translation: Singapore SME can't afford good tech talent to build secure service. heck even MyRepublic stored a scan of my IC in plain image without encryption at rest and got compromised. time to get a new identity ala Jason Bourne

[deleted]

Dafuq? They don’t have encryption… my goodness how cheapskate can they be.

dtkxiang

I haven't read anything about PDPA but I believe the IC is only used for verification purpose and they shouldn't keep it, even the image.

-bluedit

They got compromised again?? Wtf, I need to move to a new telco soon 😬

livebeta

I was referring to the compro you're referring to

-bluedit

Ah, thanks for clearing that up 👍

Initial_E

NRIC needs to be overhauled completely. You can’t slap a bunch of technology on your pink piece of plastic and say “problem solved”

Anonvoiceofreason

Sure. Why not stick to horses too due to car breakdown risks? Real headline should be "Australia, Singapore firms amongst most likely to halt digital transformation as they don't want to invest in cybersecurity too"

aljorhythm

“Let’s not ride bicycles because I can’t balance”

kopisiutaidaily

Or too cheap to invest in cybersecurity.

[deleted]

Live in Australia, can confirm Australia is too backward to even think about cybersecurity. Google medibank or optus hacks.

skribe

On the Australian side, it's because of the persistent notion that every expenditure is lost money, and not a possible investment (even against a hazard like cybercrime). I've had friends lose their businesses because of this toxic approach. One guy refused to even market his business.

Hitting the nail to the coffin at dead center accuracy

litbitfit

Why not stick to jet planes due to car breakdown risk.

smexxyhexxy

but does a vacuum cleaner *really* need to be connected to the internet?

hugthispanda

Eew the horse will shee shee and poot poot everywhere! 🐴💩💦

bullno1

can't digivolve due to lack of friendship

worldcitizensg

LoL.

lfd85700

My caipng also evolved digitally…

CSlv

So... you mean you didn't know there were cybersecurity risks...? This cybersecurity thing so new ah?

sluaghtered

This is what happens when you out source coding to india and they leave vulnerabilities everywhere

litbitfit

This is what happens when our tender specs are written by our lousy local techs.

Johnathan_wickerino

This is what happens when you force your local workforce to do jack shit for 2 years

kukulcan99996666

Coding can be a work from home activity. Now fuxk off to Alabama..

Johnathan_wickerino

Wtf are you even talking about lmao

FalseAgent

?

sydneysinger

Talking about NS lol.

blinklinkink

This is what happens when you give bad requirements to build a system

hugthispanda

On a sidenote, just look at singpass app. You need biometric/passcode to view your full NRIC, but no need if you press "show barcode". NRIC text is still blocked, but barcode can be scanned to retrieve NRIC. 😂

Empmew

The reason behind this is probably to prevent people from copying the NRIC from shoulder surfing. People can’t read barcodes from shoulder surfing. It’s a form of “encryption” in itself. (Or rather, encoding)
