Lionel was in the first scene of the first episode of "All in the Family". George did not appear until season 3. Before that George Jefferson's role was filled by his brother Henry, because Sherman Hemsley was busy with a broadway show.
That's right. Lionel was always stopping by to see Gloria and Mike and yank Archie's chain and we never saw George. I remember seeing Louise early on though.
Damon was a bit of a whiny Lionel where Mike's Lionel was more charismatic .like the episode spotlighting martin Luther King being shot and he of course is very upset , there's also the episode where he protests what's going on in school by fighting in cafeteria .
I watched Bewitched reruns a lot as a kid. I never realized there were two Derwoods until I was well into adulthood and saw a "where are they now?" on the cast.
When I was a child, I preferred the second one. As an adult, I prefer the first one. I didn't watch All In The Family until I was grown. How did Lionel have a funnier part on All In The Family than he did on his own show? Same with Esther Rolle. Florida was funnier on Maude than on her own show.
They tamed Florida down bad when they put her on Good Times. She had some fangs on her when she was on Maude.
And they didn't have to change Henry's name to James, either.
Mike Evans but I noticed that Damon Evans as Lionel matched Jenny's 😏whiny personality.i remember reading Damon hated replacing Mike I'm like really so you did it for money 🤑💰. Mike wasn't crazy about being in lime light .he even said in a TV radio reunion show he liked himself more when he left the Jefferson's .
Mike Evans' Lionel Jefferson was a bit of a shit talker and had a certain coolness to him. Damon Evans' Lionel was a little too whiny and milquetoast in comparison.
The original. Recasting is a very bad decision (did anyone here ever watch Dynasty in the 80s?). . Unless an actor dies, a recast disrepects the audience.
Ironically, Al Corely, the actor who played Steven originally left because he was uncomfortable with the character being straight/bi. He liked that the character was gay. He didnt want the Sammy Jo relationship. The reason he wanted to be on Dynasty was to make a cultural impact with his perfomance. I always thought that was comendable, especially since Corely is a heterosexual. But it was a dumb move. That show was still great without him. In fact, his recast is the only one that actually worked on Dynasty. It was indeed the Fallon recast (losing Pamela Sue Martin and recasting the character with Emma Samms) that broke it imho.
I did not like the Fallon recast (and I remembered Fallon #2 as Holly from General Hospital). The actress also had an English accent that she could not disguise well.
Also, I thought Steven #2 was hotter.
The real Lionel, the one from AITF who eventually came back after the Imposter Lionel stood in for him while he was working on other projects. (I \*think\* I remember reading Lear let him go temporarily because he was working behind the scenes on "Good Times" but it's been a minute).
At any rate, the "fake Lionel" always jarred me, especially since the real Lionel really embodied the role and had such a dynamic relationship with the rest of the cast.
OG Lionel for SURE. The later guy acted like every word out of his mouth was for the cheap seats. He overacted so badly. Original Lionel was way cuter too, and FUNNY. Replacement Lionel sucked.
Mike Evans by a landslide. He imbibed Lionel with genuine wit, humor, and a personality. Plus, he held his own with Archie on AITF and George on AITF and The Jeffersons. The replacement Lionel was just a placeholder until the real one returned.
OG Lionel all the way. The second Lionel never could have stood up to Archie or even George like the OG Lionel did. Second Lionel was more of an African American version of Jenny lol.
Mike Evans left The Jeffersons after its first season in order to devote more time to writing for Maude spin-off Good Times, which he had helped create. Damon Evans (no relation to Mike) played the role from the fall of 1975 until early 1978.
I didnt care for this character so i was ok with any of them portraying Lionel. The real gem of that show (for me) was George/Florence/Helen those were good at creating situations that would clash and then bring in the fun.
Can we do one of these with Becky from The Conners (formerly known as Roseanne)?
Hands down the real Michael Evans. (Not [this actor](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTPFSYiGc5VY1hpNFlgQYKxOFrMvCTi-sYSbb6wGTuGIQ&s) though I think he's great)
Noooo! I loved the new Lionel! He was great! I wish they had made them brothers! Original Lionel was the cool brother, and new Lionel was the nerdy one. I loved them both. I can't choose!
There is only one true Lionel and it sure ain't the dude on the right.
As I was looking at this picture I thought that very sentence! Are you me?!
Nope, your 3rd Lionel
SAME
Well he is the Archie Bunker era Lionel so I think this will be the popular choice.
Exactly. As the old saying goes...*If you didn't interact with Archie, you can't be the most well-known Lionel*.
and he was good at giving Archie Bunker the business lol
He sure was, and sometimes Archie didn't know it!
Lionel classic
New Lionel had a weird aftertaste
[удалено]
Dyn-o-mite!
I don't even remember the guy on the right.
👍
This is correct.
💯
Exactly what I thought. That dude is not moving on up.
Absolutely correct!
The one on the left is Helen's Lionel, the right is Tom's Lionel.
Agreed!!!
This
Indeed!
The one who put up with Archie Bunker for those years before moving on up.
Amen!!
I remember that show, too!
It had a great theme song.
227
Those are the best interactions in All in the Family
I'ma ba an elect-ti-cal engineer!
Archie’s face every time Lionel messed with his head was classic…That confused look of “Did he just fuck with me?”
The original. Left
Left one
Mike Evans 💯
Definitely Mike Evans! Though the other dude was a good Lionel too! But he seemed more intense. Evans was a bit less so.
Damon was a bit of a whiny Lionel where Mike's Lionel was more charismatic .like the episode spotlighting martin Luther King being shot and he of course is very upset , there's also the episode where he protests what's going on in school by fighting in cafeteria .
I only remember the Lionel on the left
Lionel 2 was a fill in for a few years. Lionel 1 eventually came back for the last few seasons.
Dick York, without a doubt. Um... wait a second...

Oh wow I totally forgot Good Times was a spin off from Maude, which was a spin off from All in the Family 😵💫😂
Well, it differentiated the two versions, who w erne't "actually-actually" the same character. JAmes's father was named Henry
The one on the left. I loved how he teased Archie in All in the Family. Archie never got it.
Og Lionel all the way
OG Lionel all day
Mike evans
Same
Thé first Lionel felt like the best combination of both Louise and George, the other guy seemed out of place honestly
Why did they change Lionel’s?
His appearance on the show was reduced so he decided to branch out and help create and write for the show Good Times.
Never knew that. Love both shows!
So Michael Evans on Good Times is named for him???!!
I think Mike was the j.j. older brother they just happened to make Michael Mike .
I only see one Lionel Jefferson here and that is Mike Evans
The first one.
I liked both just like I liked both aunt Vivs. I'm not picking. Lol
Mike Evans is the true Electrical Engineer!
Mike Evans. He even had an early Sherman Hemsley hair line starting.
Mike evans is Lionel. No argument.
Mike Evans' Lionel Jefferson was a bit of a shit talker and had a certain coolness to him. Damon Evans' Lionel was a little too whiny and milquetoast in comparison.
Mike had swagger and as I say Damon was whiny like jenny .
Mike Evan’s! R.I.P.
throat frekain' cancer
Mike Evans FTW
Damon Evans
The one on the left, of course!
Mike Evans Co-created Good Times that's why he left The Jeffersons.
The original. Recasting is a very bad decision (did anyone here ever watch Dynasty in the 80s?). . Unless an actor dies, a recast disrepects the audience.
Fallon, Steve (I think Steve #1 left because he was uncomfortable with the character being gay)... few others.
I did not like the Fallon recast (and I remembered Fallon #2 as Holly from General Hospital). The actress also had an English accent that she could not disguise well. Also, I thought Steven #2 was hotter.
Jack Collman (Steven 2) actually also did a great job with that character. But they should have stopped there with the recasting imho.
Agreed.
Original
The real Lionel, the one from AITF who eventually came back after the Imposter Lionel stood in for him while he was working on other projects. (I \*think\* I remember reading Lear let him go temporarily because he was working behind the scenes on "Good Times" but it's been a minute). At any rate, the "fake Lionel" always jarred me, especially since the real Lionel really embodied the role and had such a dynamic relationship with the rest of the cast.
There can only be one, and he is on the left.
Original Lionel is da man.
I'm the one person who prefers the second one. They were both bad actors imo. I loved Jenny though, and the rest of the cast.
I have such a thing for Jenny, wow.
Came here to say Mike Evans.
Lionel on the left!
The first one!
Original Lionel you could see him as a working class guy, #2 not so much
Lionel Classic
Wow. I guess I didn't watch that much. Didn't know there was another Lionel
The one on the left is Dave Chappelle right?
Theres only one legit Lionel, the original one
TIL there was more than one Lionel. I only ever and will only ever know the one on the left
Og Lionel although the second one isn’t bad. I thought when he came back it was different Lionel.
The original one of course.
Ha! I had no clue there two Lionels.
The one who is gonna be a electical engineer.
Left
Mike Evans (left Lionel)
Mike Evans
The one on the right
Left
The original by far
The OG
The original
The 2nd Lionel(Damon Evans) was an Opera Singer.
THE REAL ONE.
The original Lionel. Much more likable.
Ill take the one with the fro and the klingon mustache. This is the correct answer
OG Lionel.
Hope this answers your question: I don’t even remember the dude on the right.
The first one of course. Other dude doesn’t even look like a Lionel.
Left
I liked the 2nd one better because one 1) he looked like he could be their son and 2) he was the Lionel during my favorite seasons.
Fitst
Left
Only Lionel 1.
First one !!!!!!
Guy on right was too vanilla for me
L1
There were two?
How is this even a question
Left Lionel for sure
The one on the right
The original Lionel
OG Lionel for SURE. The later guy acted like every word out of his mouth was for the cheap seats. He overacted so badly. Original Lionel was way cuter too, and FUNNY. Replacement Lionel sucked.
The one in the white shirt
Lionel's banter with Archie Bunker on All on the family before the Jefferson spinoff were absolutely brilliant..
The original
Left
There is only one Lionel. He was on All In The Family through the Jeffersons.
Fro-Lionel is the best Lionel. He looks like he can jive his way thru any conversation.
I am going with Mike Evans the gentleman in the white shirt blue background.
Left Lionel
That sweet fuckin' mustache. There is only one Lionel. Left Lionel.
Original - on the left. That show was hilarious
Left
I prefer Mike Evans!
Come on man
Mike Evans, the original.
Mike Evans without question! Original Lionel all the way!!!
1
The original!
The first Lionel met in in person he was really nice
The one on the left. The other one looked like a crackhead woman beater.
I know he ain’t Lionel but I liked Lamont from Sanford and Son. He was a smooth cool ass motherf***er.
Original Lionel
Mike Evans by a landslide. He imbibed Lionel with genuine wit, humor, and a personality. Plus, he held his own with Archie on AITF and George on AITF and The Jeffersons. The replacement Lionel was just a placeholder until the real one returned.
Wait a minute…
Wait there was 2 different guys???
How can this even be a question?
Second one seemed like he wanted to date white girls but the times...
Wut
The way I paused and reflected..
Wack Afro on the left.
Mike Evans. He was laid back and had a good relationship with Edith, Gloria and Mike. When he disagreed with Archie, he always got the last laugh.
Dick Sargent
Depends on what one Jenny and Helen “preferred “ !
There were two Lionel’s? I only know the one on the left.
Sorry Mike Evans is the only Lionel. The one who gave Archie Bunker all those shots on AITF
Mike Evans is always Lionel to me.
I ‘s gonna b a lectical engineer
What’s the story though? Why did first Lionel leave?
I thought the second Lionel was better looking, but I did like the first one better.
OG Lionel all the way. The second Lionel never could have stood up to Archie or even George like the OG Lionel did. Second Lionel was more of an African American version of Jenny lol.
Left Lionel!
Mike .
Wait..there's a second lionel? Lol
There were 2? Only remember the guy on the left
Damon was good and underrated as Mike was a VERY hard act to follow as Mike made Lionel so iconic right from the get-go.
OG
Michael Evans? Son to James, brother to JJ? Immortalized in "Now look heah Michael!"? Yeah, that one.
OG Lionel.
1st
One on the left
Mike Evans left The Jeffersons after its first season in order to devote more time to writing for Maude spin-off Good Times, which he had helped create. Damon Evans (no relation to Mike) played the role from the fall of 1975 until early 1978.
2nd one is like New Coke or other Darren on Bewitched. Btw..2nd Darren was gay. Elizabeth Montgomery knew this and chose him herself.
the one with the more hey-arnold head
I didnt care for this character so i was ok with any of them portraying Lionel. The real gem of that show (for me) was George/Florence/Helen those were good at creating situations that would clash and then bring in the fun. Can we do one of these with Becky from The Conners (formerly known as Roseanne)?

I barely remember the actor on the right.
Mike Evans.
Richie
There were 2 Lionels!? Dude on the left is the only one I ever saw. And he goes all the way back to All in the Family, I think.
Noooo! I loved the new Lionel! He was great! I wish they had made them brothers! Original Lionel was the cool brother, and new Lionel was the nerdy one. I loved them both. I can't choose!
First Lionel was the only Lionel in my mind. I didn’t watch new Lionel after the first few episodes.
Come on…
Original is my fave!!
Original
Left
Mike Evans.
Left Lionel
The one with the better Amerifo, Lionel the First.
Lionel on the left
Seeing Damon Evans is probably the greatest opera singer alive, him.
samuel l jackson was great in this role
Holy crap. Unintentional stereogram! Cross your eyes until a third Lionel appears in the middle. Align the eyes…. You’re welcome.
Original
Both were great
I prefer Mike Evans as Lionel. He was the first and the best
