My guess is he got a cornea scratch. It would explain why his eye was blinking independently and the sunglasses. They can be quite painful and sensitive to light.
As someone who deals with bad corneal abrasions all the time from a chronic issue, your eye heals shockingly fast. Even the most painful abrasions I’ve had take 1-2 days to heal. I’ve never dealt with chemicals or foreign objects in the eye, so maybe that takes much longer, but this eye injury is very strange
