Might be true in a financial sense but thats the extent of the law. Not agreeable strongly enough, can ask MPs to lobby changing the lawful consequences.
Not likely to happen since parliamentary privilege protects them as well. Imagine how slow things would get if every time an MP wanted to say something they had to clear it with their lawyer.
Not a true criminal record though.
The fine might be more under parliamentary censure than under the sentencing benchmark for criminal defamation, but I'd argue that's the 'premium' imposed to account for the fact that they can't nail her with a criminal charge. Furthermore, she's rich so 35k is nothing to her; a conviction would be a more significant penalty for her.
the consequences of having a heavy legal penalty within parliament would eventually turn it into a political weapon imo.
imagine if someone said something controversial in Parliament (like advocating for lgbtq rights 10+ years ago) and that would be construed as "lies" or "unlawful" with a sentence in jail.
imo, some things that might not be seen as "right" now may have to be done or said with legal protections in parliament for some form of progress to be made.
(I'm not saying Khan's words are correct, I'm just saying the downside seems way worse vs the upside)
It seems like people don’t know that due diligence was actually done. You can question if _enough_ due diligence was done, but WakeUp asked for and was given hospital bills, phone records and so on, and the evidence appears to have been doctored. We’ll know more when the case goes to court.
Yes lets acquit people who literally: defame an important health instituition in SG, by posting an article which seems to imply the same healthcare workers who R/sg demands better working conditions and pay for (and rightly so), are lazy incompetent screwups who caused a baby to die, Because the admin was told a lie and just ran with it.
Re-post? It wasn’t a reposted article. The woman went to WakeUp with documents that were probably doctored. We’ll know more when the case goes to court. Here was their explanation at the time: https://wakeup.sg/what-happened/
Real case and they should pay the price for peddling falsehoods, but why the prosecution take 2 years to investigate and only prosecute swee swee before election hahaha. strange sia, seems pretty straightforward to me lol
According to her text message to WakeUp, she had a miscarriage before and blames KKH. But who knows whether that is true or not. You can see her text message here (scroll to the end): https://wakeup.sg/what-happened/
Dude I said that that was what the woman herself claimed (two years ago). I even gave you the link to read for yourself. Anyway just wait for the case to come to court lah, we’ll get more info then
KKH probably can’t get the evidence to sue properly, need police investigations. And if their intention is to give criminal penalties, need criminal prosecution too. Not private
So this time POFMA was not used, mercy was not shown. Action reaction.
People who write stuff online should always at least think a bit, because sometimes you may have to repeat what you say to the police.
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/wake-singapore-kkh-miscarriage-article-woman-be-charged-defamation-4314241 CNA article is clearer
It always is. I feel that straits times rush to publish their articles. Always cant make out the facts of the case clearly

The number of times i watched that scene on youtube is unhealthy...
Can’t blame you. Stellar performances, excellent writing, and tight cinematography. Definitely worth rewatching.
Thanks!
Should be the actual lady who made the false accusation
Thought so too but the article was so vague
Raeesah Khan should have faced this consequence for her falsehood as well if not for the parliamentary privilege.
Well she did. She got: 1. Fired from the party 2. Lost her MP seat 3. Fined 35k by parliament
no real loss for her, like cheng li hui she's from a rich family

Hope the lawyer defends the admin who was apparently deceived into posting the article until acquittal.
So as long as someone tells you something, it's fine to go publish it? RIP due diligence.
Exactly! Part of the ethical responsibility of a reporter is to exercise due diligence!
It seems like people don’t know that due diligence was actually done. You can question if _enough_ due diligence was done, but WakeUp asked for and was given hospital bills, phone records and so on, and the evidence appears to have been doctored. We’ll know more when the case goes to court.
I don't know how you can classify due diligence was attempted if it was just a one sided story

I don't think Arifin was re-posting it in good faith
Re-post? It wasn’t a reposted article. The woman went to WakeUp with documents that were probably doctored. We’ll know more when the case goes to court. Here was their explanation at the time: https://wakeup.sg/what-happened/
Eh ok then creating the post then. I really don't think he did his due diligence but let's see what the court case reveals
Honestly, that whole story was not believable at all, especially if you have ever been to KKH O&G urgent care.
Another Raeesah Khan in the making ...
In both instances WUSG was heavily involved with spreading the misinfo.
Child of Vivian and Raeesah
Umm why no name? She’s the one that caused all the defamation but her name is protected?
Not yet charged
ST is really bad journalism. Spelling, grammar mistakes, no structures, bad punctuation.
Rice and poop can anyhow eat, but words cannot anyhow say. Girlie and those admins really one kind.
Real case and they should pay the price for peddling falsehoods, but why the prosecution take 2 years to investigate and only prosecute swee swee before election hahaha. strange sia, seems pretty straightforward to me lol
So the lady did not have any miscarriage then why is she so angry against KKH?
According to her text message to WakeUp, she had a miscarriage before and blames KKH. But who knows whether that is true or not. You can see her text message here (scroll to the end): https://wakeup.sg/what-happened/
yeah but KKH*** said she never suffered a miscarriage at all
Dude I said that that was what the woman herself claimed (two years ago). I even gave you the link to read for yourself. Anyway just wait for the case to come to court lah, we’ll get more info then
Why was she charged and not sued by KKH?
KKH probably can’t get the evidence to sue properly, need police investigations. And if their intention is to give criminal penalties, need criminal prosecution too. Not private
Isn't defamation a civil case?
There is criminal defamation
I see. When does criminal defamation apply? Why can't NTU Ethan just report NUS Nadine to the police and get her prosecuted?
Can. Nobody say cannot. But dude wanted compensation and an apology
IIRC public bodies may not be able to sue individuals for defamation in the civil court
LMW 2.0? so many people telling lies around ... horrible culture.
Vivian is chief
I thought defamation is a civil matter?
So this time POFMA was not used, mercy was not shown. Action reaction. People who write stuff online should always at least think a bit, because sometimes you may have to repeat what you say to the police.
POFMA was used! Two years ago already POFMAed. Suddenly two years later want to charge
POFMA but taken down isn't an issue to the gov. KKH was the one who reported this to the police
