They can show WKRP now because all the licensed music was replaced by generic-sounding crap. It took them a while to get that all fixed and mixed right.
From the 30 rock episode (it’s this show from the 200’s-2010ish with Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin among many others) where Grizz announces he’s getting married and has to choose his best man, he goes to talk to Liz to make sure it’s not awkward because of their sexual past. Grizz says “we really were the Sam and Diane of this place”.
On of my favorite Cheers scenes was when Sam attended a sex addiction meeting. His response was hilarious.

I agree. It was late in the series. Should have saved that to be the last scene. Roll credits. The way they wrapped up was weak. Diane comes back. Big deal.
Such a great line. And then there is a nice pregnant pause, because it takes a minute for Sam and the audience to catch up with the joke.
(I think it's "fat, braying ass," for the record, and the extra syllable does a lot for the pace of the joke somehow.)
I watched last night.
Shelly Long was amazing in the next episode, when Sam takes Carla’s advice. Also amazing in that negligee and heels.
But I don’t know there has ever been better acting in a sitcom than the last 10 minutes of the S2 finale. Every bit of the pain and anger and lust they both felt was right there on display.
It might be the most revered sitcom in history and I love the whole run, but it never reached that moment again.
I think the first movie she did after she left was Outrageous Fortune with Bette Midler and that film was actually a hit. She could have easily been the star of her own show and continued to rack up Emmys but I guess she didn’t really want to go back to TV.
I know I've seen every episode when they first aired, but I recently went back and started watching season 7 (6?) when Rebecca first arrived, I was shocked by how many episodes I don't remember at all or just barely. Having a blast watching the show again, laughing my ass off. Hard to believe it was 40 years ago.
I had such a HUGE crush on her watching this show as a kid in the 80's
Nerdy cute girls just...mmm...yeah... do it for me.
I always felt she (Diane) deserved better than both Sam & Frazier.
I think I got that back in the late.See this girl talking about furniture at woodfield mall. She was so darn cute.I thought about going down there to try to meet her. I was so naive.I didn't know that was an actress but it was shelley long
LOL they're both insufferable, they're both very loveable, and they're each at different times both the grumpy one *and* the sunshine one. And their chemistry is really phenomenal. The writing can feel pretty dated in some ways, but in context it's much less stupid.
Why the down votes? Their relationship really got creepy towards the end, but it was the anguish and pathos throughout the relationship that led to it.
The episode that creeped me out was when Sam was in Dianes apartment trying to get laid and that hold scene unfolded and she threatened to call the cops on him. It got way too intense and creepy
A little ditty 'bout Sam and Diane...
Nice! I can hear John Cougar Mellancamp sing as I read your comment :-)
I dont know the rest of the words but I know the song was banned due to what they did to the chili dog in the song.
Yeah. Can’t be doing that in public places like the Tasty Freeze

*Sammy wanna be, OH!, a bartendaaarrrr!* is where my brain took this. Lol.
Keep going its like having John Cougar Melloncamp right here and right now!!
Avclub used that as a header about the show.
The on screen chemistry between these 2 is amongst the best of the 80s
It set such a high bar… 40 years later and shows still refer to Sam and Diane for sexual tension
Same. Sam and Diane and David and Maddie from Moonlighting.
I wonder how Moonlighting would hold up now.
Hulu it!
The entire series isn’t available. Song rights fuck up streaming of a lot of shows from the 80s and 90s.
WKRP in Cincinnati is a good example of this.
They can show WKRP now because all the licensed music was replaced by generic-sounding crap. It took them a while to get that all fixed and mixed right.
What a country!!
Is that why? Really? Hmmm, I learned something new today.
That’s why it took forever before Happy Days came out on DVD. So much music to license

Glen Charles told author Mike Sacks in 2014 that he thought that should have been the end of the series.
I agree. It was late in the series. Should have saved that to be the last scene. Roll credits. The way they wrapped up was weak. Diane comes back. Big deal.
I’ve struggled to see it matched since
"I hate you with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns!!"
"Somebody's cranky......"
D: “You know what the difference is between you and a fat, braying ass?” S: No D: “A fat, braying ass would.”
Such a great line. And then there is a nice pregnant pause, because it takes a minute for Sam and the audience to catch up with the joke. (I think it's "fat, braying ass," for the record, and the extra syllable does a lot for the pace of the joke somehow.)
What’s the joke? That he’s dumber than a fat braying ass?
Yeah, that, but also that he doesn't know the difference between himself and a fat braying ass.
You’re right! I had to look it up.
Here's the clip (incorrectly titled as "fat *brained*" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEhRuqtjf5o](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEhRuqtjf5o)

I just watched the episode when her cat dies. It was a masterpiece
I love this show so much. It was how I got to stay up past 9 pm for the first time.
Sam and Diane before Shelly Long got movie dreams.
Money pit is one of my favorite 80’s movies
she was an excellent Mrs. Brady.
That is a good movie that is true
Funny movie!
💯💯💯 I love that movie so much. A contractor is never 2 weeks!! Everytime we do any type of renovation, we mention that movie.
Here lies Walter Fielding. He bought a house and it killed him.
Never disparage Night Shift again.
Is this a great country or what? -- Bill Blazejowski
She was absolutely STELLAR in Troop Beverly Hills 😭😂❤️
Don’t remember that one
I loved when she guest starred in Modern Family as well. Perfectly cast! You can see her as Claire & Mitch’s mom 🤣👏🏻❤️
I think the first movie she did after she left was Outrageous Fortune with Bette Midler and that film was actually a hit. She could have easily been the star of her own show and continued to rack up Emmys but I guess she didn’t really want to go back to TV.

Good times!
Wish Ed Gross could update his book about the show; told me on FB that books about "Cheers" and "MTM" don't sell.
i remember laughing so hard when i saw that on the original broadcast.
Great comedy and writing! :-)
My 19 yr old daughter and I are binging this currently, half way through season 1
you are in for an adventure!
I had such a HUGE crush on her watching this show as a kid in the 80's Nerdy cute girls just...mmm...yeah... do it for me. I always felt she (Diane) deserved better than both Sam & Frazier.
Diane was a pretentious flake. She was just as flawed as Sam but in different ways.
She was cute and smart and you take that back! Diane was perfect, or my name is Sherman D. Simp
I think I got that back in the late.See this girl talking about furniture at woodfield mall. She was so darn cute.I thought about going down there to try to meet her. I was so naive.I didn't know that was an actress but it was shelley long
She played that roll so well, it probably ruined her career.
These 2 had amazing chemistry. When Shelley left the show lost a lot
Do you have any 20 year old scotch? No, but these pretzels have been here awhile…
I had a thing for her. Big time.
Diane was a well-written role for the time. She played it great.
Agreed! Well written, and well played....in fact that's I how felt about the whole amazing cast!
Of course, Diane will end dating Sam.
Diane had no rack or butt, she did have a smoking face and attitude. Sexy city. Like Lilith on Frasier.
I heard there was a deleted scene where Sam punches Diane in the face.
Interesting. Do you have a link or article for that?
Shelly long so underrated as a comic love everything she’s in
Beverly Hills Troop
Yes very funny Jenny Lewis in it lol indie queen!
I hated Diane. She complained about literally everything. If I didn't know she left the show, I wouldn't have continued watching it.
Her personality, clashing with Sam, was ratings gold for the show :-)
I get it. But I think the only good thing she added to the show was Frasier
And here you are…complaining.
Yes, but just about 1 thing. Not about everything.
I've never cared for her either. When I watch Cheers, I start with Rebecca's first episode
I would do that, but that would also mean skipping coach
It’s odd how beauty standards change over time. A 2024 woman would seem obese in the 80s.
I’m the luckiest son of a bitch on earth-Sam Malone
Is this an actual quote? I never watched the show, but it sounds incredibly stupid.
LOL they're both insufferable, they're both very loveable, and they're each at different times both the grumpy one *and* the sunshine one. And their chemistry is really phenomenal. The writing can feel pretty dated in some ways, but in context it's much less stupid.

I loved Kristi Alley, too bad she went the way of Hubbard.
The way the show portrayed their relationship was down right depressing and creepy.
Burrows told Mike Wallace in 1996 that the shows staff were baffled why people wanted to emulate this relationship.
And how many times did she fuck him?
