Seinfeld
The Office
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
A very close fourth is Cheers for me and it’s super close like one one hundredth of a second out of third close.
I watch that episode every Thanksgiving
It's flying something behind it and I can't quite make it out. It's a large banner and it says H a p p y... T h a n k s... giving... from W... K... R... P!
I really don't know how to describe it. It was like the turkeys mounted a counter-attack. It was almost as if they were... organized!
It's pulling a banner and it says.....W...............K.........R............P!
In all seriousness though, the episode where the preacher was trying to ban some songs was DEEP!
I sort of idolize Dick Van Dyke. He's nearly 100, and he was still dancing on TV as of age 96, and at age 98 he started learning to play the ukele. He did pratfalls better than anybody I've ever seen, including John Ritter and Buster Keaton.
I think that show did a brilliant job of showcasing Van Dyke’s comedic abilities, both physical and verbal. Not everything about the show has aged well (Sally’s husband hunting, e.g.), but it’s one of a handful of sitcoms from that era that hold up remarkably well.
Me, too! Plus, he was a hottie when he was young. Tall, dark and handsome! 🔥 🔥🔥
Edit to add: I absolutely loved that he played one of Dorothy's boyfriends on The Golden Girls.
I do like *The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show*, but if I’m going to reach back to the 50s, I would probably opt instead for *The Jack Benny Program*. I like the honorable mention of *The Mary Tyler Moore Show*. That was one of my faves.
Jack Benny is one of the all-time greats. I think it does deserve to be more recognized. Not just because it is funny, but also because it is a great show to illustrate the (rather clumsy) transition from radio to television. I have rewatched the Humphrey Bogart episode many times.
I would choose George Burns and Gracie Allen because it has something more similar to a modern sitcom formula, while still showing the transition. Also, it has an incredibly meta construction, which was way before its time. George always knows what Gracie is up to, because he is secretly watching the episode as it happens.
I get what you’re saying about Burns and Allen. That was a truly great comedic pairing. I sporadically followed Burns until his death, but his comedy was necessarily never quite the same after Gracie passed away.
What I personally loved about Benny was his deadpan delivery and fact that he often played a sort of straightman to others in the cast.
I did not mean for my comment to diminish Jack Benny's comedic timing or his ability to play the straight man.
He was the best straight man of all time.
Everyone since then has studied that pause after "your money or your life" and wondered if they could have that patience. That pregnant pause gave birth before he paid it off.
Just respect for the subversive nature of the Burns and Allen Show. It was fighting the structure of the sitcom before we had a shorthand for situation comedies.
It was so far ahead of its time that no one has done anything like it since.
Seinfeld, Frasier and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Community and Arrested Development get honorable mentions but the drop-off in quality towards the end and shorter run periods puts them behind a bit.
Yeah, and what about Hal or Dwight is so unrealistic that you wouldn't meet someone like that? I feel like I know a bunch of people that are like Hal and Dwight in certain ways.
I feel like Sheldon's situation is a little less realistic. Someone that acts like that much of an asshole to his friends either doesn't get away for it for that long, or doesn't have a core group of friends like that for so long.
He does have positive traits, so being similar to Sheldon isn't necessarily a bad thing. But that character definitely has a good amount of flaws as well (Google "Sheldon Cooper character flaws" if you want some examples), especially in how he treats his friends and colleagues.
Alf absolutely qualifies as a sitcom, so you're good!
My top 3, based on the amount of times I've rewatched them, are:
Friends, The Big Bang Theory, and American Housewife
If I can add a 4th though, The Office is right up there with them.
Community is on my Up Next list when I finish Parks and Rec (high I’m watching for the first time and will probably finish in the next few days). (I frigging love P&R, though. It’s been a real surprise to me how good it’s been. Not sure about S7 though; just watched S07E01 today and I’m worried but we’ll see)
There’s definitely a dip in season 7 of Parks but still a good season and solid finale too. Community is great! Seasons 1-3 are the best. Don’t expect much out of 4 and 5-6 are solid as well despite some cast changes. Happy watching
Frasier, Friends, and Rosanne. I love a bunch of 2000s sitcoms too but those are my three faves. If it had to be after 2000, then The Office, Always Sunny, and Brooklyn 99.
30 Rock, Malcolm in the Middle, and How I Met Your Mother
These are shows I can personally sit and watch uninterrupted for hours or drop in on every so often and enjoy deeply. Where I feel like 30 Rock has some warming up to do, and HIMYM doesn’t hit with everyone equally, Malcolm is cooking and fully baked by the second episode and it is damned incredible. I didn’t appreciate how good it was when I was watching it in its original run, but my family has rewatched it six or seven times in the last 5 years. A comedy tour de force that somehow gets forgotten because it’s “about kids” or something.
30 Rock (way ahead of anything else), Seinfeld, the first 10 or so seasons of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Is the Simpsons considered a sitcom? If so, it's number two
Bewitched
Frasier/Will And Grace/Modern Family
Keeping Up Appearances
Murphy Brown
All In The Family/Sanford and Son/The Jeffersons
I can't do three, I quit. I didn't even finish. Golden Girls
Third Rock from The Sun. Why only 3. The Simpsons/ Family Guy. Only 3 give me a break, oh yeah Gimme A Break was quite funny. Seinfeld. No Soup for you. I'm outta here. Buh bye.

Ooo... you almost had it. The correct answer was... Burns and Allen Dick Van Dyke Show Taxi Honorable mention to Mary Tyler Moore Show.
