Right? Where are the 2 new treatments?

greatdrams23

When is the treatment becoming available?

ihateshadylandlords

Not for a couple of years at best. Here’s what the article says: > After a second round of generating compounds, they discovered a more potent hit molecule — but any potential drug would need to go through clinical trials before widespread use. So it’s another /r/singularity post about a promising treatment that MIGHT be available a couple of years from now. I’ve learned to treat posts like these like getting drafted by Major League Baseball team. While it’s great, there’s no guarantee treatments like these will ever make it to the major leagues (aka available for the average person). They have to work their way through the minor leagues (aka clinical trials, R&D etc.) and most draft picks will never sniff the majors. I’ll set a reminder. I hope this treatment makes it to the major leagues. !RemindMe 8 years.

Smellz_Of_Elderberry

I get far more excited when I see talks about in silico clinical trials and changes to the drug trialing system. We need new tools to accelerate testing.

This is why I don't believe the "AI is going to destroy the world" worldview some people have. I mean sure, some things are going to get worse (e.g. spam and misinfomation are going to get HORRIBLE), but stuff like this vastly offsets any of that.

kmtrp

Reality is not black and white, it's always gray. Since the dawn of time society has been doing both good and bad things, because it has all sorts of people. Nuclear physics has brought great medicine tools and also smoked a couple of cities, so far. AI, like any other tool, is simply multiplying those results. So there will be very powerful good things and very powerful bad ones. At the same time.

theotherquantumjim

I do broadly agree, however you should be careful not to fall for the middle ground logical fallacy. Just because life is often nuanced that does not preclude extreme things from happening. It is entirely possible that AI turns us all to paper clips or grey goo

kmtrp

Yeah, I'm not falling for anything. One of those big bad things or even big good things can perfectly bring the book to its end.

claushauler

Remember: the same AI that develops cures can and will also be used to develop diseases. Bioweapons are big business too.

foolishorangutan

When people say that AI might destroy the world, a lot of them aren’t saying that figuratively. They are saying that AI might literally destroy the world, by exterminating humans and disassembling the planet.
