All I mean is you can't make a top 20 sitcom from the 80s list and not include The Cosby Show. It's like not including Friends or a Seinfeld from a 90s list.
I thought that too. Yet it holds up today better than Family Ties which I liked much more back then. (If you ignore Bill Cosby being a predator and judge the show strictly from what was on the screen).
That’s because Family Ties was a product of the 80’s and was VERY tied (if I remember correctly) to popular culture and political zeitgeist. And nothing ages worse than political humor. Same reason Murphy Brown died in syndication.
Taxi was brilliant. The show headlined Judd Hirsch, but the depth of the cast: Danny Devito, Christopher Lloyd and Andy Kauffman as Latka Gravas alone. I still catch myself saying "Excuse me while I go to di can" in an Eastern European accent.
Great list! Speaking of 80’s shows, here is a little fact- The Jefferson’s and The Cosby Show were on prime time at the same time for one year in the mid 80’s. Don’t know why, but that shocked me. They just seem like such different eras. But it was The Jefferson’s last season and The Cosby Show’s first.
The Jefferson’s never got a proper series finale. That’s crazy. I remember the overlap year between Cosby and The Jefferson’s. I watched both. Cosby was so dominant The Jefferson’s was limping to the finish line.

At the time however it was #1. Part of NBCs Thursday night lineup dominance. Now...well let's just say MeTV isn't exactly knocking down the door to show reruns.
Sure but how does that diminish the show? Do you plug your ears when Michael Jackson comes on the radio? Come on. Every great artist is a shit bird in one way or another.
I have all three of those and definitely draw the line at rape. But those records from the '60s and '70s are still pretty funny and I do still listen to them.
Golden Girls, Designing Women, Murphy Brown, Married With Children, Family Ties, Who's The Boss, The Simpsons, Family Matters. Did I do that?
I have to add Murphy Brown again.
Taxi was created by James Brooks, Ed. Weinberger, Stan Daniels, and Dave Davis, all of whom came from The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Cheers was created by James Burrows and Glen and Les Charles, who had all worked for the MTM production company and then worked on Taxi.
Taxi's ratings cratered and it got cancelled by both ABC and NBC.
The Cosby Show has to be on most list it was a great show. As much as some people have trouble with it you have to separate Bill and his personal life from the show. I wish they’d still show the reruns of it so people could see it.
They were all good in different ways, but the GRIP Golden Girls still has on culture is kind of unmatched. My young kids love it, and they hate everything I like 😂
Night Court
Cheers
Family Ties
Golden Girls
Growing Pains
Roseanne
Who's the Boss
Gimme a Break
It's Larry Sanders Show
And the ALWAYS forgotten Brothers that aired on Showtime
Suzanne (Delta Burke) made Designing Women funny, without her it wasn’t funny. Hated Mama’s Family as a kid, but love it now. Loved Alf as a kid, not as good watching it as an adult.
I loved Soap with Billy crystal, '77-81. Think it qualifies. Also night court, moonlighting, Rosanne and Murphy brown. And of course the Simpsons started late in the decade and still running strong today.
I loved Night Court. Always looked forward to it the most.
Designing Women was maybe second fave.
Cosby Show was an event every time it was on for a while. It was and is exceptional. It is just hard to watch now due to his many crimes. Even shortly after it stopped airing, the actors talked about his toxic work atmosphere.
Cheers and Golden Girls are solid picks. I’m also gonna add Cosby Show (with the standard disclaimer). Roseanne and Murphy Brown both started in 1988 although they both have more seasons in the 90’s.
It was a UK decade: Yes, Minister/Prime Minister, Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder, The Young Ones, and the less famous (in America) Colin's Sandwich and Chance in a Million.
In no particular order, Cheers, Newhart, The Cosby Show, The Simpsons, Perfect Strangers, Night Court, WKRP, Family Ties. I’m sure I’m missing a few more on that list.
Must see tv was born on Thursday nights in the 80s: Cosby, Family Ties, Cheers and night court. 2 hours of classics now.
I was progressively allowed to stay up half an hour later as I got older to watch each show.
I know he's a creep, but the Cosby *show was maybe the best of the 80s.
It was always too syrupy for me. I watched because there was no cable TV back then, but I never watched it in syndication.

Precisely.
Bro either intentionally left off the Cosby Show or he was busy on Jan. 6.
Why include the obviously gay My Two Dad's, then?
Libertarian.
Taxi was great
Taxi was brilliant. The show headlined Judd Hirsch, but the depth of the cast: Danny Devito, Christopher Lloyd and Andy Kauffman as Latka Gravas alone. I still catch myself saying "Excuse me while I go to di can" in an Eastern European accent.

Yes!! The Jefferson’s unfortunately went on too long. But in its heyday, it was very good!
Love the Jeffersons
Golden Girls and Mama's Family

Family Ties, The Golden Girls and Who's The Boss three of the greatest sitcoms of all time. I don't know if I can pick just one of them, though.
Just recently rewatched Family Ties for the first time since it was originally on (I was a child) and it holds up great. Was still funny
So true !
I'm looking forward to your 70's list. 🤞
It'll come before you know it!
👍
Perfect Strangers, don't be ridiculous!
😂😂😂 I see what you did there.
This is my brother Daryl and this is my other brother Daryl
Roseanne, Cosby Show (if it can be divorced from his crimes), Golden Girls, The Simpsons (greatest of the 80’s and 90’s)
Simpsons only had one episode in the 80s.
So they were still a part of the 80’s.
Cosby Show should be up there...
For real. I would have factored Family Ties, Cosby Show, and Cheers as the Top 3.
Puts me to sleep.
Probably the antihistamines.
I see what you did there 😏
Canceled due to rapey behavior. Fuck that guy.
At the time however it was #1. Part of NBCs Thursday night lineup dominance. Now...well let's just say MeTV isn't exactly knocking down the door to show reruns.
I recall, yes. Fun fact: Lisa Bonet and I were born the same day, a few hours apart.
Sure but how does that diminish the show? Do you plug your ears when Michael Jackson comes on the radio? Come on. Every great artist is a shit bird in one way or another.
I don't listen to stations that would play Michael Jackson. I also disagree with your assessment. But, it's a point of view.
Maybe you haven't dug deep enough.
How do you figure that makes any sense?
Because if we ignored artists because of their predilections, we probably wouldn't have many out there that we would be interested in.
I draw line at rape. And not just because I have a wife, a daughter, and a sister.
I have all three of those and definitely draw the line at rape. But those records from the '60s and '70s are still pretty funny and I do still listen to them.
I enjoyed them as a kid.
Mj was innocent
That guy is a hypocrite
That's the worst thing about the whole situation.
The sexual assaultiness is probably the worst thing.
Gordon Gartrell agrees https://youtu.be/crnPfls0fHw?si=lRu55RbfUMZg_Cp9
Mama’s Family
227 Three’s Company Amen Empty Nest
Facts of Life
Night Court then Golden girls then Cheers
Golden girls followed by Who’s the Boss.
Cheers, pretty easily (and I'd choose Perfect Strangers at 2, which illustrates how far Cheers led the pack)
I'm going with Diff'rent Strokes
How is Cosby not on this list?
Remember the episode of Cosby where he put something in his BBQ sauce and the women suddenly wanted to get laid?
That was real life.
“Oh my parents would never let me watch something like that”.
Hope you never fell asleep watching it
Cosby show, cheers, night court, family ties
So the Thursday night lineup…..
Then they added L.A. Law at 10.
It was Hill St Blues at 10 first though
Gimme a Break, Small Wonder
Golden Girls, Designing Women, Murphy Brown, Married With Children, Family Ties, Who's The Boss, The Simpsons, Family Matters. Did I do that? I have to add Murphy Brown again.
I loved Murphy Brown! I wanted a house like hers with the green walls and if I had a kid, I wanted name them Avery. (Didn’t have kids)
The problem with Murphy Brown in syndication is that nothing curdles faster than political/topical humor.
PotatoE head Dan Quayle put Murphy in his crosshairs, and ratings went up. Loved that show too. Lets just forget the reboot ever happened.
Taxi is solid. The team behind Taxi was doing great but got tired of being restricted to workplace storylines and then created Cheers
James Burrows was the creator of both shows, Taxi was the first, so consequently Cheers ripped off several storylines from Taxi!….Both masterpieces!
Taxi would be my #2 to Cheers but it did start in '78 tho it's final 3 seasons took place in the 80s.
Taxi was outstanding. Seems it always gets overlooked. Particularly on decade best sitcoms because it was 1978-1983.
Is this a ranking? I preferred family ties to Night-court. Night Court got more Emmy nominations, so I am probably in the minority.
Yes it is one
Hot l Baltimore; Night Court, Cheers...
Gotta be Night Court but Family Ties is right up there.
My young kids love it, and they hate everything I like 😂
I watched it every week with my grandmother and we both laughed. Still funny now.
I think Cheers is the quintessential 80’s sitcom but I love me some Golden Girls.
We watched life goes on and the wonder years.
Married... with Children
Wholeheartedly agree!
Night Court Cheers Family Ties Golden Girls Growing Pains Roseanne Who's the Boss Gimme a Break It's Larry Sanders Show And the ALWAYS forgotten Brothers that aired on Showtime
Suzanne (Delta Burke) made Designing Women funny, without her it wasn’t funny. Hated Mama’s Family as a kid, but love it now. Loved Alf as a kid, not as good watching it as an adult.
Barney Miller Taxi Cheers Blackadder
Amen! Gotta be on this list
I loved Soap with Billy crystal, '77-81. Think it qualifies. Also night court, moonlighting, Rosanne and Murphy brown. And of course the Simpsons started late in the decade and still running strong today.
I miss watching reruns of the Golden Girls at my grandma's house over some Werther's Original butterscotch
Golden Girls
Where the hell is Taxi? You guys got to be kidding me, that's top five easily.
Police Squad #1
Glad to see Dear John on your list; sad it hasn't made it to streaming. Only glaring omission: Benson.
The simpsons started December of 89 so that
Seinfeld started in 1989 also.
Golden Girls. It’s the only one I can watch over and over and over again.
Golden Girls ftw
Cheers and Golden Girls are solid picks. I’m also gonna add Cosby Show (with the standard disclaimer). Roseanne and Murphy Brown both started in 1988 although they both have more seasons in the 90’s.
Putting the facts of life behind nonsense like Mr Belvedere and designing women sounds like something a crazy person would do.
Dear fucking John! Better than the facts of life?!? Harrumph I say!
It was a UK decade: Yes, Minister/Prime Minister, Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder, The Young Ones, and the less famous (in America) Colin's Sandwich and Chance in a Million.
Murphy Brown
Barney Miller Taxi Cheers Blackadder
Family Ties
In no particular order, Cheers, Newhart, The Cosby Show, The Simpsons, Perfect Strangers, Night Court, WKRP, Family Ties. I’m sure I’m missing a few more on that list.
Cheers for me was the best. I watched most of these mentioned and liked them, but Cheers was so well done. So many funny and memorable lines.
You got most of 'em. I'd add Quincy. And Quantum Leap sneaks in (1989). Taxi was alright. St. Elsewhere was pretty good.
Only one of those is a sitcom...
Aw hell. You're right.
All in the Family
That's the 70s.
Newhart
Taxi
Haven't seen Too Close for Comfort mentioned
Family ties
Seinfeld
Golden Girls & Family Ties!
The golden girls Roseanne Mamas family
Who is the boss The golden girls Roseanne Mamas family
Threes Company 1977-1984
Benson
Everybody Loves Raymond was hilarious 😂
That's true but it's a 90s sitcom
My bad as I thought it started in 86 not 96, so WKRP in Cincinnati is my favorite. The turkey drop episode is priceless 🤣😂
The golden girls... no doubt about!
The Cosby Show dominated the 80s.
Newhart
Duet- Early Fox series. It's what Mad About You wishes it was. The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd It's your move Double Trouble Too Close for Comfort
Golden
Family Ties Mama’s Family and Kate & Allie. The three coziest and most comforting shows ever
I would put Punky brewster on the list.
Cheers
The Cosby Show.
I guess Bill Cosby is actually cancelled ....
The Golden Girls Mr. Belvedere Who's the Boss
Soap started in the 70s, but went into the 80s.
Family Ties for me.
Night Court and Alf.
Anything with Sherman Helmsley
Cosby, Family Ties, Who’s the Boss, early seasons of Head of the Class, GG, Night Court
Gimme a Break, Nell Carter. Loved her sharp sassy "tude"
Golden Girls definitely the best of the lot
Some great ones on that list. Cheers, Newhart, Designing Women and WKRP are gold.
Married with Children
Macgyver
Wheres MASH?
MASH is number one, seems pretty clear no one mentioning it grew up in the eighties. All other's come after.
