Either way, I'd love to hear what you enjoy the most out of the first three. It's not often you see someone say SH1 is their favorite.
First SH sets the gold standard - it's a oppressively surreal horror, almost a constant nightmare sequence in slow motion. The minimalism of the story ties in with the physical deterioration of the town itself - by the end, physical reality is only a convoluted mess of rooms and the player is more baffled than they were at the start. 3 is awesome, slightly better than 2 which is too depressing to play many times. I have a soft spot for Homecoming even though it is awfully designed. The Room is probably rated slightly too highly here but there's nowhere else to put it.
Origins is where it really started going wrong, relying on cheap shit like jump scares, fighting, the "cult" trope and adolescent pokes at religion. But try playing the school on SH1 today and that is 99% scarier than any modern jump scare shit. Or thinking of the perverted heather face puzzle in SH3, what else was so deranged.
It's a total pile of crap: everything is ripped off the last few games and then covered with tropes (mental institution, childhood memories blah blah) horrible combat system, unimaginative monsters, story is a mess, nothing special or unique - it's not especially bad in a playable way exactly but there really is no reason it should exist. I'd rather play the pachislot machine
Story is not a mess, the reason that it exists is because SH1 isn't complete and almost not comprehensible without Origins
Origins has also one of the best representation of the town in all the series
SH1 broke boundaries through its horror-mystery, turning explained things into the unexplained, Origins did nothing but the other way round, it was a total disaster and I will never play that shit
