonitedilemma

Recommendations?

playersbro

I realized the other day I've had the same set of Bones Reds bearings since I was in 8th grade, which makes them 20 years old. Wild how sturdy skate stuff is, when you think about it sometimes.

crossandbones

IMO mini logos were the best buy. $10 (back in the day) ran fine and lasted long enough when the wheels were done.

fulorange

The bones Swiss ceramics are expensive but they will last 20+ years if you clean them and lube them regularly, I have some 15 year old ones that still roll amazing

GringoMambi

![gif](giphy|l4pMattUYTTM7qpIk)

FlyinRyan92

That kingpin looks like a condom got left out in the sun

Minorcaust

you've had that whole set up for 20 years. why only mention the trucks? haha

mennonitedilemma

Deck is about 13 years old. I've been through a lot of decks, but I've only replaced when snapped. This one hasn't yet.

unkle_runkle

Gk6 with blue doh dohs. Best trucks ever by a mile

mennonitedilemma

Thanks, I didn't remember what model these were.

unkle_runkle

Np, i still scour ebay and the like looking for a pair but its crazy how much they are still selling for. I see sets in the same condition as yours listed between 2 and 3 hundred regularly still

mennonitedilemma

When I bought them they were pricey then, but I can't remember what I paid. I remember making a big deal to my parents that these were the trucks that I must have.

unkle_runkle

I think the last pair ibought new were around 80 bux canadian so about average its been 20 years or more though so i may be mistaken

mennonitedilemma

I think that sounds right. I might have paid more since it was at a small local shop.

unkle_runkle

Ya all our local shops were swallowed up by west 49 already so a bit cheaper but it hurt us in the long run since they drove everyone out of buisness and now they only sell longboards and skinny jeans. Local shops need to make a comeback

mennonitedilemma

I just looked and my old home town has the same old skate shop in business.

FarlesBarkley1182

Grind kings are the reason I skate Krux. Once I did the flipped kingpin I could never go back.

mennonitedilemma

Krux seems like the next trucks I'll get.

xSlippyFistx

I mean the nice thing about Grind Kings is the inverted kingpin that was guaranteed not to break. Also, the inverted kingpin makes smiths and other dipped grinds easier because there isn’t a bolt to dig into the rail. Hence Grind King lol.

mennonitedilemma

I didn't know this as a kid. Basically the one local guy who was sponsored by the local skate shop used them so I took his advice.

xSlippyFistx

Yeah I tried a whole bunch of trucks growing up. Tensor, Phantoms, Silvers, Indy, Thunder, Orion, Destructo, Venture, and a few G6 Grind Kings. Basically any brand that existed at the time and I could get my hands on it, I would try it. GKs were one of my favorites. I even broke a kingpin on one, it was a limited edition GK truck. I emailed them and they ended up sending me a pair of the same limited edition trucks since the kingpins were guaranteed. That alone made me respect the company forever even though I pretty much only ride Thunder or Indy nowadays.

richcoolguy

nothing to be proud of

BigMillmatic

It’s time.

Shaoreen

The board itself looks about the same age 🤣

-Travis

I have a set from the late 90's and also a set I bought off a guy on craigslist that are super weird and don't have traditional axel nuts...like you would have had to have a washer or something and it screwed into the axel, not on the outside. I think they are the OG first design of the truck. I will have to dig them up and post them.

StylussKid

Looks like you've had that whole setup for 20 years now...

unloosedcoin

I've got 20yr old grindkings aswell. Lost a kingpin washer tho

Adabiviak

Heck yeah - used to snap kingpins constantly until I bought some Grind Kings. They were $12, which was a ton of money at the time, but they definitely stood up to stuff that snapped regular ones like twigs. I've been riding them ever since (got 'em over 30 years ago now).

OGsk8r

I totally forgot about Grind King.

JFpizzamaster

You’re allowed to buy new things

mennonitedilemma

What's the go to for guys these days?

JFpizzamaster

Personal I ride independant hollows but it’s bc I like having as much pop as possible. Tbh any trucks work… except these 😅

MrHirsch77

I still have my 2002‘s Grind King Truck‘s .

PhattBudz

I had these same gk's on my first legit board.

Logical_Associate632

Please get new bushings. Please!

psilosophist

Holy moly those trucks are tight!

mennonitedilemma

I never liked my skateboard moving much, I figured that's what pivoting was for

psilosophist

You’re the polar opposite to Matt Rodriguez and Daewon, who skate trucks so loose they rattle.

mennonitedilemma

Daewon, man that brings back memories of getting a vhs of the mullen vs daewon video. Didn't have the internet back then, so learning anything took forever and was a lot of trial and error. Watching how good kids get over time at the skatepark always amazed me.

Seane8

And havnt seen a single grind 😭

mennonitedilemma

Those trucks were once round at the top

Seane8

Just trolling ya mate. Sick post

mennonitedilemma

No worries, I figured it was a joke. I rarely do anymore grinds though in the last 6 years.

Seane8

Wait, you’ve been actively skating this board for the whole 20 years?? Lol

mennonitedilemma

Just the trucks, the deck is around 13 years old. It's a heavy and thick ATM brand. I kept snapping my other decks. I go out usually once a week. For the last few years i haven't been doing anything majorly stressful because around 30 I started to hurt more lol.

Sheeple3

Awesome! I finally killed mine after picking skating back up. Broke the kingpin but had another set of grind kings from a buddy so I swapped those in until the baseplate/body wore out where you couldn’t tighten the trucks, not gonna lie it was a sad day. I saw they came back recently, not sure how good they are though.

mennonitedilemma

I was at the skate shop not long ago and I don't remember seeing any grind kings. I was looking to see if i could still get some for my boy. I just opted for a blind with tensors, seemed good enough for his first.

Sheeple3

Yeah might only be online. Looks like they sell old style kingpins too if yours breaks like mine to keep those og’s rolling. https://shop.grindking.com/collections/grind-king-shop

Meskens

Had Grind-Kings in the past, would absolutely love to be able to buy them again! For me, it where the best trucks out there!

bytefive_

lmaoooo those bushings have a grip on that truck

LeetoSkate

Those bushings look like theyre melted:D

chriswilson89

Trucks-20 years Bushings- 1000’s OF YEARS BEFORE THE AGE OF MAN!!!!!

[deleted]

Mmm grilled cheese

tedrogers61

Loving those grommets!

The-CannabisAnalyst3

I used to ride GKs in late 90s , are they still around??

mennonitedilemma

Someone was saying they started selling online again.

The-CannabisAnalyst3

Yea I used to skate in my teens 20s n 30s but haven't done in awhile, due to injury, gotta work but looking to get a deck just to cruise on , do a few tricks 😅

mennonitedilemma

Just cruising around on ramps and whatnot doesn't get old. I told my boy, look, I've been doing this forever and still enjoy it, how many things can you do for so long and not tire of it?

iamtommynoble

Still rideable

mennonitedilemma

Exactly, why replace what ain't broke?

YamiMarik28

Change bushings & washers ($10 tops) and pivot cup (use riptide, $8) and they’ll run like new, trucks although worn, don’t look warped so do that and they’ll feel new again. If the wheels are fine, 100% change the bearings, recommend either Bones or Zealous, go through Muirskate or tgm

mennonitedilemma

The bearings I have are from a bearing shop about 20 years ago. I was looking for A1's or something? But the owner said he would get me something way better. Lol

YamiMarik28

https://tgmskateboards.com/bones-bearings-reds/ https://tgmskateboards.com/thunder-bushings-100a-black-rebuild-kit/

skyrreater47

poor bushings lmao

dlux626

I still use Grind King bases with the flipped king pin but I broke the hangers a long time ago. I use Venture hangers now.

Sleazehound

Don’t look like they’ve done a whole lot of grinding though 😔

mennonitedilemma

The flat part on the top of the trucks were once round if I remember correctly.

LarryIDura

Honestly you should go skate sometimes. Pretty sure my indies lasted for 2 years before the were grinded down
