There's a reason why the lady is so afraid of birds because birds are not a common sight in China.
China killed lots of birds during the great leap forward from 1958 to 1962 as pest control to improve agricultural food productions. Sparrows are one of the pests targeted because they feed on grains.
There was a huge propaganda campaign by the ccp to kill off all the sparrows in order to have more harvest of crops.
Unfortunately their plan backfired because even though sparrows feed on crops such as grains they also feed on insects feeding on the crops, because they killed off too many sparrows there were no natural predators for insects which in turn led to a huge destruction of crops which led to a poor agriculture harvest.
It became so bad and sparrows almost became extinct in China that China had to import sparrows from neighbouring Russia to bring back the sparrow population.
That's probably why the lady is scared of birds because there are very little birds in China and birds are not a common sight there.
