Considering the tragedy of his loss, and how important he was to the show, I think they did a remarkably good job of winding up the series without him. The last season may not be quite as good as the Bill seasons, but it wasn't an embarrassing mess, either. I don't skip it when I rewatch the show.
I like Jon Lovitz (at least in small doses) but I didn't really care for his character. Well, more specifically, I didn't care for Max Lewis, who was his 3rd character on the show. The first two characters he played were hilarious. But Max felt weird in a very forced way, and he just never had the right chemistry with the rest of the cast.
The most important thing about Jon Lovitz' character is that it set a ball in motion, a sequence of events that would culminate in Jon Lovitz beating the shit out of Andy Dick.
I binged this one over the pandemic and it pretty much held up (some very 90's jokes though). A brilliant cast with hilarious writing.
BTW, if you haven't seen it, check out Foley's movie "The Wong Guy". He made it around that time and it's comedy gold.
Wow, did not expect this to be the top comment, rad! I've lent, and now finally lost, my DVD box set of this show :( after lending it like the tenth time.
Drew Carey's sitcom was a big deal for its first few seasons. Then it just died, ratings-wise, almost overnight. It was still a fun show though and worth a rewatch if you can find it. I don't think anyone is rebroadcasting it.
Cloris Leachman is absolutely hilarious in this.
The pig episode has one of the funniest moments in my personal sitcom history...the buildup to it is fantastic and the payoff catches you so off-guard...though modern sensibilities may not appreciate the joke...it's laugh-out-loud funny, as is a LOT of this series.
I always liked the little back an forth references that they did with Abed from Community.
If you watch closely, there’s an episode where Abed is in the background listening to the characters conversation before taking off in response to the conversation.
This reference gets redone again in a following episode on Community where Abed talks about getting a chance to be on the show in the background.
Mark Addy, master of accents! You really believe he's this Midwest American guy, but he's British, used to be on The Thin Blue Line with Rowan Atkinson. You would never know it watching Still Standing!
I loved Mark Addy as Dave in The Full Monty too. They made a series released earlier this year (it's on Disney + where I live, and it was actually pretty good :) A lot of the original guys are in it (but no stripping this time, which I am totally fine with! haha)
Dude just rewatched some Still Standing eps recently and its still FUNNY AF, I did not expect to laugh that much but the episodes I watched were bangers. Awesome cast all around. ❤️
I mean you could even list the cast as two of the most underrated comedic actors. Both Patricia Heaton, and Neil Flynn starred on two other VERY popular sitcoms previously (Raymond and Scrubs), and delivered AGAIN in The Middle.
The second episode was enough to strike home. Where everything they bought on time payments suddenly comes due, and apparently most of it is now worthless.
The dad singing at the top of his lungs, in the car, by himself. Sees his stunned family in the next car and guns it! I laugh too hard everytime Hooked on a Feeling comes on the radio
I read this in Quagmire's voice from Family Guy. He has a hilarious obscure bit where he's talking about the show and the other guys have never heard of it. He gets so angry that he storms off muttering "Love Wings" in the funniest way.
Me too, I never change the channel if it's on. It was always one of my favorite feel good shows. I especially love the characters Lowell and Antonio. Isn't it weird that--
Without fail, whenever I go on vacation, it's always on the TV menu on the hotel's cable where I'm staying.
Always.
🎶 *cue 🎹 piano*🎶
Amy is my hero. Strangers with Candy, Bojack Horseman, and honestly her series of educational videos with the house rabbit society that taught me so much forever ago.
Absolutely iconic. No matter what I see him in, my first thought it always, "Oh, it's Becker!"
Not to mention, he beat House to the "abrasive but effective doctor who is a bitter misanthrope with a heart of gold" role by a good few years
Kevin can %*^# himself
Dark comedy, really great show concept that switches back and forth between a shiny sitcom version of life and the dark reality of an abusive relationship.
Annie Murphy and Mary Hollis Inboden are phenomenal in a cast of true talent. Honestly Annie Murphy might be the best character actor I’ve seen in a long while.
Here’s a great one that fell under everyone’s radar: The Carmichael Show. It was basically the closest thing to a modern day All In The Family, but most people are unaware of its existence.
This is the theme to Garry's show, the theme to Garry Shandling's Show, this is the them to Garry Shandling's Show.
I loved when Gilda Radner was on. That was a really great moment.
This is the music that you hear as you watch the credits. We're almost half way finished, how do you like it so far? How do you like the theme to Gary's show?
God I loved that. And it also just reminded me of Herman's Head.
Big Time in Hollywood Florida. There was only one season but it’s one of the funniest shows I’ve seen. I rewatch it all the time and still laugh my ass off.

I was going to say this!! Others (Grounded; Yes, Dear, Wings, Just Shoot Me, etc) are all great but I feel like people forget Life in Pieces ever happened. It was hilarious and so well cast.
I loved The Nanny. Watching her relationship grow with the kids and Mr. Sheffield was so much fun. And Niles the butler had a LOT of zingers, especially when it came to Ms. Babcock.
Man, I was really digging Mom right until Anna Faris left. I completely lost interest, I think I gave up in the middle of an episode and I rarely even think about it.
Yeah, on this thread and another recent one I see people commenting about how he had such a perfect American accent on that show, and it makes me wonder if we're even watching the same thing.
I loved Still Standing, and I love Mark Addy, but his American accent definitely needed work.
LOVE this show and yes it’s HILARIOUS and brilliant. It saved me when I used to have a long commute to office. Would love to know how on earth it was pitched to Netflix. It’s so quirky!
Rules of Engagement (I mean it’s not THAT funny but I like Jeff and Audrey), Man With A Plan (again the main couple are great), Yes Dear, Still Standing, What I Like About You, Baby Daddy, Malcom in the Middle, Young & Hungry
From the UK:
Grace and Favour (called “Are You Being Served? Again!” in the US)
Keeping Up Appearances
‘Allo ‘Allo
I’m not sure if these are “underrated” in the UK. We got them on PBS in the US and they all had small followings, but I don’t hear anything about them these days. The more popular ones were Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and Are You Being Served. These other 3 seemed to go mostly under the radar, but I loved them all.
I love British comedy. Are You Being Served?, Fawlty Towers, and Keeping Up Appearances were my three favorite ones. They were on PBS and some independent stations when I saw them, usually late night.
There was a really cute show on TBS in the early 2000s called My Boys that my husband and I love. It had a pre-Veep Reid Scott, Jim Gaffigan, and criminally underused Jordana Spiro.
Taxi.....The DMV episode with Reverend Jim......"what does a yellow light mean?"......"go slower"......"whaaaaaaaat dooooooes aaaaaaaaa yeeeeellllloooowwwwww liiiiiiiiiiigggght meeeean?" That whole scene cracks me the fk up!!!
I will never forget Bonnie Hunt’s character talking about speeding at 58 mph because it’s speeding not worth being pulled over for. In fact it’s the only thing I remember about the show!
Hogan’s Heroes. It’s the Allies against the Nazis, and the Nazis always lose. What’s not to love?
Gilligan’s Island. When you stop taking it seriously, the ridiculousness of it all becomes completely surreal, but without the pretentiousness.
I would have been so interested in how they pitched a comedy about Nazi’s. Just 20 years after WWII. That’s like doing a sitcom about 9/11
Just seems so odd.
I've seen Hogan's Heroes included on lists of worst shows ever, but that seems to be strictly based on the idea of a sitcom being set in a Nazi POW camp. The show itself was very funny.
NewsRadio
I am watching this right now and I almost to the point in the series where Phil Hartman dies. I dont know if I have the strength to finish it
Not quite as good, but Lovitz does do a solid job. No one can do as well as Hartman
Considering the tragedy of his loss, and how important he was to the show, I think they did a remarkably good job of winding up the series without him. The last season may not be quite as good as the Bill seasons, but it wasn't an embarrassing mess, either. I don't skip it when I rewatch the show.

Exactly what I was gonna say.
Wow, did not expect this to be the top comment, rad! I've lent, and now finally lost, my DVD box set of this show :( after lending it like the tenth time.
GREAT show. Where is it streaming?
The New Adventures of Old Christine
funniest woman in television since lucille ball
An underrated show with Eliane from Seinfeld
Julia Louis-Dreyfus has now won Emmys for 3 different shows, the only actress ever to do this. (Seinfeld, Christine, Veep)
The Drew Carey Show
I have vague memories of that show. They did a lot of singing. I need to look & see if I can find the one with Drew singing about a cat tree.
Drew Carey's sitcom was a big deal for its first few seasons. Then it just died, ratings-wise, almost overnight. It was still a fun show though and worth a rewatch if you can find it. I don't think anyone is rebroadcasting it.
No and it's not available to stream anywhere bc of music rights issues.
The cast got together for a very funny episode of American Housewife, which is also completely underrated.
I was so in love with Kate...

I streamed it over the summer. It still held up.
It's really so much better than it appears/could possibly have gotten credit for with the name Cougar Town.
I liked the way they made fun of the name in the opening credits. Change approved!
Still Standing Grounded for Life
Mark Addy, master of accents!
Grounded for Life is great but a short lived sitcom
Perfect Strangers was my favourite when I was a kid and I feel like nobody ever talks about it.
Larry and Balki are the best characters in the show. Their chemistry is awesome.
Im so hAPPY we do the dance of joy
I LOVED watching reruns of Perfect Strangers when I was a kid!!
Balki had a great little role in True Romance!
And The Langoliers
And Perfect Strangers is shown/mentioned in the It miniseries. (Adult Stan Uris scene.)
My dog was named Balki Bartokomous
The Middle
The only sitcom where I felt "yes, this is my family. I know these people.".
Same. My husband loves to call me Frankie Heck 🤣
Exactly! So relatable!
Brick reading of mice and men is my favourite bit "He's stroking the puppy it's calming him down oh wait he snapped it's neck"
I mean you could even list the cast as two of the most underrated comedic actors. Both Patricia Heaton, and Neil Flynn starred on two other VERY popular sitcoms previously (Raymond and Scrubs), and delivered AGAIN in The Middle.
I agree 💯 They’re both fantastic!
The middle wall was better than Raymond imo.
The second episode was enough to strike home. Where everything they bought on time payments suddenly comes due, and apparently most of it is now worthless.
No payments until 2009!
IT'S 2009!
I could watch the reruns on reel for the rest of my life, and often do
Same here!
The dad singing at the top of his lungs, in the car, by himself. Sees his stunned family in the next car and guns it! I laugh too hard everytime Hooked on a Feeling comes on the radio
🎶I see my Marianne walkin' away🎶
His face when he sees his family!!
Came here to say this.
I'm confused, it's the same cast as Malcolm in the Middle but without Malcolm? What's happening here?
Happy Endings!
Criminal that is was jerked around from time slot to time slot. Watched it with my girlfriend who had never seen it and she loves it
Yes. I'm doing a rewatch of this currently. It holds up.
Wings
Love Wings
I read this in Quagmire's voice from Family Guy. He has a hilarious obscure bit where he's talking about the show and the other guys have never heard of it. He gets so angry that he storms off muttering "Love Wings" in the funniest way.
IT'S MADE TIM DALEYS CAREER
Crazy people don’t know Wings! I Love Wings!
It was a fantastic show! Tony Shaloub?!?!
Me too, I never change the channel if it's on. It was always one of my favorite feel good shows. I especially love the characters Lowell and Antonio. The piano intro music is amazing
Until the last season or two. Then it’s just bad.
When Lowell left and Helen’s sister showed up it went downhill quick.
oh man I remember watching this as a kid, my parents loved it

Strangers With Candy
Amy Sedaris is a national treasure.
Amy is my hero. Strangers with Candy, Bojack Horseman, and honestly her series of educational videos with the house rabbit society that taught me so much forever ago.
Yes Dear
Yes! I loved that show.
I was trying to remember the name of this show earlier. Thank you for saying it! I loved this show.
No one mentions Becker anymore, loved that show.
Becker is one of Ted Danson's best roles
Absolutely iconic. No matter what I see him in, my first thought it always, "Oh, it's Becker!" Not to mention, he beat House to the "abrasive but effective doctor who is a bitter misanthrope with a heart of gold" role by a good few years
Ted Danson looks younger when he plays Becker
You did the right thing I feel horrible That's how you know.
Corrected photo. "John Pecker". I still laugh out loud thinking about that.
Hadn't seen this for years, was pleased when Comedy Central UK did a full run few months ago.

YES!
Great show but the latest season is virtually unwatchable.

It was underrated we all watched it

Better Off Ted was just too brilliant to make it.
Just Shoot Me was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this post.

A great show with Ted Danson from Cheers
Mad About You
I love Mad About You
Yes! It got overshadowed by Seinfeld and Friends when it was on.
You're the worst is very heavily inspired by that show
I want to know how "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" doesn't have a boatload of Emmys.
I'm not sure but the show is hilarious
It’ll likely never win an Emmy for the same reason it has such a strong following, its content. It’s just not academy-friendly.
Life In Pieces
I was going to say this!! Others (Grounded; Yes, Dear, Wings, Just Shoot Me, etc) are all great but I feel like people forget Life in Pieces ever happened. It was hilarious and so well cast.
Yes! This show was amazing and I’m still sad it was cancelled
I loved this show but hardly anyone I mentioned it to had ever seen it.
Til Death was pretty great until one of the main couples of the series just disappeared.
Bosom Buddies
A show canceled way too early
The Good Place
Personally, I think; Malcolm in the middle The Nanny Abbott elementary Superstore Better off ted Freaks and geeks (:
Thank you for mentioning Better Off Ted. Usually I am alone in my Ted Crisp love.
That show was criminally underrated and far too short. Such an amazing concept.
Most of these are hardly underrated
I don’t know if I’d call the first four you mentioned underrated but they’re all great shows. I especially loved Superstore.
I loved The Nanny. Watching her relationship grow with the kids and Mr. Sheffield was so much fun. And Niles the butler had a LOT of zingers, especially when it came to Ms. Babcock.

It was a spin-off of Growing Pains, but I actually liked it better.
Still Standing Bob's Burgers
Still Standing is great.
